File Importing Renaming Options

In the file import and renaming section, I'd like some more flexibilty when renaming my files on import. Currently, I have to use third party software to do this, but I'd like to have Lightroom to be able to tell the folder number (from the camera-created folder on my CF card) and use that as a prefix. Instead of IMG0987.CR2, I'd like it to rename the file 201-0987.CR2. I know I could type the prefix manually, but  there's a risk of renaming incorrectly when I cross from IMG9999 to IMG0001 and go from folder 202 to 203, for example. Can a Lightroom import query for that piece of data?

It is not the source being a card or not, it is the type of Import being an Add (in place) that prevents renaming and a destination since Add implies that the files are already where you want them and named what you want them to be named.
If your files are indeed where you want them just import them in place and do a rename afterwards.  If they are on the hard-drive but in a temporary location then do a Copy or Move to put them where you want them, or is this what you’re trying and it’s not working?

  • Serious File Import / Renaming Problem for Professional Photographer

I'm a professional photographer who imports thousands of photos from several CF cards from several photographers using several different brands of cameras. I recently came across the following problem.
CASE #1: If you import a CR2 and a NEF file into the same directory, both with the same capture time, in two different import processes, and rename them at the time of import to the capture time of HHMMSS, then you end up with two files in the same directory with the same filename and different extensions. This is a big problem. It's common to have two photographers shooting with two different camera brands at big events. When this renaming issue happens, and those filenames remain the same, only a single XMP file is ever written. Additionally, only a single JPG can be generated from the RAW file; one will overwrite the other.
CASE #2: If you import a CR2 and a NEF file into the same directory, both with the same capture time, in a single import process from a local drive, and set the import to rename the files at the time of import to the capture time of HHMMSS, then you end up with an error message that states that neither file can be renamed. I haven't hit this in my environment but I uncovered it in my testing for this issue.
CASE #3: If you rename a CR2 and a NEF file in the same directory, both with the same capture time but with different file names, and set the Library > Rename Photos... process to use the capture time of HHMMSS, then the files will be renamed properly, except one of the files will automatically have a “-1” appended to it (prior to the differing extension). This is the way I think it should work for both CASE #1 and CASE #2.
I only just now discovered this problem. I'm not sure it was present on previous releases but if so, I'm scared to think of how many files were never exported as JPGs to my customers. In the last event that I processed, I discovered 20 photos (40 files) that were shown to exhibit this problem.
How do I get this addressed by Adobe? I don't want to use the Rename function after every muliple card import just to work around this problem!

It sure does feel like you're trolling here. Given the fact  that I successfully manage over 100,000 client images annually and I've been  successfully following this naming convention for the last six years, I  think I know a little bit about how I need to go about manaing my own  files. File naming is key component of my DAM and my office automation.  Until you've walked in my shoes for a few years, you can't speak to the  best way to run my business or my file management. Well, you can, but  you'd probably be wrong.
My comments were definitely not "trolling", unless you mean I had a hook in the water looking for a bite. In which case: success!
You may have all the reason in the world to think your way is the best, but the more you explain it, the less I am convinced. Even pros have to reconsider less ideal workflows. In fact, it is often pros that insist on sticking to old busted workflows that were crafted around earlier, less capable tools.
And, yes, depending primarily on a filename created at import (before you have even looked at the images) for the core of your DAM workflow is, well, not DAM. Your blunt, and yet strangely constricted, file-naming pattern is obviously not really helping you, and yet your first response is to blame the tool. There is a famous platitude in there somewhere.
There is a lot of good advice else-thread. You should at least heed some of it. Because the /combined/ experience here will always exceed personal experience.
You have been given a lot of good workarounds for your situation, and gentle advice to consider how image metadata can be used post-import in a more nuanced manner, as well as a place to raise a feature request.
It isn't trolling to point out that none of this seems to satisfy you, and it appears to be because some folks are not immediately agreeing whole-heartedly with you.  But you are welcome to take what you want, if anything, from my comments.

  • Can't find Library when using Import Mailboxes option in Mountain Lion

Hi there, I'm trying to import my Mailboxes I've created on my iMac in my Apple Mail, but I can't see the "Library" folder. I've searched the web and found instructions to unhide the "Library" folder when using Finder, but this does not help me as I can't use this when following the instructions and prompts in the Mail>File>Import Mailboxes option. I'm running Mountain Lion. Can anyone help?

Sorry that option not available in mountain lion.
You can use a terminal command but the easiest way to do this is to choose Go>Go To Folder ~/Library.
When it opens drag the Folder from the window bar into your side bar.
This will make it always available.
To remove it just drag out of the side bar.

All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.
That has been true for the previous Aperture versions. Now Aperture simply treats the original image files exactly as they are in the imported library. Referenced images will stay referenced, managed will be imported as managed. But you can always relocate the imported managed images afterwards by using "File > Relocate".

  • Can we mix mandatory and optional field entries for file import?

Can we have devices with mandatory fields only and some other devices with mandatory and optional fields within the same CSV file used for file import?

    Hi Rita and Sandra,
That is correct, you can mix mandatory and optional field entries for file import. However, if you don’t have OS type and version, the alerts matching would be impacted.

  • File name renamed from Skydrive import

When I Open in a PDF in Skydrive, the resulting PDF in Adobe Reader (iPhone) has its file name renamed to File_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. How do I prevent this from happening?

I think this is an issue with the SkyDrive app not Adobe Reader as I have found it happens when you open SkyDrive docs in other apps like ibooks too. Don't know how to fix it I am afraid. A few others have also noticed this. See this Microsoft forum:

  • Fixing sesx files after included wav files were renamed?

In a fit of year-end house-keeping, I embarked on a renaming campaign of hordes of classical concert recordings:  from their original naming convention "ABCddmmyyyy.wav" to the format "ABCyyyymmdd.wav", which I find more helpful for search purposes.
It was an easy fix to do a bulk rename of all the file folders and their accumulation of wav, pk, pkf, cdl, flac, mp3 and cue files (remembering to adjust the filenames referenced inside the cue's), but I'm struggling on how to tidy up and retain valid sesx files (with AA CS6). Typically such a session file may have several long, simultaneous, parallel stereo tracks, e.g.: "ABCddmmyyyy.ORTF.wav", "ABCddmmyyyy.AB.wav", "ABCddmmyyyy_XY-soloists.wav" etc , to which convoluted volume envelopes had been painstakingly applied. How best can I update the sesx to reflect the renaming? .I'm not keen on having to re-import the renamed files and lose the volume envelopes?...or is it possible to copy volume envelopes from an old track to a fresh track?  Thanks.

Thanks, ryclark, that did the trick perfectly!
I had noticed that there actually was a 'rename' option from within the AA CS6 program, but it was unclear exactly what changes would then be getting made...and whether the absolute file paths would be respected.

  • Upon creating a new catalog, all files are renamed with a postfix: "-2"?

My catalog was corrupted, and i decided to create a new catalog from cratch.
To my big surprise alle falenames was renamed from IMG_xxxx.cr2 to IMG_xxxx-2.cr2. Why?
This is i problem sice i still god the old catalog, and try to recover some of the old editorial settings, but since alle files are renamed the are no longer visible in the old catalog. just about 15.000 files are renamed!

Lightroom only adds suffixes when it finds files of the same name in a location it's moving or copying too.
What option did you use on Import? Copy/Add/Move?

  • EO11 File Import Order

In Elements Organizer 11, when I "Import from Camera or Card Reader" and have it rename files, adding a number to a Custom Name, it imports the newest file first, adding the lowest number to the newest file in the camera (in this case an iPhone) and the largest number to the oldest file. Is there a way to make EO11 import files oldest first from a camera, adding the numbers in order from oldest to newest?

Just like you, I have not been able to get a correct order sequence from the downloader in PSE11.
    My advice would be to import without renaming ;
then select all the import batch and use the 'rename' option from the file menu. Works well for me.

  • CS5.5 hangs on file import

I have been using PP for several versions and have never experienced any major issues until now.  At some point in the last few weeks (cannot link it to a recent PP update, but that may be the case) I have started having extreme problems when importing files.  It started on my laptop, then I experienced the same problem on my desktop.
I nearly always import .mov files and have had no problems in the past.  Now PP hangs randomly on file import.  It seems to work more often than not if I import one file at a time, but even then it may stop randomly on a file.  If I restart it may successfully import the file it stopped on, or it may crash again.  It is impossible to import a large batch of files at once, so working on a large project is now almost impossible.  I cannot see anything in this forum that relates to it.  I am running Windows 7 an PP version 5.5.0.  In addition my laptop version randomly shows 'pending' against different files - this changes to other files if I re-start.  If I try to re-link it can also cause a hang.
One other change in my workflow.  I have switched from a Canon 5D mark II to a mark III.  But I can read and edit the files succesfully and play them in other applications, just as with the mark II.  But even with the mark III I successfully imported my first batch of files about a month ago and had no problems whatsoever.
    Any ideas?

    Update
I have been researching this further.  There is a possibility that this is related to the new container format in the 5D mark III.  This camera now allows high or low compression .mov files to be created.  In the mark II they were all low compression.  The last batch that I created was high compression.  It is possible that PP is having trouble with these.  It still randomly rejects files and randomly reports some as being off-line, yet the next time I connect they are back on-line.  I created a batch of 10 with low compression and they loaded correctly, but have not tested this with a large batch of real files.  I am also checking with Canon to see what has changed.
If anyone has any further advice or experience I'd be grateful.  In the meantime it seems that the only way I can safely process these files is to run them all through the media encode and convert them to mp4 or something similar.
    Further update
I am gradually answering my own question here.  For anyone with a Canon 5D mark III you might be interested.
First batch of footage shot on 5D mk III set to 1080P high compression.  This caused PP and Media Encode (ME) to crash frequently.  Even footage already loaded came back with an off-line message randomly.
Test set of footage shot on 5D mk II worked perfectly in the same project.  There are no compression options on the mk II.
Could not convert original batch with ME so used MPEG Streamclip to convert the batch of 100+.  Conversion worked first time.  Import into PP worked perfectly.
Shot a test batch of 10 with the mk III in low compression and they all imported with no problems.
This points to an incompatibility between PP/ME and the new 5D mk III low compression format files.  I'll report this as a bug to Adobe.  I have already reported it to Canon.

  • PAR file import problem in NWDS

    Hello All,
Some time back we had developed a custome masthead component for our portal (EP 6, SP 21).
It has been deployed into the portal and its running fine.
now, we need to change some thing in that and so we have downloaded the par file and imported in nwds for code modification.
once we do that we get the masthead.jsp file but unable to get the class files and the beans.
what we doubt is while deploying the par the code was not deployed in the portal.
do you have any idea how can we get the code base out of that ?
p.s we dont have any other code base.
    Thanks
    Anirban

    Hi Anirban,
If you uncheck and deploy the PAR file, later you can download it from portal. But the source code will not be available i.e src.api and scr.core will not be available.
1.unzip the jar file in portalINF/lib.
    2. Run the java decompiler tool on each unzipped folder.
    3. create another folder and move .java files and rename it.
    Hope this might be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Subashini.

  • Music files getting renamed (why?), iTunes loses them

This has happened once every month or two since I started using iTunes on my laptop. I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it, but every now and then my music files get renamed. Not all of them, but, for example, this time every song on 24 albums out of about 100. It's always entire albums. When it has happened, I double-click on the song, I get the message saying the "original file could not be found", then I re-find it and it starts playing. When it starts playing, iTunes will usually rename it and/or move it to another folder. Sometimes the album ends up in the "unknown artists" folder, or in the "compilations" folder, but once I track it down (through iTunes "do you want to find it") it gets moved back where it belongs.
It was only this last time that I noticed that these lost files were not only getting moved, but they were getting renamed as well. When everything's working fine, my music has been moved and named like has been renamed by iTunes and looks like "C:\My Music\The Dresden Dolls\The Dresden Dolls\03 Missed Me.mp3". Some process in iTunes or in Windows is renaming only certain albums to look like "C:\My Music\Stephen Lynch\A Little Bit Special\10-Gerbil-Stephen Lynch-A Little Bit Special.mp3".
When the files get renamed like this, iTunes can't find them anymore until I go in and fix things, file by file. This takes forever. If not for the fact that I need to preserve my playlists and my play count numbers, I would just blast the whole library and reimport the folder, but I can't do that.
So, any one have any ideas why this happens, how to keep it from happening, and a way to fix things while preserving my metadata without having to double-click on a few hundred songs?
      Windows XP Pro

Actually, I found a good solution based on another question. If I re-import the folder, it finds all of those misnamed files and adds them to the library. Then I tell iTunes to keep my music folder organized, and it fixes all the file names and folders. Then after I make sure the original entries work again, I can sort the list by date added, and delete the new entries.
But I still have no idea why those albums are getting renamed. It's not just the most recent ones or the oldest ones, it's not ones that haven't been played, it's just random-seeming.

  • PHotoshop CS4 - scanner doesn't show up in File - Import

    Hello,
I have an Epson Perfection 4180 scanner, and Photoshop CS4 extended and a Mac OSX 10.6.3.  I installed photoshop but the scanner doesn't show up under the File>Import menu. Normally it be there, i'd click it, and it launches the scanner within photoshop.
I found some info on google which suggested to look in a  folder on the installation DVD called "Goodies"
In there is a folder called Optional "Plug-Ins"
In there is a folder called "Import-Export"Where i found a file called TWAIN.plugin
I put the file into Adobe Photoshop CS4/Plug-ins/Import-Export but it still doesn't appear in photoshop file > import.
Any ideas on what i should do?
    Many thanks
    Rossella

    Use the stand-alone application.
And/or do a Forum search for »CS4 scanner« – that should turn up a couple threads.

  • File/Import and Page Layout not working anymore

I have a question about old software: FrameMaker 6.0 on a Mac. (While Adobe encouraged me to purchase this in 2001 for the chemistry textbook I am writing, I had invested to much to abandon it when Adobe abandoned the Mac version a few years later.)
I have imported dozens of images files into the 750 page book and FrameMaker has accepted both tif and jpg formats. The way I did it was to create an anchored frame in the textbook, click on it, and then File>Import and select the image file and then choose whether I wanted it to be referenced or actually in the text.  All of this worked fine... until a couple of days ago.
    Problems
    1. I no longer get Import as an option under File and
    2. FrameMaker no longer recognizes tif and jpg files under "All Readable Documents"  when I do File>Open.  I have to click on Show All Files to see them.
As a result I am unable to import any tif or jpg files into the FrameMaker textbook.
What's curious is that I have 6.0 installed on both a G4 and a PowerBook and this problem has occurred on both at  the same time.
    3. And I just discovered that when I do Format/Page Layout the half a dozen or so custom formats that I had are no longer listed.
So what has caused this loss of memory for Framemaker that it can no longer do what it has done for me for years.  (I am somewhat sympathetic to it's memory loss myself as a 78 year old user.)
The G4 has been unplugged recently but in the past it has been unplugged for a week or so and there were no problems.

I don't know if read-only files are recognized by FrameMaker to the point where it will dim commands that need to write to the files.
It's always a good idea on Mac to repair permissions with Disk Utility - make sure you have good backups, just in case.
Have you tried saving a file that can't import as MIF, then opening the MIF version to restore the file, and perhaps lose any corruption in it? This is called the "MIF Wash."
I think the latest Mac OS that FrameMaker can work with is system 9, or the Classic simulator that runs on the OS X release called Tiger. I'm sure you'd know if you changed operating systems in this period. Classic won't run on Intel Macs.
I have no other clues about what might cause this, except the general thought that something has changed on your systems or in the files you're working with. Does the problem persist in a brand-new file you create on your local drive? If you're working with FM files on a network, have you tried the process with files on your local computer drive? Have you quit FrameMaker and restarted your Macs? Any change? If you have a cloned bootable backup of your stuff from before the problem arose, you might want to try cloning your problematic drive to a new bootable backup, then restoring the known good clone, to see if it works.
