File extention and default application

When i open a .doc file it's open the wrong application. How can i set the default application i want to open.
thanks

Click the file, click File>Get Info, then under "Open With", select the app you want .doc files to open with, and click "Change All".
Good luck!

  • Files not supported and default applications?

    i have an imac G5 that is running Mac osx 10.4.11 my cousin gave it to me and it has a lot of files that seemingly don't work like the icon has a big red circle with a line through it and when i click it i get a popup saying ''you cannot open this application because it is not supported on this system im thinking of going down to the apple store and buying like whatever the newest os thingy is but will that work cuz i dont wanna spend money on something that wont help Plus i have some programs that when i open it its like ''there is no default application to open starcraft.exe any help? thanks

    An .exe application is for Windows so you can't use it on a Mac. Have you got the install discs? If so, try running Disk Utility from it and also, repair permissions in Disk Utility on the computer before you use the install disc. The best thing would be for you to perform an Archive and Install to clean things up.
    Let us know how you make out,

  • How to open a file in the default application for it directly from QuickLook?

    Is there a way to issue an Open command straight from QuickLook?
    Problem:
    I have a directory containing symlinks to the PDF files I usually refer to. I cannot copy the files locally and I must use symlinks.
    When I need to open one of the files, I can't rely on Finder icon previews as these do not show for symlinks (I think that's absurd, don't you? Is there any reason why they would not?)
    Not knowing how to pick the file I am interested in, I select them all and OPTION+SPACE QuickLook them. Immediately following OPTION+SPACE I press COMMAND+ENTER and finally see them all tiled across the screen (notice: COMMAND+ENTER is not bound in Finder as far as I can see, why not allow users to press that directly?)
    Here's the problem:
    Once I choose the file I want, with the mouse of the arrow keys, I don't see how I could open just that file in the owning application (say: Adobe Reader).
    That, to me, is dumbfounding. COMMAND+O opens ALL files I selected to begin with but I think QuickLook should allow for opening the file currently being previewed with an UI element or a keystroke, shouldn't it?
    It is so strange that it almost can't be, maybe I am just missing the obvious... in that case I apologise.  Feel free to report this to Apple if you think they can work on this.
    For the record, it's the 29th of Aug 2012 and I am on 10.6.8.

    Small update.
    I created a database with a western european characterset We8MSWIn1252
    If I use utl_file to write out the code on the database server it gets produced correctly in Ascii format with the accented charcacters.
    As soon as I try and write out the code using owa_util.Mime_header and htp.p the code is written in UTF8 format.
    I did try and write out the header specifying a western european characterset but it seems that if it encounters an accented character it automatically switches to utf-8 mode. If there are no accented charcters the file is produced in ascii format.
    Really stumped on this one.

  • .edt file extention and Reader 9

    I purchased a e book from direct2drive and the download file has a .edt file extention. This is supposed to open in Adobe Reader. It will not. Adobe Reader doesn't recognize the file. Is this a valid file extention to be used in Adobe Reader 9???
    Thank You

    I believe that you need to download Adobe Digital Editions at http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ to access .edt files...

  • CERTIFICATE AND DEFAULT APPLICATION LOSTED!

    I formatted my phone memory, and the default application such as EMAIL inside message menu and CALCULATOR inside organizer menu got removed. Apart from that, all my Java trusted certificate such as VERISIGN, THAWTE....... that are stored inside the authority certificate of the phone security settings got removed also. The painful part of it is that, I need this certificate for application signing. Pls, how can I recover the certificate and the default application?

    Check this thread, I have the same problem and I hope the hints here help: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5981050#5981050

  • File adapter and clustered application

    Hi !
    I have a question about how to use correctly file adpter at sca application in clustered server. My application very simple. Folder with xml files. Composite application - file adapter read folder with mask *.xml. Some times file adapter read one file twice. How I can set lock file when read one server from folder ?
    Edited by: user5427713 on Nov 26, 2012 5:38 AM

    You need to setup the File Adapter for high availability to ensure proper functioning in a clustered environment. Check out the details here in section 5.9.2.2
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12839_01/core.1111/e10106/ha_soa.htm#CHDJFDAI
    In summary you will need following:
    1. A shared filesystem for the managed servers
    2. Same value for control directory in connection factories
    3. Use eis/HAFileAdapter instead of eis/FileAdapter as connection factory in JCA file.

  • Gnome: mime types, file associations and defaults.list

    I installed the new Gnome 2.8 during the weekend and now my file type associations is completely bloated. The mime system is intact - Nautilus recognises files properly. However, Nautilus doesn't know which applications to open a specific file with. I have read other posts and found useful information, but not the solution.
    This post in FedoraForum gave me a hint to what's causing the problem:
    http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread … post127530
    It seems that the file defaults.list is missing from /usr/share/mime/applications. Apparently this file contains the associations  between applications and mime types. I have not be able to find out which package should provide this file or how to recreate it. Can anyone help - maybe provide the name of the package that provides this file?
    Thanks,

    Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
    That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
    and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
    Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
    I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.

  • Windows 8.1 - Sysprep, CopyProfile and Default Applications

    Hello,
    I'm absolutely at the end of my rope with this one.
    My organization wants to deploy Windows 8.1 Professional to a small but not insignificant number of workstations. Due to a host of reasons beyond my control, higher ups have decided UAC needs to be off. I've got 8.1 Pro x64 installed on a Hyper-V VM, and
    I'm in audit mode working on creating an image.
    I remove all of the metro apps (do not work with UAC off), but the Photos app remains. Fine. So while in Audit Mode, I set the default image viewer to Windows Picture Viewer. I then customize the start screen, finish configurations and sysprep the computer
    with the sysprep file below.
    Once the process completes, the sysprep is successful and the machine reboots.
    Much to my dismay, it seems as though the CopyProfile doesn't work. The start screen reverts back to default with just 3 items (Metro IE, Explorer and Desktop) and that freaking stupid annoying unruly Photos app is the default picture viewer again.
    Please help! I've spent 3 weeks on technet and Google and just can't find anything.
    Thank you!

    After changing my search approach, I found a bit of a work around. Even though the CopyProfile doesn't seem to be working, I was able to eliminate the biggest problems by deleting the below registry keys, which removes Photos as the default App for pictures.
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.imagetype /f
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.panotype /f
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.videotype /f
    That did it. Sure enough, all major picture filetypes now default to Picture Viewer.
    As for the metro IE icon that's created in the start screen for all new users, I created this batch file:
    :: Create Reg Entries
    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f
    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v "WIN-81FIX" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat" /f
    start /wait reg load HKU\temphive "C:\Users\default\ntuser.dat"
    reg add HKU\temphive\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f
    reg add HKU\temphive\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v "WIN-81FIX" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat" /f
    start /wait reg unload hku\temphive
    :: Create Batch File
    Echo IF EXIST "%userprofile%\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk" ( > "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo del /q /f "%userprofile%\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk" ) >> "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo reg delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v WIN-81FIX /f >> "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo shutdown -r -t 0 -f >> "C:\Windows\deploy\TDS-81FIX.bat"
    This creates a batch file for each user that deletes the metro IE shortcut in that users profile, then restarts the computer.
    Bit of a flimsy work around, but does the trick.

  • How do I set a unix executable file as a default application for a file type?

    I have a bunch of files all with the same extension, abc. I compiled a program, xyz, from source (using MacPorts) to run through these files. Everything works great. The program is in /usr/local/bin/
    From a terminal window:
    /usr/local/bin/xyz ./somefile.abc
    How do I get xyz to launch .abc files from Finder by double clicking on them? If I "Get Info" for any .abc file, and go to the "Open with:" section, my program xyz is not there. If I click on "Other...", xyz is nowhere to be found and /usr/local/bin is not navigable.
    How do I get xyz in the Applications list?

    Platypus was exactly what I was looking for. To those who are interested:
    The script type I used was Perl.
    Create a new script:
    #!/usr/bin/perl
    system("/usr/local/bin/xyz '@ARGV[0]'");
    Make sure to Accept dropped items.
    I also changed the Output to "None", unchecked "Remain running after initial execution", and checked "Run in background".
    Thanks so much!

  • ACC, File Realm and Default Login Module

    Dear Community,
    In my first attempt at using ACC with File Realm, I discovered the following problem.
    The container posts the login prompt as expected, and when entering a valid user name and password, this works as expected. However, if I should click the Cancel button or press the OK button with invalid user name or password, an exception is thrown.
    I am uncertain if this is a bug in the container or a bug in the documentation. I have been studying Chapter Eight of the Developer's Guide. It says "Authentication techniques are provided by the client container, and are not under the control of the application client component. The container integrates with the platforms authentication system. When you execute a client application, it displays a login window and collects authentication data from the user. It also supports SSL (Secure Socket Layer)/IIOP if configured and when necessary. "
    Based only on what I find in the Guide, this must be a bug in the container.
    If anyone can shed some light on this symptom, please respond.
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Thanks, Tim.
    I am using SJSAS Platform Edition 8.1 2005Q1.
    I am looking in chapter eight of the Developer's Guide for specifics about four cases regarding the authentication thru the ACC where the ACC prompts the user for user name and password.
    1. Successful login (this is working OK).
    2. Incorrect user name or password.
    3. The Cancel button.
    4. Dismissing the prompt via the close window button.
    There seems to be no information provided on these cases, so I expect the container to handle this on behalf of my component.
    Here are the stack traces that I get for cases two thru four.
    When I try an incorrect user name and password:

  • File Dialog and Default

    Folks, I am trying to implement a behavior such everytime I open up my LabVIEW application, a windows box showing my saved/old files should automatically pop, before I use the "Esc" key to close the Windows Box.
    I would appreciate any useful logic or suggestion on how I can implement the behavior.
    Thanks in advance.

    You need to store the last saved file name in another file (I call it persistance file)... or you want to read a specific location for last saved file(s). And then you attached code (saved in verison 8.0) for displaying the message with custom behaviour.
    I am not allergic to Kudos, in fact I love Kudos.
     Make your LabVIEW experience more CONVENIENT.

    Hi,
    after downloaded the file to the client, you can use the client_host command to start the application and open the file.

  • Opening a file in its native application from Flex.

    Is it possible to open a file on whatever native application the user runs it as?  Or even, at that, to simply open the directory it's in, in an explorer window?
    We have a search application and the frontend is in Flex, and I'm trying to find a way to do this, such that when a use double clicks on a result (in a datagrid - but that's trivial), it opens the file or at least the location of the file on the OS.
    Any system call where I can say system("explorer.exe " + filepath); or something?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Dear BillBlalock ,
    thank you for answer!! You are very kind and helpful!! I would like to inform everybody that I have finally find another way of soilving my problem and I announce it to the forum in case somebody else encounters the same problem. Well, I soved the nproblem by using the following code:
        excelButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
           public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
             String filePath = "\""+saveFileName.toString()+"\"";
             System.out.println(""+filePath);
             try
               String cmd="explorer "+filePath;
               Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
             }catch(IOException ec){}
         });I hope it can be useful to somebody!! By this code, I can make a button (in my case the excelButton) to open any file in its default application. Keep up the great work you are doing guys!!

  • [Solved] Greek accented characters and Qt Applications

    Hello.
    This is my first day with Arch linux.
    My problem has to do with greek accented characters like ά, ή, ό etc.
    I can type these characters on my browsers, rox file manager and other applications but not on Qt based applications like Skype and TeXmaker.
    At first when I tried to type ά on skype I got nothing.
    Later I installed ibus-qt and now I get á instead of ά, é instead of έ, etc.
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    PS: I include the results of locale -a and locale commands in case it helps:

    I just created a /etc/rc.conf file and added:
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    TIMEZONE="Europe/Athens"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT="ter-v16b" #it's Terminus font for console, just install terminus-font from community
    CONSOLEMAP=
    LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8"
    DAEMON_LOCALE="no"
    USECOLOR="yes"
    This fixed my problem.

  • Default Application for .cbr and .rar Files

    Okay, I know to change the default application used for opening a file you click on "Get Info", and then "Change All". A couple of weeks ago, the default for .rar files was UnRarX, and the default for .cbr was Jomic. I used Onyx to do some clean-up (repair permissions, etc), and the default program changed. Now whenever I change the default program for either .rar or .cbr, the other changes as well. I know that a cbr is technically a rar file, just for comic books, which is why I need it to open in a different program, I can't figure out how I got it to work before, can anyone help?
