I also had a case where zoneadm attach -u changed the hostname of a zone from FQDN, i.e. "zonename.mydomain.com", to just "zonename".
Never bothered to figure out why, but it caused an application to fail..

Update: after writing this post i changed the zone for a sysidcfg file, and it had a sysidcfg file which set the hostname to just 'zonename', so this was also caused by a /etc/sysidcfg file.

  • I had CS6 and now I have installed CC. I cannot open files, place files, etc directly from the File Open... or File Place...   Is there something I'm missing in CC that I don't know about?

I can open files directly from my Finder window (Mac OS, running latest installment). And I can copy/paste or drag/drop graphics into an open AI file for editing. But I can't use the AI>File>Open... or AI>File>Place... (or any shortcuts). Absolutely nothing happens. It's like I never clicked anything.
Am I missing something???  I've never had this problem in CS6. Is there something different in CC that I need to add or erase?
    HELP!

I didn't realise that the Camera Raw won't work in 64bit mode. Converting to 32bit enabled the files to be opened.
Actually, that's wrong. Camera Raw 6.3 WILL run as a 64-bit plug-in when hosted by Photoshop CS5 if CS5 is running as a 64-bit app. It'll run as a 32-bit plug-in when hosted by Bridge or Photoshop CS5 set to run as 32-bit.
So, there's something else going on here....
How are you trying to open the raw files? From within Bridge or the Finder? How did you update Camera Raw to version 6.3? From the updater? Is ACR 6.3 in the correct install location? main Library (not the User but root), Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS5/File Formats/Camera Raw.plugin
Can you open raw images from within Bridge? Have you tried to view raw files with Bridge before you updated Camera Raw? Have you trashed the cache foe the folder? In Bridge under Tools/Cache/Purge Cache

  • Music files etc stored on the ipod but not in itunes - how do I move them?

When I open itunes and connect my ipod mini the ipod appears in the source list uner device, on the left hand side of the screen, but the only way I can access my music, podcasts and playlists is by 'right clicking' on the ipod under 'device' in the source screen - I can then access my music, etc but they do not appear under 'playlists' in the source screen (it appears that the music etc is not stored or kept in itunes). How can I move these files from my ipod into itunes?

If you have music on the iPod that isn't on your computer, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only

    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Is there a similar file to windows\ssytem32\drivers\etc\hosts in OS X

    Hi,
I am running a Windows 2003 Server with several websites. I would like to view my websites from my new Imac, however I keep getting prompted for the user name and password for the router.
In windows on my old computer I could edit the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts with the IP address and URL of the site and it would open. Is there a similar file in the Mac OS X 10.5.7 software.
    Many Thanks in anticipation

    {quote:title=Herr Lazaro wrote: > So if /etc/hosts works reliably I'll probably switch to it}{quote}
Adding host records by editing the /etc/hosts file is not entirely reliably. Since Leopard, some people have reported issues of the added host records "mysteriously" disappearing, or Apache not being able to properly resolve the added hosts. The bigger issue is that the modifications in the /etc/hosts file can create unwanted side effects in the normal functioning of services like the mail server and others.
Since Leopard, there has been an alternate way to add host records using the dscl utility. In fact, by many, it is considered the better, more reliable, and safer method.
You can read this recent article to see how its done:
    http://tomafro.net/2009/07/dscl-the-easy-way-to-add-hosts-on-osx
There are a number of additional articles on the web about using dscl for adding host records to OS X.
The choice, of course, is yours. If you are using the /etc/hosts file without issue, then it might be safe to continue doing so. But, if your system starts experiencing domain name resolution issues or problems with services such as the mail server, you should consider switching to and using the dslocal database to manage your host records.

  • Hosts-update: automatically append the mvp blocklist to /etc/hosts

This util written by wintervenom has actually been in the AUR for going on 2 years now.
    What it does:
Updates /etc/hosts with the mvps blocklist to prevent thousands of parasites, hijackers and unwanted adware/spyware/privacy websites from working.
    Operation is trivial:
    1) Edit /etc/hosts.local to match the hostname of your system and adjust the domainname as needed. Also add any hosts that you wish to keep i.e. other PCs on your network.
    2) Run /usr/bin/update_hosts as root which will append /etc/hosts.local to the mvps blocklist and apply some post processing writing the final file to /etc/hosts automatically.
    3) (Optional) Add a cronjob under root crontab at some interval to keep your /etc/hosts fresh.

Sure you can, but not in this particular tool.  There is a script written by haarp designed to run on a tomato-usb powered router that does just this.  I host the code here: https://github.com/graysky2/adblock
EDIT: I can't remember if it pulls from the same urls as pgl does but you can certainly modify the code to do it.

  • How could a java process bypass etc\hosts file while doing dns lookup ?

    Hi,
I am developing a java web proxy and developer tool [http://www.tcpcatcher.org|http://www.tcpcatcher.org] .
Right now it is working as a none transparent web proxy.
In some situation and for some hosts, I would like to turn it into a transparent web proxy.
Suppose, user's browser and java proxy are running on same host (typically on localhost). An entry is added in etc\hosts file, for example:
    127.0.0.1 google.com
So without any change in browser config , if user visits google.com with its browser , http request is received at proxy level.
Now my proxy has to get the actual ip address of google.com bypassing the etc\hosts file (right now the proxy is doing a loop on itself).
Any idea how this could be achieved ?
Am I searching in wrong direction ?
    thanks !

This is a shot in the dark, but I'll try anyway.
Take a look at dnsjava (open source, I never played with it).
My understanding is that using this to resolve names instead of normal Java API's would allow you to bypass etc/hosts in the java code
    (see [http://old.nabble.com/DNS-Resolve-from-hosts-file-first-then-DNS-Server-td15431381.html]).

  • Lil' script to update adblockfilter, adblocking via /etc/hosts file

hi, i've recently changed to adblocking via the hosts file (which works great btw), but i was missing  filtersetupdating like in firefox, so i've created with my limited scripting skills this one...

  • Leopard: /etc/hosts is ALWAYS ignored

Hi all. I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere on the net. Can anyone tell me why, in Leopard, my /etc/hosts file would be completely ignored. It doesn't matter what I put in it, it seems to never be read. I've tried using dnscacheutil to empty the cache and all that. Nothing seems to help. And I can't find anywhere how I can tell Leopard the order in which to try hostname lookups (hosts first, then DNS). Any ideas?
    Thanks
    --Dan

can you post your /etc/hosts file, or a subset (maybe replace IP addresses with nn.nn.nn.nn).
    If you use
    file /etc/hosts
    do you see
    /etc/hosts: ASCII English text
    or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CR line terminators
    or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators
Have you tried to install and/or run your own DNS server on your Mac?

  • /etc/hosts

I guess this belongs here, if not, mods, I apologize :)
I set up a Centos server and was browsing logfiles and noticed that instead of the usual 'localhost' string that I see in my Arch logs it had my hostname in all of the log files. After a little digging I found this on the Debian forum. I've edited my /etc/hosts how the post describes and lo and behold, after restarting syslog-ng, I get my pretty hostname in my logs. My question is, this runs contrary to how the Beginners Guide directs to set up that file and contrary to how the Arch installer sets up /etc/hosts. Did I just mess something up or is this an oversight? I didn't want to go editing wiki pages not knowing for sure. It seems like everything is running just fine on my machine now.
For reference, here is how my /etc/hosts was:
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost archdesk
This is how it is now
    127.0.0.1 archdesk localhost
    Thanks.

The hosts file has three parts on each line. First is the ip, second the canonical (full) hostname and the third part is an optional list of aliases. In your old situation this means that the first alias (which was used for the logfile) was localhost.
    With either:
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain archdesk localhost
    or:
    127.0.0.1 archdesk.localdomain archdesk localhost
I would expect you get the desired behaviour (not 100% sure though).
    Read
    man hosts
    to learn more.

  • /etc/hosts is ignored

I configured my computer to use tor and dnsmasq to resolve dns queries exactly how the arch wiki said to. This seems to work fine, however, when I try to add a entry into /etc/hosts it is ignored. To fix this I tried commenting out no-resolv but it did no good. Why is it ignoring my /etc/hosts file?
    Here is my /etc/hosts file:
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    ::1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    0.0.0.0 facebook.com
    # End of file
    Facebook.com still works...

WonderWoofy wrote:If you are using dnsmasq, why not just put it in your dnsmasq.conf?  The formatting will obviously be different, but if that is what is resolving the dns, it would make more sense to put it there.
Actually, the main reason I was trying to modify /etc/hosts is because I am wanting to build a decentralized peer-to-peer service. I need to redirect the user to localhost upon entering a url with ".mydomain" The only way I can think to do this is to add an entry into /etc/hosts.
I just happen to be using tor/dnsmasq so my thought is that modifying /etc/hosts won't always work for people with abnormal dns configurations. I would like to understand why it is not working more than just finding a work around.

  • How to save etc/hosts

    Hi all,
Please help sorting my terminal, I'm having problem with my iTune everytime I want to update or restore my ipad or iphone, it keep saying "this device isn't eligible for the requested build"
Now I tried to edit the etc/hosts using the Terminal, but suddenly all the script
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1          localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0          localhost
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
are all gone i think i accidentally deleted it. so what I did was I copy this from forum and paste it to terminal.
But i'm having problem how to save it, when I press ^O it goes like this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1          localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0          localhost
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    File Name to Write: etc/hosts
^G Get Help         ^T To Files         M-M Mac Format      M-P Prepend
^C Cancel           M-D DOS Format      M-A Append          M-B Backup File
and I dont know how to save it. when I press ^X doesn't save at all.
    Please Help me.
    Thank you in advance.

Well lets make things easier, get out of Terminal by just Quiting it or Force Quit.
    Download the free TextWrangler here
    http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/download.html
Now under the File Menu >Open File by Name
    /etc/hosts
It should look like this, if not then just copy and paste it in.
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1       localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0     localhost
Now save it and give it your admin password and that's it. Easy as pie.
Terminal's pico and vi editing programs have a lot to be desired, but serve the basic puposes.
With Terminal you need to enter
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
then enter your admin password to access a system file.
It can only be done via a Admin account, however with TextWrangler not only is it much easier, you can also access system files from a Standard user account.
    the two lines
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
You have there are "commented out" with the "#" symbol, basically your telling the computer to "ignore this line"
Why you think messing with your /etc/hosts file is going to solve your primary issue with iTunes/iPad/iPhone is beyond me.
Did you ever think that perhaps your two devices are too old for the "requested build"?

  • /etc/hosts and /etc/inet/hosts

we're running Sol10x86 11-06 and notice that there's no link between /etc/hosts and /etc/inet/hosts as there has been on some previous versions. /etc/hosts is the only file that contains all of the info for our IPMP configuration, and that seems to be enough during reboot.
what looks at /etc/inet/hosts? any danger in making /etc/inet/hosts a link to /etc/hosts?

I don't have a copy of 11/06, but I've never seen a default installation of Solaris without that link.
It's certainly there in 08/07. Is there any chance that whatever process is populating /etc/hosts on your machines is breaking that link?
