All applications must be installed properly by running the respective setup/ install apps and that is that. After successful install, they will be available eitehr in the Windows Start menu or the Mac Applications folder. If you're having any issues, you need to explain better and provide system info...

There are apps that do this. I've used an iPhone App Excelcontacts for a couple of years to do just this. Should work fine on iPad. There are other apps that do this, too.

  • Using Send Unix in ARD to copy files from laptops to server--

OK, you ARD "Send Unix" gurus, here's a question. I am still getting my feet wet in the Terminal and having lots of fun, no big mistakes yet..
I am looking for a solution to make a teacher's life easier. It's a writing class. Each day the students do a writing exercise with the MacBook or iBook carts, and the students seldom have the same computer twice. The laptops are bound to Active Directory, and a local user folder is created in /Users using our naming scheme lastname.firstname, and the teacher laptop has Apple Remote Desktop Admin.
Usually, students are supposed to save their documents to their own home folders on the server, but it's kind of wonky through the menus (until we get the Xserve up and running), so they usually save first to Desktop and then drag the files to their server home folder icon on the Dock. BUT, I'd like to set it up so the teacher can get copy of the Word document each day to read and archive. Setting up another share for the students to drag it to proved unreliable, e-mail is not an option (too much processing of individual files for the teacher), and the teachers can go into the home folders when absolutely necessary if one or a few kids forget, but not all of them each day.
Here's what I'd like to do-- create a script that the teacher could run in ARD to do the following to the group of MacBooks/iBooks:
copy contents of currently logged-in user's Desktop to /Volumes/mountednetworkdrive/sharename/classfolder/ AND rename the file if there is already one there with that name, do NOT overwrite.
The students are supposed to name their files last.first.doc, but they forget, and the test scripting I've tried overwrites Document1.doc with Document1.doc from another student. Since they put their names in the document itself, it's not a big deal to the teacher if they forget to name it correctly.
The major problems -- the variable for current user "~/" as in ls ~/Desktop/ doesn't seem to list the desktop contents of the current user on the remote machine, therefore I assume cp ~/ would also not work properly.
I have also be unable to find any documentation of any of the various copy commands that talks about renaming instead of overwriting (like web browsers do if you download the same file multiple times, for example, by appending a digit).
Options: Instead of renaming, copying the logged in user's whole Desktop directory (but not whole cached login) would eliminate the need to rename, but still not as handy as all the files in one directory. Eg. "cp /Users/(last.first)/Desktop /Volumes/mountednetworkdrive/sharename/classfolder/" but we'd need the folder name of the currently logged-in user to copy, too, (confusing I know) so that the teacher would then find in server/share/class/ a bunch of folders named last.first (the student names) with another folder called Desktop and their document inside. The rudimentary script I wrote above, even if it worked, would copy the whole cached home directory, which is too large with the Library, as well as the inevitable Photo Booth pictures.
Another option would be to copy the contents of the desktop to a new folder named after the logged in user (if that variable exists).
Arg. This was supposed to be simpler, but if there is any way to make this work, I'd appreciate any ideas.
    Thanks

My usernames are shorter, so I never noticed that who only has 8 characters. Just to make it more interesting, the if command further down was goofed up by the forum. The ' -e "$DEST/$FILE" ' should have square brackets where the single quotes are in this sentence.
Fixing the truncating problem is interesting, especially with the forum goofing up my if statements. I guess I'll have to try single quotes and you'll have to change them with square brackets. It's important that the square brackets be a space away from what's inside them. Dump the cd line and replace it with:
    USER=$(who | grep console | awk '{ print $1 }')
    DIR=$(ls -1 | grep $USER)
    if ' `echo $DIR | wc -w` -gt 1 '
    then
    echo "FAILURE!"
    exit 1
    else
    cd /Users/$DIR/Desktop
    fi
This code will bail out if it can't find a single user directory. I doubt it will work well if the short names have spaces either. Be careful of the back-ticks in the if statement! They are significant.

  • Can't open FCP 10.0.3 files on laptop with Mavericks 10.9.2

Hi, has anyone come across the following problem? I have been working on an event in a film class using 10.0.3. That computer runs on Lion Os I think. I have copied those files onto my Macbook Air, which I recently updated to Mavericks 10.9.2. I then tried to open copied files on that laptop using FCP 10.0.3 and I am told "file cannot be opened". Why? Is this because of my OS? If I were to upgrade to a more recent version of FCP will that solve the problem? Although I then can't continue to work on those files in class for obvious reasons.

You don't open projects in FCP X.
    Depending on your versions:
-for 10.0.x, the projects and events need to be in the appropriate folders, and FCP X will see them.
-for 10.1.x, things are very different; you use Libraries, which can be opened and closed, copied or moved as needed. Libraries contain events, and projects, as well as clips, always exist inside events.
There are very good reasons to update to 10.1.1, especially two: it is WAY better, and old versions do not work well in Mavericks.
BUT you need to understand the new library model - and, from your post, I gather, even the old model too.
Before you do anything, you may be well served to follow some online tutorials.
About upgrading, the free videos from Ripple Training are excellent: http://www.rippletraining.com/fcpx-features.html
About FCP X in general, a great tutorial (using 10.1) is from Izzy Video: http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

  • Auto update of file from laptop to ipad?

Does anyone know if I sync an existing document from my laptop to my ipad via pages, then work on it on the ipad, will it update the existing file on the laptop when I sync overall?

Out of interest Magnus, what did you find that was so 'ghastly' about Docs to Go?
I and many others love the app.
    Just curious.
It is of course very subjective. DocsToGo can do a lot of things, and it probably does some things better and some things less good. If you use it for what it does well, it may be a good choice.
My own personal experience, however, was thorough disappointment. I bought it for one single purpose: to display and edit Google Docs documents. This function was only "available" in the expensive version, so that's what I bought. However, it turned out that "available" did not mean "working" - at least not working well. To make it work at all, I spent a few hours looking for forums and solutions, and it turned out that DocsToGo asks you to switch to the old version of Google Docs. I could not do that, because then Google Docs could not read my older documents, created with the new version. Ergo, DocsToGo was unable to do the only thing I wanted it to do: view and edit my documents.
DocsToGo claims this is due to a bug at Google, and that may be so, but no matter whose fault it is, I paid extra money to DocsToGo, who did not warn me that the only functionality I wanted was unavailable due to this "bug" at Google.
I did some attempts to use it as a local word processor, forgetting about Google Docs. However, it did not impress me there either: the default font was too small for my taste, there is no word auto-completion as in Pages, there is an ugly time lag between you hit a key and it displays in the document, and pretty soon I just gave up. Twelve Euro down the drain. Well, I can survive that loss. I just wish the money had gone to someone who deserved it.
I'm sure some people are happy with the local word processing, and if some friend of mine buys it for that purpose and is happy with it, I will not push for him to switch to Pages.
It is just that to me Pages does some things better than DocsToGo. Where Pages fails, DocsToGo fails as well, so the application satisfies none of my needs.

  • Downloading Files from Laptop to iPad

I recently added numerous files (.mp3 files and iTune purchases etc.) on my Toshiba Laptop via iTunes (which I had previously downloaded to my Laptop) to my Apple/iTunes? library.  All these files appeared in my Laptop iTunes music songs list.  I then connected a USB cable between my iPad 4 and my Laptop and iMatched them.  Not all files appeared on my iPad iTunes music list.
I then purchased iCloud via my Laptop and uploaded all files on my Laptop iTunes music list to iCloud (I think!).  I then turned iCloud ON in my iPad settings.  Now I have clouds with down arrows as well as red circles next to a multitude of files which iTunes indicates are files waiting or progressing to download to my iPad.  The problem I now have is 2 fold: (1) These files have still not downloaded after 2 days even though I have wifi connected! (2) Some files that appear on my Laptop iTunes music list still do not appear on my iPad iTunes music list.  I would appreciate help to resolve these 2 problems.  Additionally, is it possible to view the files stored in iCloud in order to confirm they have arrived there?

    Hi,
I am confused by your comments.
Itunes match and icloud are two different products.
Have you purchased Itunes match and had your music matched or uploaded to the cloud? You cannot manually sync with USB when you have match.
Icloud storage does not back up non itunes purchased music.
Would you please expand on your problem.
    Jim

  • Getting files from laptop to iPad for email

I have been stuck trying to find a solution for this problem.
I have a desktop, laptop and iPad2. My iPad generally syncs with the desktop (which has my photos, complete iTunes library, etc.).
I regularly travel to a location that has no internet access. My laptop cannot connect. However, my iPad does have 3G service in the area and can send/receive email.
There are many times where I have to create a file and send to clients for review. These are primarily PDF files, but sometimes I also need to send graphic files (jpeg, eps). These files are created on the laptop and cannot be created on the iPad.
The problem is - how can I get these files from the laptop to the iPad and attach them to an email?
Laptop is a MacBook Pro. Currently running 10.6.8, but will eventually go to 10.7. It has bluetooth, airport and USB to connect to the iPad. I just cannot figure out how to get the files over and available to mail.
Is there a solution or an app? As it stands, when I am in this "no internet" location, I am unable to work - I can create the files, but not send them to the people who need them.
    Any ideas?

I have Dropbox on my laptop and my iPad.
Dropbox can only email a link, not the actual file. I would rather avoid this extra step for my clients - although if it were the only workaround, I guess I could live with it.
Real problem is that the laptop is offline. Only the iPad is online (via 3G). If my laptop could access Dropbox, I could email the file itself from that machine.
How do I get the file from the offline laptop to the iPad (dropbox or otherwise) so it can be emailed?

  • Transferring file pc laptop - ibook via wireless

    Hi,
I need to transfer files from my ibook to a win laptop.
1)I used a flash drive but got damaged files.
    2)Os 9 can't see my ipod nano!
I've got an airport 802.11b on my ibook and an intel 802.11b/g on the asus win laptop. Can I transfer files through wireless? How?I'm a newbie of os 9
    tnks a lot

A1: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the card in question (someone else may be able to provide you with exact information). Generally speaking however, special Mac driver software is needed for Ethernet cards.
A2: There are some limitations regarding Mac OS 10.4 and certain older systems. Without going into details, you may not be able to use all machines as servers, but it is usually possible to create a connection that will allow files to be transferred.
A3: Yes, a direct connection, typically (depending upon the machines involved), requires a crossover cable. A connection via a hub or a switch (router) will use normal cables.
For additional information, have a look here and here.
There are a couple of alternative solutions. Pro primo, you could try a wireless connection to your existing network. This web page could perhaps be of interest. Secondly, a CompactFlash card (or another flash card) used with an inexpensive PC Card adapter (see, for example, here) would let you carry out the transfers.

  • Copy Itune Music Files from Laptop to Windows Home Server

I just picked up an Acer easyStore unit which runs on Windows Home Server (WHS). This has an Itunes Server functionality and you can see the shared folders from this server in iTunes under "Shared". So, I copied my entire "iTunes" music folder from mu C: Drive on my laptop to my shared music folder on my WHS. Note I did not delete the original files from my C: drive nor have I changed the "Media Folder Location".
Off first glance it looked like all the files and folders copied to the server folder when I check the properties of each folder in Windows (i.e. the properties are identical). However, when I jump back and forth between my "Music" and my "Shared" Libraries within iTunes, it appears that the "Shared" library is less 110 songs (0.5 GB). Why would this be?
    Thanks

Pdf files that downloded in Lumia 525 are not showing in laptop, I downloaded pdf by internet browser and also by uc downloder, plz help me how these files may visible

Windows Phone 8 doesn't have a file manager mate. downloaded files are sandboxed within the app itself. if you wish to open these PDF's is probably best to open it on a laptop/desktop, or try to sync with something like OneDrive.
