File Manipulation (ala Windoze Explorer)

I have had to use Windows and Dos for years due to applications not being available in the MAC environment. Then a few years I bought a Mini and have not regretted the move since. EXCEPT when I want to do some serious file manipulations. From my limited MAC experience I cannot easily perform tasks in OSX that are simple and routine in Windows.
Example: I like to "search" for all files of a type, say "*.M4V", then I like to copy them to a DVD and then delete the originals on the hard drive. This frees up space and gives me easy access of files of a similar type. Movie, music, graphics and similar large files that I might not access often do not need to be stored on the computer.
When I use the "Spotlight" tool, it will show me any occurrence of the search term (not just as an extension like I would prefer) and I cannot do any "group" file manipulations, i.e. copy to a burn folder then after I verify that the files are "good" on the DVD/CD, I would like to then delete the same files as a group.
In Windows I highlight, right click, copy, I then open the destination folder, right click and paste. Or if I want to see how much space I am using in these particular files, I right click, select "Properties" and I know if I need a CD or a DVD to store the selected files.
To delete the "backed up files" I can click on the Search Window, the selected files are still highlighted and I right click, select "Delete" and Boom bada bing, they are gone. I can do all of that in a few simple clicks in Win(ugh)doze, how do I do that in OSX, doesn't MAC make thinks simple and intuitive?
Any help will be appreciated here, I would think mimicking a Windows feature would be simple. Thanks in advance.

Hmm - maybe I am missing something, but I can do all those things in just about the same way. Using Finder > Find…, I can do a search for a file extension, in addition to any other criteria I come up with (including a raw metadata query) - note that the extension does not contain the period, that is just a separator. If I plan on doing similar searches in the future, the search query parameters can be saved so that I don't have to enter them again. I can then create a burn folder on the desktop and drag whatever items from the search window to it, and a Get Info on the burn folder will show what the content size of the burn will be. Right-clicking on the selected items and selecting Move to Trash deletes them, the same as any other Finder item - there is no file copy/paste in the Mac OS, though (never has been as far as I can remember).

  • Unable to preview jpg tif files in Win 8 Explorer

Before installing Design Std CS6 (not CC) plus Acrobat XI Pro, I was able to preview jpg and tif files in Windows 8 Explorer in any of the views (XLg, Large, Medium icons) and in the Preview Pane. However, now I only see the program icon, regardless of what application (P'shop or Win Photo Viewer) I associate it with. PDFs display fine in Win Preview.
I know I can preview in Bridge, but how do I get back the ability to preview JPGs and TIFs in Win Explorer as well?

Okay, problem has been solved: the Adobe install changed two Windows Explorer Folder Options (View > Options > Folder Options: View tab) - Always show icons, never thumbnails and Display file icon on thumbnails were checked after the install, but not before (I hooked up cloned HD I had made before the install to check). I can now see thumbnails (instead of program icons) in Win Explorer in the various views (Large icons, Medium icons, etc), as well as in Preview Pane. Hallelujah!!
Can't imagine why anyone would want program icons instead of thumbnails - or why in $&!^% Adobe would cause that change to be made on the install, but everything's back to normal and I'm a happy camper once again.
Thanks again for sticking with this, kglad - I really appreciate it! Hope this helps someone else.  Case closed.           ~Carol

  • File manipulation in JavFX

How to perform file manipulations in JavaFX ?

Future reference, java doc can easily found by doing a google search of java api.
Here is a link to 6:
Also, you need to learn some java basics these are all java basic questions...
Simple code in pure java not javafx:
FileReader inReader=new FileReader("myfile.ext");  // Note you could use a file object or a string here
FileReader bufReader=new BufferedReader(myInput);  // Taking my input stream into another input stream
char c=bufReader.read();  // I read the first character of the file
String line=bufReader.readLine(); // I read the first line of the file ended by a \r or \n (carriage return or line feed) Note skips first character because of the read() above.
    char [] section=new char [100];
bufReader.read(section, 10, 40);  // I just but into a char [] starting at the 10 value in the array and reading to 40 characters into the array.  Basically 10-39 of the 100 array has the next 40 characters in it starting at second line of stream. Also other things to move back into the stream read javadoc there are plenter of other readers/writers and input/output streams. What is the difference between a reader/writer and input/output stream? You shouldn't care. Above when I said stream I meant reader though.
Note you need a writer or output stream to write to a file and a reader or input stream to read from a file. The mention above of the array route [] probably won't work in javafx since it doesn't support arrays it uses sequences instead so I'd avoid that method in a javafx script class.
Good luck and read some java basics or take some java basics tutorial plenty things out there covering this as well as google could have easily told you all of the above.

  • Music plays in iTunes, but NONE of the MP3 files are visible in Explorer

This one is a bit of a mystery.
When I open up any of the folders in my iTunes Music folder, they appear to be empty. No MP3 files are listed at all. Yet, iTunes can still play the music.
    Here are the details:
    1. I keep my iTunes media content on an external hard drive, and iTunes is working fine. Some albums have disappeared but most of my music shows up in iTunes and plays properly. Therefore, the music files have to be there.
    2. When I right-click on my iTunes folder in Windows Explorer and choose "properties" I get a result: Explorer scans the folder and tells me I have 98.8 gigabytes in 18,279 files, (though when I look around, I see that a LOT of albums are missing). Yet, Windows Explorer is finding a lot of files even though I can’t see them.
    3. However, when I right-click on a folder inside my iTunes folder and choose “properties” (the folders for each artist and for each album are still there and still visible) I get weird results. It says that there is some small amount of data in each folder (27 kilobytes or 35 kilobytes) and some random number of files (2, or 5, or 6). It doesn't matter how many songs are actually on that album, it just gives me this small unrelated number. Yet, I can’t see any files listed at all.
    4. Under the View tab in Folder Options, everything looks fine to me. I don’t see a setting there that would hide MP3 files.
    5. I tried checking “show hidden files” and all that sort of thing, but nothing changed.
    6. I did a virus scan and it revealed no threats.
    7. I also went into the Command Prompt and used the dir command to see what was there. I could see all of my folders including my iTunes music folder. I have pictures, Word documents, Excel files, etc on this external folder as well. I can see all of these files no problem. I can also see all the Artist and Album folders in my iTunes music folder. However, even using the dir command, I can’t see any songs – there are no MP3 files visible. I reveal hidden and system files (dir /ah), I then see some files like these:
    desktop.ini
    AlbumArtSmall.jpg
    Folder.jpg
    8. I tried to play the music from VLC media player and Windows Media Player, but that doesn’t work because the files can’t be seen by those programs either.
    9. However, when I open iTunes, all the music is there and playable. Only iTunes sees the music.
Anyone have any idea what could have happened? The one thing I changed recently is that I ran the iTunes Genius function. It scanned my music and did what it was supposed to do, and it worked fine. I doubt that Genius could have done this to my external hard drive. I’m guessing I picked up a computer virus somehow, but my virus scan doesn’t reveal anything.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?
    Thanks!
    Doug

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!
You were absolutely right, Rob. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I've got nearly 200 Artist folders with 1,000 or so Album folders - and they are all completely empty of music.
But in the middle of that long list of folders, there is an innocuous looking folder labelled "Music." I looked inside that folder and, bam, there they were - all 92 gigabytes of my missing music files in a complete copy of all those Artist and Album folders.
I thought I was going crazy! How could iTunes be playing all this music when as far as I could tell, it had all vanished? But there it was. As you said, iTunes had simply moved it down a level in the folder hierarchy and then didn't delete all the original folders.
And as I scanned the original list of Artist folders, I also saw the other folders: Podcasts, Audiobooks, iPod Games, etc. I hadn't even noticed them before. I just assumed that all the folders I was looking at were Artist folders.
Thank you so much, Rob. I'm not sure I would have ever solved this "case of the missing music files" on my own. I would have continued to bang my head against "hidden files" settings and all that. Perhaps I would have tracked these files down by looking for their location using "Get Info" in iTunes. But maybe not. I had no reason to suspect that I didn't know where the music files were: after all, the Artist and Album folders were all right there. They were just empty! I was so focused on the folders being empty, it never occured to me that iTunes had created exact duplicate folders somewhere else.
Do you know if iTunes had any practical reason for leaving all those empty folders behind? I'm just wondering if it is safe to manually delete them. I noticed, for example, that they aren't completely empty. They contain hidden files of Album Art and various ini files. I wouldn't want to delete them and then find out that I just deleted all my album art and a bunch of important settings files.
Thanks again. You saved my neck with this one.

  • I don't see thumbnails for PDF files in my Windows Explorer

    Hi,
When browsing through my File Manager to look for files, I used to be able to see a thumbnail of any PDF files I'd saved.
I can still see the old ones created earlier, but my more recent files just show a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner or sometimes a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner.
Seeing a thumbnail I think helps to find your file. Does anyone know why I don't get them any more or how to get them back. (The save a thumbnail option is checked for normal word docs, but not visible when saving as PDF.
I am using Mic Office 2010 (Word) to save as PDF. My computer is Windows 7 64bit.
Interesting, I can see a preview of PDF files which is a help, but not individual thumbnails for my more recent files....can still see them for older, longer ago saved PDFs.
    Added info:
Just checked, I last had thumbnails in December 2011, January 2012 I stopped getting them.
Tried to insert a picture to show you what I get in explorer, but just get a big dark grey square so I'll explain. Just worked out the following.
Prior to end of 2011 my PDFs have a thumbnail.
After that I just have a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner if I create PDF with Word
If I do 'Save As' while in the reader I get a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner

NO, NOT THAT SIMPLE, now I find some normal thumbnails later in 2012, so the behaviour is changeable!!!!!

did you install acrobat x and does it work as expected?

  • Best Practices for File Organization/Project Explorer

So we are finally getting SCC at my organization to manage our LabVIEW development, and that is good!
Now, we are starting in on discussions about how we should organize our files on disk and how we should use the Project Explorer. When I started here about 3 years ago, I wasn't very familiar with the project explorer, so I read the article at http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/7197. Two of the main things I took away from that article are:
    1. Organize Files in a logical manner on disk. Whatever that is, it is not a flat file structure.
    2. The top level VI should be separate from other source code. Preferably, it should reside in the application folder.
    Push Back Against These Recommendations
Before I was hired, most, if not all LabVIEW development was done utilizing a flat file structure and the top level VI lived with the source code. Since we didn't have a proper SCC, each individual organized files as he saw fit. So I started using the Project Explorer (not even its use is totally accepted right now) and I began follow recommendations 1 and 2 above. I didn't always follow #1 very strictly, but I have been working towards it, and I have always followed #2 religiously.
Since we are starting these discussions on how we should organize files on disk I'm starting to get some push back to following these two recommendations.
The arguments I get in favor of using a flat file structure is that you always know where every file is; including the top-level VI. It is also argued that it is a lot of effort to organize and search for VIs when they all reside in different folders. I think the fear is that by getting "clever" and organizing our files in such a manner we'll make things complicated and we will somehow shoot ourselves in the foot.
The argument I get against separating the top level VI from the rest of the source code is that it:
    (a) Won't be clear where it is (like it is buried within hundreds of VIs). However, it is argued, you can just put a "!" in front of the file name and then it is always the at top of the flat file structure.
    (b) An extension of argument of (a) is that things either look or seem messy when VIs (including top level VI) don't live in a sub-folder and are just hanging out with the Project Explorer file.
    (c) I think there may be some fear of breaking the VI by moving it and altering the dependencies for the VI.
Convincing Others its Good to Follow These Recommendations
So, if I want to follow NI's recommendations, I need to come up with reasons we should follow these recommendations. Also, I should state that I care about following these recommendations because its what NI recommends. They've been around the block a few times and I'm sure there are good reasons why these are best practices. However, I don't think I've given a very compelling case for why these recommendations should be followed.
So I'll tell you all what I think good reasons are for these recommendations and perhaps I can get some feedback or additional support? If I'm crazy for wanting to follow these recommendations maybe someone can point out why I'm crazy.
    (a) Arguments for Following Both
    I. I passed the CLAD a couple of weeks ago, and I have started studying for the CLD. Part of the CLD is following both of these recommendations (see page 6 of http://ftp.ni.com/evaluation/certification/cld/cld_exam_prep_guide_english.pdf). While this isn't a reason in and of itself, it suggests that if it important when being certified it is important in practice!
II. If we hire new developers that are familiar with LabVIEW, they will most likely be familiar with these recommendations, especially if they are certified. That will lead to increased productivity out of the door because they won't have to learn our special way of doing things.
    (b) Arguments for Organized File Structure
    I. Unused VIs are easier to identify and remove. Right now we never remove VIs because we don't know if they are used or not. This leads to a lot of VI bloat.
II. It is hard to know what a specific VIs function is in a flat file structure by looking at the name.
    (c) Arguments for Separating Top Level VI from Source Code
    I. Placing the top level VI is an intuitive place for this VI. As long as the top level VI is the only VI in the application folder there is no mistake it is the top level VI, especially once you open it. This makes it easy for new developers to find the top level VI. I'd argue it isn't very intuitive for new developers to know that a VI in the source code folder that is prefaced with a "!" is the top level VI.
    Summary
So that is what I think so far. Is there anything else I am missing to support following those two recommendations or am I just being inflexible?
    Thanks!

    zenthoef,
As a CLA, I have struggled with file structure over the years.  Here are my recommendations:
    1.  Put the top level VI and the project in the top-level folder.  This makes it very clear where to begin.
    2.  Put the remaining user interface VIs in a separate folder.  Again, it makes it very clear what the functionality of these VIs are.
    3.  If you are using object, put each object in a separate folder.  Place the family of objects in one folder, with each object in a subfolder.
    4.  Keep the remaining VIs either in a single folder.  This can contain a small number of subfolder if your project is large, but too many folders makes it hard to figure out where your VIs are.  For example, you might have a DAQ subfolder, an Analysis subfolder, and a Report subfolder.  But if you had a Test1 folder, a Test2 folder, and you had a VI that was used by both tests, where would it go?  Keep it simple.
    5.  You inferred that it is hard to figure out what a VI does by its name.  That implies that 1) you need better names, and 2) your VIs are too complicated.  A VI should do a single function which can be adequately described by its name.  That VI might be something like Analyze Data.vi, which would contain a bunch more subVIs (like Get 1st Harmonics.vi), but each VI would contain a single function.  You wouldn't save the data to a report in the Analyze Data.vi, for example.
The most compelling reason for following these suggestions is that it is easier to figure out what the code is doing after you haven't looked at it for a while.  Once you have an application that is working and bug free, you shouldn't have to touch the code until you want to add features.  If that is even 6 months later, you will probably have forgotten how the code works.  As a consultant, I have had to update other people's code, and just figuring how where to start can be a challenge.

  • Quicktime grabs Vista file associations in Internet Explorer (TIFF etc.)

    Hi all,
I have a problem with Quicktime 7.6 and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista - maybe someone here knows a fix? I've tried everything I could think of ... to no avail... Many thanks in advance for any hints!
    Trouble is:
After installing iTunes 8.1.1 including QuickTime, whenever opening a TIF image in Internet Explorer 8, QuickTime will display it. I don't want that, I need to set a different application to open TIF files or to have Internet Explorer ask me whether I want the file displayed or download it.
This is extremely annoying, since our HTTP scan server (HP) sends its files as TIF directly to the browser, so there is now link to the file to right-click on and chose "save as". Before installing iTunes/QuickTime, Internet Explorer asked me where I wanted to have the file saved - now it just displays the image using the QuickTime plugin and I can't save it anymore.
I tried to right-click the image in the QuickTime display, it tells me I would need to buy QT Pro to save a copy.
I opened QuickTime's options and disabled TIF and TIFF both in file types and in MIME types.
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime.
I right-clicked on a TIF file on the harddisk, chose properties and changed the program with which to open the file (first Acrobat, than tried Windows image viewer, then Photoshop...).
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime. (When I open a TIF from a folder on the harddisk, Vista opens it in the program I specified - but any TIF within IE8 is still displayed with QuickTime).
I opened Vista's control panel and set the standards for file type TIF/TIFF to a different programm.
Result: no change, within IE8 any TIF image is still displayed using the QT plugin.
I used Internet Explorer's Add-On settings to disable the QuickTime plugin.
Result: any TIF image is displayed as a red X, it doesn't ask me what to do with it or where to save it.
    What can I do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Best wishes
    Frank

I used this link for tiff http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IMAGES
QT was opening the tiff files. When going into the QT control panel Browser>Mime settings>Images-Still image files I was able to uncheck tiff, which held. I was also able to uncheck all the file types under File Types tab(Images-Still image files) in the QT control panel. However the preference would not hold. Went into Start>Set Program Access and Defaults that also was of no help.
The only way I was able to get QT to release the tiff's from the website I posted was to go into the Folder Options control panel for File Types and change the tif & tiff from QT picture viewer to windows picture and fax viewer.
So not sure why the QT control panel will not respond, there are other file types in the Folder options control panel on this computer other than tiff's that are still associated to QT, but didn't try changing them, perhaps that needs to be done?
Good post I didn't realize this before reading your post, if I come across anything further I'll post back.

  • (Zen touch) Is there a way to do a file count for Nomad Explor

Hi. I just got my Zen Touch. It rocks, but I was wondering if there's a way to count how many files are actually in the NOMAD Explorer. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I'm sure my NJB3 tells me somewhere. Is there a place you can view the firmware version? I'm thinking it's around there somewhere, if it hasn't been removed from the Touch. I know that Notmad Explorer gives very clear details.
To save the tracks as a playlist, just queue them all up then hit the scroller and choose "save as playlist". Of course you can do a similar thing in the software by creating a playlist and then copying the tracks into it.

  • FDF file opening in Internet Explorer--not in Adobe Acrobat Professional XI

    Good morning!
I have created a form in Acrobat Professional XI and have a submit button that emails that data back as an .fdf file.  This is working as it should.
However, on some of the returned emails, the .fdf file is opening in Internet Explorer--not in the associated file in  Acrobat Professional XI.
Is this the default?  Is there a way that I can specify that it always opens in Acrobat?
I looked on line, and found where you have to associate that type of file with Acrobat
    I have Windows XP
in My Computer--in Tools, Folder Options, File Types, I have where FDF files are associated with Adobe Acrobat.
Are there other changes that need to be made?
We have a work-around--we can import the file data into the form--just takes a little longer.
I tested this before I posted the form online, and it worked perfect.  Now that it is online, we are seeing some snags...
As always--Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your quick response!
no--it is an fdf file.  Has an .fdf extension.
One difference that I have noticed that the file that is opening correctly (in acrobat) was sent from a gmail account.  The file that is opening in internet explorer was filled out in Adobe Reader XI from an outlook email.
This is the window that appears when the file is opened.
On the Tools--the only items that are accessible from this screen is the AddOnTools--not all the tools sets.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

  • (Problem) Grey empty Word window shows up while opening .doc or .docx files with virtual Internet Explorer 9

    Hi,
First i'll explain what i did.
I've Thinapped Office 2010 Professional Plus SP2 with an Internet Explorer entry point. (Thinapp version 4.7.3)
Made some changes in the registry so .doc and .docx files will open in the virtual IE browser.
Here are my changes made to the registry:

    "Word.Document.8"=hex(0):
    Now i have this problem:
When opening a .doc or .docx file in the browser a ' download bar' appears.
My document opens in the browser as expected but, at the same time an empty grey Word window appears at the background.
The grey window shows not all the time when opening a .docx or .doc file , this is whats so strange about it.
Sometimes when i open the .doc or .docx file it opens without the grey empty word window. It seems like it's happening randomly.
I also tested it out with .xlsx files (Excel) but this go's all well.
Before i forget, this all runs on a Windows 7 Enterprise environment.
Does anyone know what causes my problem, or can anyone help me?
    Kind regards,

Before i forget, this all runs on a Windows 7 Enterprise environment.
Does anyone know what causes my problem, or can anyone help me?
    Kind regards,
    Martijn

  • How To Remove PHP Extension File Association With Internet Explorer

When I select a PHP file to open it is redirected to be downloaded and opened (or I can choose to save) in Internet Explorer.  I need to test the file in different browsers.  How can I remove this automatic association?
I've tried selecting a php file from Windows Explorer and selecting a different browser with no success.  I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.  It's a big jump from my old one which used XP where there was no problem opening files with
    a php extension.

it sounds like you have a file association for .php, and, that you don't want to have one, so the original default behaviour would instead be preferable?

  • File manipulation issues

when I moved several video files to the recycle bin from my pictures folder, turned off file explorer from the task manager, and shutdown my computer, The files where still in the pictures menu when I turned my computer back on.
Also when I selected the microsoft video app as my default for .mkv files, then switch the default again to vlc, the folder doesn't update the thumbnail. Also, I then tried to delete the folder and it was never able to discover any of the files
It's far from system-breaking error, but it is an annoying quirk/bug

  • File Manipulation in an EJB

I am trying to write an application that needs to do some manipulation of files. I thought about using an EJB and T3File, but it has been deprecated. The documentation suggests: "BEA recommends that you develop a customized, stateless EJB to service these requests." Now since java.io is not recommended for use in an EJB, what else do I use? Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Found a solution.
Talked to my BEA technical rep. He recommended using a file event generator with
WebLogic Integration. I'm proceeding along that line.
