File managers won't start?

Yesterday GNOME's desktop kinda...disappeared? I looked it up and it seemed to be nautilus's fault, and after clearing out ./gnome* and ./gconf* and /.nautilus* and restarting nautilus several times I gave up and started a KDE session, which worked fine.
This morning, though, KDE freezes before it can ever reach the desktop. CTRL+ALT+Backspace back to the session switcher, and XFCE now can't load its desktop either. Thunar and Nautilus refuse to work. I had to open up a document, so I used konqueror, but after opening that a few times it stopped working too, as did dolphin. The only working session I can get is fluxbox, using opera to browse my hard drive.
What's going on?

I swear, I restarted the computer several times, powered it down then turned it back on, restarted X, etc. with no avail.
I turn the computer on in the afternoon and it works fine. *shrug*

  • R12 Vision Conc managers won't start

    Hi All
I have a R12 Visions instance installed on Windows Server 2003. It's been running for a few months, so (almost) everything works as expected.
However, I can't get the concurrent managers to run. In the CM log is the following entry:
Routine AFPCAL received a return code of failure from routine spiini.
After some searching on the net, I ran cmclean.sql. This didn't make any difference. Unfortunately the script was unable to create a log file, but it completed successfully.
The next thing appeared to be to run AutoConfig. So I ran adstpall.cmd. There was an error in the log file, but I didn't notice it until after i ran AutoConfig. This is the summary report at the end of the .log file:
    [Service Control Execution Report]
    The report format is:

I then ran AutoConfig. Here is the summary from the end of that log file:
    [AutoConfig Error Report]
The following report lists errors AutoConfig encountered during each
phase of its execution. Errors are grouped by directory and phase.
    The report format is:

AutoConfig could not successfully execute the following scripts:

AutoConfig is exiting with status 1
The log file for this session is located at: E:\oracle\VIS\inst\apps\VIS_alard12\admin\log\12191020\adconfig.log
I then ran adstrtal.cmd, which also had some errors:

However, even though the Concurrent Manager is shown as started, it isn't.
If I log in, and navigate System Admin -> Concurrent Managers, the ICM is still has a red cross next to it. If I view my conurrent requests, I still get Inactive - No Manager.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Personal File Sharing Won't Start

My computer (G5 Dual Core Intel, 10.4.10) has suddenly stopped allowing connections from other computers. Went into the Sharing preference pane and personal file sharing was unchecked. Checked the box, set there saying "starting..." for a long time, closed the window, went back in and it was off again. Everytime I click on the Sharing preference pane it takes a REALLY long time to open, all other panes open just fine. I have ran Applejack, which repairs permissions and such, still no luck. Any ideas?

No Luck.... Still doesn't work, after dragging those files to the desktop I couldn't even connect to the network or the internet from this computer any longer. The sharing preference pane still hangs (either for a long time or forever) when trying to open it. Also, one of the files you mentioned isn't there and not found anywhere else on my computer. com.apple.internetconnect.plist
Sorry on the G5, old habits die hard I guess.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Deleted vital files -- computer won't start up

I have made a huge mistake. I seem to have deleted some important files due to my own pathetic stupidity. I had a kernel panic coming up every several minutes, so instead of doing something reasonable and going to Apple Support, I chose to view hidden files and deleted some non-essential looking things. Oh god, I don't need to be told that I am a complete idiot for doing this. I've already heard enough of that over the past several days. No, I don't remember exactly what I deleted or what the **** was going through my thick head. The kernel panic was happening whenever I had Safari open, and specifically seemed to be happening when I was browsing 4chan.
Is there anything I can do besides never touch a computer again? If I can just reinstall 10.4 (which would be amazing and wonderful and such a relief), I won't be able to do it for about a week, when I get home. My brother-in-law might have the 10.4 install disk, but I won't be seeing him until Wednesday at the earliest, if at all.
tl;dr? --> I deleted some things and now my computer won't get past the little grey apple on startup. Do not have install disks with me, as I am across the country right now. Any way to fix this before I get home in a week? Or even...can I fix this ever? He is only 2 years old.

If you can't wait, you may be able to have someone overnight, via FedEx or the like, the install disk, and have it Monday morning.
If there is an Apple Store close enough, a Genius may be able to help, or you could even buy another OS, depends on how time critical things are.
    Good Luck,
    Joe

  • File *.mp4 won't start

    Hi,
I have nokia 6630. When I try to play any *.mp4 file it said unable to play either sound or video clip. Triyin to play partialy. And after that I can hear only sound but without video and that's it.
Do I have to download and install new apps?

Just an FYI. Nokia phones support "some" types of MPEG-4 files including MP4 but not all possible codecs formats.
If you encode MP4 with "SUPER" using MPEG4 and the right bitrate and resolution it will play.
I recommend encoding into 3GP or 3G2 using MPEG4 for video encoding. This is more supported in Nokia phones and the resulting quality is the same since it uses the MPEG4 encoder.
640K Should be enough for everybody

  • Just won't start...

    (Sounds like a car, right?)
I'm in the middle of building a simple flash slideshow, using alpha fades between images. I have three layers, the first one being text, on the timeline for each layer/image. The other two layers are images, small footprint (sized and optimized in photoshop, each less than 100k). When I hit the Enter key it will play on timeline but the preview and fla file just won't start, hung up on the first frame - can't figure this out and I'm guessing I did something somewhere but I can't find it... I've got a more work to do on this one - any ideas?
I haven't got to using any scripts yet, I figured I wouldn't have to at this point since there's really no interactivity (yet)...
    Thanks!

I must have done something to the file... I started over and the new one is working perfectly... I would normally like to let someone attack the problem file, as I support the community but to be honest I'm on limited time... But thank you for your efforts! I really do appreciate it!
I guess it's like, "when in doubt, reboot"... I should have tried starting over before posting but frustration took over... me bad...

  • I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

  • What does a file folder with a question mark in it mean when the computer won't start?

What does a file folder with a question mark in it mean when the computer won't start?

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

  • Oracle 11g application won't start sometimes(jar files issue)

    Hello,
The issue we experience is that now and then, our forms 11g application
    won't start.
So it can be the case that, for example, the application can be started
succesfully 5 times in a row, but the 6th and 7th time, it won't start
anymore. But when we relaunch it for the 8th time, it launches perfectly.
When the application isn't starting, a new window is opened having a yellow triangle
with an exclamation mark on the top right corner.
After a long period, we suddely discovered that it had something to do with ".jar" files.
Because when we clear the "java jar cache" on the client machine
(start -> control panel -> java -> "general" tab -> "view..." button -> select all the files and click on the
cross(remove selected sources) ), the application succesfully starts for about 10 times in a row.
But the first time we start the application(after clearing the cache), it takes much longer, because the application
is downloading the .jar files again. (java logo appears with a progress bar)
But clearing the cache every time before starting the application can't be a decent solution we think.
When we enable all java debugging info in the console, we received the error below 2 times when launching a application session that refused to start:

    Anyone having a clue ?
    thanks in advance !

Sorry, I meant WEB-INF\lib in the WAR file inside my EAR.
I put all the jar files in the WEB-INF\lib of the WAR file but it still does not work. I have to specify them in the classpaths and put the jar files in the domains\domain\lib directory
I thought if you put it in the WEB-INF\lib then you don't have to put them in the classpath.
    Am I right?

That did it.  Not sure why that switch was there.
It might have been intended, but it was added incorrectly. -g512 is a legal switch. Then again, since you have 64-bit SQL Server, it is not likely that you will needed.
(The -g switch increases the area known as memtoleave, which is the virtual address space (VAS) not used for the buffer cache. On 32-bit SQL Server you may need to increase this area from the default of 256 MB. On 64-bit SQL Server the full physical memory
is available for VAS; on 32-bit it's only 2GB.)

  • Firefox 3.6.3 won't start with a particular file:///

I can do {"c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" file:///n:\911c\OwenShow\helphtm\ohelpfrm.htm} but I can't do the same thing in a windows exec; firefox runs and hangs-up in the background. I assume this is FF's problem because when I run firefox again after killing it, the file appears correctly; or if I run firefox, and then try the exact same exec process, it works (i.e., in a 2nd tab). And I think closing "Firefox won't start after update 3.6.3 downloads and installs" was ridiculous, since the supposed solution ENDED WITH A QUESTION and WAS NOT a solution. j.g. owen * email: [email protected] * web: http://owenlabs.org

    And wonderful!
Updated OSX (10.6.5) - and then thought what the heck, I'll trying enabling Firefox Sync. And it worked - for a couple of days. Until I accepted the update for Firefox Sync (1.5.1) - and I am back where I started, nothing works.
I have no clue about this

  • Won't start as it says it already is .. even though I've done a 'cold restart'.. answer to look for xpicleanup.dat doesn't work as I don't have that file on my system

quite frustrating...when I first got messasge that firefox couldn't start I 'restarted' my system.. still got same message that another copy was running and I had to restart (or stop other copy).
Still go message. then tried cold start...i.e. shut down and then start...
then found msage about looking for and deleting xpicleanup.dat... could not find it on path suggested so I did 'search' for the file.. it's not on my computer and firefox won't start...should I just earse it and download firefox again

    Do a clean (re)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

When updating my itunes on my PC (Windows 7) this message came up:  Itunes program won't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing.  Try reinstalling to fix this problem.
If I re-install, will I lose all my downloaded songs and other data I've accumulated over time?
    Thanks!!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
