File folders changing to inaccessible UNIX documents

I'm on a MacBook running 10.6.8. I often run files back and forth to my workplace on a Lexar 16 GB stick...now just a few months old (since my last one seemed ot be overheating -- a Kingston prone to this, as it happens).
The other day I noticed a folder (full of files) on my stick seemed to have changed (on a PC) to an 8kb "file" of no type. I was not able to open it.
I figured I would fix it at home, but at home it appears as a UNIX file...and today I am seeing more and more folders changing in this way! I have notivced four more just in the past few minutes, some at the root level, other buried.
I ran Disk First Aid and the PC's own scanner equivalent on the stick, but no serious problems were found; DFA did make a few fixes. But the problem continues.
Should I buy a file retrieval program? Is this stick HOSED? That would be a big shame.
Is this a known issue in Snow Leopard? I have had documents change to UNIX before, but I was able to change them back by adding the proper suffix. But with folders I am stumped -- and this is much more severe as many files are now inaccessible.

I fear this is not a known issue with SL but a cross-platform issue with Windows. If you perform a Google search for "folders turning to unix executables" you'll find you're sadly not alone. Most users report this problem in connection with Windows; see, e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5413592?start=0.
As far as I could find, there's no solution for folders (and neither a satisfactory explanation). I only found this:
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/289108-folders-turned-int o-unix-executable-files-2.html#post1471648
I don't think a data recovery software will help. Afaik, only FileSalvage offers support for FAT32 volumes (Data Rescue's user guide states "limited support"). But you can download a trial version of both applications, do a scan and check whether one finds files to be recovered on the USB stick and/or your inner disk. I'd try with FileSalvage first.
Another suggestion you'll find around is repairing your inner disk (you can't repair a FAT32 volume on a Mac, afaik). This won't do any harm (and probably no good either), but I'd prefer the single user mode. Follow the detailed instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417:
To use fsck:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
At the command-line prompt type:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.

  • Using UNIX command to copy desktop files/folders

Hello All. I need help using UNIX command(s) to copy text documents and or folders from my lab computers to my desktop at home. Since I have such a slow connection, I think this will work best. I need help with the cp command and the path mostly. Since all files would be in folders on the desktop (including documents (that "missed" the folders), I believe I could simply copy desktop contents? Thanks, J Langlois

What you want to do is SCP (secure copy) your documents to your remote host.
send this command to the computer with the documents
    scp ~/Desktop/FILEOR_FOLDERNAME USERNAME@REMOTE_COMPUTER:~/Desktop/
Replace all the stuff in UPPERCASE with the correct vales for your situation.

  • How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture file?

How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture or jpeg file? I am wanting to make the image I created my background on my macbook pro.

After I had the document image the way I wanted it, I saved it as a web page and went from there. Below are the steps starting after I did the "save as" option in Word:
    1) Select "Save As Web Page". I changed the location from documents to pictures when the window came up to save it as a web page.
    2) Go to "Finder" on you main screen, or if it's on your main toolbar at the bottom.
    3) Click on the "Pictures" tab and find the file you just re-saved as a web page. (I included "web page" or something similar in the new title so I could easily find the correct file I was looking for)
    4) Open the correct file and then "right click" on the actual image. (Use 2 fingers to do so on a Mac)
    5) Select 'Use Image As Desktop Picture", and voilà! The personally created image, or whatever it is that you wanted, is now your background.
**One problem I encountered while doing this is that the image would show up like it was right-aligned in relation to the whole screen. The only way I could figure how to fix this was to go back to the very original document in Word, (the one before it was saved as a web page), and move everything over to the left.
I hope this helps someone else who was as frustrated as I was with something that I thought would have been very simple to do! If you have any tips or suggestions of your own, please feel free to share. : )

  • Changing the display name of project file folders for TOC

I'm interested in changing the display names of the project file folders for my TOC. For example, I want to name the folder "01-intro" so that it is short and lowercase. But I'd like the TOC to say "Introduction to the System." I know I can manually rename the folder in the TOC either through its properties or by right-clicking => Rename, but I auto-create the TOC occasionally and I don't want to have to rename every folder every single time.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set a persistent property for the folder so that its display name in the TOC is different? I am using RoboHelp 9. I saw an option called "Detail" in the properties of the WebHelp layout in RoboHelp 8 that seems like it may have done that, but I no longer see this property in RoboHelp 9.
Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I think the lack of response confirms that if you are going to use Auto Create, you have to accept the way it is.

  • Change "Date Created" on File Folders

What is the easiest way to change or alter the "Date Created" on file folders - To a date that is 6 months older? (OS 9.1)
I need to store my photos in a single large chronologically ordered file. Some of them are sourced from scanned photos and some are received in emails from folks.
I want to store them in the same date order as the day the photos were taken and NOT the day I filed them.
    Thanks.........Robert

    Neil and Don,
I figured out a way to allow me to change the "Date Created" to any date I desired.
    1. Open "Date & Time" file in "Control Panels".
    2. Set the date desired (i.e. 6 months earlier.)
    3. Then Close "Date & Time"
    4. Now in (finder) click on "Command + N",
This creates an "untitled file folder" on the desktop
with the newly selected "Date Created".
    5. Give the new file folder the name desired.
    6. Drag the desired files to the newly created file folder
    and drop them.
    7. Trash the OLD Date Created Folder.
    8. Remember to go back to "Date Created" in "Control
Panels" and change back to the current date.
The above took care of my original question; But, I decided to use the same technique to change the "FILE" date created,
    rather than the "FILE FOLDER".
I opened my digital camera software and took a ".jpg" photo file and did a "Save As" while "Date & Time" were in the altered state. My .jpg photo file now has the new "Date Created".
I know that Niel and Don are completely aware of such a technique, But, I figured other forum members may find this method useful.
Thanks for all of your continuing help........Robert

  • Can I change the location of adobe organizer file folders in Elements 11 from my c to d drive ?

Can I change the location of adobe organizer file folders in Elements 11 from my c to d drive ?
My laptop, which uses Windows 7, came with the hard drive divided between a C and D drive.  the C drive, where all the programs load, is nearly full, and I would like all the photos and videos that adobe elements organizer finds and that I download into load on my nearly empmty and spacious D drive.
In other programs I can change this is file prefernces, but I cant find that feature in elements.
Is it possible? and how can I do it?

    Team Ben Hur
SG will probably have more to say about his reply, but in the meanwhile you might want to check out Premiere Elements 11/Elements Organizer 11/File Menu/Catalog Manager... and the Custom Location option. I suspect that is what both of you have in mind?
When Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 are installed on the same computer, they share a common Elements Organizer (catalog) although they can be purchased as standalone products each with its own Elements Organizer (catalog).

  • I have a new ipad and want to create files for my documents I brought over from my Mac. How do I create file folders?

I would like to create file folders for my documents I brought over to my ipad from my desktop Mac. I downloaded pages and neu.annotate. My files synced without a problem. PDF articles I put in neu.annotate and pages documents into pages but I would like to organize into folders like on my desktop. How can I do this on the ipad3?

Unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system and everything on it has to be stored/associated within an app, you can't have separate folders of documents/files on your iPad's homescreens. If the apps that you have support it then you could possibly use Dropbox to store your documents within a folder structure, but you'd then need internet access in order to access them.

  • Read-Only File Folders

I have a problem with the camera/pictures and documents on my phone.  When I first purchased my Blackberry, I took it home and synced it with my computer.  When I did that the computer changed my picture file folder as well as my document file folder to read-only folders.  Now I can’t delete, rename or edit picture and documents in their respective folders.  When I went on the phone to change them back, either the computer or the Blackberry itself returned the folders to read-only folders.  Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

I suggest posting to the Xerve forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=854

  • Network files not showing when saving a document in Word 2010

I have some users setup where their local profile on their laptop syncs with our server so they can take the laptop home, work on files, bring it back to work and have it sync with files and folders when they get back.
One user is able to open a document in her "My Documents" folder (which syncs with the network drive).  She's able to edit the document however when she goes to save the document to the same folder, she doesn't see all of the files that are
supposed to be in there.  If she just saves the file anyway and goes to her documents folder via Windows Explorer, she can see the file she saved as well as the other files.
I'm not sure why it's happening but it seems to only happen when she saves a file in Word.
The affected user is running Windows 7 64-Bit with Word 2010.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
What are the other files' types in that location?
Suppose the user is trying to save a .docx file in that folder, she should only be seeing the same type of files as the type she's saving.
You can have the user try to change the "Save as type" and check if she's able to see other files.

  • Cannot Move Files/Folders on Desktop

One of the Mac Pros in my computer lab suddenly developed a strange behavior: I can't move any of the file or folder icons on the desktop, nor can I drag files/folders between windows or columns. They don't snap back to their original position; they won't move at all.
I can select the icons on the desktop and in windows, but cannot move them. This behavior is the same in my Admin account and a restricted student account.
I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility, and run Onyx (Optimize The System; Execute Maintenance Scripts; Clear: Application, Internet, Font and System Cache; Clean Recent and Temporary Items). I've relaunched the Finder several times, and zapped the PRAM. Restarting doesn't help.
    Anyone seen this before?
    Thanks,
    Robert

I'm unable to start from the Install disk; I get the "Black Veil of Death" every time (You Need To Restart Your Machine...).
Oh, well this is very much more serious than a permissions problem. I would tell you to Repair your disk, but
I can Safe Boot and choose either account. Except for the non-moving icons, the machine seems to run fine.
A Safe Boot automatically runs Repair Disk as many times as needed to fix things. Trying to start from the Install disc gives you a kernel panic, and yet you are able to Safe Boot? I don't know what could cause this.
After a Safe Boot, and in my Admin account, can I affect the changes you suggest when starting from the Install disk?
Well, not by the method I initially suggested, but you can using Terminal. But I see no point in doing that—you really need to fix the kernel panics.
However, as a temporary thing, try this.
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:
    chmod -R -N .
chmod +a "everyone deny delete" . Desktop Documents Downloads Library Movies Music Pictures Public Sites
    chmod +a "`id -un` allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directoryinherit" Public/Drop Box
That will fix things for the account you have logged in with. If you need to fix the other one, you must repeat while logged in to that account

  • Passing Files/Folders to BASH script...

I'm trying to pass a list of files and folders selected in finder to a bash script so that I can use VLC to perform some transcoding and concatenation on them.
I'm using "Get Selected Finder Items" to pass the "Files/Folders" output "As Arguments" to my script.
Problem is with spaces in the filenames. Apparently Automator delimits the list of files with spaces. So I have spaces in the filenames and spaces between the files. So my bash script just sees a list like this:
    /Users/johnt/Documents/3rd Party Audio For Conversion/WFWC - 3.6.2009 3.7.2009/01c Director Report March 6 2009.wav /Users/johnt/Documents/3rd Party Audio For Conversion/WFWC - 3.6.2009 3.7.2009/01b Comm Disc Mar 6 2009.wav
...with no way to differentiate each file. Is there a way to tell automator to escape the spaces in the file paths so that my loop doesn't try to run through $@ as:
    /Users/johnt/Documents/3rd
    Party
    Audio
    for
    ... etc etc
    Thanks

Thanks Neil, that was helpful. I'll play with that AppleScript and see what happens.
I figured this was better suited in the Automator forum since I'm trying to format the output of what Finder sends before it ever hits the Bash script. My Bash script itself has no problem, so I didn't see any point going over to the UNIX forums.
You gotta love the ability of OSX to be able to handle all sorts of technologies and integrate them well. Apparently, there's nothing Apple can do to make it's users do the same thing.

  • How Do I Hide Program Acessible Files/Folders?

Hi, lots of times when I install programs, it places useless files and folders in my most frequently used locations (e.g. Documents). This has resulted in loads of clutter and frustration. I have used programs such as Apimac's 'Secret Folder' and Altmomac's 'Hide Folders' but once files/folders are hidden they cannot be accessed by their associated programs thus inhibiting their functioning.
Is there anything I can do to hide these files/folders while allowing them to be program acessible. Thanks alot.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
The folder targeted will then disappear from the Finder; the change may not be recognized until the Finder is relaunched, which can be done by pressing the Control and Option keys while clicking on its Dock icon and choosing Relaunch. Folder can be replaced by file if needed. Your account needs to be the owner of the file or folder in question.
