File Folders Shared on XServe Renaming Weirdly

(First off, hello - I'm a brand spanking new MAC user)!
Okay, so my issue is that the file folders being shared on our server/network are displaying weird names - only on my computer.
Everyone else will see a folder with an example name of "Client-WO92" but I see that same folder as "FG3473HGD".
So far, I've only noticed that it happens within Xserve - in a shared network folder. The remainder of the folders have kept their appropriate names. (It might be important to mention that not every single shared folder has a name change but most of them do).
I've searched high and low w/ varying keywords and can't seem to find any discussion or solution on this, so anything would be helpful as its annoying wasting an hour just trying to find a file!
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
You can edit the shared folder’s security permissions from Windows. Right click the shared folder and select 'Properties', under the 'Security' tab click 'Edit'.
For more detaile information, please refer to the “Users can create their own folders and edit the permissions on Windows” part in the article below:

  • Renaming files/folders on desktop: weird.

    Hi
Since I have OSX Lion, and I want to rename files/folders on my desktop nothing happens.
Or at least not what is suppose to happen. Pressing enter in a finder window works perfect, like always.
But when I hit enter on a file or folder on my desktop it go's blank.
I can't see what i'm doing, but the name will change if I typ a new one. Quit confusing and realy difficult to work with. Any idea's how to fix this?

This has been driving me nuts but I accidentally found the cause...but not the solution.  It is a Lion thing as spaces did not have this issue.
I am assuming you are using multiple screens (mission control, formerly spaces).  If you go to screen 1 and try to rename the file you CAN see the name as you rename it.  If you go to any other screen and try to rename it you get the blank space.
In my case I never rename files on my main screen.  I always rename them on which ever screen I am working (word is screen 5, so docx saved to the desktop are renamed on screen 5).

I am unable to rename, move or trash any of the files/folders on my desktop.  Dialogue tells me to "get info", and change permissions, enter my password but the file remains on the desktop.  I can save to a file on the desktop but often do not have "permissionP to save in other locations.  What to do?  I would like to get this cleared up before Lion  comes out.  Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

  • File renaming weirdness

I hope someone can straighten me out here. I moved a bunch of jpegs to the desk top so I could rename them. I created a folder and tried to move them there. It copied the jpegs to the folder but the originals stayed on the desktop. anyway, when I tried to rename the files they all changed to these weird exe files. So I gave up and tried to trash them but I got an error message saying I could not perform the operation because xx.jpeg is locked. What is that all about? I'm just moving stuff around, why am I getting all this weirdness and I can't even give up and just trash everything?

It does sound like something is really messed up.
I'd boot from your Install Disk ASAP...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Cannot rename files, folders and drives

tried to GRAB the error message, and it's hanged when I tried to save the image.....
There are problems on rename files, folders and drives, also have problem to delete things....
    what can I do.....!!!!

Ok, finally i just reboot the machine and it is fine now.
I guess there are some bugs related to the user permissions...
Indeed, I encountered a few bugs and they were fixed by rebooting the machine.
More details: I am using a early 2008 version mac pro with mountain lion and upgrade os to mavericks last nite.
At first, it cannot connect to my wifi network, it kept asking me to enter password for my network but kept saying it s failed. After trial to fix it by a few methods which were failed, i gave up and reboot, and vala~ It worked again..
Then i tried to rename my system drive as it was named "mountain lion", and i just want to rename it to "mavericks", error popped out, and i found that i cant rename folders or files, or put them in trash.... Again, it worked again after reboot!!!!
Guys, for those who wannna upgrade to mavericks now, better wait for a few more weeks till some update come up n fix those issues....

  • Files/folders created in Windows share are read-only... why and how to fix?

    Client: MacBook Pro running 10.7.5
    Server: Windows 7 desktop
I'm sharing a folder from the Windows 7 machine and mounting it on my Mac using Finder's "Connect to Server..." and an smb:// URI. I'm providing a user ID/password for an account on the Windows 7 box that has full control over the shared folder, via smb://userid:password@server/share.
The volume mounts properly on my desktop, can I can see files/folders there as expected. However:
If I create a folder, it's read-only. I cannot create any files inside (or even see inside), rename the folder, or delete the folder. The folder has a badge: red circle with bar.
If I create a file, it's read-only. I cannot rename it, delete it or edit it.
If I examine File Info via Finder on any of these files or folders, under Sharing & Permissions it says "You have custom access."
If I try to delete these files/folders, I get error code -8072. I can delete them from the command-line, but I can't otherwise manipulate them.
I've verified on the Windows box that the user ID I'm using has full control of the folder. I've also set it so Everyone has full control, with no difference.
This seems to have been a recent change in behaviour (a few weeks ago I was copying data to this drive, no problem), and it's driving me crazy because I can't figure out how to fix it.

  • OneDrive for Business/SharePoint API - GET folders 'shared with me' if shared from a group/s.

Does anybody have any ideas of how to get the list of folders shared with a user from a group?
I can already retrieve files shared with a user from another user with:
    https://{tenant}-my.sharepoint.com/_api/search/query?querytext='(SharedWithUsersOWSUSER: {account_name} AND contentclass:STS_ListItem_MySiteDocumentLibrary)'
but this end point does not show any of the files if they were shared from a group, is this possible with the REST API?
Thanks for any help in advance.

    Hi SpringComp,
You can change the root path for libraries you sync to your computer, though you can do this only if you’re not currently syncing any libraries. If you’re already syncing at least one library and you want to change the path, you must first
stop syncing all libraries. Then, the first time you run the OneDrive for Business wizard to sync a library to your computer, you’ll see an option to change the location.
More information, please refer to the link:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/support/change-the-location-where-you-sync-sharepoint-libraries-on-your-computer-HA102893480.aspx
    I hope this helps.

  • Read-only access permissions for new files/folders?

    System:
Clean Install on new intel Xserve
    10.4.8 Server w/ Open Directory
Windows clients can read/write completely fine...
Clients connecting using AFP (whether Standard or Kerberos authentication) can access files, but when new files/folders are created on the server, they register as full permissions for the user who created them, but not for the rest of the group.
The share(s) in question are set using POSIX from WGM: Full access for owner/group/everyone (changed it to this thinking it would help, but it does not). Of course, no one can make changes to a newly-created/deposited files/folders, which is just plain silly.
I can chmod the permissions recursively from a script (which fixes the problem, of course) on a regular basis so that its not (as much of) an issue, but there is still a 5-minute lag for the script to kick in, since we don't want to bombard the server with chmod requests every minute....which is unnecessary in the first place!
I have plenty of other setups which are identical but have no such issue...
Any reason why POSIX permissions on the share are being ignored from every user account?
    Thanks,
    k

"That's default posix behaviour no matter what access permissions you set on the sharepoint."
I'm afraid this is dead wrong. What matters most is how you set permissions on the share, not if you've chosen to inherit vs. using POSIX. POSIX is still used in inherit functions, though you can use ACL's to override them. In this case, ACL's are not being used on those shares (though we tried it).
After all, why would Apple (let alone anyone else) even offer the ability to change POSIX permissions on a share if it didn't have any effect? That would be somewhat contradictory in nature.
Like I said before, I have several other installations which are identically setup that have no such issues.
As for Windows, it is also not set to inherit permissions; we're setting those explicitly. And they work fine.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    k

  • Not allowed to move (only copy) files within Shared Folder (yes, permissions are set to Read/Write)

I have moved my media (Music, Movies, Pictures) to the Users/Shared folder.  As I'm doing some cleanup in these folders, I am trying to move several folders/files at once, all within the same Shared folder.  I have confirmed that the permissions settings under "Get Info" are set to "Read/Write" and I have verified and repaired permissions with Disk Utility.  However, every move I try to do is a copy.  I have tried the Command-Drag method, but I'm still left with the green plus sign indicating a copy.
On smaller files/folders, this wouldn't matter so much as I would copy, then just delete the original.  But I'm dealing with many, many gigs of music and my HD doesn't have space for holding copies, even if the originals will be deleted.
Very frustrating to have to spend so much time to figure out what would seem to be a very basic file management feature.
I've searched and read and searched some more, but I'm stuck.  Thanks to any who can help.

Do have file sharing and remote login checked
When on Betty's computer, Sign into Bob's computer with Bob's username & Bob's Password, instead of Betty's.
    BINGO!!!!  Problem solved.  Many thanks!!!

  • Changing the display name of project file folders for TOC

I'm interested in changing the display names of the project file folders for my TOC. For example, I want to name the folder "01-intro" so that it is short and lowercase. But I'd like the TOC to say "Introduction to the System." I know I can manually rename the folder in the TOC either through its properties or by right-clicking => Rename, but I auto-create the TOC occasionally and I don't want to have to rename every folder every single time.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set a persistent property for the folder so that its display name in the TOC is different? I am using RoboHelp 9. I saw an option called "Detail" in the properties of the WebHelp layout in RoboHelp 8 that seems like it may have done that, but I no longer see this property in RoboHelp 9.
Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I think the lack of response confirms that if you are going to use Auto Create, you have to accept the way it is.

  • Leopard can't see files/folders in .dmg Tiger backup

Okay, I have two macs, an old upgraded Cube and my MacBook Pro. I used CCC to create disk images of both and put them on an external firewire drive.
Both disk images mounted just fine, so I went ahead with my Leopard install (did a clean install) on my MacBook Pro.
Now I want to get my files Apps and such off my .dmg. I plug the Firewire drive into my MacBook Pro and open the .dmg. The only folders showing up in there are dev, Developer, Library, sw, System, Updaters and Users. GAH! Where's my Applications folder among several other missing ones?! I thought CCC didn't back it up after all.
So I plugged the Firewire drive into my Cube and opened the .dmg there and ALL the folders and files show up in the Finder on the Cube still running Tiger. Okay, I CAN manually copy over all the files by mounting my MacBook Pro hard drive on the Cube and telling the Cube what to move over. But this is really slow.
One more thing, I just went into the volume in terminal on the Leopard machine, and ls'ed the dir and it shows all the files/folders in there. However, all the folders that aren't displaying in the finder show the permissions with an @ symbol after them, the ones that show up don't have that.
drwxrwxr-x@ is in front of the missing Applications folder.
drwxrwxr-t is in front of the Users folder that does show up.
Anyone got any idea why Leopard isn't seeing these files and how I might be able to fix this?
Another update to this mystery. When I mount the .dmg on my Tiger machine and look at the file perms in terminal, that @ isn't there.
One more thing. My husband ran CCC on his MacBook Pro to a different firewire drive, and he did not have this problem. We ran it the same way, made .dmg files of our Macintosh HD's. But his Leopard is showing him all his .dmg files when he opens it. He also did the same clean install. Weird huh?

  • Files/folders not showing up with Airport Disk but are there?

I've recently bought the Airport Extreme, I was all excited about Airport Disk but there is a weird, extremly annoying bug.
On my USB hard drive connected using Airport Disk, I have a folder called music. When I open this folder, OS X starts reading the directory and files/folders show up one by one, but then it just all disappears - and the folder shows nothing. In Windows, it shows nothing at all in the folder. However, when I reconnect the drive using USB to my MacBook Pro, all my music is there and I can see all the files.
I have a feeling this is something to do with this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305040
as I have German and Japanese music files imported by iTunes which are not named in English (ie the filenames are encoded in Japanese etc etc)
Another strange thing is, in Windows, if I type the direct path to a folder (which is inside the supposed empty folder) I will be able to access it.
    What's going on Apple?...
    Anyone else got this issue?...
    Thanks
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Everyone,
I was experiencing the same. on the XP box it just wouldnt show anything period and on the Mac, the finder would briefly display the contents of the drive before disappearing. Spoke to Tier 2 and they thought I should reformat the drive, since he thought it likely that due to severing the drives connection that the format was corrupt...
I did manage to fix it myself and I'll tell you how. First I hardwired the drive via USB to the Mac. noticed an item called FROM which had no size, no date modified and type was --. I deleted the RECYCLED folder (which results when you delete something from the drive thru XP)
then i hardwired it to the PC. deleted the "FROM" folder which in this case was a file folder, and 237MB approx in size. I also deleted the ".DSStore" and ".Trashes" files. .DSStore is basically the icon cache and .Trashes is when you delete something on the airdisk from the Mac. reconnected the drive and POOF! it worked Problem is now solved.
So to summate, i think in my case it was more the discrepancy between the FROM not showing up as anything on the Mac, versus it being a full fledged folder to windows xp. i just thought i would pass this along...

  • I am accessing a windows server using remote desktop and I am wondering if I can transfer files by sharing drives?

I am accessing a windows server using remote desktop and I am wondering if I can transfer files by sharing drives?

Probably. You may be able to use Finder > Go > Connect to server to access the server. You may be able to share folders using Remote Desktop too. Whichever one you like the best.

  • Too many files/folders in a directory poor performance

We have an XServe running 10.6.2 with a large Fibre Channel Raid from ACNC. One of the shares is used for archive and has a lot of files/folders in it and as such takes a while to display and search. Is there any way to speed this up other than the obvious of not keeping so many in one directory? I am getting resistance to breaking it up into subfolders though that obviously is the best solution. What is the level at which performance degrades? Any documentation or info on this? Thanks!

While all file systems support large numbers of files in a directory, any directory system performance degrades as the number of files increases. The actual number may vary from file system to file system (e.g. UFS, HFS+, NTFS, EXT2/3/4... the list goes on) but it's always there.
In pure technical terms, the performance starts to degrade on single-digit (typically 4 - 10) number of files since past that the directory index exceeds a single block on disk but the difference between reading one block and two isn't noticeable to the average human. In practical terms, on most direct-attached storage you'll see a performance drop at around 10,000 files. By 20,000 it's noticeable.
These numbers can be far worse over a network connection since it has to be read by the server before it can be passed over the network and re-parsed by the client.
There isn't much of an option other than to strip the directories down.

  • How can my main user access files of sharing only user?

I use network MFD to scan files into shared folders through Samba. Works perfectly fine on Windows: scanner uses its own limited account to access shared folder and store files, but Windows admin user is the owner of this folder and of all of the PDFs in it.
I wanted to setup same system under Mac OS X 10.9.4. I created sharing only user "scanner" for my network MFD to access shared "Scan" folder on my MacBook Air through Samba. I shared this "Scan" folder for both my main MacBook user and "scanner" user with read/write permissions. Now if my network scanner logs on to the shared folder with username/password of my main user (and I consider this insecure and wrong) - everything works fine. But if network scanner uses its special "scanner" account, it creates file which I can't open later with my main MacBook user ("scanner" is the owner of this file, and "main" doesn't have permission even to read the file).
Looks like newly created files in shared folder don't inherit permissions of the folder.
Is there a way to force my main MacBook account to be owner of all files created by "scanner" account (at least in one folder used for scan results)?

Create a “scannergroup” group in Users & Groups. It’s the same process as for a user, but change the type to Group. Add all of your real users and your scanner user to the group.
Open Terminal and copy/paste this command into the terminal window. If you want to use different names for the Group or the folder, edit the line in a text editor, then copy/paste it into Terminal.
    sudo chmod -R +a "scannergroup allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/Scan
To change the group name in the command, change scannergroup to whatever you create in Users & Groups.
To change the folder, change the full path as shown by /Users/Shared/Scan
That command creates an Access Control List entry that allows each member of the scannergroup to read/write/delete/ items created by others in the group.
