File exported as ePub from inDesign not opening in Stanza, known bug?

Hello,
I've just started to learn how to export documents to EPUB format using inDesign CS5 7.0.3 on Mac OSX. I've found that the exported books can be opened in Adobe Digital Editions, but not on Stanza.
The error I am getting in Stanza is:
Could not load book
Could not find required entry in archive: OEBPS/\Q7%20laws.xthml\E Available entries are: [META-INF/container.xml ...
After a lot of trial and error I came to find out that apparently, the error was generated by the original .indd file name: When the inDesign original filename is "7 laws.indd" Stanza will not open the file.
However, if I remove the spaces from the filename (changing to "7laws.indd") it opens with no problem.
If this case turns to be true for all user of the latest version of inDesign, I believe that the EPUB exporter should:
a) Convert the spaces in the filename to dashes (or something akin)
b) At least warn that the file name with spaces can cause trouble on some readers.
I wonder if the inDesign dev team, is aware of this and/or if this issue also affects Windows users.
If so, could it be fixed on an upcoming patch?

  • Incorrect images from .indb file export to ePub in Indesign CS6

I am having problems exporting images to ePub and get a different result from the same file depending on whether I export directly from the .indd file or from the .indb file.
When I export to ePub from the individual chapter (.indd) file, everything is fine and the images appear in the correct locations where they have been anchored.
When I export via the book  (.indb) file, images are being replaced with the incorrect file in the resulting ePub.
Looking at the HTML, it seems not all images are being exported from the .indb file and when the image is missing, Indesign is substituting the next available image from the alphabetical list in the images folder so I'm getting incorrect images peppered throughout the book.
Any idea where I've gone wrong and how to fix it? I've produced several ePubs with images and never come across this before.
More details on how I've set up the files and any other info I think might be relevant below if needed.
    - I'm using Indesign CS6 (8.0.1)
    - I'm producing an 11 chapter book.
    - Each chapter is a separate .indd file for ease of editing.
    - These 11 files have been added to an .indb file for export to ePub.
    - Images are all anchored to their captions within the text.
    - On Export to ePub settings for images I have selected to insert a page break before the image and that settings apply to anchopred objects.
Nothing else is selected (I don't want to preserve appearance from layout.)
    - I'm using the Articles panel feature for order of content.
    - In the original file supplied, the images were placed as .tiff images. I saved them to jpeg and relinked them using the "relink to folder" and "match same file but this extension" options.
    - No links are flagged as missing.
    Any help much appreciated.

The solution points to how, it appears, the book panel export is functioning: each file exports a set of tags referenced to itself; file01 adds a "1" to its tags, and so forth. What I was able to do was use a file referencing all of the tags in the style suite in two ways:
    first, I exported to an epub the single file, creating a fairly clean CSS, which I then extracted and renamed;
    then, making certain that file was the "source" file in the book panel, I mapped for export all of the tags, being careful to be certain each tag/class combo was same as in renamed clean CSS;
    I synchronized the whole shebang;
I exported to epub, adding my clean CSS as an external style sheet, selecting only "include embeddable fonts".
    Bingo!

  • Export to ePub from InDesign

I read at http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/epub/howto/ that it is possible to export to ePub format from InDesign CS4. Is it also possible to export to ePub format from InDesign 2.0? I have a pdf and a Word document that I want to export to ePub format. But I can't get either one of them to open in InDesign. Would this problem be solved if I upgraded to InDesign CS4? Is there another way to make my PDF or Word document into an ePub by using InDesign 2.0 without upgrading?
    Thank you.

Liz Castro’s Kindle book is not available in my region; it’s blocked by Amazon.
As for InDesign 2.0, it generally works for what I need, and when it doesn’t do something that I need, I am told that InDesign CS5 doesn’t do it either. So for the time being, I see no compelling reason to spend the $700 on the upgrade.
By the way, I am also told by a colleague who knows InDesign well that while a Word document cannot be opened in InDesign 2.0, it can be “imported” by following the following steps:
    -          Create a new InDesign (.indd) file that corresponds to the number of pages, page size, and page margins of the Word document.
    -          Place the Word document on the page. This creates a textbox with the contents of the document in it.
    -          You may want to adjust the size of the text box to suit the margins.
    -          Go to the bottom right corner of the highlighted textbox and click on the plus signal.
    -          Place your mouse on the next page of the InDesign (.indd) file and click. This creates another textbox with the continuation of the text from the previous page.
    -          Do this consecutively on the rest of the pages and all of the text from the Word document will be imported.
    -          Sometimes, the formatting in the .indd file does not exactly match that of the .doc file, particularly for page breaks, tables of contents, indexes, and other front and back matter.
She says that some publishers use this technique, but it is more common to “link” an InDesign file to a text document that contains the text that is to be published. In this way, new editions of a book can easily be generated by simply updating the InDesign file to the source file when the text in the source file has changed.
On another note, if anyone can suggest a good program that can easily convert Word documents or PDFs to ePub files, I’d greatly appreciate the recommendation. I have read about Stanza Desktop and Calibre, both of which can supposedly convert both Word and pdf files to ePub format. There are others well, such as Web-Books.com, which can also supposedly convert .doc files into ePubs. The web site http://selfpublishingadventure.com/converting-word-files-to-epub-files/ recommends eCub and ePubGen, the ePub converter from Google, but the former doesn’t handle Word documents and the author of that web page said that ePubGen inserted arbitrary page breaks.
I’d like a program that can convert Word or pdf files while preserving as much as the formatting (particularly headings, styles, fonts, page breaks, page numbering, and embedded images) as possible without requiring a lot of manual revision. Suggestions/recommendations are welcome.

  • Last page rasterizing when exporting to EPUB from Indesign

    Hello all,
I  currently have a problem with the last page of my EPUB book rasterizing. This shows up in both Adobe digital Additions and iBooks. I cannot fathom why it is doing it, is there anyone who has come across this before?
fyi. It doesnt seem to matter what content is on the last page, the whole page turns into a flattened image (even text). I originally created the EPUB on Snow leapoard on OSX and recently upgraded to mountain Lion and I'm on Indesign CS6.
Any light on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Leonie

I've never heard of InDesign rasterizing the last page during EPUB export. I'd try the usual troubleshooting techniques.
Start by restoring your InDesign preferences. Here's how:
    http://pfl.com/trb
If that doesn't work, try saving your InDesign file as IDML and reopening it. Here's how:

  • I exported my .epub from Indesign CS6 but it crashes my ibooks every time.

    Hi,
I have a book that I'm publishing that I'm trying to test on my iphone 5/ipad. I have done this last year with another book without any problems. This new book has a short film embedded, so is that making a difference for the problem I'm having? I have placed different files formats into indesign and it takes it fine. But the epub version kinda freaks out when it's read. Suggestions? The best video format for Indesign? Cheers.

    Moved to InDesign forum.
If you're going to read an epub on iBooks I would suggest MP4 with h.264 encoding.

  • I am new to EPUB fomat and I am facing a lot of difficulties in exporting my work from InDesign CS6

Hi..I am new to EPUB fomat and I am facing a lot of difficulties in exporting my work from InDesign CS6. The problem is that I have got a financial report of about 100pages to export as EPUB, with lots of graphs etc..and when I export it, to EPUB 2.0, the following happens:
    1. The image quality is quite low (even if the original images are of high quality, and during export, i put the image to max quality)
    2. The graphs do not appear where they should be! All the imags in fact appear after the long paragraphs of text..meaning everything appear quite messy and in an unordered manner.
I have read that images should be anchored, and doing so, the result is quite better, but still, some images appear at the end of the text!!d
That is, the end result, in terms of pagination and graphics, is no way like it should have been, compared to the indesign file (page 5 is displayed after page 10, image on page 4 appears on page 9 etc..)
    PLEASE HELP..
    P.S :
I am using Adobe digital edition to view my EPUB..I have also tried CALIBRE and SIGIL!! But I am not too sharp in eiting CSS codes etc...

    Hi Akshay,
If you want your images to appear standalone with no other page item on the page, then you can insert Page break on an image.
This is how you can specify a page break:
    1. Select the image
    2. Goto Object->Object Export Options
    3. Select EPUB and HTML tab
    4. Select Custom Layout check box and then check Insert Page break. You can select from the option in the dropdown-Before Image, After Image, Before and After Image as per your requirement.
    Regarding your question about images:
You export your graphs as JPEG but are those JPEGs of good resolution? If they are, then InDesign is doing something wrong during export but if the JPEGs are not of good quality then it is not an export issue. Please provide some more details here.

    Pooja

Export the pdf from indesign some error Pop Up window (Failed to Export the PDF file). How slove the problem
Please some one help on this

You need to try exporting the first half of the book.
If that exports ok then export the other half of the book.
Whatever half it fails on - keep dividing the book in half to find the culprit page or pages.
For example if your book is 128 pages long:
    1. Export pages 1 - 63
    2. If these Fail to Export then
    3. try exporting1-32
    4. If these Fail to Export
    5. then try exporting1-16
If it doesn't fail (step 2)
    Then export pages 64-128
    and 64-90 etc.
until you find the pages causing the issues.

  • Exporting a pdf from InDesign-need to access Overprint

I am exporting an InDesign CS5.5 Document with mixed ink and Illustrator eps with pantone overprints.
When I export it into PDF the native mixed ink in InDesign represent accurately.
However the Illustrator eps preview as solid gray @ 70%. This is the overprint layer onto of Pantone 293.
When I turn on Print preview in pdf it is accurate.
    My question is:
In the export to pdf palette under the output header, there is a check box 'simulate overprint'.
I've tried several different variations, but cannot get that check box to turn on.
Unlease I make an X-1a file the overprint for the Illustrator eps does not preview without turning on the output preview palette in Acrobat.
And lets face it, to the client, that is rocket science.
How can I access the 'Simulate Overrpint' option when I am exporting the document.
    Thanks,
    J-

Or, better than that, export the PDF from InDesign as PDF/X-4!
By default, Acrobat and Reader use overprint preview when displaying PDF/X-4 files. Plus you have the benefit of full color management and not having transparency ruined by premature flattening.
One other note. Other than for the fairly common practice of overprinting black text over colors to avoid halo effects due to registration, one should be exceptionally careful in using overprint. Trapping, the other good, justifiable use for overprint is really best performed by the RIP. Most modern RIPs provide for automatic trapping. Overprint should absolutely not be used as a “poor man's transparency,” especially in conjuction with spot colors. With the advent of real transparency in the Adobe imaging model and hence in Illustrator, InDesign, and PDF, there is no good reason to use overprint hacks anymore to simulate transparency.

  • Text cutting off when converting to EPUB from InDesign

    Hi there,
The text of one paragraph style is being cut in half when the file is exported to EPUB from CS6.  The problem is coming through in more than one e-reader.  We tried solving the problem by editing the CSS, but this removed the font in one e-reader and made no change in another.
Is there a way this problem can be fixed in InDesign, maybe some change to the paragraph style?
    Thanks!

Figured out the problem - there was just an issue witht he line spacing of that paragraph style.

Anyone know how to export a PDF from InDesign so it is "click to go to next page" instead of "scroll to go to next page"?

I don't use the latest InDesign, but in the past ID's options for exporting to PDF did not allow setting how a PDF should be viewed once exported.  However, these settings can be adjusted in Acrobat through Preferences: check out Page Layout and Zoom under Page Display.

I am exporting an ePub from a 57.6 MB pages file on my retina MacBook pro and the exported epub is 982.9 MB in size. Exporting the exact same file from Pages on my MacBook Air give me a 97.8 MB ePub file.

Sorry guys... Wish I'd seen this earlier. I could've told you that highlighting and note taking capabilities are disabled intentionally in fixed layout EPUBs and Kindle KF8 books.
The only time you will see an FXL book that does support highlighting is if is in either B&N or Amazon's "Page Perfect" or "Page Replica" format - which is basically just a packaged PDF of sorts that can be read through Kindle and Nook apps (Other college book apps like kno.com and the old CourseSmart support Page Replica, too. CourseSmart was recently merged in with VitalSource, however, so I don't know what they are doing these days WRT page replicas). iBooks does not support any sort of print page replica. It's EPUB 3 FXL or iBooks Author only for Apple.
