File manager -  spuriously opening folders ?

Since upgrading to DW CS - I've generally pleased with it.
But I have
noticed a little quirk which is annoying.
In the file manager - when closing a folder by clicking on
the square
box with minus sign which becomes + - like many other
programs - quite
often and with no easily detected pattern, another folder
below which
had been closed, now opens to show the files contained within
it.
have I described it ok ?
Anyone else noticed this ? - is it a known bug - is it worth
reporting
to Adobe ?

search on
http://groups.google.com for:
dreamweaver+alan+expanded+registry
There's a registry setting in the site def info for what
folders to show
expanded when a site is opened.
alternate probable fix- make a new site definition from
scratch.
probably way to prevent this from recurring- close the
folders when changing
sites or shutting dw down.
repost of old info- modify the folder location/registry key
name as needed
for the version you are using
Summary of the solution:
It's a registry thing. so do the usual backups !!!
1. Open regedit.
2. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 6\Sites\
*modify as needed for the version of dw you are using
3. Select the site number that you're having problems with
(just look in
each one e.g. "-Site3" until you see the site name being
mentioned).
4. Careful here...
Locate the values that begin with "Local Expanded Dir" and
end with a number
(there should be quite a few of 'em) and delete them.
5. Then open the value "Local Expanded Dirs" and using a
'Decimal' base,
change the value to 0 (zero).
6. Quit regedit, and that should solve it...

  • Firefox now keeps my tabs when I close the browser if file manager is still open. Can I turn this off?

Used to be if I closed the browser while file manager was open it would close that session, and when I opened Firefox again, it would have a brand new session with the home page. Now I just get the same session as if I had only minimized the browser instead of closing it. Is there a way to change that?

You can set the pref browser.download.manager.quitBehavior to 2 on the about:config page.<br />
That will make Firefox ask for confirmation if you want to cancel the download if you close Firefox.
    See:

  • File Manager unable to open, Windows error message...

When I try to open File Manager from Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Phone Browser in My Computer, a Windows error message suddenly appears and says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." I don't know what seems to be the problem. I've been using it for months and this is the only time I encountered a problem like this. How can I solve this problem?
I have the latest version of Nokia PC Suite (Version 6.85.12.0), my OS is Windows XP 2000, and I'm using a USB cable as a connector.
Please, I really do need to fix this one.

  • Why does the site manager create c:\ folders for files that don't belong to the site via FTP?

    Hello everyone,
now I've been using Dreamweaver since Ultradev 1.0 and I have just recently upgraded to CS 5.5 Web Edition. Before that I used CS3. I've allways been very satisfied with Macromedia and Adobe products until now
Now I don't know whats happened in the last few years but I am getting the impression that the quality of Dreamweaver used to be alot more stable.
Developing for more than half my life I understand that bugs are usual and that not everything can be cared for, but to be quite honest I also know that there are bugs that just should not happen when you ship a product.
On the other hand I do love some of the enhancements that have come with 5.5, for example the Javascript Framework integration and jQuery code hinting features but what I really cannot understand is why the heck is Dreamweaver automatically uploading files that do not belong to the currently open site to the ftp server? I cannot think of any scenario in which this would be appropriate behaviour. I'd understand it if the files somehow contained links (CSS, JS, PHP, etc.) to the currently open site, but they don't! Dreamweaver simply sets out, every now and again, to creating a totally "dumb" folder structure on my ftp servers when I open a file from outside of the site - which I do very often to copy code I used in other projects.
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because Dreamweaver created folders like this "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\.... and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the currently open site.
Now I've looked for settings that would supress this behaviour but I could'nt find any.
Also, I really don't want to stop using the automatic upload function because it speeds up development time significantly.
Does anyone know how to work around this issue, or even better, does anyone know why this behaviour is happening and what it's purpose is?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

Dreamweaver doesn't "automatically upload" anything unless you have it set to on save. This is a bad practice if you aren't 100% sure of what you're doing. You may see it as a time saver, but if you have to go back two or three times and clean everything up, it isn't. Additionally, you select what is uploaded or not uploaded. If you choose to upload the entire root folder every time, then Dreamweaver will upload everything inside it... not automatically, but because you chose it.
As to the "dumb folder structure", when you define a site, YOU and YOU ALONE define the folder structure. If you are working in multiple sites at once (bad practice unless your are extremely meticulous about details) odds are you will sooner or later save a file from one site, with another site open in the Files Panel and Dreamweaver will save the file to the open site, not the one you opened it from (see why it's a bad practice to do this?).
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because
    Dreamweaver created folders like this
    "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\... .
and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the
    currently open site.
It reads like you have defined a testing server and are using it when  you put files. C:\localhost is a testing server protocol. If you are  testing files and then attempt to put files from the testing server  instead of the root folder, they will have the filepath from the testing  server and not from the root folder file structure. Again a bad  practice unless you are meticulous about details and remember to switch  back to the root folder from the testing server panel BEFORE you put  files.

  • [Solved] Auto-open a file manager after mounting with udev rules

    Hellooooo,
I followed the udev Wiki for auto mounting USBs and it now works great.
The only problem is: how can I automatically open a file manager of the mounted directory? I tried putting this at the end of the "ACTION=="add"," section in "/etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules" but for some reason nothing happens:
    , RUN+="/usr/bin/dolphin /media/%E{dir_name}"
Even if I just try to open dolphin with the "ACTION=="add"," section nothing happens either way.
So what am I doing wrong?

In that case, the best choice in my opinion is to use Automounting UDisks Wrappers :
devmon is a script developed by IgnorantGuru. He left Arch Linux, but the package in AUR is still there and is the last version. For a future new release, it should be available at his blog site. The script is distro independent.
My udisksvm script, in its default state, doesn't launch a file manager after automounting, but it is not a big thing to let the automounting be done and then manually open a file manager (a new entry in the traydevice right-click menu can also be added for that).
If you can do without automounting, there is also the bashmount script from jnguyen.
All these scripts don't require writing any udev rules, they use udisks instead.
I hope you could find something you like and which will suit your wishes.

  • Best File Manager For Really Large Folders

I have a folder with 397GB of music. None of the music players like it much. Rhythmbox and Banshee either wont run or are so slow they're not useable.
I have been using Xmms to play, which is great. Nautilus is way to slow and MC doesn't quite have the features I want.
What file manager would you recommend for really big folders?

I've used about everything there is. Amarok was nice for a while, but there were a ton of little annoyances that added up and eventually I was too frustrated to keep using it. I have settled on XMMS2 + gxmms2 + xmms2-scrobbler. It's been good to me.
Ideally, foobar2000 would be ported to Linux. There is nothing like it.
I also prefer PCManFM as a file manager. Dolphin and Thunar are OK. but PCManFM is very fast...it's good at dealing with my giant directories with thousands of files in it.
Also, for all that music, what file system do you have it on? I used to keep all my music on an NTFS drive for compatibility but it kept screwing itself up and it was slow, but recently I switched to ReiserFS and I've seen amazing improvements.

  • Magic Mouse not not able to open folders or files

Magic Mouse not able to open folders or files on desk top. I can drag folders around but not able to open either with a double or single click of the mouse.
Tried an older BT mouse with same effect.
    Command O works fine.

    Hey there kwilli2,
It sounds like your mouse left click is not functioning correctly. I have a couple of things to recommend and see what might be happening. First check in the Universal Access preferences pane to see if either, the double click speed is set to high.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Universal Access.
Click the Mouse & Trackpad tab.
For Magic Mouse, click Mouse Options to show these slider controls:
Adjust the sliders to your preference for double-click and scrolling speeds.
From: Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse: How to adjust double-click and scrolling speed in Lion
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4930
If lowering the double click speed does not resolve the issue, I would next try these troubleshooting steps in this article named:
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3048
Mouse buttons do not work as expected.
The Mouse preference pane allows users to customize the mouse features to meet their needs.
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Mouse from the View menu. Set the Tracking slider to adjust how fast the pointer moves as you move the mouse.
Try using a different surface to see if the tracking improves.
Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor window. Use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window if dust or debris is present.
If multiple Bluetooth wireless devices are in use nearby, try turning them off one at a time to see if the issue improves. Bandwidth intensive devices could affect tracking.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • [SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

ANOKNUSA wrote:The important thing to keep in mind here is that Windows Explorer is the foundation for the entire Windows interface. If you've ever seen the exploere.exe process die for any reason, you know what I mean. That's the reason it's able to utilize functionality like Fences. In order to get the same kind of functionality in Linux, you'd need a very similar setup. KDE + Konqueror are what come closest from my experience, since the Plasma interface actually has widgets built in that do what you want, but if you use KDE then you use KDE. Full stop. KDE is highly customizable, but only if you use its environment and parts.
Nah. I don't wanna use KDE. I've heard that it's the most resource hungry DE out there.
OK, maybe not something like fences in a file manager but I, at least, want to be able to group files AND folders (within a folder or a directory) under a single parameter and that parameter can be custom and not just pre defined like Date and Size.
Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?

  • Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. HELP!!

Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. I know that the folders that have the problem were not transferred to the hard drive via a photo transfer application (I have a Canon camera) but I simply copied them out of the photo card and onto my old PC.
Is there some way I can open these pictures on my Mac? They work fine on a PC.

    Thanks for your reply.
The files don't open in preview either. In preview I get the error message 'The file "xxxx_xxx.jpg" could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize'. The folders with these un-openable pictures do not even get imported into iPhoto. When I try to import them I get an error message about the files being unreadable.
The color profile information on the un-openable files is not visible but I see that all the other files from my old drive are RGB.

The file manager runs in KDE using ..disc free access to all hdd's.

  • Can't open file - file manager error

I can't open a couple files I was working on this afternoon. I shut down my computer when I left the office, now that I've booted again, when I try to open either of these 2 files I can a message that says "While attempting to access "file name" the file manager reported an error - 39."
I haven't made backups of these files, so that isn't an option.
I've rebooted a couple times, I've repaired disk permissions, but nothing works.
Previous files I worked on DO open correctly.
    HELP! PLEASE!

I'm not sure if you have time to hold the hand of a "newbie" to Terminal
Of course! I'm always happy to introduce people to the command line
    1) prompt$ - is my name bryceinman$
Most likely, yes. The default prompt usually contains the machine name, and sometimes the folder you are sitting in, and will usually end with a $ or a % (for a normal user), and typically a # for the root user.
    2) cd - is that the name of the hard drive or do I just type "cd"
That is a command which means "c"hange "d"irectory (when you hear "directory", think "folder") and is how you move from one directory to another from the command line.
    3) after that, it appears that I'm simply typing the path to the location of the file.
    Yep.
Are you saying the "filename" will be the next string displayed by Terminal if, indeed, the file can >be found correctly? (Right now I'm getting the following: -bash: Macintosh: command not found)
That's correct. Once you've changed directories to the directory/folder that contains your problem file, you type at the prompt "ls -l filename", except that you will substitute the real file name for the word "filename" in my example.
And yes, using this same logic, the "cat filename > /dev/null" you will use the actual file name in place of "filename".
Maybe an example will help. Let's say I have a machine named tomservo, and a file called SmithDoc.txt, and it's located in my Documents folder, in a sub-folder called Work. To perform my above suggestions from the command line, I would do the following (I also show example output):
    (Launch Terminal from Applications->Utilities)
    tomservo$ cd Documents/Work
    tomservo$
    tomservo$ ls -l SmithDoc.txt
    -rw-r--r-- 1 glsmith staff 512 Jun 10 22:01 SmithDoc.txt
    tomservo$ cat SmithDoc.txt > /dev/null
    tomservo$
A few things to note here. Since I added example output to the above steps, you may wonder why there is a blank prompt after the "cd" and the "cat" steps. This is normal Unix behavior. Many times, commands will not print out anything if they operated correctly. So, since I was able to change directories correctly in the first step, I got no output. In the second step, I'm asking the system to print information about the file ("ls" means "list", think "dir" in Windows), so that's why we see output. In the third step, I'm asking the system to read the file ("cat" means "concatenate"), but to redirect the output to the system bit-bucket (/dev/null). Don't worry too much about what /dev/null is -- think of it as a black hole. Anyway, since all the output is going there, that's why we don't see any output there either.
Why do I want to do this? Well, since "cat" will read the file without caring about what application created it, it's a good way to test the file's integrity in the filesystem itself. If there is something wrong with this file, the "cat" will get throw an error.
One last thing to mention, and hopefully this won't confuse the matter. If you have a file that doesn't have spaces in its name, please use that one to test with. That's why I used SmithDoc.txt. The command line can certainly interpret files with spaces in the name, but you must enclose the filename in quotation marks, or escape the space (don't worry about what that means). So, if my filename was actually Smith Doc.txt, anytime I typed this on the command line, I'd have to do:
    prompt$ ls -l "Smith Doc.txt"
    and
    prompt$ cat "Smith Doc.txt" > /dev/null
    Hopefully this all makes sense!
