File maintenance/management

I've recently converted from PC to Mac. I'm revelling in the new environment but I'm learning that Mac's are not without their frustrations also.
I imported all my photos into the internal hardrive and imported them into IPhoto. It's seems that I must have two copies of the files as the photos must be imported from a location other than the iphoto library. I thought I was clever by deleting the original photos and keeping those in the iphoto library but now iphoto is unable to pick them up. This seems a little silly as at 4mb each it's totally impractical as well as illogical to need two of every photo. Is there a way around this?
I'm having other problems with file maitenance. when I'm sorting through my latest photo rolls, I decide what to keep and what to delete. Is there a way to delete a file in iphoto which will also delete the photo off the hard drive?
Would be very grateful for assistance to overcome these difficulties.

Welcome to the Mac and to the DIscussions
1. There are two major ways that you can file manage in iPhoto. The default method is that the photos are imported into the application and the actual files are copied to the iPhoto Library Folder. Once you are sure that they are safely in iPhoto you can then delete the files fom elsewhere on your hard drive.
2. The second way is to leave the files in your own filing system (go to iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced -> Uncheck Copy Files to iPhoto Library Folder when Importing) There are pluses and minuses to either system and they are discussed all over these discussions.
I don't understand the particular problem that you describe, can you give more detail?
Everything you need to do, edit (either in iPhoto or another app), sort, arrange, tag, export (file -> export or just drag and drop onto the desktop) and so on can be done through the iPhoto window. iPhoto always works on a copy of the file so that the original is preserved and can be returned to (Photos -> Revert To Original).
IF you opt for option one, then moving a photo to the iPhoto trash will remove the photo from the Finder when you empty the iPhoto trash. (This gives you the option to change your mind...)
If you opt for option 2, then you'll have to delete by hand.
hope this helps

  • How to remove the date extensions from a filename in SSIS Flat File Connection Manager dynamically at run time

    Hello,
I have to load data from a csv file to SQL Database. The file is placed into a directory by another program but the file name being same, has different extensions based on time of the day that it is placed in the directory. Since I know the file name
ahead of time, so, I want to strip off the date/time extension from the file name so that I can load the file using Flat File Connection Manager. I am trying to use 'variable' and 'expression editor' so that I can specify the file name dynamically. But I
don't know how to write it correctly. I have a variable 'FileLocation' that holds the folder location where the file will be placed. The file for example:  MyFileName201410231230  (MyFileName always the same, but the date/time will be different)
    Thanks,
    jkrish

I don't want to use ForEach Loop because the files are placed by a FTP process 3 times a day at a specific time, for ex. at 10 AM, 12 PM and 3 PM. These times are pretty much fixed. The file name is same but the extension will have this day time stamp. I
have to load each file only once for a particular reason, meaning I don't want to load the ones I already loaded. I am planning on setting up the SSIS process to load at 10:05, 12:05 and 3:05 daily. The files will be piling up in the folder. As it comes,
I load them. At some point in time, I can remove the old ones so that they won't take up space in the server.  In fact, I don't have to keep the old ones at all since they are saved in a different folder anyways. I can ask the FTP process to
remove the previous one when the new one arrives. So, at any point in time, there will be one file, but that file will have different extensions every time.
I am thinking of removing the extensions before I load every time. If the file name is 'MyFileNamexxxxxxx.csv', then I want to change it to 'MyFileName.csv' and load it.
    Thanks,
    jkrish
You WILL need to use it eventually because you need to iterate over each file.
Renaming is unnecessary as one way or another you will need to put a processed file away.
And having the file with the original extension intact will also help you troubleshoot.

  • File Repository Manager

    Hi all,
I have created a file repository manager.
I have done the following settings for creating a file repository manager:
    Active   :checked
Hide in Root Folder: not checked
    Send Events :checked
Property Search Manager  : not set
    Repository Services   : not set
    ACL Manager Cache   : ca_rsrc_acl
    Security Manager   : W2kSecurityManager
    Description
    Prefix (must start with /) : /demo
    Windows Landscape System   : Microsoft_Windows_KM
    Read-only   : not checked
    Lookup mode : caseless
    Read-only Content Expiry Delay:
    Root Directory:
    132.186.124.207\calender
Even after restarting the server, a folder by name calender is not being created in the root in KM content.
    What could be the reason?
    thanx and regards,
    anuradha.

    Hi Anuradha,
The root in KM Content will have a folder by the name <i>demo</i>(value of property <i>Prefix</i>), not <i>calendar</i>.
BTW I recommend you don't change the prefix to <i>/calendar</i>... as the CalendarRM uses that prefix and so a clash could occur!
    Regards,
    Ashish.

I have a 27" iMac with 16GB of factory installed SDRAM and 1T harddrive.  It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.  How can I adjust so that all files are managed on the harddrive rather than the SDRAM.  (BTW - design flaw here.)
Older Macs with a single Harddrive would simply expand OS management on the drive, and I think I understand the new Fusion Drive to do just that, but how do I get this product that I spent a great deal of money on to be more than a pretty screen?

I was confused by this statement
It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.
OS X manages ram and when you run out, it create swapfiles to extend your ram on the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). The OS itself, takes about 16 gig of space and that too resides on the HDD.  Your 16 gig of RAM is really a temporary space that holds things from the HDD so the processor can work on them.  There is no design flaw between your ram and HDD.  Something else is going on and there are a lot of smart people here to help you figure out what that "something else" is.
I would do three things.  First I would create a backup, backups are important.  Second, I would reboot into recovery and repair my HDD.  Lastly while still booted in recovery I would repair permissions.
Can you capture a screen shot of the exact error you are getting?

  • File maintenance

I use the kludge of making a bogus entry in the beats per second field in order to find deleted files. First off letting us sort on the information field that indicates a missing file would simplify file maintenance, and eliminate that step. That way we don't have to do time consuming modification of first editing the beats field with an addition of a number so we can find the missing files, and then re-editing it to remove the entry.
Second, if you could automatically sense the new file location, like other tools (Real and Media Player) do you would provide a comparable tool.

Please check this out for the former:

How do I file and manage documents?
    New to iPad, very impressed.
I want to stop using a PC and run my small B&amp;B using the iPad and iPhone

The iPad does not include a file management system in the way that a PC does. You may want to think twice about giving up your PC. The iPad is not meant to completely replace a PC.

  • File system management when sharing photos/music with other users in Mac OS

I'm a new convert from the Windows world. I'm trying to setup multiple accounts for each user within my household. However, I'd like us to all share the same set of folders for photos within iPhoto and music in iTunes. Is it best to just used the "shared" folder instead of keeping them in the standard home directory and trying to share those folders with other users? What is the best approach to this. I would imagine most people do this for managing their music if not photos as well. Just trying to learn best practice on the file system management before I copy over gigs of files from my old PC.
    Thanks much,

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. This might help with iPhoto.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.

  • Problem with Maintenance Manager

    Hello,
I have a Lenovo T61 6457-E3G wth Windows XP. The Windows is updated on the last available version, and so the lenovo sofware too.
    Weeks ago, the problem started:
When I shut down the computer the Lenovo task: "AWAYSCH" can't be closed by windows. (So I have to do that on my one by every shut down)
Also the Maintenance Manager can't be started (I pushed the Maintenance-Manager button, but the programm will not start, without a problem description).
    Can some help me?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Refer to this URL: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70681
Seems "AwaySch.exe" does not support most T61s with Intel GM965 video chipsets. This could explain why the application will not launch.

  • Firefox file type management [SOLVED]

I am having some trouble with Firefox handling file downloads. There are two parts to my problem.
First, when I click on a file type that I've never handled before, I get the standard download/save dialog. In the dialog I see no default applications, probably because I'm not using GNOME, so I select "Open with...", browse to the desired application, and click "automatically do this..." When I check Edit->Preferences->Content->Manage File Types, I see an entry for the file type I downloaded. However, the next time I encounter that file type, it does not automatically open it with the desired program nor does it even populate the "Open with..." field so I can just click OK. In short, the problem seems to be that Firefox ignores its own file type database. To try to solve the problem, I have deleted mimeTypes.rdf and I have created a completely new profile, but yet I still have this problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get Firefox to respect its file type management settings?
A second more general question involves how I might get the default application part working. I have tried installing libgnome and gnome-mime-types to get Firefox to pick something up, but with no success. The other option I've seen mentioned is having a mailcap file, but I can't find a good way to get a decent mailcap file set up in Arch. I also noticed the xdg-utils package, but I don't know if this can be integrated with Firefox.
Edit: OK, actually I noticed the libgnome partially seems to be working. After restarting my session, I noticed that now there are more MIME types in the file management setup. Unfortunately, it seems that trying to open one of the installed types still doesn't work.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    j
Edit (6/1/2008): I updated to use Firefox 3 RC1 and it all magically works!

Well, I've been having the very same problem here as well, but with thunderbird (not in firefox)... In the past, but also now with kde 4.2.2 / kdemod.
The associations list is always empty and the default associations are definitely not KDE's ones (seem gnomish though gnome is not installed).
In firefox, I can see my kde apps in the list...

  • Feature Request // Book Module: Export as indd file and management

Book Module: Export as indd file and management
I would like to request a feature to export a book module as indd file.
I like PDF's but .indd is nice also so we are able to to more in depth layouts.
Having Lightoom being able to manage all your pictures and book layouts would be nice, alot of things can be done in one application.
Another Feature:  Using Lightoom as book layout management.
Being able to send a page(s) of the book from lightroom into InDesign to do indepth layout and editing, then being able to send it back into lightroom
Almost similar to how you can send a photo from LR in Photoshop to do indepth editing and then send it back into lightroom.
This could and will ease the workflow of book management and layout design.  So lightroom will not only be able to manage photos, but also indesign and book layouts.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4238530#4238530

Why do repeat it here, as you have already filed a feature request for it?
BTW AFAIK this is already implemented: you can use Adobe Illustrator or InDesign or Opensource Scribus to edit layouts.
They are just not ready to publish how - another sign of the quality processes at Adobe.
But you do not send from the book module.
You create upfront layout templates, which you can import for use inside LR book module.
    This is a one-way street.
The book module designers did not acknowledge a use case where you might want to fiddle the exact placement of really chosen images.
It is always you first design a template, then use it.
Love it or leave it - *change it* is not an option that Adobe seems to give to their beta testers.

  • File Open Manager

I have installed the latest Adobe Reader X (version 10.1.3).  When I open the application I get an error "File Open Manager service not running" and "Plug-in will not be loaded".  I have tried repair (no change).  I have tried to restart the service (no success). I am running Windows XP Professional.

Do you have any 3rd party plugin by the name of File Open Manager installed on your system?
If so, then it seems like the same is not compatible with Reader 10.1.3 which is causing the issue at your end. You may need to contact the plug-in support staff to get some more help regarding the same.
As of now, please remove the plug-in from your system by navigating to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs ion order to be able to launch Reader successfully.

  • Delta Maintenance & Management...

    Dear All,
I have about 10 to 12 Process Chains for different "Application Components" that run on daily basis early in the mornings. I have following questions regarding the "Delta Maintenance & Management":
    1. How to fetch a request which has not been successfully fetched by "Process Chain" Delta InfoPackage and therefore, have not loaded into the Data Target?
    2. How to manage and maintain different Process Chain that runs on daily basis?
    3. What are the key points while repairing a failed request; which has not been fetched by Process Chain?
    4. Are there certain steps/points which need to be taken care of during the "Delta Maintenance & Management"?
    5. How the Process Chain checked or what should be done on daily basis for the checking and maintenance of process chain?
    6. Can we add another process into existing Process Chain without any trouble?
I will appreciate your quick responses!
    Many Thanks!!!
    Tariq Ashraf

    Hi Ashraf,
    1. How to fetch a request which has not been successfully fetched by "Process Chain" Delta InfoPackage and therefore, have not loaded into the Data Target?
U can run a repair request to fetch the missing data.you should have a tab on safety intervals if the missing is daily scenario.
    2. How to manage and maintain different Process Chain that runs on daily basis?
Maintain every thing under master chain based on transaction data and master data.
Run your attribute chain run at once for all your master data
    3. What are the key points while repairing a failed request; which has not been fetched by Process Chain?
Check why the chain is failing reasons of lock or table space issues etc,Identify and fix the issues for
delaying the process if two chains are causing the lock
    4. Are there certain steps/points which need to be taken care of during the "Delta Maintenance & Management"?
There are many docs on google for each scenario

    5. How the Process Chain checked or what should be done on daily basis for the checking and maintenance of process chain?
Every day checking is not required. If the process is running from many days identify the long going issues and fix it.
    6. Can we add another process into existing Process Chain without any trouble?
Yes you can add.say the data is loading in to three cubes from same dso with different selections and you want to add a new cube and load the data with different selection from same dso u can do it with out any issues.
    Thanks,

  • Leopard File Maintenance

Does Leopard carry out some form of file maintenance that might be similar to PC commands such as defrag?
If so, are such routines automated requiring no user input, or are user commands required?
Assuming no Mac Leopard particular knowledge, what if anything should I be doing on a regular basis to ensure my files remain healthy and my MBP does not become sluggish and fat due to bloated and fragmented files?
As always, thanks for your advice!

OS X automatically defrags files under 20 MBs in size. There's virtually no need to do any disk defragmentation.
Files only become "bloated" if you keep adding to them and making them larger. They don't "bloat" on their own.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at www.versiontracker.com and www.macupdate.com.
Others may remark that since Tiger the Unix maintenance scripts run automatically regardless of whether the computer has been asleep or shut down. Although this is true under some circumstances it is not altogether correct. The following is an excerpt from the XLab's FAQ on the topic:
"How the timer used by launchd handles sleep time has led many to believe that they no longer need to run the maintenance scripts, and that the scripts are run automatically if the Mac was asleep or shutdown at the scheduled time, ala third-party utilities such as Anacron. However, this is untrue.
While it may appear that launchd executes the maintenance scripts "on the fly" if the computer is asleep or shutdown at the appointed time, this is a side effect of how the timer treats time the computer has spent in sleep mode. The timer used by launchd does not count sleep time. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time at which a given script is supposed to run, the script may run later that day, at a time shifted by the amount of time the Mac was asleep. However, if you restart your Mac before the time-shifted execution time, pending events are lost and the script will not run off-schedule: the next chance for the script to run will be at its regularly scheduled time.
If you regularly restart your Mac and the computer regularly sleeps or is shutdown at the scheduled times, it's possible that the scripts will never run, hence one should still run them manually, say on a weekly basis.
The sleep time shift is also cumulative. For example, if you don't restart your Mac for weeks or months at a time, but let it sleep when not in use, this can result in:
The daily script running once every few days or never.
The weekly script once every few weeks or never.
The monthly script once every few months or never.
The time shift in each case is the total amount of time the Mac has spent in sleep since its last restart. If you have a process that writes heavily to the logs, you can wind up devoting good hard disk space to the log files."
