File Icons and types mysteriously changing

I'm running a MacMini as a server for a small office. There are only three clients attached so I use personal filesharing. All files are shared on an external drive using Sharepoints. It's been working just fine until recently. Many files (hundreds) are suddenly showing up as generic, UNIX exe files. It's not just new files, too. Old files are appearing the same way. I've repaired permissions, made sure that I had the latest version of Sharepoints, repaired the external drive and ran "Cache Out X". Am I missing something? Is this a known issue and, if so, what caused the sudden change? It would be an unthinkable amount of work to search for and change all the files manually.
The mini is running OSX 10.4.6.

I figured out what was going on. Somehow (is there a key command that could do this?), I had activated the "Show Icon Preview" option that can be checked or unchecked in the dialog that appears when selecting the View | Show View Options from the Finder menu bar. I unchecked the "Show Icon Preview" checkbox, and the icons reverted to what I wanted. I have no idea how this got enabled, as I'm positive that I didn't set it from the Finder menu.

Are you searching for a file that you downloaded via Firefox?
If that is the case then you can check the Download Manager (Tools > Downloads) and if that file is listed there then right click that entry and choose > Open Containing Folder. If that entry is grayed then the file is no longer in the original download location and possibly removed by AV software.

The Downloads folder's icon had changed to an file icon ,and cannot be opened.

Missing APPLICATIONS & FILE Icons and can't find my themes

Please help. I have a 3rd party application that I downloaded as required to my computer & now I need to transfer 5 files (JAR & TAR) files to my phone. It says to follow the path: files/media card/ Blackberry/new_phones.In the instructions it says to go to "Applications" icon and click, then "file" icon and click which will bring up ALL files, then click on "File Folders" then Media Card, then Blackberry then press new_phones, then click new phones again and I should see the files I need to set permissions on. I do not find a APPLICATION OR FILE ICON. I can go to Options, then advanced options and then applications but when I get there nothing says FILE. I have already put everything back to factory settings thinking maybe they were deleted at some point but there is still NO icons for these. I really do need some help installing these files to my phone. I dont mind if someone wants to remote into my computer to help me even. And since I reset everything to factory settings, I can't get to ABOUT to find out what OS that I am using or when I went to set a new theme that I just downloaded it only has one BB theme (BB Dimension Zen), the new one I just downloaded isn't even showing up. PLEASE help me fix my mess up and install the files to the phone. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you essentially have a new computer and unless you restored from a backup your iTunes library would be empty. You can transfer your iTunes purchases from your iPod to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
SInce you changed syncing computers. after you move the stuff you need to restore the iPod to factory defaults and sync the stuff back to your iPod. If you had the iPod backup file you could restore from backup.
If you have non-iTunes pruchases you can copy them to your computer by using one of the third-party programs discussed in this previous discussion:

Options to view file size and type?

Where can I turn on options on an image and get the file size and type?

You can see the file type by hovering over the file in Library view and it will show the file name followed by the extension like jpg, nef or tiff.
Alternatively in library mode go to grid view it will pixel size of the files as well as the name of the file withthe format.
If you are not able to see that go to View>View Option.
Check the option show header with label

If you install those new OS X versions over the top of what you already have, your files and preferences should remain. However, it's a very good idea to have at least one complete backup of your Mac's disk before you try anything like that.

White screen with file icon and Question mark after a kernel panic???

I'm using my girlfriends 20" iMac and her computer keeps having kernel panics. And then at times when we restart the computer, we get a white screen with a file icon and a question mark inside. Any ideas on what to do???? Her graduation project is on that computer and she is stressed like you wouldn't believe. Safe to say, I'm taking the brunt of it. Please help!!!

It sounds like you might be having a hard drive problem. The folder icon with question mark means the computer can't find a startup drive/system folder. I suggest that you back up all important data, especially her project. Before bringing it in for service, run the Apple Hardware Test - put in your original system restore DVD and restart the computer, holdng down the "D" key. Run the extended diagnositics (it will take over an hour (depending on how much RAM you have) and will tell you if there is anything wrong with your hardware. If it dinds a problem then you can take it to the nearest Apple authorized service provider to check it out.

How do I set an icon and type for my own extension?

Hello everybody
I would like to be able to give a particular icon to a file type that my program will generate and set it to always open in a particular program.
For instance, my program might generate a settings file called myProgram.prefs - so I'd like all .prefs files to have a particular icon and to open up in notepad when double clicked.
Looking on the various forums I guess I should be able to do this with just a few lines of code but I can't work it out! Can anyone help please?

File icons and app icons hidden?

Hi, ever since I ugraded to Mavericks, some of my apps and file icons disappear, but the title still shows up

Has anyone else had this happen since upgrading to Mavericks? Anyone know a solution?

may I know your security software status?
did you try to scan your PC before?
please repeat create new admin account, clean boot and sfc once again to make sure there is no issue related to user profile issue, 3rd party software issue and registry issue
if not working i suggest you to perform system restore, back to condition when this PC working fine
and if still persist after system restore, since this issue intermittent, I suggest perform in place upgrade

No file icons and Explorer freeze

Using Windows 8.1 x64. Here is what happened to my computer,
File explorer does not show associated file icons sometimes. For instance: I have an shortcut of Downloads on desktop. Sometimes it shows blank white icon sometimes downloads icon.
When I open My computer, control panel etc., (again sometimes) it says searching and never shows hard drives or control panel items. When I relaunch explorer, it's okey but randomly happens again. Also explorer does not respond randomly.
If I try to open Settings on the Charm bar, full screen settings icon appears and freezes. Alt-tab, ctrl-shift-esc etc does not work, I have to restart computer.
Tried;
- Delete IconCache.db
- Clean Boot (Disabling all services and startup items except windows services)
- sfc /scannow -> found nothing
++ I forgot, in safe mode, everything is ok.

is there any changes before this issue happen?

Lost all application and file icons and more

Today i discovered that for some reason i could not drag files around on the desktop or moving them between folders. I used restarted the mac - nothing changed. I used OnyX to run all the maintenance tasks, repair prefs, clean caches, optimize system, etc... Onyx asked for system restart - which i did and now i have more problems than before.
after restart all the files on my desktop lost the application associations (ie icon changed from PDF icon to blank paper with folded corner). I opened the Applications folder to find that all the applications lost their correct icons and are now represented by a blue folder - all native osx applications, mail, safari, etc... as well as third-party apps. the only one that kept its icon correctly was Adobe Acrobat 7.0.
Dock lost all it's correct application icons and now just show folders and some gray question marks. Finder and Trash bin still have correct icons. Everything else is wrong. Question marked apps won;t open from dock... (these are mail, safari, and sherlock)
If i click on an application from applications folder (safari for example) it opens fine and does what it is supposed to do. Most other apps seem to still function.
Also stil have problem that files still could not be dragged around or moved around in Finder.
I'm running 10.2.8 on a G4 1.25dp tower that has been very stable for a long time. I have no idea what happened or how to fix.

Nano scollling through files icon and apple icon, won't restore

Help, this is troubling.
When plugged into the computer my nano scolls though three screens: apple, file icon with exclamation point and then www.apple.com/suuport/ipod and then flickers back and starts over. The sceen seems quite dim also. And I can't get it to reset, restore or to go into disk mode when plugged into the computer.
If I plug it into the wall it just goes to the icon file and the web site view. Then I can get it into disc mode (no other modes though) but when I unplug it from the wall to plug it into the computer it seems to fade a little bit and as soon as I get it plugged into the computer it starts its three page cycle again. So the computer won't recognize it and it won't stop cycling. It is only a few months old so I don't see how it could be the battery.
Any ideas at all??

Hi Tom, thank you for responding. I have had the same problem using 2 computers, one is an HP Compaq nx8220 laptop running Windows XP Professional Version 5.1, the other one is a LG Tablet also running XP Professional. I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes on both. The problem originally happened when I was updating the iPod on the LG, I left it charging and when I returned a few hours later the iPod didn't work. I then went through the 5 stepts as per the web site which resulted in the iPod needing to be restored. I hope this helps.
