File Icon Appearance

To get a file icon to appear properly on the desk top, I selected that file and
went to "Get Info" in the File menu and under "open with" I selected the
appropriate application name (e.g., microsoft word) and also selected "change all".
Now all those files on the desktop have the distinctive look of their respective
application.
But those within a folder do not. As I pull an icon from the desktop into a folder
it loses it's distinctive appearance. What gives? What does pulling an icon within
a folder have to do with its appearance? How can I alter this?

For each folder with that issue, open the folder, then press Command-J (Show View Options in View menu). In the View Options window, checkmark the item "Show Item Preview".
If you have several such folders, note that the View Options window is a 'live' window. You can leave it open, close one folder and open another, and the View Options window will reflect the settings for the newly-opened folder.
You can also checkmark that item, then click the "Use as Defaults" button at the bottom of the screen. Note that this will not fix folders that already exist, but will affect any new folders you may create.

• Question mark on "file icon" appears on startup screen

I need some help, when I turn on my iMac 9 out of 10 times it makes a "clicking" noise and then a "file icon" with a question mark on it appears, it doesn't start. Some times it starts just fine, please let me know if there's a solution. Thanks in advance...

Welcome to Apple Discussions
First do you have and iPod or external HD connect, if so disconnect them and restart to see if that helps.
If not use the article in link below to help you repair your startup volume from the Install Disk 1 that came with your iMac.

• Froze and now just a file icon appears on start up

...and now using a back-up hard drive to restore Lion but when it searches for disks to install the rrestore on it can't locate the desktop hard drive. Is it toast???

Start your machine while holding both the Cmd and R keys down. This should boot your machine from the recovery partition of the hard drive.
From the recovery partition, you can access Disk Utility etc to try and repair your drive, recover Lion from a back up or install a fresh copy of Lion.
Hope this helps

• File icons missing/slow to load in Finder

I've noticed this on both of my Macs running 10.10.2. Quite frequently, the usual icons next to files are initially missing and sometimes will eventually load.
This is true for zip files, mp3 files, and application files specific to a certain app but the issues seems random and not related to any specific file types.
Does anybody know of a fix so that the icons are immediately visible as they have been in every previous version of OS X? I'll attach an image where you can see only one .zip file icon appears, and a bunch are missing as well as a .jpg icon

• Desktop icons appear as generic PS icons

I recently installed PSE 6.0 for Mac. Am running it on two machines, one using 10.4.11, the other running Leopard. This problem occurs on both machines. When I create a new image and save the file as a jpg, the file icon appears on the desktop as a generic PS jpg icon, rather than a mini of the image. I cannot find any option or preference that allows me to have file icons replicate the image. I did not have this problem in previous versions of PSE (2, 3).

You need to ask in the Elements forum as you have taken a wrong turn and ended up in the Photoshop forum.

• File Icons Not Appearing in Finder

Over the years I have archived projects on CDs and DVDs. I have always worked on Macs. No PC involvement. I have been doing this since 1987. Over the past couple weeks I have noticed that the icons of files (not folders) on my older disks are not appearing. I am using the latest Mac OS 10.8.3 on a MacBook Pro. However, on a friend's older Mac Pro tower (Intel), running an older OS (10.6.8), the file icons do appear. Also, it seems that all folder icons do appear on both systems. I have searched the Internet for an answer. I have a lot of old files that I currently cannot seem to access because of this issue. Can anyone shed any light on this? I think it may be an OS issue.

Hi,
I was under the impression that the Disk Level info was the bit that had the problem.
I am not sure why I ended up with that thought as you clearly state it is contents type info such as tiffs and the like you cannot "see" for long.
The Site did help with that.
I dug out a old Mag CD with a game on in.
I do not suffer losing sight of any of the files no matter which view I adopt.
It lists the Mac OS Standard as the format and the Roman encoding your Video and pics show.
(Strangely it says it was Modified and the date is before the listed Modified dates of the files and folder it contains).
I don't have any self created disks from that time to test.
I am at a loss myself now.
Sometimes, as in my Pic, the Applications that were written for OS 9 (Classic era) and earlier have the no entry sign over them.
Other times the items will show a generic file icon as it has "lost" which app it belongs to. (Which the PRAM reset deals with)
Your files clearly show the icons of the apps that would normally open them.
Files or folders that are normally hidden don't get counted in Quick Look or other forms of veiwing the contents, such as the lower bar in my pic.
It would appear the OS is reading the Disk properly but then deciding that it is not going to display all of it.
I tried viewing the files on my drive if different views - iCon and Cover Flow for certain - but did not notice any difference in what was presented.
If you have the Disk Open and in the Finder > View Menu > Show View Options and then choose Show Icon Preview do you get to see the tiff files at all ?
I would also try the Size change in the Cover Flow view just to see if it is something about the icon data that is "missing" or being mis-read.
I am clutching at straws at this point.

• Raw files (.nef) appear as generic icons - unable to view content

I have followed the instructions from the Adobe article "Raw files appear as generic icons?" posted at the Bridge forum start page, but my raw fils (.nef) are still appearing as generic icons.
I am using Bridge CS4 that came with PSE 8, Snow Leopard (10.6.2).
According to the article solution/point 3, if the currently installed version of the Camera Raw plug-in is earlier than 5.6 (as displayed in the title bar of the Camera Raw Preferences dialog (which is opened in Bridge CS4)), then proceed to download the 5.6 plug-in and follow the instructions to upgrade it.
My version displayed in the Camera Raw Preferences dialog is 5.0.0.178, so I proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after that, the Camera Raw Preference dialog that I opened from Bridge CS4 still says version 5.0.0.178, and my raw files still appear as generic icons.
I do notice that the Camera Raw opened in PSE 8 has been upgraded to 5.6 (from 5.5) after that, but the Camera Raw Preference dialog still says 5.0.0.178).
Help in how I can view my raw (.nef) files in Bridge CS4 would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your prmpt input Omke.

Double check the instructions, you should have only one version of ACR
installed in the correct location in the root level (not user account!)
Yes, I replace the old camera raw plug-in at the root level (Macintosh HD), and I checked that there is only 1 Camera raw plug-in in:
Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/Plug-Ins/FileFormats
after following the instructions.
Also check if you downloaded the verson for PSE and not for PS itself.
Reread the instructions carefully and also try to purge cache for folder
using the tools menu / cache / purge cache for folder.
Yes, I did download the version for PSE, not PS. I've also tried purge cache for folder by following your instructions, with no success.
Another thing I discovered is that when I open the Camera raw preference dialogue from PSE 8 (after clicking on a raw (.nef) file), the version number on the title bar is 5.6.0.148, but when I open the Camera raw preference dialog from Bridge CS4, it remains as 5.0.0.178, so maybe that has something to do with whey I can't view my raw (.nef) files from Bridge (and have no problems with PSE 8)?
Any further insights would be appreciated!
My version displayed in the Camera Raw Preferences dialog is 5.0.0.178, so I
proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after
that, the Camera Raw Preference dialog that I opened from Bridge CS4 still
says version 5.0.0.178, and my raw files still appear as generic icons.
I do notice that the Camera Raw opened in PSE 8 has been upgraded to 5.6 (from
5.5) after that, but the Camera Raw Preference dialog still says 5.0.0.178).
Help in how I can view my raw (.nef) files in Bridge CS4 would be appreciated.

• Why do all the unused icons appear in a box on the navigation bar after I download a file?

Since the last Firefox upgrade last week a large box of all the unused icons appears on the navigation bar after I download a file. If I click on this box, the previous download information appears. The icons in the box aren't useable. This box doesn't appear when I first open Firefox. The box is so big it crowds out the other items in the navigation bar. Any ideas?

This issue is caused by a broken extension that isn't working properly and that doesn't support the current Firefox release.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• When I power on a file icon with a ? Appears

Why does this file icon show up when I power on and does not let me do anything else

Because the computer can't find an OS to boot from. If it eventually starts up, check the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences. If not, you need to repair the hard disk or install a new OS on it.

• Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"? Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct? Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC? Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers. See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary. (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder. (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive. (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive). When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

• How do I remove "All My Files" icons from the toolbar?

Good Afternoon:
I have A shiny new 15" MBPro that came preinstalled with Lion that I have updated to 10.7.1.
If I open a finder window, there are two "All My Files" icons on either side of the toolbar. I asked a Genius about it and they said they had never seen that. I can remove "All My Files" from the list of Favorites on the left easily enough. I can open up the window to customize the ToolBar, but in that window there are no "All My Files" icons available to add or delete.
How do I remove the "All My Files" icons from the toolbar?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Below is a screenshot of the problem.

Sort of surprised they didn't know. I'm lost as to why that even appeared on your computer unless you had put them there yourself which, clearly, you didn't if it was brand new out of the box.
Glad it's sorted out.
