File Lost Muse Site

I am sorry if this question seems trivial or dumb but I am new to the world of web design.
My hard drive crashed and I need to recover the website files. I know that with other sites I could just use a program like filezilla and login and copy files from there... I can not seem to do this with the business catalyst website i currently have. Can you please point me in the right direction?

You may use the credentials given on the following page to connect to the Business Catalyst site via FileZilla or any other file client:
Business Catalyst Help | Connect to your site using SFTP
Also, you will not be able to open the HTML files in Muse, since Muse can only read .muse files. You may use any HTML editor to edit the site.

Regardless of being in development or not, "Captain Obvious" is is correct and the working .muse file is lost, meaning that you will have to start again from scratch.
All the BC will contain is the published HTML and support files, not the .muse file which you would require to recover the site design.
Might want to look into Time Machine or another automatic, timed backup source while you work.

Muse crashed, site on Biz Catalyst good, Muse file lost hours of work

The new version of Muse crashed and took the last 6 hours of work with it. The file is stored locally. The version that it live on business catalyst is right, but Muse doesn't have any of it in the Muse file. Is there any way to recover it?

Recover lost adobe muse site

Hi all,
I've been developing a website on my Mac Mini, the mac began running slow so I backed up all the data, reset the mac to factory default and restored from backup. Unfortunately all my files were lost during the restore process and my muse site has now gone too.
I have all of the HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc. files uploaded to my FTP server which I can download but obviously can't use these in muse. Is there any way of converting these files back into a muse file, so I can continue editing the site in muse?

HI Oliver,
Sorry to hear that, but unfortunately it is not possible to recover Muse file fro FTP server. When you publish your site to an FTP server, Muse does not upload the .muse file to the the server, so you will not get it there.
An alternate way could be, scanning your system, using some free recovery software, may be it can help to recover a deleted file.

I do have my latest html files, which were created in Muse... is there a way to import the html into the old Muse site so that I don't lose my recent updates? Please advise. You may need to design the site again in older version OR may be copy and paste in place from new to old except what is new in the latest version.

How do I link to a pdf file from my Muse site?

I'm about to build my first Muse site (and my second site overall) and it's for my cousin who is a college professor. She has several academic papers, reference letters and her CV that she would like to show on her site. Since most of this content only exists as pdf files, I was thinking that I'd show a thumbnail and then have a link to download the full pdf. Is there an easy way to do this in Muse? Yes, very easy: Place a thumbnail picture and link the file to it (link command on top of the window).

While making some edits to my muse site, my mac froze, and I waited for about 10 mins and it was still frozen--so I forced restarted my computer. Upon re-opening the file, I received the message "This Adobe Muse site file is damaged and cannot be open." I was wondering if there is any way to recover the file. I have a very recent HTML export of the site, is there a way to re-import that into a muse file? Or perhaps the file is somehow able to recover? I'm on an iMac that was just bought. It's pretty frustrating because my last backup was from two weeks ago and there have been major updates to the design of the site. At the very least, I have the latest export to copy the layout from, but my site is 50+ pages. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't have good news. The file is truncated. It's shorter than it should be and the missing information isn't something I can manufacture.
From your description of events and looking at the information in your log file we believe you hit a rather obscure weakness in the Mac OS, or perhaps Mac hardware or the hard drives/controllers used. When an application writes to a file and requests the file be flushed to the physical media, two things occur. The first is the data is written to the physical media and the second is a table on contents on the media is updated to indicate the new length of the file. In this case it appears the Save completed successfully as far as Muse could tell (the success is reported in the log), but what probably occurred is either a very low-level OS crash and/or your restart of the computer occurred before the length of the file was updated in the table of contents.
Unfortunately, after some time spent searching online, it doesn't appear as though there are any Mac OSX tools that will re-extend a file without altering the bytes in the newly extended area. Or at least I couldn't find any (and it makes sense for security reasons that the old data wouldn't be there when the file was re-extended). Even if there is such a tool, it's very likely other activity on your machine since the restart has already overwritten those bytes with some other file, so the missing part of the file is now gone.
I'm sorry, but I'm not aware of any way to recover or repair your file.

Kevin is suggesting that you store the projects you create while working through his book in a folder called RoboHelpProjects. It is not where you have to store every project you ever create.That is for the purposes of his book.
RoboHelp initially defaults to My RoboHelp Projects but it's up to you whether you do. Generally on the forums we advise against that as it is part of your profile and can result in excessively long path names in a few cases. Generally where authors create file names that are so long they almost serve as the content.
Projects always have a root folder, call them Project 1 and Project 2 for this purpose. You can have those folders directly off your C drive (or other local partition) or within in a parent folder as above.
Now to what you can and cannot do. You can delete a whole project by selecting Project 1 or Project 2 in Windows Explorer. Obviously if you delete the parent folder you will delete all your projects within.
What you must not do is delete individual files within a project using Windows Explorer, for that you use RoboHelp's Project Manager. The exception is if you go to Tools > Reports there is a report Unused Files. Files listed there will have to be deleted using Windows Explorer for the very good reason they do not appear in Project Manager and, therefore, cannot be deleted that way.
If you think about it, it is similar to Word. There is no option to delete a document there other than using File > Open and right clicking. Not very intuitive.

The thing is, I created a site using Muse last week. Today, I am trying to open it but a message appears saying: <This Adobe Muse site file requires a newer version of Adobe Muse. Please update to the latest version>, but when I try to update the app, creative cloud says Muse is up to date and there is no option to update it. I need to solve this urgently please, I really need this file working today.

If you're part of the Beta program for Muse, this dialog would be displayed if the file was opened and saved using a Prerelease/Beta version of Muse. (Once saved with a newer version of Muse, a file can no longer be opened by the older version(s).) If that isn't your situation, please send us the .muse file at [email protected] (along with a link to this thread for context) so we can investigate further. If the file is larger than 20Mb you can send it using a service such as DropBox, WeTransfer, Adobe SendNow, etc. Thanks.

Adobe Muse Site Post/Broken File Image Links

I posted my Adobe Muse site and it is riddled with broken image file links. The site isn't loading
I was told the broken image files are due to naming the files with "periods" in the file
name. I need to rename each file and replace it in Muse pages. If that is the case
why did the site look fine when I was viewing in Adobe Business Catalyst posting?
I'm super concerned that I may have to rebuild much of the site with new file name
updates to broken image links.
Anyone? Help is appreciated.

Impossible to speculate without the URL for the site, or at minimum an example of the file names in question.
Do you have files named starting with a period? That would be a problem for some hosting providers.

By downloading your files from your website to your computer,
you're simply
copying them from the server's hard drive (where the world
can see your
website) to your local hard drive.

That has no effect
on the files on the server.
You could spend 12 months editing the files locally. Anyone
visiting your
website (i.e. accessing the old files on the server) will
still see the old
files on the server.
To reiterate: the remote files on the server will still be
viewable by
anyone but they'll be the old files.
When you've finished editing locally on your computer at
home/work/laptop,
you then upload your freshly edited files. That's called
updating your
website.
Next time someone views the site, they see the freshly edited
files because
the freshly edited ones (which you just uploaded from your
local computer)
overwrote the old ones on the server.

If you have never coded before and want to add custom code I would suggest going on youtube or finding a good tutorial on the basics of coding. A tutorial on adding this to a Muse site would be pretty imvolved and if you have no clue how to code it might not make any sense to you. Plus if something were to break you would be lost on how to fix it. It's always a good idea to understand the things you do before you get to involved in them.
