File Extensions in iPhoto

I've read all of the discussions that are available on this subject.  Here is my question.
Is there a preference or another way, which will include the file extension in the image file name when it is imported into iPhoto?  The extension is on the file when I import it.
I want to keep it visible.
Can this be done?
Mary Lou

Couple of things:
In the Info Window (click on the 'i' button) you can see the Kind
Or you can use Smart Albums based on Kind too

  • Display File Extension in iPhoto?

I've just started to use iphoto.  In the thumbnail view of an event (or for that matter, anytime I'm viewing a display of thumbnails), I would like iphoto to display file name and file extension.  It's not doing that and I can't see a setting in iphoto preferences to enable file extensions.  I know there's a Finder preference to show all extensions, and it is checked.
Is there a way to display file extensions?

    Yes.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • IPhoto 11 and Picture file extensions

Since upgrading to iPhoto 9.2.1, I've noticed that after importing, iPhoto no longer displays the picture's file extension below the pic, or in the information window.  All my files have a .CR2 extension when they are imported.  All pictures that were in the iPhoto llibrary, prior to upgrade to 9.2.1, display their file extensions below the pic, and in the information window.
I've not been able to locate a preference that allows me to display the file extension in iPhoto...  Is it no longer possible to see the file extension in this version of iPhoto?
    Thanks,
    Bob

I have connection issues with my AppleTV and it seams to disconnect routinely.  I haven't used it much and am trying to resolve that issue as well.  Separate from that, how do you interface directly with AppleTV.
And by the way Bob, I'm at the point where I am rebuilding my files via another post...  Currently on step 1, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to export the entire library to a folder and then group it by file type to narrow down and change the format via preview and replace the files deleting the originals.
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    If #1 fails continue with:
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Show file type in iPhoto

I'm sure I used to be able to see the file extension in iPhoto 9.4.3 e.g. .jpg or .tif  etc. Is there a way to turn this off or on in Photos view?

You should see it in the panel on top of the info panel:
Doesn't the file extension show there?

  • Thanks for the help...iPhoto 11 on my Pro isn't recognizing the .nef file extension.  Advice?

I'm importing photos from a Nikon d5200 in RAW format and iPhoto says it doesn't recognize that file extension (.nef).  The movie files came off just fine.  And when the initial window comes up in iPhoto asking if I want to import all photos or just the selected ones, I can see all the RAW file images as usual.  They just won't import.

What version of iPhoto? Has this Nikon RAW ever worked with your Mac and this version of iPhoto?
You need iPhoto '11 version 9.4 or higher for RAW support for the D5200 - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4757

  • IPhoto changing file extension...

I use a very old version of Photoshop (Adobe PS CS Version 8) for digital scrapbooking.  I store all of my files on an EHD because I have thousands, and I don't want to slow down my computer's performance.  It had been hooked up to my desktop, but I recently started attaching it to my MacBook because that has become my main computer.  When I hooked it up, I had to update my iPhoto libraries to work with my MacBook's version of iPhoto ('11).  So I did.  Now when I try to open my files, I get the error message that an invalid JPEG marker type is found.  Most of the files, aren't even jpegs, they are pngs or psds.
It appears that when I try to open a file, iPhoto is duplicating it and giving it a jpeg extension, which is unreadable by Photoshop.  Is there any way to stop this from happening?  If not, can I undo what I've done and reattach it to my old computer?  I'm talking THOUSANDS of files!
Thanks for any/all of your help!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Displaying file extension and "raw" tag in iPhoto 08

In iPhoto 06, filenames were displayed with their extensions and a "raw" tag was added.
In 08, the "title" field doesn't contain the file extension. Is this a result of the way I imported photos into 08? I used "import" to bring them in from folders on a network drive.
    Glenn

I right clicked the RAW file, then chose "edit in separate window". I did crop, contrast, sharpen, etc. Then the "Done" button.
For example, I imported both RAW and JPEG from my CF card to iPhoto. They are IMG_3067.CR2 and IMG_3067.JPG, respectively. I then duplicated the first file and renamed the new one as IMG_7777.CR2. I did the edit like mentioned above on IMG_7777.CR2. Finally I clicked "Done". You can see that IMG_7777.CR2 differs from IMG_3067.CR2 but it still has the CR2 file extension.
Is this normal or I missed something here?

  • IPhoto file extension

    Hi All,
I have been looking through my Events on iPhoto. I think I originally installed v8. Anyway, my filenames are showing the extension ie dsc_0123.jpg as the filename. However, my more recent events are not showing the file extension. Its annoying as I have .jpg and .nef files. Did Apple change this at some point and if so, is there any way I can display them in my recent events? I have tried a batch change where I have tried to set the title to the filename but it doesn't work.
    Thanks in advance.

Click on the wee 'i' lower left and use the Info Pane t tell you what each file is.
Also, the NEFs are automatically tagged with a keyword: RAW.

  • IPhone photo/video library glitch - wrong file extensions, name shift, lost files etc [LONG story - sorry]

I have a 5s running 7.0.4. and my computer is running Windows 8.1.
We had a baby and my phone filled up fast with pictures and videos, so I decided to offload them onto my PC. I connected my phone to the usb port, and directly copied from the DCIM folder to my hard drive.
Something happened during the first attempt, and the process was interrupted. So I went into each of the sub folders, and selected all files, and started the copy process again. I told the computer to skip any existing files.
So all the file counts matched in each folder, and I figured it was safe to start deleting from my iPhone.
On my hard drive, I separated all the MOV files into my Videos folder. But in Windows Explorer, the thumbnail view showed several MOV files with no thumbnail - just the generic icon.
As I sorted my photos into various folders, I also noticed a lot of generic icons instead of thumbnails for the JPGs. I started to feel concerned that my files had become corrupt during the transfer. But then I noticed a PNG file that was a few hundred megabytes. This was odd, so I added the MOV extension to it. Sure enough, it was a video with the wrong extension.
I renamed every PNG and JPG file that had no thumbnail to add the MOV extension. Every one was a video with the wrong file extension.
Then I went to the video folder, and all the MOV files that had the generic icon were actually JPG files.
Well I was just happy to see that the files were not corrupt.
One more time before I deleted things from my iPhone, I did a spot check to see that the largest videos were on my hard drive. I found a few videos that were not copied over, despite the file counts having been accurate. So I copied the videos again, and compared file sizes and date/times when there was an overwrite prompt. Most were matches, but several were the same file name with different sizes and dates.
I didn't know what was going on, but I just wanted to get the files on my computer. So I renamed my local copy where there was a name collision, and copied the videos. I deleted the videos from my phone as I went along.
I felt pretty confident that I had all the files copied now, so I began mass deleting my photos.
I went to the Photos app on the phone, and watched the thousands of pictures disappear, and the glorious free space grow on my phone.
But wait... there was still 1 video in the Photos app. I thought I had gotten all the MOV files off the phone...
I have a photo info app installed, so I was able to see the file name of the video. I searched for that file name in the DCIM subfolders, but the folder that had that series of files (the IMG_3000-3999 files) listed the files with that particular video skipped. It was clearly still on my phone, because I could play it.
Then I noticed it was a 45 minute long video of my baby. About 5 GB. So I figured it must be due to the file size that it wasn't visible from explorer. (Can't explain why that would be, but M$ keeps changing crap too. I never freaking know what to expect from them either.)
After having deleted all the jpg, png and mov files from the DCIM folder, there were still about 26 files in my camera roll on the iPhone. And I could still view the video.
I decided I wasn't concerned about the photos, I just wanted to figure out how to get the video onto my computer.
So I selected all the photos in the photo app (skipping the 1 remaining video) and tapped the trash can.
Poof! One item remained, and it was one of the garbage photos. My video is GONE! ^#@*&#($^@Q&%( And no, I didn't fat-finger it. I was very careful to select the correct thumbnails.
Looking back, I know that I should have just started the entire file copy process from scratch when funny stuff started happening like mismatched file names. But I am a sleep-deprived new mom and just wasn't thinking clearly. It would be nice if I could have used my file/directory compare program to check the iPhone against my laptop, but it is not compatible with devices, only removable drives.
And no, I don't use iTunes. I stopped using iTunes years ago when it would randomly decide to delete contacts from my phone just because they didn't exist on my computer or some sh-- like that. I have always just manually synced all my stuff and have never had an issue like this. To say I am sad to lose that video is an understatement.
I googled "iPhone undelete" and "iPhone data recovery" and downloaded a trial for one of the likely candidates. It turned up a bunch of garbage, but not my video.
Anyways... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of scenario? Has anybody identified what could cause this to happen? I would like to avoid this in the future. (I will avoid this type of loss, because I know now what I could have done differently to be more careful. But it would be nice if I didn't have to get all neurotic about checking 60GB of photos/videos side by side each time I copy them to my computer...)
I have seen other threads on the forum here regarding corrupted libraries and such, but I am not sure this is the same thing.
One suspicion I have is that it might have to do with the iPhoto app being installed on the phone. I can't articulate why I think that is worth considering. But when I looked at my Video folder, I ended up with many duplicate videos, and all the duplicated videos' file names were 2 numbers apart. As if all the file names got shifted at some point. Very strange.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If anybody has an idea, I am interested. If anybody else has lost precious memories due to this, we should talk. If it is a widespread problem, maybe we can all get together and pound down Apple's door?
As an aside: Why am I unable to select Apple Support Community to post this question to?

In my case number of weird things happen whenever I try to copy pictures/videos from my iPhone from direct USB...
    1. JPG files are wrongly named as MOV and vice versa.
    2. I copy only folders but in addition files with no extension are copied in the main folder, very strange.
    3. Whenever I open one of the folders, strange icons like this () start appearing which cannot be copied even.
Unfortunately I used to delete a lot of files with wrong extensions in the past because I never new they could be fixed.
    Apple should answer this!
Note: I am using Windows 8.1 and use a direct USB cable without iTunes to copy the media files directly from My Computer.

  • Using network file share with iPhoto 08

Hello all: I am a new "switcher". My home network consists of a windows machine and my new imac, with a linux file server which I use to store all data files including my family's extensive photo library.
Back in windows land I was able to just point Picassa to the photo directory on my server and in this way all computers could share the same photo files.
I need to figure out how to do this with iPhoto 08. When I tried doing this yesterday, iPhoto wanted to copy over to my imac all our photos from the server. This is not exceptable.
I am able to do a similar thing with iTunes, where all our music lives on our linux server, but each computer can see and use the files from the server.
Thanks very much for the hand-holding, Chris.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.

  • Mts format file to an iPhoto friendly format

I recently  made a movie project and my movies are .mts format. I need to put them in iPhoto in order to edit them but .mts is not a recognizable format on my mac (Mac OS). Could somone plese help me convert these files to an iphoto frindly format.

I have the same issue and have been researching the answer. Here's what I've discovered. imovie doesn't recognized .mts files. I've read that final cut pro does. It's expensive though. I've also read that if you import directly from the camera you can import into imovie. I guess there are other files when you record that are imported with the .mts files and enables imovie to do it's thing. I used a pc to save my videos onto an external hard drive and only have the .mts files. You can use a 3rd party app to convert the file. Look at Old Toads post above.
This is a link with some info on .mts files. Put .mts in the search field.

  • IPod Touch 5Gen movie file extension is MOV.mov - why?

I noticed when I recorded a movie today, the file extension was .MOV.mov  . I've never seen this before. I can watch it fine.
When I record using my iPad 2, the movies just have .MOV as the file extension.
Is this a glitch and if so, how to fix it? ( I'm wondering if people who I send the recording to will be able to view it.)
    Thanks.

No, I didn't. I sent the movies to my computer via text (imessage).
I just decided to sync/upload them via iPhoto and the file extension is now .MOV
Have you any idea what changes it when it's sent via imessage on device to imessage on computer?

  • Mistakenly change file extension while in disk use mode

I made the mistake of changing the file extension of a file on my Nano (5G) while it was in "disk use" mode. When I unplugged the device and later plugged it in, the modified file was gone. Does the Nano treat unrecognized files as non-existant? I tried using Windows Explorer to find the file, but nothing was there. Also, the overall memory used on the Nano has decreased by what I would guess is the same amount as the missing file. I'd like to get my file back. Any suggestions?

Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

I recently updated my iphoto to iLife09 (iPhoto 8) and in doing so all of the file extensions in bridge changed from .jpg/.jpg2000 to .approject... i like the viewability of iphoto better than bridge but bridge allows better movement of files... i have been told that i must delect one or the other as they are no longer compatible.... if i select iphoto as the organizer can i delete bridge... i currently use iphoto (bridge not accessible) and PSE for editing... as have another editor that came with the canon dslr that is not useable.... any suggestions welcomed

  • Where are my file extensions?

    Hi All,
I have two iPhoto libraries (one in the default package and one in a new package), and one of them shows my file extensions and the other does not.
In my default library, all of my pictures are in the library because iPhoto sucked them off my memory cards. In this package, the title field (which is the field shown below the pictures, if you want) has the filename *with extension*.
In my second library, all of the pictures were imported from an existing file structure on my hard drive. In this other package, all of the titles are missing the file extension!
I cannot find any setting that changes the behavior of what goes into the title field, but I would very much like to see file extensions in all of my libraries. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
Merry Christmas (If that's your persuasions)
