File locking with OSX Server & Microsoft Word

We have a small office LAN based on a Airport Extreme bases station. Periodically Microsoft Word reports a break in connection to the shared folder where we store documents to get disconnected. When that happens and the user reconnects to the share, the user gets the file read-only message for the Word document that was open at the time.
I have found that in order to clear the read-only flag, I have to restart the server and open the Word file on the server with the ID of the user who was editing the file on the remote computer. Only that seems to clear the file locking that causes the file to be read-only.
I cannot figure out a less drastic way to release the lock file. I don't see any hidden temp files in the same folder as the document that is locked for editing found by ls -a or in the root direction of the shared folder in the .TemporaryItems/folders.<UID> that seems to be holding the lock.
I have run chflags nouchg <Word file> from Terminal, but that seems to have no effect either. I also used xattr to see if there were any locks held that way, but I don't see anything that way either.
File sharing to Macs only, which are configured just to use AFP through OSX Server.
Does anyone understand how the file locks of Word documents can be released directly with out restarting the server?
I should add that the underlying problems seems to be WiFi related. The behavior is that the WiFi connection seems to break long enough that the shared volumes disconnects. Outlook also causes a break. This behavior seems to have started with 10.9 and the purchase of new Retina Display MacBook Pros. I turned off AppNap on the Office applications but that is not clearly helpful. I also have been told the problem seems more likely to occur when Word is open in the background and another program like Outlook is in the foreground.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Apple write an operating system and also produce file sharing software as part of that to be used as a file server. Apple provide documentation for third-party software developers on how they should write software to work with Apple's software and also give those developers early access to new versions so those third-party developers can test and if needed make adjustments and issue updates to cope with any Apple changes.
Some third-party developers are good at dealing with this, some are bad, and some totally ignore what Apple does and give the impression they don't care if their product works properly or not. I think we can all judge where Microsoft sits.
It appears Microsoft have never paid any attention in particular to how Apple expect file-locking to be handled when accessing files on a Mac server. There have been problems for years and years and years with Office. Two other problems I have seen which seem different to yours but probably related are -
With Office documents it is supposed to be possible for more than one person to edit the same file at the same time, consider it a miracle if this actually works
With Office in particular Word, there is an auto-save function, unfortunately the way this seems to be implemented it seems that Word creates a new temporary file each time it auto-saves the document and keeps all the previous temporary files open still, this eventually means potentially over a hundred temporary files are open - just for one Word document and you can then hit a limit on the total number of files you are allowed to have open at the same time. At this point further auto-saves fail, and you also encounter great difficulty doing a real full save of the document.
I do not hold Apple completely blameless over this issue, it is likely their file-locking implementations change too often, and have inadequate documentation, however even considering this a company the size of Microsoft with the amount of sales (and profit) they derive from Office for the Mac has no excuses at all for failing to put the effort in to resolve any such clearly critical problems.
We could go on and on about other areas where Microsoft don't play by the (software) rules. Even in Windows Office does not obey the standard print dialog rules Microsoft specified themselves!
Unfortunately not only is Office for Mac upgraded infrequently, but even when new paid for upgrades are released Microsoft have a history of still not fixing bugs. It goes without saying that a mere free update is even less likely to actually fix a bug, typically such free updates only address security issues. The next version of Office is going to be Office for Mac 2014 see http://www.macworld.com/article/2106643/microsoft-will-release-a-new-version-of- office-for-mac-this-year.html
One area I confidently predict Microsoft not to resolve in Office for Mac 2014 is that fact that Word for Mac still does not support right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Arabic. This is despite the fact that OS X itself has supported this for years and years, and despite the fact other Mac programs support this including the free TextEdit and Pages - both of which can read Word files. Some people may remember that at one point the Israeli Government temporarily banned all Microsoft software over this issue. See http://apple-beta.slashdot.org/story/03/10/15/2215249/israeli-government-suspend s-microsoft-contracts This issue goes back over TEN years!!
I note that Microsoft has now taken their OfficeForMac blog offline, probably due to the weight of criticisms. I would not say it is due to out-right anti-Microsoft hate, that war ended long ago. We just want products that work. I myself do use Microsoft products, even at home - where they are the best solution, so I use Microsoft Media Center for example. Sadly this is now being neglected by Microsoft.

hi i can't seem to copy and paste pdf files from preview to a microsoft word document. it always comes up with nonsense characters in the word document. how do i fix this? thanks in advance

    Hi,
The quickest way to do this (tested with OS 10.8.2, MS Word 2011) is in one line:
tell application "Microsoft Word" to close every document whose name begins with "book"
The reason why your script doesn't work is that you aren't specifying to Word which document you want it to close.
So, changing one line ought to do it:
close document incrementvalue -- instead of "close document"
But... when you close a document, you change the document count. Document 2 becomes document 1, document 3 becomes document 2 etc. So eventually you'd get a message saying "The object you are trying to access doesn't exist".
Because of this, if you want to do it in a repeat loop, you have to work backwards:
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
      set doc_count to count documents
      repeat with x from doc_count to 1 by -1
if name of document x begins with "book" then close document x
      end repeat
    end tell
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?

    HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!
    Goodluck!

  • I'm using an iBook G4. I'm having a problem with a lengthy Microsoft Word (2003) document crashing. It keeps telling me that there's a problem and then working and working. I have to do a forced shutdown.

I'm using an iBook G4. I'm having a problem with a lengthy Microsoft Word document. It keeps freezing when I try to make a change in it. The computer is working and working. Then I have to use a forced shutdown. And it starts all  over again. Suggestions?

Is there sufficient free space on the iBook's startup disk (typically called Macintosh HD)?  The OS and apps use free space to write temporary files, and it free space becomes too low, it can cause the Mac to bog down.  Low free space also makes whatever free space is left fragment into tiny pieces scatter all over the hard drive, making the problem even worse.  If it more than 90% full, you should free up some space.

  • Pop/Imap retrieving and redistribute in LAN with OsX Server

It's possible to download mail accounts hosted in my isp and redistribut'em in my lan with OsX Server with it's own mail server?
The scope is not to have a local server mail because we have ADSL and sometimes the line broke up...
We prefere have mail hosted more securely in our external isp.
But an internal mail server is a commodity very useful...
Sorry if the questions is answered before...
    Thanks in advance.

  • Help needed with OSX Server 10.5.8

We're running a headless Xserve (RackMac3,1) with OSX Server 10.5.8 that did its job flawlessly.
Now we want to update the Perl software from 5.8.6 to 5.20.0 or newer. After downloading the suitable version from CPAN we tried to install, but get the following msg:
Uh-oh, the C compiler 'cc' doesn't seem to be working.
You need to find a working C compiler.
Either (purchase and) install the C compiler supplied by your OS vendor,
or for a free C compiler try http://gcc.gnu.org/
I cannot continue any further, aborting.
Is there a way to install the missing tools remotely via the command line (SSH)? A step-by-step recipe would be most welcome.
    - Harald -

RackMac3,1 is PPC/G5 processor so you are not going to have an easy time with this. Perl 5.2.20 is bleeding edge (OS X 10.10.3 comes with v5.16.3).
I would leave Apple's installation of Perl, etc. on the server strictly alone and install MacPorts:
         The MacPorts Project -- Home
and work from there. You aren't likely to get a step-by-step recipe because its not an exercise a rational person would chose to spend time on.
Have you considered rewriting whatever features in your code require Perl 5.2.20 than to upgrade your server? Or buy a new server, you could probably pick up a Mini for about $200.

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • Managing a remote unix box with OSX server apps...

Aside from running an OSX server, I am in charge of maintaining an external, SUN unix server from my Mac, and I hate using line commands, esp. with how jaded I've become using the nice tools for managing the Mac server. For now I use terminal in order to change passwords, set permissions and so on as the sudo user on the unix box, and use rbrowser to edit cron jobs.
So, my question is, is there a way to get the OSX server admin tool to think the unix box is an OSX server? And if not, is there a graphical interface to maintain the server (it's running Apache too)? Rbrowser is cool and all, but doesn't let me use sudo for making chnages.
    Thanks for any help.
    Greg

Bummer about not having the Mac feel on SUN. Life can't always be perfect.
As far as the Webmin, no, haven't heard of it, but it sounds cool. The trick would be getting a huge client like SD County to let us buy it, then go through all the hoops and red tape to get it installed. Most likely their answer would be "Well, what have you been using this whole time and why isn't that good enough now all of a sudden?".
So for the time being, I'l have to be happy using RBrowser for file transfers between the test and production servers (beats the pants off of typing scp -p -i over and over again) and editing cron scripts. Too bad it doesn't provide sudo for changing passwords, groups, and so forth.
I'm this close to having the perfect work environment (the office I work in was all Windows with Dell laptops...until now).

    A couple ideas
check our /etc/hosts file, you might have an entry for your domain.
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
do you see any entries for your domain? If so:
edit the file by navigating with the arrow keys, delete the line
with your domain. Hit ctrl-x when done (enter 'y' to save the change)
    Clear your DNS cache
         dscacheutil -flushcache
Try a different DNS server, go into your network settings (In System Preferences)
Go to Ethernet or Wifi (whichever you are using), click Advanced and under the DNS tab enter:
         8.8.8.8
Make sure no entries are ABOVE it.
If none of this works, send the results of these commands:
         cat /etc/hosts
         cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig +short mydomain.com   (replace with your domain)
The results of these should point us in the right direction.

  • Convert Adobe Form (with data) to Microsoft Word Document

    Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Standard
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Microsoft Word 2003 SP3
I am attempting to convert an Adobe PDF Form (with data included) to a Microsoft Word document.
When I use the menu to attempt this, I get a Word document containing only the form fields.
I want to be able to grab all the text from the document, as these forms were used to fill in information for Job Descriptions, and I want to submit the text to job boards (without having to retype anything).
What are my options for obtaining this information?

    Bill:
Thank you for all of your help. I do not have the program in front of me, so I don't have a means of independently verifying this, until I go see the user tomorrow when he returns to the office ...
Just to confirm, a fillable PDF is different from a standard PDF, as it stores the form fields in a special way, likewise, the data is stored in a special way. This is actually a quite useful feature, for compiling data, if you use the form multiple times.
A standard export of a fillable PDF exports only the fields.
To get the data, I would have to choose to save form data.
To get the fields and the data, I have to print it using a PDF printer to create a new PDF document. Once I create this new PDF document, I can then export to Word as desired.
If I want ONLY form fields: (one-step process)
    Export > Microsoft Word > %filename%.DOC
If I want ONLY form data:(one-step process)
File > Save FORM DATA > FDF file format > %filename%.FDF
If I want both the form and the data: (two-step process)
File > Print to PDF > Save as %filename%.PDF
    Open %filename%.PDF > Export > Word Document
Is this the process? Pardon my confusion, but I am a newbie, and I do not have the program to test with.
Thanks for your help, kind sir.

  • Can I use my external hdd with OSX server

Hi i am thinking about using OSX server, but I dont have very much space on the computer I would b running it of of so I would store everything on my 4TB Wd external HDD. Is this posible, and how would I set it up to do that? Also, my external also has some backups from other computers on it and will I loose any of that? I would probably partition it so that 1TB of it has all the servers files and everything.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yep you can use any connected drive for server storage, its under the settings tab called Service Data
No you wouldn't lose anything on the drive (assuming its Mac formatted) but clean partition would be a good idea

  • Help for first install of macpro with osx server

    Hello to all
it's my first message on this forum, i'm seeking for help because i'm kind of new with Mac systems.
    I'm gonna explain the problem
So we are going to buy a mac pro and put 4*2To inside with raid 5 and osx server.
The problem is that the cost of installation of sotwre and deployement etc is really expensive.
I need to create a vpn too, this mac pro is gonna be a storage and multiple users must have acces to it. In fact this mac will be connected on the router and users will acces to it on local network then later we're gonna move from our base so the mac will be at the home of one of us and other users will have to access it from outside.
I was thinking avoyding cost of install by doing it myself.
So i've thinked that the best way to do it is by asking help to the community.
Is anyone can help me with this or tell me where i can find tutorials to do it?
I have skills but this is hard form me. The thing is that i learn fast. But i need help.
Maybe my post is not really clear i write as it comes to me, english is not my langage too.
So feel free to ask me questions or informations if you need.
In the same time i'm reading posts on the foum about this kindof installations.
    Thank u so much
    .anto.

    Dear Marcassin
i am happy to help to your problem .
first i would say you must read the Documentation. and you should familier with Mac Os installation System.
in your Mac Server DVD you will find the schedule sheet . print that and plan your server first. it will really help full. then come and list down the all the requirements.
may be you will need more services after that.
But again again again . read that sheet and fill all the requirements. and come back or read specific captors in the Documentation.
if you want more details about the installing sachira.herath at gmail

I have three computers on which I have installed Outlook 2011.  All three are running Mavericks.  On one of them, a MacBook air, I have established an outlook account connecting to my OSX server with no problems.  On the other two computers when I set the parameters the same way, I cannot establish an outlook account.  When I use Apple Mail on any of the three machines, I am able to establish accounts for iCloud and  the OSX server with no problems.  Can anyone point me to the source of this problem or a method for trouble shooting it?

  • Will Mac Mini with OSX Server 10.6 Snow Leopard be able to fit my needs?

    Hello,
The office i work in is a Mac environment.
Is this unit powerful enough to support 20 people? This is the setup i was thinking:
Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server - 2.66GHz : Dual 500GB:
1st Internal drive - OS only
2nd Internal drive - OS backup via CarbonCopyCloner
Ministack USB drive - Data backup via Time Machine (file shares etc on server from services)
Firewire DroboPro 16TB - Client Time Machine Backups via the Network.
Would the Mac Mini be powerfull enough to support normal OS X Server services, and at the same time act as a client Time-Machine backup via the network?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

The answer to your question depends on how many of the services you intend to offer.
If you are just going to use the Mini as a File, Print, and directory server, then it will work fine.
If you intend it to run as your web, email, database, and iChat server, you might be pushing things a bit much.
Your drive layout looks appropriate for a simple file server, so I would tentatively say yes, it looks like it would do what you currently require.
