File naming with sequence

My editor requires that I name a file as in the following example:
FI_RX_London(sequence number)
if I try this while importing using file name with sequence, there will be a - sign in front of the number. My question, how do I remove the - sign

In the import dialog, pick Filename-Sequence from the drop down File Naming list. (you will have done this already). Now click the drop-down list again and choose Edit. You will now see the Filename Template Editor window; remove the hyphen from the text box that shows
{Filename>>}-{Sequence #(1)>>}. When you edit this, you will see the example just above it, reflect the change.

  • Dynamic file naming with File/FTP adapter

    Hi all,
I have a requirement for writing files with names of the files based on a customer ID.... a dynamic name based on a value retrieved from the customer DB.
I have already tried using the dynamic file naming suggestion in the bpel dev guide, it does not work. I followed the instructions, the process fails to compile and throws "part" and "undefined variables" errors etc.
Has anyone succesfully used file/ftp adapter to write files with dynamic file names (using a varibale), not %SEQ% or %datetime% formats?
    Thanks,
    Hasan

You can create a header variable that will allow you to set the outbound file name inside the process. This variable is a message type. From the type chooser select:
    Message Types
    Partner Links
    Outbound Partner Link
    Outbound wsdl
    Message Types
    Imported WSDL
    fileAdapterOutboundHeader.wsdl
    OutboundHeader_msg
This variable will have a part filename.
Set this part to whatever you wish your file to be named.
Select the invoke to your outbound file/ftp partnerlink. Move to the adapters tab and select the header variable you created as the Input Header Variable.

  • File Naming with parts of names and dates (substrings)

I am trying to settle on a filenaming convention that Lightroom doesn't support, but does exist in Breezebrowser and in many database languages.
It is a function that allows using just part of one of the other available file naming elements, instead of the full thing. This helps keep file names shorter but still meaningful.
For example, one piece of the naming convention I'm trying for is just the sequential number generated by my camera, but without the camera specific designator. For file '_C8P7692', for example, I just want to use the '7692' part.
This could be accomplished if I could specify in the file name builder that I only want to use those characters. It would look something like:
SUBSTRING(filename,5,4), where 5 is the character I want to start with, and 4 is the number of characters I want to take.
This would also address some of the other feature requests for variations on the date formats built into the file name builder.

You can do that one in LR easily.
Use "(filename or original) number suffix" instead of "filename".

  • File naming with dashes

Does anyone know if its possible to set up Contribute to substitute dashes for spaces when it creates file names instead of just removing the spaces? I'd like to start using dashes in our file names for SEO purposes but can't trust my users will remember to do so. My users are on CS3 so maybe it was updated in a newer version? Any guidance is much appreciated.

  • PE7: Problem with auto file naming of scanned photos

I began scanning photos using PE7. PE stored the files in my designated folder. It named the first scan "Image1.jpg." Thereafter, files were named "Image1-nn.jpg." I would finish for the day, and PE would pick up where in left off in file naming for the next batch.
All was well until I got the bright idea to rename the first photo to "Image1-0.jpg," so it would sort properly. Worse, perhaps, I renamed it outside of PE, in Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, this confused PE completely. Now, it wants to restart the file naming with "Image1.jpg," and scans terminate with a message that the scan was unsuccessful because there is already a file with that name in the catalog.
How do I go about resetting things back, so that subsequent scans resume at the next available file name+number?
Second, is there a way to control what prefix ("Image1") gets inserted in scanned file names?
    Thanks.

By renaming the file outside of PSE, it's now "missing" in your PSE catalog and PSE doesn't know how to find it -- its thumbnail should have a yellow question mark on it.   Do File > Reconnect > All Missing to reconnect any missing files with their new locations, and going forward, only rename and move files in the catalog using PSE.
Once you've reconnected the missing files, the scanning should no longer be confused about file names.
I don't think you can control the filenames used by the scanning.  You can set the folder used via Edit > Preferences > Scanning.   For a number of reasons, I do scanning in two steps -- first, I use the scanner's utility to scan to a file, then I drag the file into the Organizer.  This gives me fine control over the file's name and folder location.

  • Aperture's file naming. Am I doing something wrong?

I hate Aperture's file naming with every ounce of my being. It is so frustrating and this simple item kills my workflow. I am hoping it's me and I'm doing it wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    1. I import the originals. File name is _dsc.0450.nef
    2. On import, I change the name to lapresle200909260450 and sort by image date.
    3. I edit.
    4. I move images around and group them visually by subject: the details, the groomsmen, etc...
    5. I rename the files sequentially. So file #450 might now be #575. The new name might be iconex090926prf0575 and sort by version name.
The proofs go up and the client orders #575. I open the image in A2, edit with Photoshop and save. I go back to A2 and the stack now has two images, iconex090926prf0575 and lapresle200909260450. I export the client's retouched image to a folder on my desktop. My file naming presets are "version name_custom name" with the custom names being 4x6, 5x7, 8x10. When I'm ordering from my lab, each image has the print size in the name so I can keep big orders straight.
After each image that gets an external edit, I have to go into the folder on my desktop and rename the file. Is there any way to have A2 export the image with the name that is visible? Going back in and highlighting and renaming every file to match the proof is so time consuming.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers-Kevin

I import files as they are, no renaming. Then when I'm completely finished editing and organizing them within folders/projects/albums, + any additional editing in PS or other external editors, I relocate masters to my desk top and rename them then. A few seconds later I consolidate those same files back into the Aperture library and there they sit with new "file names." This method works for me but it helps to have tons of free space on the desktop and 16 cores rockin.
Now why can't aperture export "file names" not version names but files names makes absolutely no sense! There is no preset for this and that needs to be fixed. I export custom name and index using the same exact name as the file name to put the images online or where ever. As long as nothing was moved or deleted this method sends images out matching the file names. You need to make sure that all your editing is done before you relocate and consolidate masters. My invoice from Paypal matches the files in my library. Perfect work flow if you never mess up the rough edit, if no body ever wants additional changes-lol, it's really a linear process, and is very limited*
Editing images in apertures external editor or aperture dodge and burn is just stupid because they both create a additional tiff file in an attempt to force nondestructive editing. Where is the switch to turn this off! Please, we're professionals, lets' go manual.
No switch, so I don't use it. It's a failed system like most other "round trip editing" attempts from apple like fcp, soundtrack, and others. I've used them all for years and they only work about half the time, removed from my work flow, end of story.
Instead, prior to relocating and consolidating, I just export out the raw file as a 16 bit tiff and reimport it into aperture when editing is done in PS. Again, my computer does this in under a second, so it works for me.
*Okay, rwboyer, has a very good approach to the problem. Do it the programs way instead of our way. Renaming the masters on import and only adding extensions later is really the way to go. All your searches will always hit the master name so all the extra stuff after the master name can personalize your client without ever changing the master name. He is also right regarding the use of metadata, it's really the reason why I'll forever be a aperture guy.
Having said all that, I still think my way could be the fastest for all kinds of reasons with just two fixes.
Add preset to export file names
toggle switch, for editing raw files in Photoshop raw instead of creating new tiff files.
Rwboyer, makes perfect sense, great approach.

  • File naming: sequencing by date

In the Filename Template Editor and Rename Photos (F2) function, I'd like to be able to sequence my file names by date, with the sequence beginning with 1 for each day, and incrementing regardless how many imports I do.
For example, the first image for January 2, 2008 might be called "08-01-02_001". On that day I may perform three or four imports, and the sequence continues to increment from 001 to however many images I import on that day. The following day the sequence automatically resets to 1.
If images are imported that were recorded on an earlier date, this function would have to increment from the highest number of the date the image was recorded (because this is how Lightroom's date function works). For example, if on December 28, 2007 I shot 243 images and today I import another image that was shot on that day, the file name would be 07-12-28_244.
(I currently sequence by month, manually specifying the start number for each import sequence, but I sometimes forget to change the sequence starting number.)
Thank you for all you've done. I can't imagine working without Lightroom.

I would like to see exactly the same enhancement. Perhaps for some file naming schemes it would be helpful to parameterize that function, e.g., "Resent sequence number [to xxx] whenever [date|month|year|camera ...] changes].
As part of that, I would like very much to have more options/control for the file organization. In particular, I would like to see yyyy/yyyymm/yyyymmdd (e.g., 2008/2008-01/2008-01-15 with the "-" being optional). Right now, the closest you can come to that is yyyy/mm/dd, which leaves too much opportunity for file/folder name confusion.

  • Using "Single Pass" entry point with sequences not named "MainSequence"

    Hi,
The object model of TestStand provides clustering of multiple sequences in one sequence file. The editor itself allways knows which sequence the user has actually selected (enrty Run ... in Menu Execute is allways fullfilled with the correct sequence name).
Why isn't there any support of using the entry points of the model with this selected sequence, these sequences use the default "MainSequence" if they are called by the corresponding menu entry of the Execute Menu.
I am looking for any solution to use the entry points (by menu calls) with sequences not named MainSequence as well.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Sunny

    Sunny -
In the process model entry point "Single Pass", if you look at the sequence context during an execution, you will notice that the sequence that was visible or "selected" at the time of the execution is started is specified under "RunState.InitialSelection.SelectedSequences[0]". You could alter the MainSequence call step in the process model to call that sequence instead. Keep in mind that you will have to decide how to handle the case when no sequence is selected, do you call MainSequence or do nothing?

  • Sequence Number By Date Option For File Naming

I would like to see Lightroom have the option to have the sequence numbers be reset when the date changes and increment accordingly. For example, I have the file naming set to use Date (YYYYMMDD) Sequence Number (0001) and the sequence number starting at 1. As Lightroom is now I will end up with 200909010001, 200909010002, 200909020003, 200909020004, 200909030005 200909030006 etc. and what I would like to see is the option for 200909010001, 200909010002, 200909020001, 200909020002, 200909030001 200909030002.
This would make it much faster for renaming or import when using this combination of date and sequence in file names.

    Hi
For the Transport Protocol "File Transfer Protocol (FTP)" files are always processed in ascending alphabetical order
If you want the file to be processed in sequence then you can use Quality of Service EOIO in the sender adapter.
The files are processed in the sequence they are picked up.
otherwise use BPM for File Sequencing..

  • File Naming for Image Sequence to work properly?

    Hi,
I shot about a 226 shot time lapse this weekend and so far having a severe pain getting it to be a time lapse movie in photoshop.
    Shots were 3 minutes apart.
Originally I tried using the RAW images, then exported them to full size jpeg, then finally exported them to HD video resolution jpegs thinking format might be part of my issue. But it seems to be more of a naming convention problem.
    Originally tried :
AAA-XXX-<4 digit shot #>-20100508.<ext> & AAA-XXX-<4 digit shot #>-20100509.<ext>  as it spanned over night. Once sequence was loaded I then saved as PSD before trying to export.
That would only load the very first image, even though it would come up with the frame rate question.
Then I shorted it to 0508-HHMMSS.jpg & 0509-HHMMSS.jpg and set the frame rate to 10 frames per second. It warned "This sequence has gaps". Once sequence was loaded I then saved as PSD before trying to export.
This created a 36 minute timeline in CS5 but the opening image was the one I selected, and then about 36 minutes of blank, with a random image from somewhere in the middle of the scene being the last frame.
I tried this in both CS5 and CS4 thinking it may be a bug just in CS5.. but I get the exact same results.
What naming convention is the Image Sequencing 'open' really looking for to work properly. I would have thought that either of the above would have worked.. but so far they are not.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Using Adobe Photoshop CS5 & CS4.
    Christopher

I did just do a generic 1.2.3.4.5.6. export up to 226 and that seems to have worked. But I don't think I should have to do that and the image sequence function should be able to handle more agile file naming sequences.

  • I had two files named graphics and I replaced one graphics file with another which was the wrong one.  Can I undo my replacement?  I move the wrong one, which was on my desktop into another one and that is when it as me if I wanted to replace the file.

I accidently replaced a file with another.  Can I undo my action?
I had two files named graphics.  One was on my desktop and another was within another file called solitarie.  I move the one on my desktop (wrong file) into the solitarie file and was asked if I wanted to replace the graphics file in the solitarie folder (the correct one).  I said yes accidently and then remembered that I had made a mistake.  If I use undo, it only move the wrong file back to the desktop.  Is there an undo of replace?

Sorry, but's that's why you get the warning. "Replace" means just that - the new file over-writes the old one. There is no undo.

  • Need help naming photo files in a sequence?

I want to name a group of files in a sequence. For example, I have 10 photo's from Joe's birthday party. I want to name the files JoeBirthday with a number after them (JoeBirthday1, JoeBirthday2, and so on.). I cannot figure out how to do this. Can someone help?

You can do this w/Automator but I'm not sure if it's any faster than other ways. If you have quite a few items and select all, it might be faster. See:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of using only sequence files or working with sequence files in projects

    Hello,
can anyone please tell me the advantage of using projects instead of just a sequence file? Do I need projects only if I have more than one sequence file?
    Thanks a lot!

    MGH,
Projects are meant to help with organization of TestStand files, but with the intention of use as part of a deployment of your test system.  As the TestStand Reference Manual (page 2-5) puts it:
"In TestStand, you can create a workspace to organize and access your development files. A TestStand workspace file (.tsw) contains references to any number of TestStand project files. A TestStand project file (.tpj) contains references to any number of other files of any type.
Use TestStand project files to organize related files in your test system. You can insert any number of files into a project. You can also insert folders in a project to contain files or other folders."
