File in Root Macintosh HD Visible?

I've done a search, but can't find anything. Is it just me, or are all the files in the Root Macintosh HD now visible, whereas in Tiger all the Unix files and directories were hidden?
Is this standard with Leopard, or is my install screwed up?

I'm pretty sure this is a bug and not a feature. They are showing for me too, but when I installed Leopard on my partner's computer they don't. And I think the for the vast majority of people they don't.

I just purchased a new Macbook pro and migrated my data using migration assistant. I have just noticed an unusual file in the Macintosh HD root directory called "~". It says it was created today but modified yesterday! Its 557kb in size. Does anyone have any clues what this could be for?

no, but you can safely delete it. could be a temp file created by some program that was not removed cleanly.

Files that used to be visible are now hidden in Mavericks 10.9.1. How can I change the setting to view the same files as before? I do not need the hidden files that are typically invisible.
I am having trouble locating such files as PDF's INDD, AI etc. When I view all hidden files and try to open it in the program..it looks like it is really not on the drive. Has anyone come across a solution?

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

..."Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."...
One reason this error can appear is if "repair permissions" is unable to read the permissions database at "/Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb" of the affected volume, due to incorrect permissions.
Yes, you read that correctly - "repair permissions", the procedure to correct incorrect permissions, can fail to work if permissions are incorrect. This is a ridiculous shortcoming of the new (in my opinion "beta"-quality) Leopard versions of "repair permissions" that goes out of its way to drop its privileges to a level that is insufficient to complete its job.
If you are able to manually adjust the permissions (eg. using 'chown', or 'chmod' -- I would recommend against using "Get Info" unless you are very careful since it also is "beta" quality in Leopard) of all of the folders along the path to the "a.receiptdb", and of the file itself, to ensure that the user '_installer' has at least "read" permissions, that should allow "repair permissions" to function...

  • LV project files view root directory

I want to understand the nature of the LabVIEW project files view root directory. I suppose the files there are installed by dotnet framework and LabVIEW and will be installed to the target machine by dotnet framework and LabVIEW installer, is it correct? I searched that mscorlib is a Microsoft DLL but I don't know why it has a LabVIEW icon.

mscorlib is the the fundamental assembly for the .NET Framework; critical for .NET integration into LabVIEW. the files shown in your screenshot shouldn't be installed in the project directory or the root of your drive; they should exist in the GAC. Windows (and thus LabVIEW) considers this a special folder. LabVIEW doesn't show this folder in your files list for this reason; they appear to be in "no folder".
Although why mscorlib has a LabVIEW icon - that's a good question. Given the amount of .NET integration in LabVIEW, mscorlib would be the key dependency for all of it regardless of the other actual .NET assemblies used. I guess they just gave it a LabVIEW icon because it would be so commonly in your dependencies list.

I just installed arch linux last week and after installing some programs Im getting an error that says my file system root has low disk space. I have 5.4gb /boot  1.1gb swap 7.9gb /root and the rest, 486gb, for /home
I did the pacman -Sc command to try to free up some space but, it didn't free up much
also, when I go to my root folder and go to properties it says I have 128tb of stuff

tomk wrote:And a bit offtopic, but 5GB for /boot?! As you can see, you've only used 24MB, and even if you have multiple kernels it's unlikely to be more that 100MB, so you can gain a good bit of space there.
so, shrinking my /boot and extending my /root would be a good idea?
also, I tried most of what you all have suggested and I now have 1.7gb of free space but, it's still saying I have 128tb of stuff. should I just pay no attention to it or is there any other way to fix that?
edit: I used ncdu and got this http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/9909 … hamsod.png on my root folder

  • No longer invisible files in root directory

Since upgrading my 12" Powerbook to Leopard I now notice that I am seeing all the system files at the top level of the hard drive. bin cores etc sbin usr var volumes. Even after upgrading to 10.5.2 they are still there. Is there an easy way to make them invisible again?

I've had this happen on a few machines, here's how to solve:
    Open TextEdit
Create a documnet and put each visible item name you want to stay hidden on a line ie.:
    bin
    cores
    etc
    sbin
    usr
    var
    volumes
Then go to the Format menu and select "Make Plain Text".
Now save the file as ".hidden" in the root (make sure you don't have the .txt extension & also uncheck "If no extension is provided, use .txt")
Now restart and those files will be hidden. Note: if you notice any items left out upon restart, you can reopen the ".hidden" file by recent documents.

  • Strange and fatal file name / root folder problem. Please help!

Hi there. I wonder if anybody could help me!
I am using CS4 but this problem still occurred in CS3. When I
set up a new site in Dreamweaver I go through the usual motions
selecting the local root folder and images folder. Then when I go
into the new site it creates an initial site cache as usual. After
this (when I try to upload anything for example) the cache seems to
have disappeared (i.e. all local files disappear in DW). It tells
me that I should go through setting up the site process again but
this only ends up going round in circles!
Curiously, when I look at my HD in finder, Dreamweaver has
created a new folder named "Macintosh HD" and inside it follows the
exact same file structure as the "real" local files except the
website files do not exist inside the root folder!
I can not understand what is going on here. I suspect it
might be something to do with the locations of files and relative /
    absolute linking on the HD?
Please help if you can! Thanks.

What is the NAME of your hard drive? Does it (or any
    intermediate folder)
contain unusual characters (apostrophes, parentheses, etc.)?

  • Strange files in root directory

Yesterday I noticed that some strange files (directories, actually) had appeared in the root directory on my MacBook Pro, that is, the directory that contains the standard Finder-viewable Applications and System directories and the Unix bin and usr directories.
The new directory was named 5ffffffcb00, and it contained two other hex-named directories, which were empty. Perhaps foolishly, I trashed them yesterday. Nothing bad seems to have happened, but this morning they have all reappeared. Here's the output of "ls -alR /5ffffffcb00/":
    total 16

    drwxr-xr-x 5 however admin 170 Oct 31 09:02 ..
Does anyone have any idea about these? They're visible in the Finder.

If your child pages are open when you update the Template, you need to save them again (after you have saved the Template).
You can update "all pages based on your template" at Modify > Templates > Update pages: Files that use... [choose the name of your template]
I'm also assuming that the changes that you are making are within the Ineditable Regions of your Template. Changes made in the Editable Regions will not, by design, change when you change that part of the Template.

  • Mavericks Finder Find File doesn't find files in [Root]/Library

I wanted to put the "Epson Printer Utility 4" application in my dock bar. So in Finder, I selected File > Find, and set it to "Name" "begins with" "Epson Printer". Mavericks found the "Epson Printer Finder" application in [Root] / Applications / Epson Software, but it did not find "Epson Printer Utility 4" in [Root] / Library / Printers / EPSON / InkjetPrinter2 / Utility / UT4. As a test, I also tried File > Find for the "World Clock" widget in [Root] / Library / Widgets - also not found. Both files are fully visible to me, and I have have Admin privileges. I set my Finder preferences to "Search This Mac" when performing a search. I can't find any other preference to have Mavericks really, truly search ALL of This Mac, including the root directory folders. Any help? Thanks, Peter

Download and run Find Any File to search for the file by Name contains "xxxx".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

  • Invisible files (etc, var, tmp) become visible after Disc Utility Restore

After cloning my hard disc to an external drive using the Disc Utility Restore function the three files var, etc, tmp have become 'visible' as aliases. How do I restore them to their 'invisible' status and how do I prevent this happening again?
The 'restored' external drive works fine as a startup disc with all other files as they should be.

Personally I think the easiest solution is to just do what all versions of OS X did up to Tiger: create the .hidden file and list the files. While Tiger no longer creates the file, the Finder will still read one if it is present. What I did was open TextEdit, set format to plain text, listed:
    var
    etc
    tmp
Saved as hidden to the root level of the drive, then opened Terminal, did cd to /, then
    mv hidden .hidden
Relaunch Finder and files are now hidden from view, without any monkeying with the files themselves. The Apple recommendation for the problem makes me feel faint.
