File manager - search app

Can anyone recommend a file manager for the Playbook that I can buy? Also is there an app for searching within files on the PB, not just the file names (ie searchable PDFs, Word files etc) like Windows search and X1? Thanks

Take Files & Folders (see sig) for a spin. Can search filenames, but not inside files.

  • File Manager Pro app --- WIFI won't connect to PC

The File Manager Pro (free) app won't let me connect to my home network URL.  I am trying to download files from PC to iPad.

In the iPad app (File Manager Pro), it recognizes the Router with the unique iPad address 192.168.1.13 and gives the instruction to go to your PC (in my home on the same router) and in your browser, type in http://192.168.1.13 to link the iPad with my PC.  I am trying to do so in order to copy files from my PC to my iPad without a cable or without using iTunes.  File Manager refers to this as a WIFI link using the address of your local router (in my home).
I really like all the features of File Manager Pro and believe that the above is how I am able to exchange files.

  • Some videos are semi-missing - they do not show up in File Manager apps or another app

I have what I will call three FILER apps: File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander.  I also have MovieSRTPlayer.  Those apps appear to not register the presence of some video files that I have definitely copied to my PB.  The MovieSRTPlayer will overlay a .srt file's text over a video allowing the pb to show subtitles.  It works as long as it can find the video and srt files.
I am definitely transferring a series of video files to the pb's video folder.  I am also transferring a companion file to that folder.  The companion file is a subtitle file in the form of an .SRT file.
THREE file manager type apps do NOT show those files as present in the video folder.  The Video app itself does show and play those video files.
I have copied the files using both wifi-sharing and when they did not show up that way, I copied them using the usb cable to the pb's Z: drive and the video folder.
As stated the dam! files play in the video app.  But they do not appear in the various filer apps.  And they also do not show in another app, one that will display the subtitle (.srt file) file overlaying the video.  In all instances it is as if the pb does not register the presence of those files on the pb.
Now, what is interesting is that when this first cropped up, 7 files were missing - just a mix of video (no .srt files involved).  That is they showed in the video app and played but the filer programs did not show them.  I managed last night and this morning to get 7 of those to finally show by copying/moving/deleting and recopying.  But now I'm running into this brick wall again.  I have repeatedly copied two video (avi files) and their companion .srt files to the video folder.  They are in that folder (I've looked using usb and wifi-sharing) and they play in the PB's video app.  They are most certainly on my pb.
Oh, and yes, I've rebooted a number of times.
    Ideas?

I have what I call 3 file manager apps.  File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander (the older free version).
They all show or don't show the same thing.  So files are missing.  And SIZE is not the sole determining factor.  When I was testing MovieSRT and "lost" some files I copied and renamed avi and .srt files.  So there are two extra .srt files in the Video folder.  But while they are 32kb (kilobytes) and 58kb respectively, they do NOT show up in the File managers.  The other two identical files with the names matching the .avi files do show up.  The one very large mp4 (2gb) does not show up.  A subfolder I created just as a test does not show up.  But the large mp4 and subfolder were showing up while I was actively copying the 2gb file - they would show up as the file was being copied - the filemanagers showed the file getting larger and larger and while doing so the "missing" subfolder also kept showing up.  Then once the large file was completely copied, both it and the subfolder "disappeared" - again, the large mp4 does show in the Video app and it plays.
My persistence probably is based on the fact I was a computer programmer many eons ago!  Also, I was trying to get YOUR app to work and the avi files were not showing up in your listing but they were showing and playing in Video app (but no subtitles).  Finally, after copying/moving/re-copying over and over including moving and copying to the PB's Print folder (just since it was empty) and copying it back to the video folder (now 2 copies), the files would finally show up.  Peculiar - yup!
Oh, one other thing - the 3 file managers all show what I will call the virtual Playbook-Demo video in their listings - your app does NOT show it.  Obviously, it is not located in the Video Folder but somewhere in the bowels of the PB.  So, the filemanagers  are relying on some "file structure" that is not fully correct.  But your app does not appear to show it.

  • Searching for a good file manager

I'm searching for a good file manager. Konqueror 3.5 is quite good, dolphin 4.1 and konqueror 4.1 are not. Since konqueror 3.5 is going to die due to lack of support in the future, I kind of need to find a new good file manager...
Do there exist file managers with the following features?
Many of these features are things I thought were quite logical to be in a file manager, but seem to be missing in most "modern" ones...
-independent of any desktop (gnome or KDE), just a standalone program
-preferably not being both a web browser and file manager in once, at least not in an annoying way. Konqueror 3.5 shows that being that combination is possible without being annoying.
-ability to have a tree view of the folders on one side and list view showing the files and subfolders of the folder currently selected in the tree on the other side
-detailed list view showing at least filename, type, date and size, and the ability to sort according to any of these properties
-a non-detailed view showing image contents would also be nice, to browse folders of photos or other images
-ability to open files in certain programs if you doubleclick the file, NOT open it by singleclicking, singleclicking may only select it
-ability to select multiple files by dragging box around files or using keys like "ctrl" and "shift"
-ability to do "open terminal here" or type terminal commands in the current open directory
-must have ability to drag files from one folder to another, from list view to tree view and vica versa, to move or copy them
-and must have ability to use "ctrl+c" and "ctrl+v" to copy files and foldes from here to there
-multiple tabs is a huge plus
-favorites (to local folder paths) is also a huge plus
-preview of files when hovering the mouse over them is nice
-must have ability to zip and unzip (or other compression formats) folders by just right clicking them and choosing a zip/unzip command there
-in addition to that, must also have ability to browse through a zip file as you would through a normal directory, and drag files from the insides of the zip file to the tree view to automatically unzip those files there, and of course "ctrl+c"/"ctrl+v" should also work to copy a file from the inside of the zip file, to some other folder on your disk
-no horizontal autoscrolling in the tree view, that is an invention straight from the abyss...

I know exactly how you feel about KDE 4 vs. 3 -- Konqueror was the best part of KDE for me (pretty much the only part I ever used, actually; my window manager is a slightly modified version of WMII and I generally loathe "desktop environments"). KDE 4 ruined it, completely and utterly.
I submitted about 20 different bug reports about Konqeuror 4, mostly features that they'd deleted or mangled; some of them are starting to be addressed now. I don't think they'll ever fix the speed issues though, because those are dependent on the underlying KDE 4 libraries as far as I can tell -- it's as if KDE 4 were purposely and deliberately designed to be slower than KDE 3. Even if they fix all of its deficiencies, that'll probably keep me from using it...
Right now there's KDEmod, which will hopefully maintain its KDE 3 branch for a while longer. It's starting to show some problems, though; I haven't been able to get kdemod konqueror 3 to work fully out of the box (the settings pages are all blank). On my main machine, I somehow managed to hack together some of the KDEmod3 packages so that I have a functional konqueror 3 running alongside the Arch repository's version of KDE4. I'm afraid to pacman -Syu now, though, because it will probably break horribly :P
I don't remember exactly how I got konqueror 3 going like that, as I did it in my initial fit of rage after I did the pacman -Syu that got me KDE4 (a decision I have regretted ever since), but it was something like this:
    1. move /opt to /opt.kde4
    2. make a new /opt
    3. download several KDE 3 packages from the KDEmod3 repositories manually
    4. extract those packages into the new /opt with tar -xzf (NOT pacman!)
    5. try /opt/kde/bin/konqueror
    6. read reams of error messages about missing libraries, segfaults, etc.
    7. try to supply the missing libraries by downloading other kdemod3 packages and manually extracting them
    8. goto 5
Then, when everything worked (sort of), I renamed some stuff so that 'konqueror' is konqueror 4 (I think having it konqueror 3 broke something else, but I don't remember what), and konqueror 3 is called 'k3nqueror'.
If KDEmod3 ever goes away and there's no other good replacement file manager by then, I'll probably take the source code of KDE3 and try to make a standalone version of konqueror out of it. (Which will probably be quite a project because of how interdependent all the KDE components are.)
Some features I "need" in a file manager, besides the ones you mentioned:
    - Konqueror's tree view (where you can expand folder branches in the file list)
    - Infinite view splitting -- I frequently have my konqueror windows split into 4, sometimes as many as 6 or 7 view panes. Very useful for sorting out files.
    - Selection rectangles are sensitive only over files -- I find full-row-select really annoying, because there are no guaranteed "blank" areas that you can click on to clear a selection. I also use this behaviour to grab long-named files that are interspersed with short ones, because they hilight first when the rectangle touches them (you wouldn't think this very useful, but surprisingly often you do want to do something to all the long-named files...)
    - Right-clicking on a folder and clicking "Paste" pastes into that folder, not the current one -- you'd be amazed at how many file managers get this wrong. I shouldn't have to cd into a folder just to paste some files there.

  • How To Set Third Party Media App Is Default When Launched From Default File Manager

I use rock media player, which can encode & decode The Video and audio files i use, unlike the phone i have, i don't receive the option to set the app as the default media player. I would really like to be able to use this app on the thrive as it is some much a better media player than the thrives defaulty app. Rock player is the name of the app, who do set it as the default player when launched from the default file manager.

From my experience playing with the Thrive, when you attempt to watch a media file, it will open a menu asking you what application to use. From that popup, you can set a default.

  • File Manager App

I downloaded the app called "File Manager" from the Market because I've heard it's much easier/faster to use to move files between my SD card and phone memory this way than to hook the phone up to my PC. Thing is, I'm having the damndest time figuring it out. I can't figure out where to begin, like what icons represent the phone memory and which ones for the SD card. If anyone with some knowledge/experience regarding this app can help me out, that'd be great.   I feel like an idiot not being able to figure out an app that many have told me is very simple, lol.

I like Andexplore and Astro.  They have labels like /SDCARD and /EMMC ok so /EMMC is a little tougher to figure out but it is the internal memory SDCARD is self explanitory.  In Andexplore you long press on a file click menu copy paste  and copy or cut depending on whether you want to move or copy then you select the file then go to the destination and press menu and select paste and it will move the selected files for you.  In Astro I believe you long press and you can select a few then go to a destination and select move and it will move the files you selected to the destination folder.  I think you can also do that with copy.

  • Is there a file manager app that does NOT connect to the cloud?

I need a file manager that will allow people to open, read and save files from various traditional sofrware such as PDF, .DOC, .XLS, etc.  It CANNOT have cloud capabilities but only be local on their personal ipad.  Does anyone know of such an app (that's free or of very minimal cost)?
    Thanks!

Perhaps GoodReader would work for you. If you need your users to be able to edit Office files, then you'll have to look into one of that type of app and most if not all have some sort of cloud capabilities.
    Regards.

  • File Manager App? Does it work properly???

Has anyone already download this app?  Works fine?

The new File Manager app (by Acaras, I believe) works just fine and is well worth 5 dollars. Great to see that holes in the Playbook experience are gradually being filled.
This takes care of a huge issue for the Playbook being able to justify a claim to being a business tablet. Now we can organize many documents (word, excel, powerpoint, pdf) into folders or categories, browse by those categories and open them accordingly. Once a document is in a folder, when you work on it and save it, it remains in that folder. I tried opening a new document, however, and there is no apparent way to control where it saves into.
I mentioned a related issue some weeks ago, that there didn't seem to be a way to synchronize documents between Playbook and the computer. DataViz invented this type of function in the days of Palm, so a mystery why it wasn't developed for Playbook. However, I have found that I can synchronize using an application on the computer, I have used GoodSync to synch between laptop and desktop for several years. So this application detects whatever changes you have made to a document on Playbook and updates the same document on your computer. You can set up a wifi link (discussed in other posts on the forum) and this is a very simple operation.
The only problem I can see here is that you can't easily list a number of documents in different folders on your computer to synch to your Playbook (the way Documents to Go would do on my Palm), or if you really wanted to do that with GoodSync it seems quite cumbersom. Instead, I have to set up a few folders (eg. Working Folder, Current Reading) where I place current documents that I know I may be using on the Playbook. I tried using a shortcut instead of the original document to place in that folder, but it doesn't work. Anyway, this solution is still pretty helpful. The main documents you're working on currently go into this working folder, and then when you want to save them into their respective folder (eg,. for a given project or topic) you just go and transfer it manually to that folder.

  • Why no icloud file manager app?

Why is there no dedicated iCloud file manager app?
Given iCloud files are now shared between apps, it makes sense to be able to view and manage iCloud files in one place, like drop box.
Seems  an ideologically driven oversight and a poor decision

    rne66 wrote:

Because there is no need for one, you can access any document you want that is supported by an app through the app. There's no need to access documents you don't have apps to open.

  • [solved] [Cinnamon] Search function in nemo file manager

    Hello,
Is it possible to have a search function in Nemo which is the default file manager for Cinnamon?
I saw it in Linux Mint, so somehow it must work.
    Regards
    EDIT:
Well, there is already a default search function. I was just using files file manager instead of nemo but thought it was nemo. Remember to install tracker as well to make use of the search.

  • Transfer media to iPod w/ simply file manager app (e.g., Windows Explorer)

I like my iPod. But I wish I could sync/transfer media (songs and video) onto it without having to use special sync/management software (e.g., iTunes, Songbird, Banshee) to do so.
I wish I could use just a regular file management application such as "Windows Explorer" or Nautilus.
Is there a way to hack the iPod to make it do what I wish?

Is there a way to hack the iPod to make it do what I wish?
iTunes gives the music odd file names and the iPod reads the music via these file names. Using Windows won't create the file structure hence no ability for the iPod to read and play the music.
I believe some software such as Sharepod might do what you want.

  • Thunar as default file manager for firefox

    i am using xubuntu 9.04..
I'm using Openbox as windows manager[pure openbox session], it's working great, but i have a problem ...
open containing folder doestnt recognize Thunar as my only file manager, it keeps asking to open with...
    how can fix this problem?
    thank you in advance

I am having a similiar issue... when I hit open folder it pops up sometype of file search program
EDIT: Perhaps this works for you... for some reason it doesn't for me...
    http://rubylution.ping.de/articles/2007 … nder-linux
Basically navigate to about:config and create the following three:
    network.protocol-handler.expose.file = true (Boolean)
    network.protocol-handler.external.file = true (Boolean)
    network.protocol-handler.app.file = /usr/bin/thunar (String)
The program that runs instead of thunar has a title "Find Files" -- I did a quick search of installed programs related to "search" and I only have catfish installed and I know that is not the program... How would I go about determing what this application is or what it is a part of? Is there a way I can click on the program and it output the PID so I can then match it up with the entry in top/htop?
SOLVED : figured it out... it was pcmanfm search program... for some reason it was not opening the folder but instead opening its search program... removing pcmanfm from my system fixed it and now folders are properly opening with thunar

  • File manager

nokia should provide file manager for lumia series.The containts downloaded within the apps. are only visible within the apps...they are not even visible with zune..this is the major disadvantage..

not sure that the file manager really matters in wp8.
if you want a standard office doc, you launch office and any documents that are compatible will show there and you search similar to a file manager
if it is a pdf/adobe file, then you just launch pdf reader and all pdf docs on your device are there.
wp8 is not compatible with zune, so just connect your device vi usb and you can see all the files on your device that are transferred or saved to the device.
just like iOS, you only have access to the main ram file system through developing applications. so at least, unlike iOS, you do not have to pay the 4.99 to get a application that "Acts" like a file manager.
I think that having to use zune is a disadvantage because if you are somewhere and want to share files, and they do not have zune, you are SOL, whereas, now you just have to have the usb cable and you can transfer anything from your device that has been saved to it.
    hope that helps.
