File in use by Finder

I recently discovered that overwriting files selected in Finder with the little preview expanded is not possible because finder keeps the file in use. When preview is collapsed the problem does not occur.
This happens i.e. when exporting a pdf in Indesign, check the size of the file and then later re-export the pdf. This is very annoying and I think Finder should not lock the file when showing the file with preview expanded. The file is not really in use by another app.
Apple please fix this small bug but annoying bug.

I cannot duplicate that behavior here, though I don't have Indesign. I tried with another Adobe app (Photoshop Elements), and was able to save over the file just fine, regardless of whether the preview was displayed in the Finder. I don't know what's going on, but if it only happens in Indesign, it's not a bug in the Finder as you seem to be suggesting. Are you able to duplicate the behavior in any other apps?

I suppose that's possible, in much the same way that it is possible that I could throw a message in a bottle in Lake Erie and expect it to be found by a friend on the English coast. Technically possible, but putting the letter in the mail with the right address on it would be more effective. If you truly believe this is a bug, you can let Apple know with the [Apple feedback page|http://www.apple.com/feedback>... but based on what you've said so far, that would be a waste of someone's time. If it is a bug, you need to gather more information if you expect your report to be taken seriously.

4GB File Size Limit in Finder for Windows/Samba Shares?

I am unable to copy a 4.75GB video file from my Mac Pro to a network drive with XFS file system using the Finder. Files under 4GB can be dragged and dropped without problems. The drag and drop method produces an "unexepcted error" (code 0) message.
I went into Terminal and used the cp command to successfully copy the 4.75GB file to the NAS drive, so obviously there's a 4GB file size limit that Finder is opposing?
I was also able to use Quicktime and save a copy of the file to the network drive, so applications have no problem, either.
XFS file system supports terabyte size files, so this shouldn't be a problem on the receiving end, and it's not, as the terminal copy worked.
Why would they do that? Is there a setting I can use to override this? Google searching found some flags to use with the mount command in Linux terminal to work around this, but I'd rather just be able to use the GUI in OS X (10.5.1) - I mean, that's why we like Macs, right?

I have frequently worked with 8 to 10 gigabyte capture files in both OS9 and OS X so any limit does not seem to be in QT or in the Player. 2 GIg limits would perhaps be something left over from pre-OS 9 versions of your software, as there was a general 2 gig limit in those earlier versions of the operating system. I have also seen people refer to 2 gig limits in QT for Windows but never in OS 9 or later MacOS.

How to delete when file in use by the finder?

I have two files in my trash which won't delete. I get the error that they are being used by another program. Holding down option, using secure empty trash, using the terminal method of deleting the trash.. none of them work.
So I did the terminal command: lsof /path-to-file and found out it was being used by Finder. I don't think I can exactly quit the Finder process in Activity Monitor.. so how can I get these files out of my trash?

Thanks. Unfortunately, when I quit finder and try to delete the files in the trash by the following command:
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
It tells me "Directory not empty". Argghh..
I feel like I've tried everything. Can someone give me some other suggestions? Thanks

DURIM - Okay. I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]? We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro? If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested. Windows Server 2008 R2 File in Use - How to find the computer that has it in use

Lately we've been having an access database go into read only mode on our file server. When i go into the manage open files screen on the file server, it show the file being used by a functional account and the open mode is set to read. Which confuses
me how the file can get set in read only mode when the only person who has it open has it open in read mode. Anyway, when i kick the user out of the file then the database is not read only mode anymore. Since this is getting accessed by a functional
account, I'm not sure who is opening it up. Is there a way to find the IP address of this person?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

I had not accepted any file transfers via AirDrop as I was asleep so I am a bit confused by all the posts that say that the only way it will work is by the end user accepting a request to transfer files. I am on a home network which has both a soft and hard firewall. I checked my firewall logs and have no signs of intrusion or intrusion attempts. I checked my network map to see see if someone had brute forced my router and was using it but the only assets listed were mine. My router is set up to not be accessable from wireless computers, and is filtered to only allow use by a assets in the MAC Address list. I am an IT by trade but this is my first mac so I am not completely savy in the ways of the ways of macdom. I have found several posts with suggestions on how to turn off and came up with the following terminal command "defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -boolean YES". My question is this, how is it possible that my AirDrop was activated and in the middle of a file tranfer if I did not initiate it? I do have a MacMini on my network but its WiFi is turned off so the transfer was not with it. I have read on different posts that you cannot AirDrop if the computer is not on the same network but there were no foreign assets on my network. So my question is this
1. If AirDrop can not be used with another computer if it is not on the same network, how was it being used?
2. How can AirDrop be used to xfer files if I did not accept or initate it?
It seems to be a pretty big security hole to me. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

First In the mediator's routing rule use assign property $in.property.jca.file.FileName to $out.property.jca.file.FileName
In the BPEL's receive activity go to the properties tab and get the property to a BPEL variable. That should do it.

Could you have logged into another account?
If you go to System Preferences>Users and Accounts what accounts are listed?
To show users at login go to the Login Options of chanck the box that says show list of users.
If they they are gone and you can't find them then restore them from a backup

Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
drwxrwxrwx 13 yourusername staff hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

Searching for files (Photos) using Finder

I have just upgrade to iLife 06 from iLife 04. Previously when searching for files to open up in Adobe Photoshop I selected 'Pictures' within the finder menu and followed the dates until I found the correct file No. For some reason since installing iPhoto 06, everything is stored in Roll No's. Could someone please let me know how I can search the files within iPhoto, through Finder, to find the correct file by date - as in the date the photo was taken?

Everyone complained about how iPhoto stored it's images in iPhoto 5 so I guessed they changed it to the roll system.
Open iPhoto and change the title of your rolls to something that is more relevant to what is in the roll.
I have my rolls dated with a couple of words in the name, such as
"1/24/06 Fire pit"
Once you change the title of the roll in iPhoto, it will also change in the Finder.
This should help you a lot.
If you want the edited version of a photo, look for the roll in the Modified folder.
If you want the Original version of a photo, look for the roll in the Originals folder.
Also, set up PhotoShop in iPhoto 6 preferences to be your external editor.
Preferences>General
Edit Photo>scroll to last option and navigate to PS to choose it to open.
Now you can control click on an image in iPhoto and scroll to any of the menu choices to edit your photo.
You must however "save" the image with the same name and it must be flattened. The edit will then be reflected within iPhoto.
