File Links in PDF getting messed up when viewed in browser

When we put a file link in a PDF (\\servername\sharename\directory\file.doc) and display that PDF in a browser, when we click on that link, it becomes http://webname/servername/sharename/directory/file.doc which does not work at all.
I have tried the current versions of Reader 8 and 9, as well as an old copy of 6.1 in browsers ID6/7/8 and Firefox 3.5.
Our web unit insists that it didn't used to do this.
If I change the Reader option to not open inside the web browser, then clicking on the file link works fine. It's just when Reader opens up in the browser that we have this problem.
Anyone else run into this? Our folks really like Reader inside of the browser.
Thanks.

This is a post for Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader as it is a functionality issue with Acrobat.  It is peculiar, I am having the same problem when I save the file to a local Windows Home Server.
I have a link called file://whsservername/foldername and it becomes file://whsservername/foldernamewherepdfislocated////whsservername/foldername which is totally convoluted.  I am trying to research a solution for this but if anyone else knows what settings to change in Acrobat that would be a great help to post.

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • Figures order gets messed up when converting from Word 2010 to Acrobat PDF

    Hi,
Im wondering if someone can help me. I have a 10 page document in Word 2010 with many figures (rectangles and circles overlapping each other). The order of these figures are essential. I have triplechecked the order in Word with the correct figure marked as on top. But when I convert (by printing) to PDF the order of the figures gets messed up making a mess in the document.
    I have Acrobat 9.
Could someone please help me with this?
    Many thanks!

I solved this by taking the document with me to a computer with Word 2007 installed instead of 2010. I guess the problem lays in the fact as some of you mentioned that Acrobat 9 doesnt support Word 2010. Now I know why! This is a bummer though, upgrading to Acrobat X isnt exactly cheap and I dont want to downgrade Word as I really like some of the new features in it (as the screenclip option).
    Thanks for your answers!

  • Saved files in illustrator turn into all black when viewing

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums + google but haven't been able to get an answer on why this is happening.  Sometimes when I save files as a pdf in Illustrator, or receive files from other people the image loses it's colour.
All colour is just black.  I'm attaching a screen shot so you can see what I mean, the colours here are supposed to be a shades of a PMS colour, but instead they're all black.
    Hopefully someone can help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jo

You should never view any PDF in any other program than Acrobat or Reader. All other viewers support only a subset of PDF standards, so they are not reliable viewer program.
The Word thing has nothing to do with Illustrator or PDF. You need to know,
in which program the Word embedded graphic was created.
how the graphic was saved as. Not every file type, which can be imported on Word in Windows is supported completely on the Mac, like EMF, WMF, but also other file types. (The other way round is also true.)
How the graphic was imported. Some people copy an image or a graphic from a source and paste it via clipboard. Which is not a good way, because it needs several system ressources from the local computer to show up in the host application, in that case in Word. If such a document is opened on a different computer, often even on the same Operating System, those images show up black. The only correct and robust way to import images in Word is via the Insert-Command or button with a compatible file selected.
Another problem might be, that an image or graphic was inserted in a version which creates docx files, like 2007 or 2010.Those versions support more graphic file types than older versions do. But because some people think, it is better to save files as DOC than as DOCX (smae with PowerPoint or Excel) for compability those images get lost and are only represented as black boxes. In my experience it happens often with PNG-24 files. It is never a good idea to save DOCX back to DOC. I inerit only problems with that workflow. (Also when I import files into InDesign I get always messed up with footnotes with this method, several get lost, several change their reference with each other, I have got DOCs where not even 1 of 400 footnotes was on its original place after import to InDesign. But this is another topic, but it is also an argument to avoid this workflow!)

  • Macbook Pro Late 2008 gets real hot when viewing Flash Content.  Does anyone have a solution?

Macbook Pro Late 2008 gets hot, fans kick on at 6200 rpm, and CPU usage of about 65% when viewing Flash Content.  I've been to the Adobe Forum, but saw no solution for this.  Already unchecked Hardware Acceleration.  I had motherboard replaced just a week ago, so that's not the issue.  I hope someone can help.

    MDhennin wrote:
Yes it was happening before the logicboard was replaced.  I'm up to date with Flash and Software Updates too.  Macbook can handle everything but Flash content.  So I assume its related to some kind of incompatability.  Not sure though.  I have come across others who have the same issue.
Ok, dumb question on my part, but did any of those others find a solution? If not, what have they, and you, tried? If you don't mind, posting a link to content which causes this might be helpful (I don't watch a lot of Flash-based video, but I've never had an issue like that on my early 2008/less able MBP . . .).

  • Embedded swf files don't show / slow to load when viewing project online

I'm playing with the trial version of Captivate 3 and doing a
mock up of an e learning module. I have a project which is about 30
slides long and 4 or 5 of those slides have full motion recording
objects on the slide (that were created when I drag and dropped
something during the recording process). When I publish the
project, it creates a separate swf file for each of the motion
    recordings...
When I upload my published captivate project to my web server
(the html doc, main swf, and supporting swfs), everything plays
fine until I get to one of the slides that had one of the full
motion recordings on it. When I get to those slides, the captions
keep appearing, the audio keeps playing, etc. but the slide is
blank - the full motion recording doesn't load.
It appears that it just hasn't loaded yet, because if I try
running the whole thing again, then it works fine!
It's like the supporting SWF file hadn't finished loading but
the main swf just kept on going...
This seems like a really big bug to me? I'm pulling my hair
    out :(
Is there a way to compile the whole project into 1 SWF file?
Is there a way to embed the SWF files into the main SWF file so it
is taken into account when preloading?
Thanks to anyone who has some advice!! help!
    Gaspar

    Hi Gaspar,
Are you using a preloader for the project? If so, the default
one in Captivate waits for 60% of the project to load before
playing. Perhaps try to add the preloader if you aren't using one,
or remove it if you are to see if that makes a difference. In
Captivate 3, you can change this option in Preferences -->
Project --> Start and End --> Loading Screen.
    Good luck,
    David
Edit: I just tried this too and got the same results when
publishing with all versions of Flash - I was a little surprised to
see it even with Flash 7 exports, because Captivate has let me
embed .swf animations into a single .swf project file using Flash
    7. I'm guessing that whatever Flash "engine" Captivate uses to
create its own FMV .swfs must be Flash 8 or 9. That would be
something that would be nice to adjust - especially because of the
lack of the ability to merge .swf files into one file. I guess I'll
    send a feature request again...

  • Links not underlined when viewing in browser

I've set up a hyperlink style so that links are underlined.  When I view my site in 'Preview' mode they appear to be underlined and OK, but when I export, upload via FTP and view in browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE), they don't appear underlined ?  I thought it may have been due to the paragraph styles I have set for the content I have as links, but I've even tried removing the style and applying to a non-styled font... they still don't underline ?  Does anyone have ideas ?

    Hello,
Could you please confim if you have applied link to the text (by manually selecting the text) or to the "text box"?
If the link is applied to the text box, please check the settings in the text link style :
Please dit the text link style and check if making text underline there helps or not.

  • Bad navigation bar buttons/links when viewing in browser

i've created my own nav bar, but when i view it online, the buttons/links are out of line
i.e. the page you view has the buttons below or above the horizontal of all the other buttons.
    this looks scruffy!
everything is kosher when viewed in iWeb. none of the buttons overlap. i'm using standard web fonts (helvetica, courier).
i'm scratching my head wondering what's gone wrong.

    here's one:
    www.drewpower.com
i realised, after posting, that the offending button is the page title button you are on.
e.g. when you're on 'links', the 'links' button is duff.
my solution? well as they're redundant, i took em out.
but any feedback would be helpful.

  • Slices get messed up when linking

Has anyone been having funny problems with slices when you
make links for them? Linking messes up the whole page and breaks
away all the other slices a bit. Yes, I realize they go back into
place after linking by clicking on the outside. They do rearrange
but are not connected by a couple of millimeters or less around all
edges. I checked the border settings and they are zeroed. Any
    clues?

    > Any clues?
First clue would be to validate the page - this sounds like
    invalid HTML to
    me....

  • Colors get messed up when exporting to adobe pdf

I am working on a book cover that is mostly black. I have an image that has a black background that i have placed on the cover, and then i created a box and filled it with black for the rest of the cover. When i convert to pdf there is a noticible difference between the black of the picture (darker) and the black of the filled in box (lighter, almost looks grey). If i export to a jpeg it is fine, the colors blend seamlessly. What is going on? How do i fix it?

There is a lot that goes on with Blacks and exporting. First off, your image is probably photographic, or some sort of continuous tone raster image. If it is, and you are dealing with a naturally captured background, the black will have some variation from area to area, and it will have either R,G, and B components, or it will be a blend of the four CMYK channels. There's a good chance, from your description, that the black background you are placing it against is a frame filled with the [Black] color swatch, which is just 100% K ink without other components.
Adding other inks with 100% K results in a darker black, possibly with a cast toward another color, but still a color you would call black. Themore additional inks you add, the darker that black becomes, and 100% k, when printed, looks like gray in comparison. You may also have your preferences set to deceive you. In the Appearance of Black section, make sure that you have Display All Blacks Accurately set to show you the difference on screen.
When you export, colors can be preserved or converted to a destination profile. If you are converting RGB to CMYK, you will get a 4-color "rich black" equivalent. If you are converting to a different CMYK space than you have set for your working space, and you don't "preserve numbers," your 100% k will also convert to some four-color mix, but one that is lighter to simulate the single component black. If you convert to RGB, your blacks will convert to three-color RGB mixes.
What this means is that unless your image has a "dead flat" color (i.e. an artificial background that you've added in compositing an image) and you fill your drawn background in ID withthe same color mix (and are using the same color space as the image for your working space), there is virtually no chance of getting a seamless transition from image to ID background.

  • Links in PDF not working when viewed in browser

Whenever I view an interactive PDF in a Firefox window the links in the PDF don't work. They work in other browsers like Chrome and Safari, but in Firefox they are as dead as normal text.
It also says: "This PDF document contains forms (even though it doesn't). The filling of form fields is not supported."
Why is Firefox's PDF viewing and editing capabilities so poor when all the other browsers have not trouble with it?

hello, the pdf viewer is still somewhat experimental and under very active development - you could try if the same error is occurring in the current development version, which you can download as an addon from http://mozilla.github.io/pdf.js/extensions/firefox/pdf.js.xpi
in case it has the the same rendering problems, you could then file a bug report at https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js/issues (a github account is necessary for it though) - please also provide a sample document where the error is apparent!
