File Extension Unkown to Safari?

Hello,
Not sure where this is issue fits, I received a picture file from a friend called img_4635.jpg, and the file icon is a white sheet with the "@" sign in the middle with http underneath. I assumed it was a jpg file but couldn't open it. It goes to Safari and displays a long url that I didn't understand. I was unable to open it on my Windows laptop as well, however, I found the full filename was img_4635.jpg(4.7mb).webloc(753B). I've never seen a file extension like this, and I'm wondering if there's something on the Mac that will allow me to open the file.
tks,

Hi
highlight the file with your mouse, by clicking on it once - press the enter key & you should see that you can edit the name.
alternatively, click a second time, but just on the name - again you should now be able to edit it.
Another way, is to highlight the file, then use File Menu - Get Info ( or press Command(that's the Apple key) I - an info window should open, where you can also edit a file or folder name... in the 'name & extension' section.

    Hello JF.
I don't think that extension is supported. I believe Firefox can only read .json and .html.

  • Why do the file extensions (.jpg .gif .png) no longer appear when I click on a previously saved image to use that image's file name (particularly important when saving a series of images using the same root name)?

I save a lot of images using firefox, often times from a large batch or series of images. It used to be that I would click on a previously saved image and the entire file name including the file extension (i.e. image_example.jpg) would appear in the "save as" line. Now when I click on a previously saved file, the file name appears without the file extension (i.e. image_example). Which means I have to manually type .jpg every time. For a large collection of images that I am hoping to use the same root file name and then add chronological numbers at the end, this has become incredibly frustrating, especially as it is a previously unnecessary task.
I am using a new Macbook Pro and maybe there's something Apple related to this...? It did not happen on my old PowerBook G4. I have file extensions turned on in System Preferences.
It should be noted that I have searched high and low and have even gone into the Apple Genius Bar where they were just confused as I was and of course ended by urging me to use Safari (shocker!) as it has all kinds of new extensions and bells and whistles. I seriously feel alone on an island with this dumb, hard to google problem. Thanks so much for any help anyone out there might have.
I mean: is this as simple as changing a setting in about:config?
    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your response Mylenium, however like I mentioned multiple times, I did change all of my trackpad/scrolling settings in system preferences.  And if I wanted to use a normal mouse (or a tablet), I would've gotten an iMac instead of a MacBook Pro.  I travel often and work all over the place, not always with access to a decently sized workspace that would be required for using a mouse or tablet.

  • Mp4 file not working in Safari, OK in Firefox

    Hi
I have just updated my site to include a short movie file. This works fine in Firefox, but Safari recognizes it as text. After publishing my website prior to uploading, all seemed to work fine. However, once uploaded it turns to text.
    Do you have any suggestions?

The movie is at the bottom of the page.
Don't know how this looks on a PC.
    Thanks

Because Firefox opens a dialog window asking you what to do with this file extension and allows you to choose to open it with QuickTime browser plug-in.
Call your host server and ask them to explain the issue. It has to do with .htaccess files on their server.

  • How do I reverse a file extension association?

A while back I changed the file association of all my .eps files because they were opening up in preview instead of Illustrator not thinking about all my Photoshop .eps files.
Now, all my PS eps files open in AI. Is there a way to reverse this besides changing each one individually? Maybe a preference I can trash?

    Eric
You're dead right, it will open all eps in Photoshop, and so move the problem around. Have a look at

  • Automatically open file based on MIME type and file extension

We have an app that is registered to handle custom MIME type and file extension. This works perfectly on IE and FireFox causing them to download the file to a temp folder and then launch our app associated with MIME type and file extension with command line to the downloaded file. On Safari however this does not work. It opens up a download window and shows that it has downloaded the file with no option to open it.

  • Finder - File extensions - strange behavior

    Hi,
I have a MacBook and an Intel iMac, both running 10.5.2. I noticed that for some file types, Finder hides the file extension on the iMac, but not on the MacBook. Some examples are VMware Fusion virtual machines (vmwarevm) and Safari web links (webloc). BOTH machines have "Show all file extensions" unchecked in Finder advanced preferences.
The only thing I can think of that could be related is that Leopard has been upgraded from Tiger on the MacBook, while the iMac got a fresh install.

There is a provision to show or hide extensions on a file-by-file basis in Finder's "Get Info" window for each file. Look just below the name in the "Name & Extension" section of the Get Info window & you should see the checkbox next to "Hide Extension." (It will be grayed out if the file has no extension, otherwise it should be active.)
The global "Show all file extensions" preference overrides the individual file's setting & forces all extensions to be shown when it is checked, but it does not override files' settings when it is not checked. (Unchecked is not the equivalent of 'Show none' but of 'do nothing.')
Thus, to hide all extensions, you must use the "Get Info" window to explicitly set the "Hide Extension" option.

  • Quicktime automatically adding file extension?!

I use Quicktime for all my video playback - so i'm assuming my problem lies with this?
I do VJing and when I'm downloading video clips (non-mpg4) i.e. avi, flv etc - the downloaded files are adding a '.mpg' extension onto the file - so that it wont playback automatically in quicktime. For example a file downloaded called '1234.avi' ends up in my download/desktop folder as '1234.avi.mpg'?
The problem means I have to manually alter each file name deleting the .mpg file extension (and confirming each time that I want to change it) - so it will load in quicktime. I'm assuming it may be because I have ticked the box on 'always open this file type with quicktime' - which is what I want, but how do I stop it adding the file extension each time?

Thanks for your help. I wasn't aware you could disable that alert in the finder? I'll have to look at doing that.
Whilst I take your comments on board - are you suggesting that Safari (web browser being used) - is adding the file extension on download?

  • Change extensions on a Safari plugin?

    Safari 5.1.2 on Lion 10.7.2.
Help / Installed Plug-ins shows the list of plugins and the file extensions associated with them. However, unlike other browsers that I'm familiar with, Safari doesn't seem to provide a way to change anything on the list, e.g. change the extensions for a plug-in.
I have the Amazon downloader listed as a plug-in, but there's no extension (amz) associated with it. When I get an Amazon download, it downloads the .amz file instead of opening it in the downloader. Is there a way to associate the amz file extension with the downloader?
    Thanks!

No, it's not working as intended.
When you reach the point in the process that it's time to download the music, there's a "Download music" button. The text on the window says, "If your browser asks, tell it to OPEN the file, not download it." The "file" is a .amz file that's referenced by the button.
On Firefox (Mac), Firefox (Windows), and Explorer (Windows), clicking on that button opens the Amazon Downloader program with a list of the music you just bought, which begins to download.
On Safari (Mac), clicking on that button downloads the .amz file to your computer. It doesn't open the Amazon Downloader program. It doesn't do anything else. In order to get to the same state that you got to in the other browsers by clicking on the button, you then have to double-click on the .amz file that was downloaded to your Downloads folder.
I want Safari to act like the other browsers. I don't want it to download the .amz file. I want it to open the .amz file in the Amazon Downloader program automatically, which is what happens in every other browser but Safari (that I've tried; I don't have Chrome).

three finger or two finger gesture to move back and forward between pages of file only work on safari, unlike with old os. this new lion won't let me do it. Any help?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Trying to download some adobe files, but find that safari doesn't do it. Any ideas??

Trying to download some adobe files, but find that safari doesn't do it. Any ideas??

If you are trying to download flash player then you can't - it's not supported and probably never will be (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ and Adobe have failed to create a version that works on iOS), and you can't download extensions/plug-ins via Safari anyway (you can only install what is available in the App Store).
The Skyfire, iSwifter, and Puffin browsers work on some flash-based sites (but not judging by their reviews), or you could look to see if the sites have their own apps in the store.

  • Xht file extension still requires manual configuration

to open the files with an xht extension with the File Panel, i needed to configure the following file:
    /Users/me/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver\ CS5/en_US/Configuration/Extensions.txt
adding XHT after XHTML on the line for HTML documents enables Dr CS5 to open a file with an xht extension via the Files Panel.
maybe a future update will already include the xht extension as an HTML type of document.

    Hi Ron,
as far as i know with regard to xht as a web standard, the xht file extension is used the same as the xhtml file extension (which is also my understanding for the use of htm and html).
w3c has a specific validator for XHTML 1.1 documents. there is a link from pages on my web site at http://www.enhanceability.com/0.xht (near bottom of the page).
i don't know how widespread support is for xht as XHTML (HTML) among the various browsers and apps and networks, however I can browse such pages with near lightning speed with Safari, Firefox, and some other browsers.
i just noticed that although Safari 5.0 renders an XHTML page with an xht file extension, when I try to save the page as page source it enforces the xhtml file extension, without allowing the xht file extension. (however i can rename with xht in the finder)
as far as Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, it seems that i needed to configure two files so that the FilesPanel could open a doc with an xht file extension, and also so that the code view of a document with an xht file extension also showed code highlighting.
    Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS5/Configuration/DocumentTypes/MMDocumentTypes.xml
    and
    MyUser/Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS5/en_US/Configuration/Extensions.txt
it was simple to add XHT after XHTML in the HTML documents lists, yet there must be a better way.
Yes, I am familiar with XHTML. I followed the link that you provided to here:
    http://www.enhanceability.com/dev/0.xht
Which has a link to this page:
    http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/2008/ED-xhtmlmime-20080618/
I think you have misinterpretted that information. I do not see anywhere on the W3C page that recommends using .xhtml or .xht file extensions.
I also found this FAQ that explains my understanding about XHTML documents:
    http://www.webheadstart.org/xhtml/faq/index.html
Yes, it would be nice to have a UI to make adding file extensions to DW easier.

  • Extensions disappear from Safari

My extensions disappear from Safari. Initially I got a message which I think said something about migrating my preferences and I had the reenable my extensions overtime I opened Safari. I think it started happening when I upgraded to Safari 7.1 but not sure, it's just a recent thing though. I couldn't uninstall my extensions so I removed them from my plist file. I then removed my plist file but restarting Safari doesn't rebuild a new one. Now when I install extensions they appear but when I quit Safari they are gone. I've now upgraded to Yosemite/Safari 8.0 but still the same issue. Attached is what my plist file looks like. Any help appreciated.

    Hi ...
Might be a corrupted preference file.
    Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/Extensions.plist
Clicl Go then move the Extensions.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Preview file extension

the preview application apparently does not accepts pdf files if they do not have the ´pdf´ file extension in the file name, is this correct?

No, you'd have to have the .pdf extension - after you've downloaded Adobe Reader, just select a pdf file and Get Info on it (Command-I) from the Finder. Select the "Open with" and change it to Acrobat Reader for all .pdf file types.
Now as to what you're actually trying to do - with some sort of extension used (Adobe Reader provides it's own, which Safari uses) in a browser, you can 'point' to a pdf file (for example, I use Microsoft's SkyDrive) and the file will open in a browser window. From the browser window (again, depending on the extension used) you can elect to save the pdf file, print it, etc.
Since Adobe Reader is pretty much universal, it works well with opening pdf files in Safari. It doesn't work with Firefox (a third-party extension is required) and Chrome has it's own pdf rendering engine. I think I get what you're trying to do - if I'm off coarse, correct me.

  • .aspx file extension (Active Server Page Extended File)

Running an Intel iMac with OS X 10.6.4 and Firefox 3.6.12.
I recently have received links to web pages that have files with the .aspx file extension. When trying to open the files they are downloaded to my hard drive, but will not open.
Web information on this file extension indicates that any web browser including Firefox will open the file.
As stated above Firefox will not open files with the .aspx extension. Can anyone explain why?
Incidentally Safari opens the files with the .aspx extension. I don't routinely use Safari. Firefox is my default browser and would prefer to use it if possible.

An asp page is an asp page is an asp page, whether or not you
    use
includes in it. Unless you do some fancy server
    configuration, in order
for the server to recognize it as an asp page and parse it as
    such, its
extension should be .asp (or .aspx).
If you mean the include file, it doesn't matter what its
    extension is. I
just tested on an IIS5 server, and ASP code was parsed in an
    include with
an extension of .monkeybutt. There are two advantages of
    naming them
    with a .asp extension:
    - DW recognizes them as asp files
    - Their contents won't display if somebody finds them by
    accident
