File format which cannot be edited when reviewed by clients?

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could please tell me how to save an AI file so that no one can edit the content?  I need to show a person something I designed, but I do not want it to be editable, but I want to preserve the high resolution, etc.  I tried saving it in JPEG and reopened the file in AI, but I was able to edit it and all the edges were jagged even though I deselected "anti-alias".  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Once the design has been approved by my client and is ready to be sent to the printer, I will contact them to see what file format(s) they need, etc.
Again, PDF. Nowadays, whole document designs are typically delivered as press-ready PDFs. This avoids the older practice of sending an "ouput bundle" (the native page document, all fonts used, all external files linked). Most decent design programs provide a feature for automating the gathering of an ouput bundle. Illustrator does not.
However, I am a bit confused with all the prepress tasks involved in Illustrator CS5.
Exporting PDF (Save a Copy As...; same thing), you need to choose the proper PDF export options. AI comes with a few pre-sets, one of which is Press Ready. In most cases, that will be fine. Think of exporting a PDF as sort of capturing the print stream on its way to the printer. Native constructs get "broken down" to simpler objects that a PostScript printer's RIP can understand. So in a sense, creating a PDF is, in itself, sort of a printability check. The PDF will be printable...but that doesn't mean you've built everything right in the document for good printing results.
I have already set the Document Effects Raster Setting to the highest setting in order to make sure that all my effects are high resolution when exported.
The highest setting? And what would that be? You can key any PPI value you want into the Document Raster Effects Setting dialog.
Diane, how do you determing the appropriate resoution setting for raster effects?
FYI, my design contains gradients, shadows and transparency
Gradient fills are not raster effects; they are computed. They are unaffected by Document RASTER Effect Setting.
Shadows are raster effects if they are blurred, and/or if they interact transparently with other objects in such a way as to require rasterization. If they are not blurred, and if they have transparency applied that can be flattened without rasterization, then again, Document Raster Effects Setting does not apply.
so I am unsure if it needs to be Flattened or does the printing company usually do that?
Depending on the PDF version you save the press-ready PDF as, the necessary flattening will occur as you save the PDF. This is where my earlier admonition about good printing results comes in. For example: Designers who don't really know (or don't really pay attention to) what they are doing will often commit this error:
Apply an effect that will require rasterization to an object.
Stack that object on top of objects that are going to look really bad if rasterized (ex: partially overlapping body text).
Save it as a press-ready PDF.
The file prints correctly (technically), but looks like amateurish crap.
Why? Because the uncovered portions of the overlapped object are sliced and diced by the flattening process into vector objects, and the adjacent overlapped portions are rasterized. The difference is visible, distracting, and ugly in the final output.
What is the most common procedure as far as prepress tasks are concerned?
Practices depend on specific situations. It is ridiculous to expect to receive a foolproof primer on all the caveats you may encounter in an online forum. You have to learn as you go, pay attention to what you are doing, and test. That's what contract proofs are all about; they catch errors before committing to an expensive press-setup.
But you can test your own files alot (and educate yourself in the process) using Acrobat Pro. Preview the color separations plates in Acrobat. Zoom in and see what kind of objects are actually there.
You can easily teach yourself what is actually going on with features like raster effects, the Document Raster Effects Setting, and flattening by creating a few simple objects, applying the effects, flattening the objects, and dissecting the results. Save the file as a press-ready PDF, but turn off the Maintain Illustrator Editability option. Then open the resulting PDF in Illustrator and dissect it. You'll begin to figure out what is actually going on and common sense will guide you away from bad practices and toward workarounds to prevent ugly surprises in the final output.
The following soapbox comments are not directed to you, Diane, so don't take offense--none is intended. You are at least thinking about such things. But this forum is public, and those with ears to hear can benefit.
That's the problem with these kinds of programs. In an attempt to isolate the "creative" user from anything remotely technical, they are filled with click & drag interfaces for instant-gratification effects which tend to hide basic facts about what's going on that the designer really needs to understand.
Before programs like Illustrator started mixing raster and vector features (especially so-called "live raster effects") the same imagery could be (and was) built. But it had to be deliberately built object-by-object by the designer, not with click & drag instant-gratification features. As a result, earlier digital designers developed a better understanding of what was actually going on behind all the smoke and mirrors.
Nowadays, too many wannabe designers think they can just be prima-dona "creatives" without involving themselves in any technical matters. That's a recipe for costly disaster in print.
That's what I mean when I repeatedly say that it is folly to pick up a program like this and just jump into doing commerical work with it before thoroughly readilng the documentation. None of this is rocket science, and I don't mean to suggest it is. But a print designer can't just knock around in a program, thinking his responsibilty ends with making something look good on a computer monitor. That's the rude awakening web-centric designers encounter when first trying to design for print; just because something looks right on screen doesn't ensure it's going to look right in print.

No way. CS4 is not compatible with OSX 10.10/ Yosemite. You need new software...

  • CS4 - Getting error when opening a .gif file - file-format module cannot parse the file.

I am getting this popup error when trying to open a .gif file:
"Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."
This comes up every time I try to open a .gif file.  Even if I make a .gif file (like the image included in this post), save it and then try to open it again, I get the same error.  I tried reinstalling CS4, but the error is still there.  I have also done the reset on start-up and nothing.  Some have suggested that I open it in (Windows XP Pro) MS Paint and then save it again.  Did it and this does NOT work for me, either.
I know it's a Photoshop problem because I can see this file everywhere, except Photoshop.  It will open here, there and everywhere, except for Photoshop.
I've searched the Adobe Commmunity and it looks like no one has come up with a fix for this.  I'm just currious after 5 years with this problem, has there been a solution?

If you are working with a file you modified in Lightroom, you should go to the Lightroom Photo menu and choose Edit in... and the version of Photoshop you want to open it in.
There a dialog will ask if you want to transfer the LR settings you made to your photo when you open in Photoshop.

  • "...file-format module cannot parse the file" Error

I am using PS CS3 Extended on a PC
I keep getting the error...file-format module cannot not parse the file" errors when attempting to open PNG or GIF files that were created using the same version of Photoshop.
I used to have to reboot the machine to get rid of this error - but that is no longer working.
The error is occuring more and more frequently.
I really need to edit these files.
Please tell me how to fix this.
I have seen this error in the forum - but was unable to find a real solution. Rebooting the machine is not really a solution.
    Thanks

Thanks for trying Chris but the files are not corrupted. They open sometimes in CS4, and always do in CS3 and Elements 6, as well as on another computer. I'm talking about all my PNG files. They work most of the time, just not all of the time. If I close down PS CS4 and open it again they open just fine for a while before the problem starts again.
I reset all preferences to factory defaults and uninstalled/ re-installed again this morning so now I'll see what happens.

  • File-format module cannot parse the file

What does the error message: "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file." mean? I made the png image in PS. Now it can't parse it, but I don't know what that means or how to correct it.

    Dear Curious,
I volunteer my time too. I help others learn about Adobe software. I am not "trained" in this, but learn as I go. I have never had the warning I wrote about and that is why I posted. I thought as much, but posted anyway to be sure that I wasn't missing some clue. I deal with a large number of applications and all levels of members. It may be easy to be glib, but the hours I spend helping others is as valid as yours. I may not have points, but that is because I don't 'know' all I feel I should to answer. We each contribute as we can. I do wish I had more training, and I work on line with the Lynda.com series. Thank you for your help. I hope your curiosity is satisfied. :-)

  • Over Time iMovie Files Corrupt -Which is an issue when I'm trying to backup

    Hi,
Please correct me if I'm posting this in the wrong section, but I've used iMovie for several years now and I'm finding that a lot of the movies I once finished and left alone for long periods of time won't copy to my backup hardrive (they will show up, but take up 0kb of space) and when I open them from the original files they are missing clips.
Maybe this is an effect of creating projects in old iMovies and updating them to iMovie HD 6 (I don't use 8 or 9). Most of these movies I once backed up onto DVDs when they were still fine.
Any suggestions on how to best backup the files either from the DVDs or the files (which might be corrupt?) while retaining all the data and decent quality?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

that 'error' can not be related to iM nor 'degragation of files in time'.. iM handles digital (1/0) files.. if a file gets corrupted somehow, it is +in toto+ distroyed, not as an old VHS (analogue) which shows scarmble, noise, etc.
converting to highly compressed mp4 will add additional damage.. any compressor 'summarize' small faults&dots&noise (from tape! not from 'time') to bigger artifacts.. in terms of quality, keept iM's original, 'native' dv files (your projecst were dv? ).
    I'm still puzzled about your 'rusty' projects.. ( ?? ) ..
last Qs: are your projects any imports from TV recordings.. ?

  • "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."

I have recently upgraded to PS CS5, operating on an imac with Mac OSX Lion.
Every now and then I get the message above when trying to open certain Raw (CR2)  files in photoshop Raw converter.
If I try to only open the one specific raw file I get the above message, although if I open multiple raw files in one go, they all open fine, although when I scroll down to the image that can't be parsed I either get this mesage "Unable to swith to the current image. There was an error parsing the file" or photoshop freezes totally.
As far as I can see the images aren't corrupted becasue I'm able to view them with Bridge. I have never encounter this problem with my equipment before upgrading.
    Does anyone have a solution?
    Cheers in advance.

If an image has issues each time you try to open it in Camera RAW, then post a link so others can verify if it is indeed corrupted.
If you need to upload to www.YouSendIt.com or www.DropBox.com and then post the download link.

  • CS5 Error message - file-format module cannot parse the file - files made in CS5

I am a professional photographer who has used Photoshop since version 3 - I've not come across this problem - these are a set off wedding photos I've just taken and edited, retouched etc - help please ASAP

These are .tiff files made directly from my RAW image files via ACR then opened and worked on in CS5 before being saved as tiffs - some have previously been opened to watermark them for my FB page but now won't -  there are 18 out of 183 images so far that won't open in CS5, Illustrator, or Perfect Photosuite 8 whilst NX2 crashes immediately I try to use it to open them.  There is nothing different about the way these files have been produced and as I have several thousand more to work on yet [2 weddings] I should like to find out what is going wrong. The only recourse I can see is to go back to my Neffs and start again - needless to say this is worrying - it takes long enough to get the images perfect without having to keep repeating the work.

  • Photostop CS4 Error- "file-format module cannot parse file"

Photoshop was running fine for me yesterday. I cleaned my computer this morning with CCleaner and now it won't work. Help?

Good luck with the Registry restore. Of all the Registry cleaners, CCleaner seems to be one of the best, and one that does not do damage, when used. Still, with any Registry cleaner, there is always a bit of a risk, even with ones like CCleaner. I always do the backup, even for the most minor cleanings. I have to say that over the years, it has never messed up any of my Adobe programs.
Again, if things still do not work correctly, there is the Repair Installation, that is relatively quick, and has worked perfectly for me. If it gets down to that, someone here will be glad to step you through the process. It's not hard, but takes a few moment as the installer takes time to basically survey your system and the Adobe installations (for that program, or for a suite) twice. The fist is to catalog your installations, and when you choose, say PS (if you have a suite), it'll then survey that particular installation. If it finds anything missing, or corrupted, it'll fix that. I had to do the complete CS2 Production Studio once, and it was about 30 mins. total for all apps. that got "smurfed" by the installation of Premiere Elements. Obviously, Adobe did not think that anyone might have the full Production Studio, and later add PrE 4. At least they had a KB Article on what needed to be done - Repair Installation.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • "Could not complete because the file-format module cannot parse the file." How i solve this?

    The file is in .png

And what exactly? What PNG? From where? What system? What version of PS? You need to be much more specific.
