File iTunes Library.itl can't be read as created by newer version of Itunes

Recently did an update/download from iTunes - I assume version 10 - and since then can't open iTunes on computer and I get message the File "iTunes Library.itl" can't be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Please advise how I can rectify

In the event of no responses with an easier solution I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and associated programs and we are back working - hurrah!

Suddenly  I cannot open iTunes, the above message is what I receive. I have done a bit of trolling the web in an attempt to fix it, but still no joy, anybody out there......help,,!

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

  • Why can't I click on "Create AAC New Version"??

I'm trying to create a ringtone on the latest iTunes... but when I go to File > Create A New Version it gives me options that are "un-clickable"
    It says
    Create iPod or iPhone Version
Create iPad or Apple TV Version
    Create ACC Version
But I can't click any of them for some reason?
And its not a song from iTunes itself, so its not ACC protected or anything. Its only 21 seconds.
Any solutions to this problem ?

with your Itunes open and playing, select view from the task bar, click visuilzar> there are abunch of different choices

  • ITunes won't open. iTunes Library.itl can't be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

The error message I get when I try to open iTunes says, The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." It gives me the option to Quit or Download iTunes.  When I select Download iTunes it checks for software updates and says iTunes is up todate.  I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes and this didn't help.  It still wouldn't open because of the same error.

Normally you get this message if you downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but it can sometimes happen if an upgrade doesn't go through properly.
You should be able to wok round this by rebuilding your library from the xml file as in this Apple article:

  • The file "iTunes Library.itl" can not be read because it was created by a new version of iTunes.

so my computer got unplugged and its battery died right as it was finishing an iTunes update. when i restarted it, i got the above message. i re-installed iTunes from the website and that didn't help. i went directly to the mp3 files and tried to open those. no go there either. :frustrating!!!
when the "dialog box" shows up with that message, there is an "OK" button, but there when you click on it, it just closes. there is no prompt or hint at what one can do to remedy this situation. any help?
btw, i have a Dell laptop running WindowsXP with all my iTunes music on a detached hard drive.

I already thanked you but under the other "post". I am ecstatically happy to have my old system back, and will never upgrade anything again .. fear I'm doomed to happy dinausaur-hood.

  • "Can't open...created with newer version of iTunes...Missing most of Songs!

I got this message. Followed instructions I found on Apple Support: Home-->Music-->iTunes. Dragged iTunes folder onto desktop. iTunes 8.2.1 opened but it was as if I'd never used iTunes before. It restored some of my music but very little compared to what I had. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and recently had my HD crash after trying to install OS10.7. Got a new HD, transferred files, etc. from ext. HD. Have had several problems since with HD corruption....Missing iPhoto pictures, too. Help!

    Hello,
iTunes 8.2.1 is pretty outdated. Please go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install the current iTunes 10.2.2

    Update your iTunes version.

  • ITunes corrupted, must be reinstalled. Now 'the file iTunes Library itl. cannot be read, created by newer version of iTunes.'

My iTunes programme on Windows PC has suddenly become corrupted and must be reinstalled. After two attempts, I installed the requisite 64 bit version, but it won't open as "The file 'iTunes Library itl.' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."  Where do I go from here (bearing in mind very little technical knowhow!)?

There are two things you can try here:
If you updated fairly recently, you can recover a backup copy of the library file made when you updated.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
This gives you the library as it was when you updated.
Or you can recreate your library from the xml file, this will be more up to date, but not all the metadata is recovered.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
At the end of the article it tells you how to add files you your library if you don't have an xml file.
Anywhere it tells you to drag a file to the trash in either article, I would drag it to the desktop or another folder of your choice in case you need it later.
The second article also include links to general troubleshooting if iTunes will not start after recovering/recreating your library.

  • I have just just installed a new version of itunes. When i tried to run the new version it came up with the message "The file ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by newer version of itunes. Can anybody advise?

I have just just installed a new version of itunes. When i tried to run the new version it came up with the message "The file ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by newer version of itunes.
I installed the new version because itunes had not recognised my ipod nano 5G, and told me to reinstall. Itunes selected which version to install, so I don't understand what is going on. To add insult to injury it installed a pile of malware which I am still trying to get rid off.
    Any advice would be helpful
