File Format / Codec Problem

I have Premiere Elements 9 installed and when I try to get media from AVI files for video taken with my sealife 1400DC, I get an error message that complains about the file being the wrong format or codec not being installed, is there a fix for this error?  the file will play on windows media player..

larryl
From what I have read of your camera's specifications, the video is recorded with MotionJPEG video compression which can be a problem for Premiere Elements (any version). File extension is .avi.
It is a toss up whether the codec is not installed or whether Premiere Elements is not recognizing it.
The classical remedies are
1. Look for a utility that came with your camera, and install it to supply the needed codec
2. Convert the video to another format
3. Download and install a MotionJPEG codec from Online (not free)...for informational purposes only, the Morgan MotionJPEG video codec has been
used successful by those who explored this possibility. Definitely go the codec tryout route which Morgan does offer
http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/morgan/php/products.php?sProductId=4&sProductSub=download s
And, if it works for you, then decide if it is worth the investment as a purchase.
Please let us know the outcome.
Thank you.

• CS4 Premiere Pro General file format & preview problems

I was redirected here after posting my complaint on Twitter, so please excuse my forum manner.
I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4) for about a year now, and I've been editing videos along with other packages with no problem. (Only problem being my slow processor). Up until last week Premiere Pro has been completely fine. But seeing I have a project deadline next month, I thought I would spend a day trying to kick-start the video editing.
My source videos were originally photograph-frames animated in Flash CS4 into .MOV, decided to use the H.264 output codec. As I have finished exporting my needed videos, I imported them into Premiere Pro as usual, as I have in the past. But then I encountered the common problem that I have seen quite a few have also encountered with .MOV, or jsut general "no-preview" problem when the source video is fine.
I then took a day to research online about Premiere Pro's compatability with .MOV, among other container and formats. Upon using softwares such as MediaInfo and GSpot, I found that there might have been a problem with missing Codecs within my Adobe package. I then tried to convert the .MOV into .MPG (mpeg2), hoping such standard codec would work with Premiere Pro as they they in the past. No result avail.
I then turned to the uninstall route (retaining user info) and re-installing. The problem has NOT been fixed, what's more is that it crashes almost instantly after I try rendering the workplace. (Even post-rendering does not show the preview, but the files in the Adobe folder, does). Here's a screencap to my latest workplace, if it helps:

Before the re-install, I believe I was running Premiere Pro CS4's latest update (4.2.x) something, now it is back to 4.0.0. But I don't think that is where the main problem is? I recently changed my locale from a certain language to Japanese to run a certain program. Would that be causing the problem(s)?
Does anyone know a way that I can FIX this? Any help is appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
I am using a Sony Vaio NS series laptop,
a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core processor
3GB RAM,
intergrated graphics Intel Chipset Family Series 4( I think).
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I tried moving the Scratch disks from an external portable hard drive to the local hard drive, to no result.
Again, any help is appreciated. I would appreciate direct advice rather than links. Thanks again.
Neo.

I have updated my CS4, Ppro to 4.2.1. The problem still remains. Would it have anything to do with my project setting? I don't have much knowledge to setting one up. The difference between the AVC projects and etc?
EDIT : I took the problem to my lecturer, and he didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but his "magic touch" click on the preview panel (Main composition) has made the video show up! But even after render, it won't play. But scrubbing along frames is now fixed. Any idea what's causing the no-preview-playback?

• Final Cut Express file format - audio problem

I have some .mov files created from a screen capture session that I need to edit in Final Cut Express.
They were saved in .H264 format and I need to convert them to one of FCE's native formate. I THOUGHT I could do this by exporting in the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC formal in Quicktime Pro (7). However, I do not have an AIFF option in the audio. So, when importing into FCE, I can see the video in my timeline, but the audio needs to rendered. Is there a way I can get the video with the native audio format?
Thanks,
DR

Well, that took care of the sound problem. However, the video is not right. It is displaying at a very slow frame rate, and does not keep up with the audio.
My workaround so far is to convert it to dv musing MPEG Streamclip. Switching to "re-sample at 48000 hz" is not working, but once I import it into FCE, I can render the audio and cut using that.
Not the most elegant solution, but it works.

• What format/codec to post web videos?

At work they want to post videos we produce on our web site. They will range from a minute to an hour or more. We have heard pitches from companies that do all the work for us, all we have to do is upload the files and provide an interface on our web site. Viewers will not have to install player software, it will just "work" like YouTube.
But of course, the suits decided that was a bad idea, and we will be compressing the files ourselves and hosting it on some server space that comes in at the lowest bid. Our potential viewers will probably not be web savvy, and may be reluctant to download new player software or plugins. Few of our employees even know what the word codec means, and have begun happily compressing files using random settings, and not concerned about quality. (They are also not concerned that they are shooting stuff on HD cameras in 16:9 and using it in 4:3 projects, and people look really skinny).
My question is, what file format/codec to use? We are mostly editing on Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (with Compressor). Perhaps we should do it "Wild West" style, and let everybody compress their programs their own way, maybe different every time they do something? That way, the home computer user is bound to find at least one video that will play on their computer.
Sigh!

FCE and FCpro are both editors, no converter tools.. allthough they allow to use the QT-engine to create a few codecs..
I would consider flv as a 'standard', by sheer market power of youtube.
but that is no codec in FCE's options .
my workflow, in 10.6. would be:
in FCE: Export QT movie (not QT compression!)
open that file with QT_X
choose upload to YT
use 'embbed'-code offered by YT on my site..
.. perhaps, that is too simple..
with FCE you have NO option, to generate a 'web video'; any export needs Quicktime on end-user's side.. FCE doesn't offer flash-video as option.. you need 3rd party apps for that, plus some skills to integrate into a webside, resp. set-up some 'video server' ..
Compressor allows flv as export. still, integration into 'web' unanswered ..
1h webvideo? phpheewww ... that asks for 'streaming video' ..

• List of supported file formats??

Hey all -
I am looking for a list of files that FCP supports. I need to send out a list to my pro staff so they know what file formats to get their video in before sending it to me. I looked at the FCP specs but didn't find this info.
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks!
Tim

By the time you combine resolutions, frame rates and compression codecs, FCP will literally support 100's of combinations.
The only somewhat abbreviated list can be found under the System Settings dialog, Effects Handling.
These are the file types FCP can typically handle with little or no rendering (real-time).
You should establish a resolution, frame rate and file format (codec), or a very short list, and tell them that's your preference. You do not (probably) want dozens of different FCP compatible files delivered for editing.

• File Format Not Recognized

This problem is relentless!
Recently my ATV is having a file format recognition problem when I attempt to play any content that is streamed between my iMac and ATV. (Note, this streaming was previously done over my AirPort Extreme wirelessly. I have since connected the ATV via ethernet directly to the AP Extreme--the iMac has always been ethernet connected. The change had no impact on the filr format error)
All of my media is stored on one of three external drives that are connected to my iMac.
The file format recognition problem goes away temporarily when I close and restart iTunes (8.2). So my new thoughts are that it is possible that my drives are spinning down (going to sleep) and then I go to use ATV to access the drive, but it has spun down.
Can anyone give me (a newb) some advice/instructions on how to prevent my drives from spinning down? I have downloaded NoSpin 3.3 (the trial version), but this doesn't appear to be preventing the drives from sleeping.
-ATV connected via ethernet to AirPort Extreme router
-iMac connected via ethernet to AP Extreme router
-Not syncing files, just streaming
-Media files located on three external drives: music, tv shows, movies
-I have recreated my iTunes library already.
-Problem existed even before the 2,4 upgrade. Thought the upgrade seems to have made it much worse.
-Restarting iTunes works, but only until the video finishes. when i try to play another, it gives the error.
Any thoughts?

(Apologies for the above mis-post. Copy & Paste error)
Alright, great news! It seems the 'file format' issue has been resolved. I made two changes tonight, one intentional, the other not.
1. Installed 'Keep Drive Spinning' and set the app to touch each drive on 60 second intervals.
2. Rather than connecting directly to my iTunes library, I connected to another library. The second library was created during troubleshooting as many 'solutions' had suggested recreating the iTunes library. After the recreation of my library I still experienced the 'file format' error, but never did delete the excess library. It was this library to which I directed the ATV as a 'shared' library rather than the default (or primary) library.
I have now successfully watched four full TV Show episodes without experiencing any freezing or 'file format' errors.
If any readers have questions, please reply to this post. Also, I will continue to test this as a viable solution and will report any issues.

• Problem with video support file format VOB (Video Object)

I have created a project with VOB files which premiere pro cs4 supported orginally but after an update from adobe it now suddenly it will not recognize them, marking them in the timeline as 'Media offline'. I have tryed to relink them but I kept running into the same problem - 'File format not supported'. I have checked Premiere pro cs4 help and it states that it does support VOB files which it did orginally. I can not tell if it is a codecs problem or not. Help anyone???

Ken Selvidge ([email protected])

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

• Error while opening pdf in reader in windows 8:Can't open this file. There's a problem with file format

I have a problem with a pdf file which does not open with reader in windows 8 but it opens properly with adobe pdf reader. All other pdf can be opened in reader. But when i open a pdf(see this link for pdf for which i got error http://incometaxsoft.com/temp/Form.pdf)
it gives error as "Can't open this file. There's a problem with file format".
The same file opens properly in adobe pdf reader. You can check the pdf file which i have mentioned in the link above. But the reader which comes with windows 8 can open some other pdf in the same PC.What may be the error causing this??

This has turned out to be an enormous issue for me as I sell PDF files as ebooks. I have done a fair amount of investigating this for my system.
My files have to be compatible not just across readers but across operating systems.
To date, I have over 200 PDFs that have functioned flawlessly across Mac, PC (Windows 7 and below), Android, iPhone/iPad, Linux.
I personally test my PDFs using a variety of readers and PDF editors including
PDF XChange (my favorite)
Foxit (runner up for me and I recommend for most people)
Adobe (the bloated monster)
Nitro 9 (great for moving graphical elements around)
ABBYY
And the Nuance PDF Create toolsets
Those are off the top of my head. There are a bunch on Android that I test with too.
I am running the Windows 10 Pro Tech Preview and I have this same problem so I know it isn't fixed yet in any kind of pre-release way (-sigh-)
Here is what I've learned for my situation
The PDFs I created using NUANCE'S PDF CREATE PROFESSIONAL VERSION 8
all fail using the built-in Windows 8/10 PDF reader.
When I look at the PDF properties for these Nuance created files, the underlying engine used to write them is called "ImageToPDF". Using ABBYY it indicates their own engine as does everyone else that I've tried. It is easy for you to check to see
what created your PDF by doing a "Control D" (look at the document properties). Perhaps there's a common engine causing issues.
If I use the exact same source files to create a PDF using any of my other tools I have no issues. I checked the PDF versions made by the tools and they are all set to 1.5.
A customer mentioned being able to convert them in a way they worked by saving them without having to do any kind of extraction, but I have not been able to duplicate that. Perhaps he did a "print" which seems like it could work.
In summary, the workaround everyone is talking about, using an alternate reader, of course works. But not everyone wants to change.
The culprit I have found is my Nuance PDF Creation tools that are using the ImageToPDF engine.
I hope it gets FIXED as I really don't want to have to regenerate all of my PDF files.

• Excel File Format Problem while downloading in ALV Grid

Hi All,
My program gives an ALV Grid Output which contains the file download button , when I choose spread sheet as the file format , the actual data starts only from 4th line and the lines above it contain date, heading etc and the rest are blank. Is it possible that I can download only the records in the grid output with the column names and not the unnecessary log?
Also the format is not proper excel format, this same file will be used for upload into another program using the Function Module 'TEXT_CONVERT_XLS_TO_SAP'. When I load the file saved in the above format, this Function Module always fails.
Please let me know any solution for this problem
Thanks in Advance.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

• Problems emailing any other file format other than a .jpg

I am having problems emailing any other file format other than a .jpg in mac Mail in Leopard. Is anyone else having this problem?
I have tried PDF, .tif and .doc documents, and they are small files, less than 150 kb. I have checked to ownership on the images and it says that I can read and write to them. I have also checked with my ISP and my mailbox capacity is 10 MB and was recently emptied. I am able to log into my ISP's webmail portal and send these types of attachments through there successfully, which has made me convinced that it has to do with Leopard or Mac Mail because I did not have these problems in Tiger.
When I send a message like this, Mail says, "Sending" for a while, and then says "Cannot send message using server:(Name of my server) Sending the message content to the server failed. Select a different outgoing mail server."

I've been sending .doc files with/without also .jpg as attachments without problems so it is possibly not a Leopard problem. I know this doesn't solve your problem though. Someone else may be able to solve the problem.

• Rendering file formats problem (non-issue in premier)

hello all,
so i'm new to final cut and baffled at the unusual render issues i've encountered from the get go.
i recorded some video using the canon fs-10 / fs-20, a lowend digital camcorder.
the camera outputs the format to .mod which i then converted to .mpeg4.
without any editing in FC, a single clip needs to render just to view it in the canvas but plays ok in the viewer. does this make any sense?
i've even tried to convert to .mov and .avi.
when i used a different camera that automatically records in .mov, final cut plays back in the canvas just fine without rendering.
so,
1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back? it plays back in the viewer but not the canvas. baffling.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
thanks!

Just grabbing software, and throwing video files at it, without taking the time to read or learn HOW this said application works, isn't wise. FCP isn't Premiere...FCP doesn't just take in any old QT file and then work with it. No. It needs to be converted to a format that FCP works with. What you see in the EASY SETUP list is what FCP works with.
If you don't bother to learn the basics of the application, then things won't go smoothly. If you just want to grab QT files and throw them into an application to start editing, then use Premiere.
1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
If it isn't in the Easy Setup list...FCP will want to render it. If you mix two or more codecs in a sequence, then FCP will render the footage that differs from the main footage you are editing with.
2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back?
Because It is viewable in the Viewer...that's just a window to the QT file. But the canvas is where things are put together. And that is where settings are determined.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
Basic files that aren't in editable codecs. At least ones that FCP (and Avid) work with. If you want an app that just works with stuff you throw at it, Premiere and Vegas are for you.

Hi,
Firstly, your country is detemined by several factors, including your phone's regional settings, your SIM card and your NokiaAccount settings, if you used this phone whilst abroad then you may need to check that your regional and account settings are up to date since you have arrived in Canada.
For services like Gigs, you should also ensure that the MixRadio app has access to your phone's GPS location as well as the main location being on in the phone settings. To check this, as well as Location being turned on in the phone settings, in MixRadio itself go to Settings>Location>On:
The concern with favourites may also be related to location, if the music from certain artists is available in Canada but not where the service might think you are, availability of content may vary from region to region.
If all settings in both the phone, your Nokia Account and the MixRadio app are correct, we may have to investigate deeper.
It is impossible to comment on your camera without seeing it, you cold have the phone checked by Nokia Care locally, but of course if it was supplied in Europe it will be covered by the European Limited Warranty which is not valid in Canada.
If this or any post answers your question, please remember to help others by pressing the 'Accept as solution' button.
