File Error: wrong type   can't open media file

After capturing my film using Final Cut Pro,"Capture Now" I can't open the film file. It seems the film was caputured onto my Mac notebook in a file format Final Cut Pro doesn't recognize or can't open. When I try to open the file the following error message pops up: "File Error: Wrong Type".
It seems the format of this media file is AV or avi (the name of the media file is "Untitled - AV". It's not a .fcp file.
I tried to open it with Quicktime or other programs, but without success, no program can open it.
I appreciate your help!

I followed the instructions in the article AppleCare Technical Support emailed: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302337 . It helped to delete the User Preferences and to remove receipts and to reinstall the entire Final Cut Pro Studio software. I think what really helped was to update the latest software versions (Final Cut Pro 5.1.4).
Thank you very much!

  • FCP Files Will Not Open (File Error: Wrong Type)

I have put together a few pieces using FCP and then unfortunately my LaCie HD got wiped. I was however able to recover all of my files (thank God) but when I go to open any previous FCP files, I get the error message "File Error: Wrong Type" once FCP is opened. I am wondering if there is any way to open these files somehow so I don't lose my work. Thank you.

If they'll open in QuickTime, you could re export them, and thus rebuild them that way.
Otherwise... recapture them. I'm not sure they couldn't be fixed, but more than likely the recovery process messed up the resource forks of these files. Might search in the QuickTime forum here for a fix for that??

  • FCP File Error: Wrong Type

A EXT HD w/ 1TB worth of FCP Projects and it's media died on me. (no, none of it was backed up, please save me the lecture!)
Anyway, we sent it to one of the Drive Recovery places and they were able to retrieve about 95% of the files.
When I got back the new drive w/ the rescued files It seemed like it was all there until I tried to open one of the .fcp files and encountered this:
    FCP File Error: Wrong Type
I checked the file's info to see if it was associated w/ FCP. It was...
I checked the Capture Scratch files and found that all of the Quicktimes did not have their ".mov" extensions. I added ".mov" after one of them and it opened successfully in the Quicktime Player. I tried moving this same file to FCP and encountered this:
    File Error: Unknown File
As an experiment I took the same quicktime (which BTW is an HDV 1080i60 Quicktime) and dropped it into Compressor. I converted it to the same setting (HDV 1080i60) After the conversion I was able to pop it into FCP normally.
So what do you guys think? Is there anyway I can get these .fcp files to open? Am I totally screwed?
    Thanks,
    -B

Yes, a .fcp extension means it's a FCP project file. I'm not dragging/importing .fcp's into FCP, just trying to open them normally w/ no luck. It's the QT's I've been dragging/importing into FCP.
I've tried a few Resource Editors to change the way the .fcp project files are handled/read w/ no luck
Well, at least my QT's are intact...

  • Message: File Error, wrong type

I have some folders listed on my scratch disc when I look in Finder. They say things like Waveform Cache file, autosave vault, audio render files. Inside there are files relating to a project I have completed. If I try to open them I get the message "File Error, wrong type".
It seems to me that it's OK to trash these as I cannot do anything with them. Before doing that I wanted to just check with the experts: is it OK to remove them please? Thanks for the advice.
    Keith

If you're done with the project, it's ok to trash everything. If you plan to return to the project, you can delete everything except the actual project file and any media files associated with it.

  • Receiving an export file error: wrong type

I have created a movie several times in FCP and then exported the movie to QT without any problems. Now all of a sudden, I can't get the movie to export correctly. After the 2 hour export, I'll check on FCP to find that the program has shut down without an "Unexpected Shut Down" message. I check for the exported movie which I find in the saved folder. I click to open and verify the completed job, but find that I get an error instead : "Error: Wrong Type".
The last successful movie I created was September 14th, prior to the QT 7.5.5 upgrade. I thought it was the upgrade, as I found out that FCP does not do well with the new QT version, so I reverted to QT 7.5, but I am still experiencing the same problem with FCP quitting and the movie not being able to read.
What is going on? Can anyone help?

    Francois:
This is a crazy solution, but this happened to me last week and this solution enabled me to open my files again -- they were all greyed out and I thought I'd lost them. I took my drive in to an Apple Store Genius Bar without resolution and spend 2 hours online with ProApps (FCE/FCP) tech support, also with no resolution.
This fix is based on the fact that FCP when it is started, it automatically opens the project that was open when it was closed. First, in FCP save the current project (this can be any project -- I created a placeholder project -- to a dummy name -- I used "save me". Close FCP and delete the dummy name ("save me") project. Now rename the project that is greyed out and provides the File Error: Wrong Type message that you would like to open to the dummy name, so that it's now called "save me". Now open FCP again. Now save the recuperated file using the original name.

  • File Error: Wrong type

    Hi,
I have been archiving some old finished videos (as self-contained QTs) on a server that is PC based. I have a feeling that this may be a problem. I'm right, right?
On a related note, I now have some QTs that will not open, with error messages like
    'File Error: Wrong type.' (FCP)
    and
    'Error opening movie
The movie could not be opened.' (QT)
The fun part is that I cannot remember exactly which had been moved over there (I had a couple LaCies die on me and in a rush transfered a bunch of stuff back and forth trying to stay ahead of the crash), but now they're back on Mac based externals. But won't open.
    Any advice is tremendously appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ariel.

Okay, thanks for the help. I'm pretty swamped right now, but by next Monday I will have gone through all of them. I will post back then with any info that may be of interest.
So, for the future, I should either stay away from non Mac OS formatted drives for my media, or zip them before sending them over. (by control clicking and archiving)
(sigh) Thanks, guys. I'm still just trying to figure out the cheapest, quickest way to archive my old stuff. I guess tape is the best way to go.

  • #3125 error. I can not open the file

We work on a Mac and a Win machine. We share the files via a NAS. We now encounter the problem that the muse-site saved by the Win machine can no longer be openend by the Mac. (#3125 error. I can not open the file). The only option to continue is to work via the Win machine.... ;-((( Please give us a solution. Ed

A 3125 error indicates the operating system returned an error when Muse attempted to open the file.
It's highly unlikely there's anything wrong with the file. If you haven't already confirmed, if you copy the file to the Mac's local drive it will open fine.
I'm suspicious of file/folder permissions. Is it possible the account used to mount and write to the NAS from Windows has different user permissions than the account that's attempting to read it on the Mac? I could theorize a 3125 error might occur if one user with the necessary permissions wrote a file to the NAS and then a second user with insufficient permissions attempted to open it.
Also, two users cannot simultaneously open the same .muse file on the NAS. Is that what's being attempted in this case? Muse goes to great lengths to attempt to prevent this and should put up an error about the file already being open in another copy of Muse. However, how that's detected is dependent on OS APIs that have subtly different behaviors on different servers and server protocols.

  • Error message: "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg files"

    I'm using DW 8, and I have installed the 8.0.2 update. I'm
having trouble inserting certain JPG images into a site. I get an
error message pop-up that states "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg
files". It will allow me to insert some jpg files, but not all of
them. I've tried drag & drop and going through the Insert menu.
The files are not large at all. Doesn't appear to be any problem
with png's or gif's. It's incredibly frustrating. Anyone have any
    suggestions? TIA.

    > why was i taught that all my web images need
    > to be in 72dpi if it doesn't really matter?
most people suggest 72 because it was an old standard with
    the early
macintosh DTP programs. For web use it's easier to
    standardize on it because
when you make an image, you have to put ~some~ number in the
    resolution box
and it might as well be 72 as any other number. It simplifies
    moving image
files around in different applications if they are all the
    same resolution.
For display in a browser, these will all have the same file
    size and display
    size in a web page:
    600x600 pixels at 1dpi
    600x600 pixels at 72dpi
    600x600 pixels at 6000dpi
It's when they are used in other applications or when a
    direct url like
/photos/1.jpg is printed out that they may display in the
    resolution, not
    the pixel dimension.
I came across a page once where the designer always saved his
    images with a
resolution of 6000 dpi or some other odd number because he
    thought that if
people dragged the image off the page to save it- most of
    them wouldn't be
able to resize it. or some other idiot reason maybe.

  • Unable to Open File / File Error-Wrong Type / This is not a Movie File

I used TechTools to volume optimize my Lacie external hard drive. After the hard drive had been successfully completed - I am no longer able to open any of the files on the external hard drive. I get these error codes when I try to open FCP files, Quicktime FIles and word documents. Some how Tech Tools   optimization has caused these files to be unreadable. Does anybody know how to fix this? There is NO backup for the Lacie hard drive.

You may be out of luck.  My understanding is that there is no need to optimize mac drives in osx.

  • Error Code 10660 -- can't open a file

I can't open a WORD file unless I have already opened WORD. In the past, the computer would open the application for me and open the file. When I try, it pops a dialogue box saying: The Operation could not be completed, and in smaller type: an unexpected error occurred (error code 10660).
What went wrong, and how can I fix it?

    Hi there,
I believe the problem has nothing to do with your Mac but with your copy of Microsoft office, the code appears to be well known by them.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.

  • Error message - how can I open this file?

I'm getting this messsage when I try to open an Illustrator file: "Acrobat PDF file format is having difficulties. Non-hex character in a string."
Any ideas on how to get this file to open? I'm trying to open it in CS4 after working on it in CS3, but I haven't tried to open it again since saving in CS3 so it may have this error on both versions.

That would be my inclination. File may have been sent as ascii when it should have been sent as binary or vice versa.
In 99% of transfers it's ALWAYS safest to zip an AI or eps file before sending it anywhere.

  • Can't open recovered files, which are now Unix Executable Files

My external hard drive, where I kept my Final Cut Pro documents, recently died. I hired someone to recover the data. Now, when I try to open them in FCP 6, however, I get the message "File Error: Wrong Type". It says they are "Unix Executable Files". Looking back in this forum, none of the previous solutions have worked for me--like adding .mov to the file extensions, for example.

ah, the subtle difference between a movie or media file and a project file.
Thanks for posting your solution, hardly anyone ever does that around here. And congrats on the rescue! We rarely hear of a successful data recovery on media files but this was a data drive, yes? You could help future users who suffer catastrophic drive failures by posting your contractor and the cost if you want to share that information.

  • I can't open PDF File Attachments

    Hello,
I use the environments Windows 7, MS Office 2010 and Adobe Reader 11.0.09.
In the perferences on the categories Trust Manager I had actived the function: PDF File Attachments: Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external application
Now I'm trying in a PDF document to open a Word or Excel file and get the error message: Acrobat can not open the file attachment Because your PDF file attachment setting do not allow this file type to be opened.
And I can just open Word and Excel files.
If I open the PDF file with Adobe Acrobat 11.0.09 then I can do that.
    Someone has a idea.

    Hi Aadesh,
I had actived the Trust Manager -> 'Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external application'  on Acrobat and Reader 11.0.09.
I can open the non-PDF files with Acrobat but not with Reader.
