File names in folders on external HD don't appear

Have got a Firewire 500 MB plugged into my iMac running Snow Leopard. The Firewire drive had previously been connected to my older Power PC. Most of the time all the folders and subfolders on the HD show up. But sometimes they don't. Spinning wheel indicates the Finder is searching, but it searches endlessly, and Finder needs a reboot to right the system.
Have tried running Disk Utility and repairing permissions. Plus mounting and unmounting. A reboot seems to help, but then after sleep the problem is back.
I've been reading about Finder crashes in Snow Leopard, and suspect this is a Finder problem and not an HD problem.
Any further suggestions? Thanks!

Too bad I didn't get a single suggestion, but maybe my problem is just too weird or singular.
Today I used Onyx to clean various caches, including all the ds_store files. And that so far seems to have solved the problem.
However, reading about the numerous other Finder problems people are having, I would not be surprised if my Finder problem reoccurs. In which case I will begin exploring the various solutions proposed here, few of which I really comprehend.
Or maybe Apple would like to step up?

  • Imported source file name changed for the external table

    Hi,
I have external table from flat file. Now the source file name is changed. I can change the file location to point to the new file name, but I can't update the source for the flat file property(as seen under flat file properties, structure tab. the column "Sampled From"). Is there way to have this update without having to import the file using the new file name again?

In the Files section in the object navigator find the flat file you want to change the source of.
Double click on the actual file, and on the General tab change the old file name to the new one.
The fact that it has been sampled from a different file should not 'disturb' the working of the external table.
However, if the structure of the new file is different I'd suggest to resample.
    Good luck, Patrick

Hi Csound1, thanks. The email host is 1and1.co.uk, however, i am going to fess up and make myself look like a plonker now -
the email account in question was set up in Outlook as POP - stupid, stupid, stupid me, wasted an afternoon on this!  I have now changed the Outlook account to IMAP and Mail.app works perfectly - and looks much nicer than Outlook did.  Im in the middle of converting from Windows to a Mac, and still finding my way around the Mac
The lesson learned, never assume - always double  check!  All my other email addresses with 1and1 are all imap, except this one, and it happened to be the first one I set up in the Mail.app. (bows head in disgrace!)
Thank you anyway for attempting to help me!

  • How Do I Copy File Names & Folders From A Hard Drive To A Word Document?

    Hi Gang:
This may sound silly but I am having a herd time with the following - seemingly simple task.
I have data DVD-Rs with audio files organized into folders. Each folder contains audio files related to the folder name.
I would like to copy the file names and folders from a DVD-R and paste them into a MS Word file. I am just looking to get a listing of files as they appear on the DVD-Rs in their folders.
The problem is that when I copy and paste, the order changes (seemingly randomly) and the file names are no longer under the folder names. In fact, the whole thing looks to be really random.
Anybody know how to copy file/folder names from a hard drive or DVD-R to a word document and retain the file/folder structure?
    Thanks!
    LAHD

There is an even easier method with no Terminal magic required. In the Finder, select all the files you want the names of, press Command-C, switch to Word and press Command-V. Poof, your done.
If you view the DVD in List VIew, you can expand the folders you want the files for, then select all the files (and their folders if you want them too) and then do the Copy/Paste thing.

  • I need a clear answer - can files be sorted by file name in pse8.

I have looked everywhere in pse8 and cannot find a way to sort my pictures by file name.  I cannot believe Adobe would have left this capability out of the program.  I have saved my pictures with sequential file numbering.   I would appreciate a clear answer so I can quit messing with this.  Thanks much..

First and foremost, I must have the ability to sort by file name across folders.  If PSE8 cannot do it, what's another product can do it? My friend, an expert user initially recommended me to Bridge but I haven't been able to buy or download Bridge alone, what is my best option to have that kind of sort capability without spending an arm and a leg to get that plus a bunch of other features that I don't need.
Look forward to your answer, many thanks in anticipation.

  • Unlink Tag from File Name

    Hi,
I use iTunes on my Mac, and lots of my songs have international characters. I chose letting iTunes to organize my files, so I have folders and files with international characters as well.
When I export my playlists to m3u8 it works fine, but some softwares cannot recognize international characters on file path and thus the playlist import process will fail.
Is there any option to keep using iTunes to organize the files/folders, but without using international characters from tags? The only way I see is do NOT use itunes to organize the files - so I would have to manually keep the folder/files names without the characters that I don't want.
    Thanks.

When you select the preference to "Keep organized..." there are no options to control how it works. You can accept it the way it works, or you can uncheck the option. Personally, I dislike how it works (and you have provided more reasons not to like it) and always keep it unchecked.

  • Appending a file name to a file in photoshop

I have a work flow that takes a bunch of files and sets them up in a certain way. I then have an action that goes through and sets the files up for a delivery to a client. I do not want to run multiple actions and would like to have them save into one folder with the correctly appended file name. This obviously cant be done in an action, and a batch means that I have to create five different actions and sit there five different times to create the batch delivery. I would like one action that calls a script that saves the file with the appropriate file name.
    Here is what I have.
    Working file.psd
Runs an action. Flattens file in a certain way
saves a file out names "filename"_Large.tiff
    resizes the image to 5x7
    saves file out named "filename".tiff
    flattens file
    saves file out named "filename".jpg
    creates a few different layers
    saves file out named "filename"_ghost.tiff
    flattens file
    saves file out named"filename"_ghost.jpg
I have the action that runs all of this flawlessly, but I have to save them to different folders and on the next job I will have to update all teh file locations. I would like to just specify a folder location in my batch and have a script append the appropriate filename where need be.
    which would be
    _large
    _ghost
any help would be awesome. IF not i will continue to just run them manually. into different folders, rename, and update the folder locations and saves each time.

So why don’t you ask for help over in the Photoshop Scripting Forum?
thanks buddy, really helpful to be snarky... dont worry on the internet you are super cool!!!
a 5x7 is a 5x7 right 5x7 millimeters, centimeters, feet, inches, yards... what does it matter, I am not looking for you to write the action it is written. If you could read what I wrote and understand the words I was using, you would have seen that. But no you wanted to show up and be incredibly helpful. I bet I could look through  your recent replies and they are all exactly like this... nothing helpful just, im going to show up on threads and give absolutely zero advice that is useful.
I was only asking for a script that could be written that i coudl call within an action to do a save as with an appended name....
    thanks buddy!

  • Thumbnails have gone gray. Multiple cameras/file names could be issue

I uploaded some photos to iphoto the other day and then, all the photos went gray and are blank when I open each event. I do a search, and the photos still exist on my external hard drive (where they live permanently). I am concerned that the two cameras I have, have just overlapped in file naming and this may be the issue? I don't want file names to be the same, but don't know what to do. I took some more pics and uploaded to iphoto today, these photos show up, but the whole library is still gray, yet showing all the events and how many pics in each event. I rebuilt iphoto a few times, this did not help.
    Any ideas??

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I do a search, and the photos still exist on my external hard drive (where they live permanently).
Does this mean you are keeping your images on that drive and not within the iPhoto Library itself by using the iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced > Copy to library... option turned off?
photos went gray and are blank
Is it a solid grey window when you double-click the picture or is there an exclamation point in it?
    Any ideas??
    Yes.
Where is your iPhoto Library stored? The default location is Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library
How much space is available in the location where you have your iPhoto Library?
If you create a new iPhoto Library by holding down the option key and launching iPhoto, does this new library import pictures without issue?
Once you know where your iPhoto Library is stored try the following (Note: If your library is not in the default location Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library, you will need to hold down the option key and choose the library you wish to view after removing the iPhoto.plist.):
Ensure all your software is up to date (Apple Menu > Software Update).
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)

  • I can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.
Btw this group is for discussion of the Support Communities itself, you;d do better posting to Lion group. I'll see if a host will move it.

  • FTP adapter for Oracle Service Bus  - retrieve file by dynamic file name.

    Hi
I am newbie in OSB. I try to use FTP transport in Workshop, it must fill in "Prefix" and "Suffix" for destination file name.
But for us, the file name is sent by external systems.
    The workflow is:
    1. External system call our proxy services.
    2. Proxy service get file name from SOAP message.
    3. Proxy Service get the file from FTP server.
    4. The file send to Business services.
Any suggestions to implement about workflows?

Let me first put here what I understand about the flow:
External Sytem -->(filename)--> OSB HTTP PS --> (1) --> OSB FTP BS --> Read file based on filename
    |--> (2) --> send file ontent to another system or return to the original system
If that is the flow, then I beileve ther is no straight forward way to implement it in OSB.
OSB FTP BS will only write a file to FTP Location.
If you create a JCA FTP Adapter for reading the file, then you can use it only to create a Proxy Service, and that proxy will not pick up the file when called from another service but only when a file is put on the source FTP location.
So, to implement the solution you will need to use Java Callout to a class which has code written to accept the file name as input, read the file from an FTP location and return the file content.
This is my understanding of how it is, may be there is another way to implement this or in fact may be the latest version of OSB 11.1.1.4 or 11.1.1.5 JCA adapter does support read operation within a flow instead of just at the start of the flow.

  • File name with Dateand time stamp.

    Hi All,
I want to generate a file with a date and time stamp.
For that in File Receiver adaptor i am using option "Add Time Stamp" in File Construction mode. however it is generationg file name as: FileName_20082104_121211_645.txt . In this I don't know what these last three characters "_645" are? And In the File name i only want a file name with datetime stamp . I don't require underscore in between. for eg: FileName_20082104121211.txt (FileName_dateTime.txt)
Can anybody suggest me the way to achive this?
    Thanks,
    Atul

    @FileName_20082104_121211_645
The date time stamp in XI's file adapter will be in that format. This is to avoid over writing of files created simultaneously at the same time. So the last 3 digits is a form of an unique id to distinguish between the same.
In case you want the format as FileName_20082104_121211, use the dynamic configuration and create the file name inside the mapping itself and pass it across.
To get an idea about the same, ref:

  • Is there any reason not to use spaces in document file names anymore in a document library?

We are revamping our sharepoint document library file naming conventions. In lots of blogs and tutorials, I have seen over and over the recommendation to use underscores instead of spaces in document file names in sharepoint. Part of this is I think to prevent
the infamous %20 in URLs pointing to the documents. That doesn't really concern us and we don't generally have file names that approach 256 characters.  We don't want to go the route of having different document names than document titles so we want our
document names to be a clear and readable as possible. We think that using spaces (and occasionally dashes) in the file names makes them more readable, and sharepoint 2010 seems to be able to search these file name correctly.  An example document file
name would be "elephants - how to clean elephant cages".
Has anyone run into a reason to avoid using spaces and dashes in document file names in sharepoint 2010? I don't want to start using spaces and then be sorry I did down the road. Thanks!

It isn't going to lead to the fall of western civilisation.
You will get longer and messier URLs for documents but it's very unlikely to cause issues. There have been some bugs in the past where hyphens in particular can be mis-encoded in searches but they only affect a small range of build numbers if memory serves.
I much prefer using no spaces for document libraries as it makes the starting URLs so much cleaner but that's a style question. For documents unless you've got a very strict document naming standard spaces are common and dashes aren't uncommon.

  • How do you rearrange photos in a folder by file name?

How do you rearrange photos in a folder by file name on an ipad?

I don't believe it's possible under the standard "Photos" app (built-in) in iOS.
However, there appear to be many downloadable apps that will allow you to do this. Search the App Store for something like "photo sort".
