File management advice for iphoto avoiding space issues

I've just returned form a full OS crash and want to rethink my workflow approach.
I have about 50Gb of RAW & Jpeg files to re import. This will not rise more than 20% over the year. Before switching from PC to MBP I used Adobe Bridge/CS for file mgt & editing. But on switching to Macs last yr I got soon sucked in by the simplicity of iphoto. Sure, it's toy like but it's **** food at what it does and if you're just intermediate dslr snapper like me with limited time, it's okay.
BUT before I go back to it, and quickly run out of space - can someone advise on best workflow/storage option considering I don't want to invest in Aperture or others.
So what shall I do?
1) Keep my entire collection on on an external drive (with additional DVD backup for safety) and keep another smaller library of recent stuff on the MBPro (thus using 2 libraries with Library Mgr http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/). Is this safe? Any issues or guidance?
OR
2) Use Adobe Bridge to manage raw files and only import the final jpegs into iphoto for browsing showcasing etc. This would help keep the duplicates down in iphoto
Any ideas welcome.

James
I would go for option one - multiple libraries managed with iPhoto Library Manager. IPLM will also help you move files between libraries. I see no safety issues. I can see no advantage to using iPhoto for one set up and Bridge for the other. I always think you should keep things simple.

  • File managing between Pictures, iPhoto, iPhoto library

I am doing a clean-up of my hard drive, trying to get rid of duplicate files. My only issue is the photos. I have 3 places where photos seem to reside and each takes up a large amount of space. I would like to delete what I can, but I don't know the relationship between each file and don't want to lose any pictures or picture files. The three are:
    Pictures (file) - 77.3 GB
iPhoto (when I open iPhoto, these are the numbers/memory listed) - 43.9 GB, 11,558 photos, 582 movies
    iPhoto Library - 18.7 GB
Where should I go to start the clean-up/duplicate annihilation? It makes me nervous to start but I have run out of room on my Mac and would like to clean everything up before buying a new hard drive or new external.
    Thanks,
    Trevor

    Hi,
I've been watermarking my photos using the BorderFX extension for iPhoto.  However I cannot figure out how to change the title when I export the photo through BorderFX.  I've been creating new folders with the title but would like to be able to rename the actual file.
Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how?

  • As I was cleaning up my mac, I accidentally deleted some files obviously vital for iPhoto. I want to download the new version, but am not sure I can access my photos. Should I download the new version or restore the old one somehow?

I know the files were vital to iPhoto because I can't open it now. Can you restore these files?

Probablhy not unless you know exactly what needs to be restored
You need to restore the entire library from your backup before these files were deleted - it is not adviseable to upgrade the iPhoto application until you resolve your iphoto library problem
In the future always remember the number one rule of iPhoto - NEVER make and changes of any sort to the structrue or content of the iPhoto library

  • File management questions with iPhoto 8

I am new to iPhoto, not just version 8. I need to understand a few basics about the Apple way of handling photos. First off let me say that I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP desktop pc. I just set up an external harddrive as my storage space for my photos. They were on my pc, but I want to take advantage of iPhoto and manage them via my mac laptop. So I formatted the external drive as a mac drive, purchased a copy of MacDrive so that my pc can read/write to this drive as well and transferred all of my photos to the external harddrive. 14 gigs. I suppose I should now delete them off my pc...
Before I moved my photos, I organized them all into appropriate folders, consolidating them and removing any duplicates that occured sometimes when I accidentally re-imported the same photos from my camera.
I imported the photos on my external harddrive into iPhoto's photo library, using the alias approach instead of having iPhoto make copies of the photos. (I don't need to waste yet another 14 gigs!) So now I have numerous Events, most of which relate directly to the folders I created for my photos. I noticed however that in some instances, iPhoto created multiple events for photos within the same folder.
    Here are my questions...
If I merge events in iPhoto, I noticed my folders do not change. Am I just messing around with the aliases, sorta like creating playlists in iTunes? Is there any way to keep things in sync between my folders and my events, so that the contents of my folders match the contents of my events, or is this unwise or unnecessary?
If after I have imported my photos into iPhoto, what happens when I merge my folders of photos on my harddrive, outside of iPhoto? Does iPhoto keep up or do I have to somehow update my iPhoto library? Refresh it? What happens when I add more photos, say with my pc? Do I have to import the new folders of photos into iPhoto each time?
I also have a question about keywords. From the demo movie I watched on apple.com, I saw that one can search for photos using keywords. In the demo, the presenter typed the name of a person and all the pictures of that person appeared. If I want to do this, does this mean I have to add for example the keyword "David" to every picture David is in? Can the name simply appear in the title for the photo and still get picked up within the search results? Is there an easy way to assign keywords to multiple photos at the same time?
Thanks for helping me start out on the right foot!
    Paul

    Dani:
You don't have to duplicate photos when using iPhoto in it normal, copy to library, mode. Once you import the files you can delete the ones used to import. However, if you're a professional then you've probably read the DAM book, Digital Asset Management, and it implies multiple backup copies.
Files imported in the alias mode retain the color profile that was added by the camera. If you edit in iPhoto then the resulting modified will will have a default profile. In my case the profile went from sRGB IEC1966-2.1 to Camera RGB Profile. But if you use Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto you can manage the profile with it.
I like iPhoto 7 much more than 6. It's editing capabilities are much improved but still no match for PS. It also writes the metadata, comments, keywords and title to the file when exporting. It also allows you to modify the EXIF Capture Date and write it to the original file.
As with any application you must have backups and backups. Also always keep a minimum of 10 GB free space, 15 or more if you'll be doing some heavy editing with PS or work with video. That's important. So that means an external FW hard drive or two for redundancy backups. That is if you're serious about it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Best strategy for iPhoto Disk space problems

My wife is a shutter bug. She has about 20000+ pictures and growing fast. She also has an HD camera.
So, disk space is an issue for us (500G iMac)
Current iPhoto library is big (190G) and growing fast.
What is the best solution to solve the out "iphoto library disk space problem"?
    1. Get a really good USB drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
    2. Get a NAS drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
    3. Split the libraries and remote the old ones and keep the new one local?
    4. Another option that I am not aware of?
I tried some tests on a nice NAS solution (Netgear ReeadyNAS Ultra) and iPhoto seems to run really slowly from the mounted NAS drive.
    Any recommendations appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    1. Get a really good USB drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
This is the best option - be sure that the EHD is always available prior to launching iPhoto
    2. Get a NAS drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
This will not work unless you find a NAS that uses Mac OS Extended (journaled) formatting or you make a formatting or you make a disk image and place it on the NAS
    3. Split the libraries and remote the old ones and keep the new one local?
works but loses much of the power of iPhoto's search capability
    4. Another option that I am not aware of?
get a bigger hard drive in your Mac

Please check who enable trace. Please see:
How to audit users who enabled traces?
    check concurrent programs first

*F11, then select the trace, then Ctrl+F11
    Concurrent > program > define
open the form, press F11 (query mode), select the trace, then (ctrl + f11) this should return all concurrent programs which have trace enabled

  • Wish list for managing photos in iPhoto

Looking at the number of posts on the topic, it is obvious that there is lot to be enhanced in the way iPhoto manages your photo library and files. So in order to make it as straight forward a possible, this post is aimed at debating what the requirements should be.
    So here are my thoughts:
    1) We should be allowed to import and store the photos in the target directory of our choice.
-> The target folder should be prompted at each IMPORT process.
    2) We should be able to move the photos to new folders (after initial import).
-> This should allow photo management between iPhoto and Finder to be consistent.
    3) When making modifications to a picture via iPhoto (crop, effect, ...), the modified file should replace the original one in the same directory (as it already does in the iPhoto library).
-> of course the original file should be saved/archived in a separate folder (in a folder on the user's choice)
Overall, the two main requirements (for me) are:
-> Keep photos files organized based on the desired output (already the case in iPhoto library where the photo shown is always the modified one)
-> Keep consistent file management in both iPhoto and Finder (to avoid having the photos you actually want to keep in separate folders)
Please feel free to comment, validate, brainstorm; hopefully the Apple developers will keep an eye on this discussion and include these comments in the next iPhoto release/patch....
    -- Sebastien --

    Sebastien
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1) We should be allowed to import and store the photos in the target directory of our choice.
-> The target folder should be prompted at each IMPORT process.
You can now store photos in the target directory of your choice. If you want file manage, this is easily done. I see no advantage to iPhoto is doing that for you. The Mac has a file manager, called the Finder, why would it want another one?
    2) We should be able to move the photos to new folders (after initial import).
You can. Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
-> This should allow photo management between iPhoto and Finder to be consistent.
Um, that would make iPhoto into, well, an image viewer. There are many for the Mac, search on MacUpdate. The point of iPhoto is that it's a photo organiser, not a file organiser. You seem to be confusing the Finder and iPhoto again.
    3) When making modifications to a picture via iPhoto (crop, effect, ...), the modified file should replace the original one in the same directory (as it already does in the iPhoto library).
Why on earth would it do that? What would it achieve?
-> Keep photos files organized based on the desired output (already the case in iPhoto library where the photo shown is always the modified one)
But it does - go File -> Export and that's exactly what you'll get.
-> Keep consistent file management in both iPhoto and Finder (to avoid having the photos you actually want to keep in separate folders)
No, really? Are you seriously saying that for every Album there should be a corresponding folder of images? Think of the wasted disk space. Again, if you want to do that, by all means organise your folders yourself and use an image viewer.
The point and purpose of iPhoto is that you arrange things based on the pictures themselves, not their files. Basing things on the organisation of the files is redundant, as it's covered by the Finder, and your focus on trying to match the photo arrangement with the file arrangement is far too limiting, and also, redundant.
Finally, this is a User to User forum, the Apple Developers do not promise to read anything there.

  • Looking for a file manager with copy queue

    Hey,
I'm looking for a file manager with a file-copy-queue feature.
It is useful when browsing mounted samba shares, and you find something you want to copy.
You'll then start copying the files, and then spot another useful folder. You start copying that as well
and suddenly you got 5 different file copies processing at the same time, which decreases the copy speed.
I also miss the feature when transfering files from my external harddrives.
If there is a lot of FM's with this feature, I prefer one without kde-dependencies, as I am using xfce.

Ranguvar wrote:If MC really does have that as a feature, it's once again proved itself _the_ graphical (sorta) file manager.
    sorry for misinformed.
mc has a background job option while copying, it is not exactly a queue like functionality, but simulating to be a queue, and you can stop/resume a background job.

  • Audacious File Manager Problem

    Hi there,
Audacious file manager thinks himself. Opened automatic file Audacious.
    How to solve ?
    Thanks.

I can make a pretty good guess what the problem is.  Some program is blindly picking Audacious as the default MIME handler for inode/directory, most likely because it starts with "A".  Lots has already been said about this issue (try searching Google for "audacious file manager").  For now, you have to set the default MIME handler to something else manually.  See: http://redmine.audacious-media-player.o … 102#note-3

  • EMET 5 StackPivot incompatible with 7-zip File Manager 7zFM.exe ?

    Can anyone reproduce this issue?
With StackPivot mitigation enabled for 7zFM.exe we can't open the 7-zip File Manager.
We can produce the issue with Windows 7 x86, using EMET 5.0.5324.31804 and 7-Zip 9.20
There is no EMET notification via the taskbar agent or the Event Log. However, simply unchecking StackPivot for 7zFM.exe allows it to work.
Application log does contain Event ID 1000, fauling application name 7zFM.exe, faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll

Yes I can reproduce this issue. I wrote about my findings in an earlier post:

Later on I also found out that stackpivot was the culprit but I never posted it on that thread or created a feedback item om the EMET feedback portal.

  • OWB Flat File Management

    Hello,
Right now we are using OWB 10g R1. In this we created some mappings to get get data from flat files to Oracle database. After that we created Process Flows to execute these mappings. In this process flows we needed lot of file management. For this we wrote shell scripts. Ex: Flat files created with different names. But in mappings we use source name as fixed. For this we changed Flat file name to fixed name which we used in mapping. Then sending this name to process flows. Sending original falt file to Archieve. All this is done by writing shell scripts.
Here my question is there any good file management or file handler in OWB 10g R2 ? If any body familiar with this please guide me or tell the documents where can I find about file management in process flows? I hope you guys understand my question. If not please let me know.
