File icons missing/slow to load in Finder

I've noticed this on both of my Macs running 10.10.2. Quite frequently, the usual icons next to files are initially missing and sometimes will eventually load.
This is true for zip files, mp3 files, and application files specific to a certain app but the issues seems random and not related to any specific file types.
Does anybody know of a fix so that the icons are immediately visible as they have been in every previous version of OS X? I'll attach an image where you can see only one .zip file icon appears, and a bunch are missing as well as a .jpg icon

bump?

  • My file icons are not updating refreshing in finder

I've just upgraded to Lion. Not that impressed all round to be fair. Anyway, one thing that is really niggling me is tha fact that I create a file in Photoshop, change the visual content, and the icon is not refreshing in the finder. The term I would tend to use is 'crap'.

I can confirm that the solution posted by crockej does indeed work, I am not by any means saying that it is a perfect solution, and am sure that it is not the actual fix, but it does work, I landed up having to add JPG,GIF,PNG,PDF,SWF,FLA,ICO,SWZ,MPR,PSD,XLSX,INDD,AI all to fy file list and although this was 90% of the missing icons fixed, it still requires more like m4v etc.
Think of this as more of a temporary solution to the problem, but it does work.
This is what my /Users/XXXXX/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS5.5/en_US/Configuration/Extensions.txt file looks like now.

  • Illustrator File Icon missing in Vista Business? !

    Hello,
Under WinXP, the AI file type would display an orange flower icon for Illustrator files. Under Windows Vista Ultimate, the AI file icon is only a white page...
Any idea why? Can this be changed?
    Thanks,
    Luke

After months with the same problem, I just found a way that worked for me. I hope it is useful for other people having the same headache.
    1. I downloaded this program: http://defaultprogramseditor.com/ (it doesn't need to be installed, and I checked it before I clicked on it, at Virus Total (http://www.virustotal.com/).
    2. The problem I found in my case, is that both .eps and .ai were just "Illustrator Files". So I deleted both file types with "Default Programs Editor", like this:
         a. Click "File Type Settings".
         b. Click "Delete an extension".
         c. In "Search", type "ai", select it and delete it.
         d. Do the same with the "eps" extension and close the Programs Editor.
    3. Open Illustrator, and the guy will cry that the Windows Registry need to be repaired; say yes (if you want, you can create a new -blank- .ai and/or a new -blank- .eps, and save them both anywhere, only to see later how they will -finally- look to the way they should usually look. ;-))
    4. Open the program "Default Programs Editor" again and follow these steps to change to the beautiful, impossible, secrets, wonderful icons you should see instead that horrible white sheet:
         a. Click "File Type Settings".
         b. Click "Icon".
         c. In "Search", type "ai", select it and click "Next".
         d. If some s**t about AIRegtool comes, just ignore it, say OK or whatever lets you to click "Browse" in order to look for the right icon inside the Illustrator (.exe) file.
It might be different in your case, but in mine (Windows Vista Home Premium, CS4) the route was: C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4/Support Files/Contents/Windows/Illustrator.exe and click "Open".
         e. Now -finally- you can find the most wanted icons in the world. Choose the right icon (of course you will know which one it is, since you're really missing it), click "Ok", and click "Save Icon" (or you can open the menu and choose "Save to Registry" -what I did- or "Save to .reg file".
         f. Repeat the same for the rest of the icons/file types that you were missing.
P.S.: Excuse me if my English is not perfect. ;-)) Feel free to copy and post this in other forums, I know there have been thousands of people looking for a solution to this thing.
Greetings! and enjoy your icons again!! -finally.

  • File icons missing in File Panel

Hi there, I have a brand new installation (demo) of Dreamweaver CS6 on a Mac and in the file panel the icons for files are not there. The icons for folders are there but where there should be an icon for a file there is empty white space. This is frustrating because it makes it harder to view the file list and work with the files.
I tried to uninstall Dreamweaver, removed the preference files and reinstall but that did nothing at all.
How can I get the file icons to show?

This is a known issue related to OSX and should be fixed with the 10.7.4 update.

  • File icons missing

    Hi everyone -
I'm using File.icon to render filesystem icons in an
ItemRenderer - this works fine, except for when the file does not
have an associated icon - for such files Windows Explorer will
normally use an icon from shell32.dll or similar, but this icon
doesn't seem to be what AIR receives from the system, instead it
gets blank BitmapData, where all pixel values are 0. Examples are
.TMP, .EXE or any file-type where there's no strict association
with a program. Any idea why this happens and whether there's a
workaround, other than testing for blank pixels and replacing with
    my own icon?

Yes I have seen this same issue. Exes and other extensions,
    don't have an associated icon.

  • Shared folders slow to load in Finder

Been having this issue on multiple Macs in our office here. Many of us share folders on our machines for others to access on our network regularly. When the local user tries to open one of these shared folders, it will take considerably longer than others to load and show files. Example: Opening a non-shared folder will load and display nearly instantaneously. A shared folder will cause Finder to hang for 15-30 seconds before showing the contents. Once open, it will respond normally, but entering any subfolders will cause the same slow down.
We've tried repairing permissions multiple times with no improvements. The only solution seems to be to turn off sharing for these folders, which is not ideal. Any ideas?

I'm having similar issues, but with almost all previews. It's made using the finder almost impossible lately. It seems to work just snappy if I change the view to icon or list before I click on an files, but I really got used to working in the column view. I'm searching the forums now for more info.

  • ADOBE CC FILE ICONS MISSING

Not sure what happened, but all of my adobe icons are missing (show as a white icon, or a white icon with the icon its supposed to be in the middle of it). A few days ago they were all showing up.
    How can I fix this?
I've tried assigning the correct programs via associating the file type protocol.
    Windows 7 64bit...
    Thank you.

Did you ever figure this out?  So annoying. I never realized how much I used the icons to find files until they are gone!

I've just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.4.6 and I'm having a bothersome issue with the preview images in Finder loading very slowly. This is most noticable with large high res Photoshop files. Why is this happening and is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
I just discovered this little annoyance... I thought I'd seen the last of it under a prior version of iTunes, but it may have come back.
iTunes video files (.m4v container files) have suddenly defaulted to a plain white icon in the Finder - desktop, folders, etc. - upon updating to iTunes 10.6.3.  The generic blue "notes" icon with "M4V" has disappeared, and will not reappear upon attempting to clear out the icon during a Get Info.
Strangely, if "Show icon preview" is checked under Finder's View Options, it will display any associated album art with the .m4v file correctly - it just so happens that something occurred with the default icons.
I rebuilt the Launch Services just in case, and these files by default still open with iTunes as per usual.  Checked for corrupt .plist files (even trashed com.apple.finder.plist) and cleared some caches out, ran maintenance scripts, etc. to cover any possible loose ends, but this issue is still present.
I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 (long time SL holdout) but everything was normal under iTunes 10.6.2 - so I cannot determine whether this is a Lion issue or an iTunes issue.  I am going to post this in the iTunes forum as well, but has anyone else noticed this recently?  If so, what did you do to fix this?
    Thanks all,
    Steve

That's the point to where I was getting - without icon previews, the default icon for .m4v files should be the following:
(This was just taken from my wife's MacBook Pro, still on iTunes 10.6.2 but running Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Under Lion (10.7.4) and iTunes 10.6.3, the default icon (no previews) is empty white, which I do not believe should be - I had the above generic icon for .m4v files in Lion under 10.6.2.
Yet iTunes-associated audio files are fine: (from my iMac)
    Strange, isn't it??

  • File icon invisible.  How can I find it?

I have two files on my Intel iMac.  I know they are there but the icons do not appear for some reason.  How can I fix this?  Thanks.

If you know their names use Spotlight or any other search utility (e.g., Find any File) to find them.  If you know the files on some other basis, e.g., mod date, you could try using spotlight (or FAF) to search on that basis.  Type command+f in finder to bring up that sportlight find facility.  This will also allow searching for invisible files.

  • Music Files are Missing- 50%-ITunes can't find Folder?

50% of my music files have an exclamation and will only work if I do a search in Vista, locate the file :C:\Users\jorge'\Desktop\Desk Top Files 8-10-09\Velocity PC\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\My eMusic\Neal Casal\Leaving Traces Songs 1994-2004
If they are in the iTunes folder, why can't iTunes find them?

That's not the normal path for the itunes folder!
It's on your desktop, where it shouldn't be.
The default path on Vista is
    C:\Users\ your username \Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\

  • Slow, generally slow to Load, most any software

Don't get me wrong, I love the iMAC and am glad to have made the change, what, three years ago, but I must say that I am feeling like I just do not know how to run this computer. Everything seems slow to load, even finder, at the speed of a steam engine. Excel - 20 seconds, Word - sometimes longer, even Finder takes 5 to 10 seconds to load and don't get me started on Adobe products - is that just the way it is with the iMAC - slow? what can I do?

First, would you please provide more specific information in your profile, such as exact model, and the OS version (are you really on 10.5.1???).
If you're on 10.5.1, you should update to the most current: 10.5.8 - BUT, not until we figure out why yours is so slow.
How large is your hard drive and how much space is still available (free)? The OS needs a minimum of 10 - 15% free at all times to operate properly, so your hard drive may be getting too full. In that case, move some space hogging files such as videos, pics, etc. to an external hard drive.
How much RAM do you have?
Check Activity Monitor (Applications -> Utilities) and report the stats under memory: free, used, page ins/page outs. Not enough RAM will result in too much swapping which may result in slow downs.
Do you regularly empty browser caches, history, etc? If not, do so please.
Do you run Repair Permissions after installing any software and/or updates? Go to Disk Utility in Applications -> Utilities and run it.
After checking and doing that, please report back.

  • Flip4Mac Beta, Slow WMV load time?

Just wondering if anyone else who is using Flip4Mac Beta Universal is experiencing slow load time when loading a WMV movie file. I loaded a 1920x1200 606MB video file and that might be why. Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing slow WMV load time.

Like you I've noticed that when working with larger media files it'll slow down loading and other aspects. Especially moving through said files by fast forward/reverse.
I wouldn't exactly call it too bad though. QT native files get slowed down the larger they are too.
    Don't forget it's still a Beta.
