"File In Use" errors

Hi there,
Just last week we installed a new iMac (Intel) onto our network. In the process, we retired an old iMac running OS 9. The old iMac (and now the new) serves a small amount of files to other Macs runnings various versions of X (10.2.8 and 10.3.8).
Since moving to the new Mac, when we run our backup procedure -- which is really little more than copying a series of folders to external media -- we get File In Use or Locked errors. The errors seem to correspond to files that were worked on that day, but aren't actually OPEN on those remote machines.
The types of files are Word documents. Each version of Word is bonafide X version, nothing run in the Classic environment.
Since we shut down the machines at night ultimately, I have asked people to shut down the machines before they run the back and see if the error recurs. If it does, I've asked them to reboot the iMac (Intel).
Is there anything else I can do to resolve this?

I Presume this is within a network right? Do all of the files have read/write permissions to them? Have you tried making the ownership of the files shared instead of a distinct user? You can click "Get Info" on the files by Right Clicking (ctrl-click). Maybe toggle some of the settings in there. In addition to that since your on a network are you using Apple's File sharing method?
Sorry if I didn't understand your question correctly.

  • File in use error - copying from a faulty external hard drive

    Hi,
I have a 750GB Western Digital external hard drive, which contains two partitions - (1) HDBACKUP - a Time Machine backup of my laptop drive, and (2) MEDIA - pictures including an Aperture library, and videos.
When I plug the drive in, only the MEDIA partition mounts. And I get an error saying Disk Utility cannot repair the drive and to backup the files as soon as I can, and reformat the drive.
When I try to copy the files onto another drive using Finder, it copies part of the file and then gives me a "File in use" error and stops. I tried copying via Terminal and its the same - this time I get a "Resource busy" error.
There are no other apps accessing the files. And this happens for every file on the drive.
So how do I go about copying the files off the drive?
I tried using DiskWarrior but it was stuck on Step 1 - Searching for Volume Information, after 3 hours.
I really need to get the Aperture Library off the drive. Any ideas on how I can copy it across?
    Thanks

This did not work. I still get an error trying to repair with Disk Utility.
    It gets to
    Starting repair tool:
    Checking file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
The volume MEDIA could not be verified completely.
    Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
So DiskUtility tells me to backup as many files as possible. However, when I try copying these files, I get a "File in use" error.

  • Sky Drive Pro sync stopped due to spurious File in use error

I am having a lot of difficulty getting Sky Drive Pro to sync files from my work desktop to my work laptop.
When I boot up my laptop, a bubble appears in the bottom left with the headline "File in use". Then the text "We can't sync while <very very long path to file, truncated> is open. Please close it so sync can continue.
The actual filename in question is called "System.Data.SqlXml.2.0.0.0.Nullness.Generated.xml"
I have deleted that file from my desktop. That file does not exist on my laptop. When I boot up my laptop, I am not connected to the internet / LAN, so it must be getting this filename from some type of internal Sky Drive Pro cache on the laptop rather than
    the cloud.
    Other information worthy of note:
    * Sky Drive Pro says it is syncing files according to the icon on the bottom right of the screen - it is animated, and has a little text when you hover over it "SkyDrive Pro - Syncing files, 3,717 remaining" In actual fact it is not doing anything,
    it always says 3,717 files.
    * From the SkyDrive right click menu from Windows Explorer, the View Sync Problems is greyed out - apparently it doesn't believe that there is any problem. I only see the file in use error when first booting the laptop. I'm not aware of any other way of
being able to see the problem.
    * Using Windows Update, I applied one or more patches for SkyDrive Pro on my laptop and desktop. I did this after receiving the error. Windows Update does not report that there are any further patches to download.
    * On my desktop, I deleted or renamed any file that the Sync client complained about. It is currently not complaining about any files (desktop).

I am having this very same problem, too (classic 160G). Even tried doing clean install of Tiger, then running all updates...sort of starting over, if you will. Didn't work. Took it to the Genius Bar twice, and they had no problems on their MacBook. The second time, they let me exchange it for another, since I was (wrongly) convinced that I had a lemon. Has anyone found/heard of a solution? I'm hoping for an iTunes (7.4.3?) update to fix this probelm v soon...

  • File in Use error deleting PDF in Windows 8.1 SkyDrive

I'm using SkyDrive and have ran into an interesting issue.
I'm also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard
When I save a PDF file to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1, it becomes difficult to delete the file via the file explorer
I get a "File In Use" error - "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program" - yet it's not.
It gives me the option to "Try Again" and I click that about 4 times, getting the same error, and then after the 4th time, it allows the deletion of the file.
If I were to save the PDF to my desktop, it deletes immediately.
It seems to only be in the SkyDrive directory where it's an issue
Other document types do not have this problem.
I am using the standard security within Windows 8.1, and it hasn't detected a virus.
All newly created PDF files are acting like this.  Non-PDF files are deleting properly.
So it's not existing/old files, or non-PDF files.

Only for PDFs.  Acrobat and Reader are not running while deleting the file.
In looking into this further, the Modern app for SkyDrive shows these files as awaiting updates on SkyDrive - even after 24 hours later.  Until they are updated, they continue to have this issue within the File Explorer view.
I would say that this is a SkyDrive issue, but it’s only related to PDFs.  Word, Excel, JPGs, etc. all function properly.  It seems to be some interaction between Acrobat or PDFs and SkyDrive.

  • "ipod cannot be updated...required file in use" error message HELP!

So I just updated my itunes with the new 7.0 and everything works great, except-- every 10 mins or so, I get this error message "The ipod "xxx's ipod" cannot be updated. The required file is in use."
Nothing happens, I just have to click "ok", but its really annoying. And it pops up again in a few minutes.
I seem to remember this happening before on another update but I don't remember what I did.
Anyone else experiencing this or know what to do?
    Thanks!!

I am having the exact same problem -- Itunes version 7 update seems to have created this issue. I get this error message about every five minutes if my Ipod is plugged into my computer, "Ipod cannot be updated. Required file is in use." Super annoying. I noticed a solution posted on this forum but it doesn't seem to work for Macs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Powerpoint 2013 throwing 'File in Use' errors when saving to a network drive, file is NOT in use

One of our sites is having a strange issue when saving to a network location in Powerpoint.  I'm not sure it's a Powerpoint problem, but it's a place to start...
When saving a ppt to a mapped network drive (the client is running Windows 8 / Office 2013, the network drive is a DFS share, pointed to a Server 2012 machine if that matters), users will almost always get the following error:
"Someone else is working in (filepath\name) right now. Please try again later."
This happens regardless of where the file is being saved on the network drive, in fact it happens even when there is no pre-existing file with that name in the location.  So, even if I'm saving a brand new copy of test.pptx to F:\Share\PPT where there
is not currently a test.pptx, I get the error.
Word, Excel, and all other tested apps save properly.  Powerpoint can save correctly to the local computer, but not to the network drive or to My Documents (which redirects to the same network drive).
When the error pops up, if I look in Open Files in Computer Management on the Fileserver, I see the file I'm trying to save listed as being open, but it shows 'Disconnected' rather than a username.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - again, not sure that this is a Powerpoint problem - could be Windows 8 or some mysterious DFS thing...
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Been having a very similar issue in our environment and just came across this thread while Googling and looking for answers.
In our case, we have Windows 7 clients and 3 main files servers - 2 are Server 2008 R2, and one is Server 2012.  We use PeerLink File Collaboration to sync the files between
the servers (similar concept to DFS).  For us, it seems to happen specifically with Excel 2013, and only when saving to the Server 2012 file server.  I can reproduce the message pretty much every time.  After seeing your post,
I tried it in Powerpoint just out of curiosity, but it saved properly - Word saves properly as well.
Been doing a bunch of testing to try and narrow it down, and this is what I've found:
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2012 = error message.
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2008 R2 = no error message.
    Excel 2010 -> Server 2008 AND Server 2012 = no error message.
<o:p>We've been leaning towards the PeerLink replication as the culprit up to this point, but last night I did some testing with the PeerLink Collaboration turned off, and
still received the error message.. so now I'm even more confused!
I see that it's been a few months since your post..  have you made any progress here?</o:p>

  • Required File In Use - ERROR

I just purchased a 8Gb Nano, I have it formatted for Mac. When I connect it via the USB cable, iTunes{7.0 (70)} launches almost immediately. I get the following error message: The iPod "iPod Nano" cannot be updated. The required file is in use. I have disk mode enabled. I am manually uploading songs into it. The same happens to my 30Gb fifth generation iPod. Does any one know what the story is? Is it me or the new version of iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Dmitry

    Any Suggestions?

  • Keep getting "required file in use" error when importing from a disc

Installed 12.0.1 this weekend and now cannot import songs from a disc (have tried on several different discs). I keep getting the error message that "Error occurred while converting the file. The required file is in use). Have rebooted several times with no improvement.  There doesn't seem to be any problem playing anything off my existing library, but I also get failure messages when purchasing from Amazon. Anyone have ideas?

    Any Suggestions?

  • "Files in use" error when trying 1.2 update in iTunes 7.0

When iTunes 7.0 comes up, it says that an update is available (I've got 1.1.2 on my iPod) and asks if I want to update to 1.2. I click "Install" and my iPod comes out of the "updating" state, then re-enters it, then iTunes puts up a dialog with the msg: "The iPod cannot be updated because it contains files that are in use by another application." HAH! The only thing in use is iTunes. I've disconnected contacts update with Outlook, made sure Outlook is not running in Task Mgr, etc. AFter clicking "OK", my iPod stays perpetually updating, though iTunes says it is finished. I disconnect after I hear the iPod hard drive power down and all seems ok. Apple's iPod update integration with iTunes is unstable (witness all problem posts). They should at least bring back manual update for those of us who don't mind doing it that way. Anyone else have this problem and have a solution???

Success! At least my iPod finally updated and no longer hangs in 'Update' mode forever. Here's what I did:
    * Follow instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I did everthing up to and including "Empty your Temp directory and restart"
    * After installing and starting iTunes, my iPod updated songs, etc. normally.
    * I clicked on update btn. Got and "updating iPod" msg box.
    * Got an error 1417, and iPod no longer appeared in iTunes.
    * Shut down iTunes and restarted.
    * iPod updated songs, etc. normally.
    * Clicked on update btn. got "updating iPOd" msg box and this time it actually worked.
    * I think it was an accident that it actually worked, but you might try this yourself. It shouldn't have been this difficult.

  • I close PDF file, but cannot rename in Windows Explorer -- file in use error

After viewing a file in Acropbat X Standard, I save and close the file (but leave Acrobat open).
If i try to rename the file in Windows Explorer, it fails and reports this error:
Cannot rename <filename>.pdf: The file is in use by the following program: Adobe Acrobat.
The only way to release the lock is to close Acrobat.
Any solutions? I frequently have several PDF files open at the same time and do not want to close the tool just to release one file lock.
    Jim

Been having the same issue here with Acrobat X. Plus, often can't even delete the file after closing Acrobat entirely. It is Acrobat that will not release the file back to Windows.
Only thing that resolves this here, in order to be able to delete the file, is to log user off/on or reboot Windows. Crazy making.
Would be great if Adobe could patch this up. Acrobat X is an expensive program and would be a nice gesture to customers if they fix this.

  • Yosemite 10.10.1 will not allow me to copy multiple files to a NAS -error file in use, but other OS OK.

I am running Mac OS 10.10.1 on a Mac Mini with 16G.
I have a Buffalo NAS and wanted to copy files from one folder on the NAS  to another on the NAS.
Under Yosemite I can only copy them one at a time. If I try to copy more than one I get an error message that the file is in use.
Under SNS 10.6.3 (running under Parallels) I can easily copy a large number of files.
Again under 10.10.1 I get the same problem when copying from my desktop to the NAS.
The files are definitely not in use elsewhere and in any case if they were I wouldn't be able to copy one at a time.
When I try to copy multiple files the OS creates greyed out icons of all the files to copy and then aborts when it actually tries to copy the first file.
Any clues please, my current work around is to compress all the files to move, move the archive, expand the archive. This is not going to work for very large numbers of files - l'll be at it all day.
    Tony

I have been unable to drag and drop large files, even onto the Desktop, let alone onto my NAS - I get the dragged files freezing in the middle of the screen or I get the 'unable to copy / file in use' error.
Talking to Apple Support, they had me set up a new User, and then within that new account, the trouble went away. This pointed to the StartUp items being run in the original troublesome account,
I have deleted all of my 3rd Party programs and then installed them one by one until the problem came back, and in my case (Macbook Air 5,2 running 10.10.3 Yosemite) I found it was DropBox causing the conflict. I have DropBox running in the Menu Bar (top of screen) and disabling sync (bottom left corner) stopped the file copy problem. Try disabling DropBox sync is file copying is failing?

  • Can't Save - File In Use Or Left Open

So, got the oft-reported error just now. Still using CS4, until Monday or Tuesday.
The file was a placed image in InDesign, and opened into Photoshop using the Edit Original feature. Made my changes, hit Save, got the "file in use" error.
Used What's Keeping Me to see what process was preventing me from saving the image... drum roll please... it's InDesign.
So, how to use the Edit Original feature if you can't save your work to update the link when you're finished???

This message is a reply to the first "Spiers" reply to my post, not the one referring to Windows.
Which widget are you referring to? The mini icons to the right of my forum ID at the top are New, Your Stuff, History and Browse. None of these offer anywhere to go related to my post. They just dump you in another random area of the forums or to your own post or account history.
However, there is to the right, a sidebar that reads: "More Like This" which offers links to posts that DO relate to my problem. But, they DO NOT offer a solution. You, like the moderator in the PS forum, are basically telling me the same thing: Please take your issue somewhere else.
Why can't I get a direct answer, maybe like "Abobe is aware of the problem and is working on a patch" or "as obvious that it appears to be a CS issue, the problem is actually with OS X, etc." Don't give me the bum's rush.

  • Error-Receiver File Adapter using Variable substitution when file is empty

    XI Experts,
We are on PI 7.0, SP14.
We are using variable subtitution to get the filename from source message. This works fine as long as we have data in the payload for filename element. But we have a scenario where we don't have to create file when certain condition does not exists in source message so in the message payload filename element will not exists in such condition and file will be empty and we should not create file.
Parameter in the communication channel for Handling empty message is "Ignore".
Does anyone knows how to handle this scneario. We don't want to default any file name in the message mapping if source file name element does not exists.
We are following getting error in the Adapter engine.
MP: Exception caught with cause com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.RecoverableException: Error during variable substitution: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.varsubst.VariableDataSourceException: The following variable was not found in the message payload: file: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.configuration.DynamicConfigurationException: Error during variable substitution: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.varsubst.VariableDataSourceException: The following variable was not found in the message payload: file
    Thanks
    MP

You can implement this by writing the module to throw an exception or whatever method you want to execute.
If you don't want to receive an error message then module is suitable for you.

  • Cannot delete file - tried everything - file in use by Windows Explorer error

Hi - I have tried now for 2-3 hours trying to delete an .mkv file from my "Downloads" folder
It says the file is in use by Windows Explorer and cannot be deleted
I have tried deleting it using Del command prompt as me and as Administrator (I am the Admnistrator, there are no other users) - no luck
I have tried Safe Boot and then deleting - no luck
I have tried rebooting many times and then deleting - no luck
Any ideas? It's driving me nuts

hi to all who have this bug- "file in use by Windows Explorer error"
this is the only way that it works:
    1.type cmd in search box
2.go to the drive and the directory the file is in ,for example:
after you type cmd you have a black screen with c:\user\
type in the drive the file is in and hit enter example - d: than hit enter
    than you should see d:\>
now click the directory the problem file is in ,for example i will call the directory "movies"  type in this-   cd movies
now you will see this d:\movies>
to delete the file type this:  del filename.mkv (dont forget the .mkv or any other file extension) don't hit enter yet, first open task manager (cntrl+shift+esc) go to process tab than right click on explorer.exe choose and click on end process
now your desktop should disappear. get back to the "cmd" window and hit enter.
now the file is deleted. now go back to the task manager and click on "file" on the upper left corner then on new task then type in "explorer.exe"
    and you are done
please note that the file name you choose to delete cant be with spaces between the letters .if so you will need to change it in the same way in the cmd window only the comand will be instead of "del filename.mkv"(for example) after you are in the
    right drive and directory:
    rename "test space.mkv" testspace.mkv
    hope i helped
this is the only way it workes
Instead of running a CMD prompt and typing everything, just start up Winrar or Winzip, kill Explorer, then delete problem MKV files to your hearts content within Winrar or Winzip.
Winrar and Winzip will navigate your folders as well.
After you are done, create a new Explorer task.
or.....   if you need to rename MKV files, just rename them within Winrar/Winzip with Explorer not running.
I change the MKV extension to AVI (in Winrar with Explorer killed) in order to avoid Explorer issues, if I ever want to move the files in the future without needing to kill Explorer all the time to do so .
Using WinRAR works for me. Using the cmd function becomes complicated when I cannot rename my file with the rename command".

  • "file in use" and other "unexpected" error messages

I may have found a bug in Tiger, and in case nobody has a plausible explanation for the problem, I will send a bug report:
I copied a locked file (shows a little lock symbol in its icon) from one Mac to the other via a network share (using Finder). I then tried to open that file on the other Mac, but failed with the error message "file in use". But the computer the file had been copied from had already disconnected and shut down, and the Mac I had copied the file to had booted once.
I then looked at the file security settings, but found nothing abnormal. But I was not allowed to change any of the security settings (owner and permissions).
I then tried the Terminal and tried commands like "sudo chmod" or "sudo chown", and got nothing but error messages.
What kind of operating system does not allow the supervisor ("root") to change file permissions?!?
I then tried to repair the volume, but DiskUtility thinks all is OK. Fine. And the file is obviously NOT in use (otherwise the volume could not have been unmounted).
I finally tried the tool SetFileInfo from the development system to change permissions and type/creator. "sudo SetFileInfo -whatever" gives "unexpected error". Aha, "unexpected". So there is something wrong in Denmark. Or California.
At least there is one hint what's going wrong: GetFileInfo shows an abnormal type/creation combination, something like "brok" and "macs".
The only thing I finally managed to do with the file was "sudo rm". I got some warning about unknown user and unknown group and override whatever, then the file was deleted. At least I think so. After removing the "locked" flag the copy process went fine, and the copy of the file could be opened on the other Mac, so it seems that there is a problem with copying "locked" files.

Thank you for that hint! It does not fix the bug, but opens a way to a workaround.
I repeated the test, i.e. copied a locked file, and indeed the copy is protected with a "uchg" flag.
Removing the "uchg" flag still left the file locked, i.e. no other attribute (owner/group/rwx) could be changed. But the SetFile command now was able to remove the creator ('MACS') and type ('brok') settings.
After that the "second lock" had been removed, and now the "locked" attribute could be removed, and after having removed this third lock the file was accessible.
So I think that was enough of (unpaid) investigation, and I am going to send a bug report to Apple.
