File Numbering Reversed

I just installed PSE 8 and I have noticed one thing that is driving me nuts.
While using the editor, when I open a file to edit I click File then Open and it opens a window for me to browse for a file. I find the folder with my photos and open it. Problem...the files in this window are arranged backwards. IMG_0238 is first IMG_0001 is last. I can right click, arrange by icons by name and they are in order...until I open the next file and it is backwards again.
This may seem like a small thing but it is driving me crazy. I have never seen a computer program do this. 12345 is 54321.
AND after 30 minutes on the phone with someone at adobe...I was disconnected. Argh...
Is there a file preferences option that I could use to correct this issue?
Thanks!

That's an idea. I have never tried it that way. After a few years of doing it the with the Ctrl+O command it will take a bit of getting used to...Which I don't really want to do...hehe
It is strange that it does this for you in XP and not in 7.
I am planning on buying a new 7 machine for Christmas...so i guess I will only have to deal with this problem for a month or so...
Thanks for the reply.

When iPhoto displayed thumbnails the file number was always shown which was useful in selecting a specific image.  The numbers are not shown in Photos. Can I change this?
Photos can display the titles of the photos below the thumbnails. But while iPhoto used the filenames with the file numbers as titles as a default title, if no title had been assigned, Photos does not do that.  Filenames are only shown in the Info panel for a photo. You have to copy the filename to the title filed manually.
A posted an AppleScript to help with this task as a user tip, see this link:  Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename
For a discussion on how to improve this script, see:  Re: Re: Where are photo file names?

  • How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes.  I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images.  Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title.  Why does this happen?  Can I make it stop?  How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it.  Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.
    Many thanks,
    Adam.

In every version prior to iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File...
    In iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original...

  • Photo file numbers - duplicates

    Hi,
My digital camera can take 9999 photos. I have just this week taken more than that this year and the camera started over with numbering the files (0001, 0002 etc.) When I put these into iphoto will it over write the photo files I took earlier in the year that now have the same file numbers?
    Thanks

    wojopaul:
No, they won't be overwritten. iPhoto will put them into folders based on the date to correspond to the Events preferences you've set up. If two photos are added to the same event iPhoto will append a "_2" to the file name as it moves it to the folder.
However, you can run into problems if you try to export a number of photos that end up having the same file name (but not in the same event). In those cases you should rename the photos with the Batch Change option and export with the option to use the title instead of the file name.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo file numbering system oddity

First time poster, long time lurker. I have over 1000 photos on my iPhone and I love it as a tool. But one thing I noticed, that is maybe a bug - or maybe a feature but I doubt it:
The photo file numbering system - when you get past IMG_0999 and surpass 1000, it will go back to numbering the files from IMG_0001. That creates a huge issue when I try to sync the newly created files back onto any computer as it will attempt to overwrite any file with an identical file name as the new one, or vis versa.

this is kind of discouraging for me.. as now I'll have to create multiple folders to hold my iphone pix.. i guess one for every month? I just went over the 1000 mark and now i cant back up my photos without putting them somewhere else... this is going to make finding pictures very difficult.
why have a filename of IMG_XXXX if you only change 3 digits of it? they could support up to 10K pictures if they used all 4 digits!
anyone have anymore info on this?

How do I get the Ipad to display the photo file numbers as well as the image?

You can't in the Photos app - if you want to see filenames then you'll need to find a third-party app

  • File numbers disappeared on thumbnails, how do I get them back?

My file numbers disappear on the thumbnails, how do I get them back? Im not sure if I changed a setting or if it is a bug in the program, but I need to get the file numbers (file names) to reappear.
    Thank you for your help

The short answer is either Y or U toggles metadata display on images in the viewer and browser.
    The long answer is here:

  • 2 SD cards with the same file numbers

How do I burn 2 SD cards with the same file numbers. Always says do I want to replace photo with the same number.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Rename one set of photos by renaming them in iPhoto with the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option and then export to the Desktop with the option to use the Title as the new file name.
Or, put one each set of photos in their own folder and put the two folders on the memory card.

  • Not seeing file numbers in filmstrip

File numbers are not appearing on my filmstrip.  How can I set Aperture to be sure I'm seeing the file numbers?
They show up in metadata, just not on the filmstrip.  This must be an easy fix -- help please!

The U key troggles metadata in the filmstrip (As well as the browser)

  • Download backups and file numbering issue

A while back I lost a lot of stuff when a backup went wrong.
I have been slowly trying to sort out the catalogues which has often meant importing stuff from the downloads backups.
Anyway what seems to exist and is making life hard is that there are 2 different file numbers for the same picture. So it may have originally be IMG_1033.jpg but the same picture in the downloads back ups might be IMG_ 2355.jpg
While I know I did a lot of things wrong I am more interested right now in trying to tidy things up and get the library and backups matching so that I know I don't have dups and I do have all the originals I was able to recover.
Is there anyway to do this.
    Cheers

How come that happened? As far as I know, Lightroom renames both files when you rename and backup on import.
Did you renamed the files in Library module after importing? If yes, you can use Rename in Lightroom to restore the original filenames. If no, there's nothing Lightroom can do about it. You need a good third party program to help find image duplicates among files with different file names.

  • Renaming, but keeping original file numbers problem

It appears that when I edit RAW files from lightroom in photoshop, upon saving it adds "edit" to the filename AFTER the original file number.  Since what comes back from photoshop is a PSD file instead of a RAW file it's pretty obvious that I've edited the image, so the change just becomes an annoying addition to the file name -- that is, until I go to export the images in other formats.
When exporting, I tell Lightroom to rename my files, but keep the original file number.  Since the original file number now has "edit" behind it on any of the psd files, Lightroom wipes out the file name and starts numbering them numerically.
This makes it difficult from an organizational standpoint, since I use the original file number as part of my database management.
Anybody know how to stop the "edit" intrusion in the filename, and if that will indeed fix the file numbering issue?
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Thanks!
I'm curious though -- why does it seem like a bad practice from a DAM standpoint?
Quite often my files are saved as RAW, PSD's, Tiffs, and Jpegs -- the last two going to my clients.  If they need something changed on the file sometime down the road, it's very easy to find my way back to the PSD or RAW file to make the fix if they share a file number.

  • Windows to Mac.  File numbers don't match.

On transferring images from Windows to Mac, the file numbers were renumbered starting with B.  Blank files are also showing with the old DSC file numbers.  Can they be synchronised?

My UNIX skills are a little rusty, but you should be able to change the permissions recursively from terminal. Try using chmod -R to change the permissions on all subfolders within the directory you copied over.
That is the drawback of using a CD/DVD to copy files over. They become read only...
    Good luck...

  • How can i bulk rename music files in reverse order from artist - song name to songname - artist

How can I bulk rename music files in reverse order from artist - song name to songname - artist.
I actually dont need to rename the actual files.
Its just i have a huge txt list of 100,000 music names that are listed as so..
    Artist - Song Name
    Artist - Song Name
    Artist - Song Name
    Artist - Song Name
    Artist - Song Name

I wonder if we haven't misunderstood what you were asking for. Could it be that you have not a huge file, but just a huge list of names in many small files. If that's the case, you should rather use the following script instead of the previous one.
Since this script does not rename the files, make a backup of your files before running it.
set theFolder to choose folder -- the folder containing your text files
    tell application "Finder"
set theNames to name of files of theFolder whose name extension is "txt"
    end tell
    set theTextFiles to {}
set theFolderPath to POSIX path of theFolder
    repeat with thisName in theNames
copy theFolderPath & thisName to the end of theTextFiles
    end repeat
    repeat with thisFile in theTextFiles
set F1 to open for access thisFile
        set theText to read F1
        close access F1
set theParagraphs to paragraphs of theText
set bigList to (a reference to theParagraphs)
        set theNewParagraphs to {}
set bigNewList to (a reference to theNewParagraphs)
        repeat with X in bigList
            set P to offset of " - " in X
            if P = 0 then
                set Y to X
            else
                set Y to text (P + 3) through -1 of X & " - " & text 1 through (P - 1) of X
            end if
copy Y & return to the end of bigNewList
        end repeat
set theNewText to text 1 through -2 of (bigNewList as text)
set F2 to open for access thisFile with write permission
        set eof F2 to 0
        write theNewText to F2
        close access F2
    end repeat
display dialog "Done!" buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon 1
