File opened in external editor not stored with referenced files

If I open a referenced raw file in an external editor (CS2) and work on the image adding layers etc., the image is not stored where I have all the other referenced files. It gets stored in the Aperture Library. Is there a way around this. I want to keep all my files together. This can be done in Lightroom, but I am trying to make Aperture work for my workflow.
Thanks,

Well, here's the feedback I submitted to Apple:
With the introduction of Aperture 1.5, you offered users the ability to manage their own libraries, and for Aperture to work with 'referenced' images. In fact, because of this very reason, many of us consumers decided to buy Aperture 1.5.
Most of us photographers also use Adobe Photoshop routinely.
But there is a huge problem/bug for us users who manage our own library (force Aperture to work with 'referenced' images) AND use Photoshop (or any external editor for that matter). When we open a file in an external editor via Aperture, Aperture creates a new 'master' for editing -- but does so in its own 'managed' library! When we save from Photoshop, the image remains in the 'managed' library! So now we have one 'master' in our own directory, and the externally-edited 'master' in Aperture's 'managed' library! This is very CONFUSING and renders external editing via Aperture USELESS... no one in their right mind would want one version of their image in an organized directory, and an edited version in Aperture's managed library (where it is difficult to find manually)! No, it makes much more sense to create the edited 'master' in the same location as the original 'master'!
PLEASE fix this bug ASAP! Aperture already has a good method for automatically renaming files by adding (1) or (2) or (3) or so forth when it is relocating files and finds a file with the same file-name. The same logic can be applied when creating a new 'master' for external-editing: that is, it should just create another .tiff (or .psd, or what have you) file with the same name but with a (1) or (2) tagged on. For example, if my master image is \Pictures\Seattle\SpaceNeedle.tiff, then when I open this image in an external editor, Aperture should automatically make the file: \Pictures\Seattle\SpaceNeedle (1).tiff, and open that file in the external editor... rather than create SpaceNeedle.tiff in its own managed library where I can't even find it using Finder or Windows Explorer, etc.
Many of us have this complaint (just search Apple discussions)... PLEASE rectify this problem ASAP as it is completely messing up our workflows by requiring us to manually save through the external editor and then having to manually remove every 'managed' file that Aperture makes. This is really a pain and seriously makes me want to switch to a different image management program... though I love Aperture thus far and would love to stick to it as I believe it is visionary and shaping the future of how photographers will manage their digital workflows!
Many thanks in advance for your time!
Best,
Rishi

• Externally edited image not stored with referenced files?

When I open an image in the external editor, do my work in PS, and then save, the new file is located in the Aperture Library even though the master for the image is a referenced file. Is there any way to change this so the new images will be placed in the same folder as the referenced images? Thanks...gary

I'm afraid for the moment you have to do it manually by selecting the image and going to File/Relocate Master.
We should have and option in Aperture to allow us to have ALL the images in an external location.

• "open in external editor" not working

I use "open in external editor" a lot to edit pictures in Photoshop, but it has stopped working. Now it launches Photoshop, but doesn't open/load the relevant image.
What has changed since I had this working?
I had a couple of kernel panics, and used "archive and install" to re-install Tiger, and then 10.4.3.
I am using iphoto 5.0.4 and Photoshop CS 8.
Any remedies/help gratefully received.

Hi Nige,
It is a Photoshop problem and probably because it is missing files.
this is an old copy/paste from MacFixit it.
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here. If you don't still have the folder then you have to reinstall PhotoShop.

Aperture: When trying to open in external editor I get this warning when going to Photoshop CS6: Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered. I can export and open via Photoshop or open directly from file-just not through external editor. Gerry

Hi gerry,
does this happen for a particular image only, or for all images?
And does this happen only from your account or also from other user accounts?

• The vendor account is not associated with the file you are trying to open. Please try again.

Please help me to understand what is the problem with the set up of the program. I bought an ebook from an internet site to which my IP address was blocked (in country 1). My brother bought it on a computer in country 2  and wanted to download and send me the file so I can open it on my computer. He set up initial download without Adobe ID. Afterwards he downloaded the pdf and send it to me. I tried to upload it  with my ADE reader but it didn't work without ID. My brother then deleted afterwards his ADE and installed it again, downloaded the ebook again but this time setting up an ID. He transferred me the file ,I used the same ID  but then the following message appeared "The vendor account is not associated with the file you are trying to open. Please try again." . Can this be fixed somehow? I cannot open the URLLinks even as there is no connection from my IP , but I have the pdf file ( ebook) but I don't know how to set up the program.

Sorry Everyone this error message appeared in Digital Editions 4 used on a windows 8 laptop.  Thanks Chris

• Open in external editor -- original color space workaround

I was frustrated--like other's whose posts I've read--by the fact that when opening files (tiff, jpeg, psd) in an external editor they are all converted to the Adobe 1998 rgb space.
I am working around this comfortably and by using some Automator actions that I got from Ben Long's Complete Digital Photography site: http://www.completedigitalphotography.com/?p=414#more-414
In my Pictures folder I have an Auto Processing subfolder with Photoshop droplets and lots of 'hot folders' tied to Applescript folder actions. I made two new folders: OPEN in Photoshop & IMPORT to Aperture
The Open in Photoshop folder has attached from Automator the following actions from the default Finder suite: Open Finder Items and Move to Trash.
The Open action is self explanitory, the next step of moving the recently opened file to the trash guarantees that I can't save to the source file. This forces Photoshop to do a Save As even if I hit command + S. The Save As prompts me for a location and I choose the Import to Aperture folder.
The IMPORT to Aperture folder has attached the Import Photos action from Ben Long's Aperture suite. By selecting the Delete the Source Images After Importing Them option and the Show Action When Run option I get a prompt asking what project to add the new files to and the old files are deleted from my hot folder after the import.
This isn't a perfect round trip solution because I still end up with two copies of the image in Aperture--even if I was just opening the source image to tweak an adjustment layer. I might create an Applescript that would prompt the user and delete the precvious copy of the image if desired.
Like many of you I was feeling blue yesterday about rumors of changes in the Aperture team at Adobe. Blue not because I beleive Aperture's going away, instead because I expect if this rumor is true that we will see some delays in the short term while the new team gets up to speed.
While I am waiting for that to happen I intend to use this discussion site to find creative workarounds for Aperture's current limitations and share them as widely as possible. Many of you are already doing the same.
Thanks!

Yes you could do that.
I was part of the alpha/beta test group for Adobe CS2. Most of my work was with scripting and automation, especially for Bridge. I did have a very good dialog with Bruce Fraser, Seth Resnick and other testers whose opinions are as good as fact in my book.
The consensus was that most digital cameras--certainly the pro models--had a color gamut substantially larger than Adobe RGB (1998). Note that ACR give the option of developing an image into sRGB, Adobe RGB, Color Match RGB, or Pro Photo RGB; 8-bit or 16-bit. That's the way I want it in Aperture.
If you use the perceptial rendering intent (this is almost certainly what Aperture is using as its undisclosed default setting) then you will compress the wider gamut of the camera into the smaller Adobe RGB (1998) gamut. If in Photoshop you used the Convert to profile command and choose the perceptial rendering you would probably expand the color gamut back out a little bit. Why bother? Aperture really should have options for open in external editor like the very good export version settings.
I have in my Aperture library a bunch of 16-bit grayscale scans and some CYMK files that seem to be working fine with the workflow above and Automator actions. (Lab files won't import.) I wouldn't want to go through the convert to Adobe RGB (1998) and reconvert to proper space with these files. My workflow is letting my store these files in Aperture and still edit in native color spaces in Photoshop with minimal effort for a round trip. I like it.
P.S. I said in my original post that it would be easy to write an Applscript to delete the orignial file in Aperture when reimporting a slightly modified Photoshop version. It may be possible but its not easy in the current version which only has a bare skeleton of Applescript functionality.

• "Open in external editor" difference in 1.5?

In 1.1.2 I used to open a file in PS2, make adjustments, add layers, etc. and save back to Aperture. Occasionally, I would then straighten or crop in Aperture, and then re-open in PS2 for further edits at a later time. If I remember correctly, when I did this layers would still be preserved when I opened the file in PS2.
However, when I go through the same steps in 1.5, the file is flattened when it is opened in PS2 that second time (after straightening or croppping or whatever in Aperture). Could someone check this on their system and let me know if they see the same behavior (I've been having strange issues with 1.5 that others don't seem to have, so I want to be sure it's not my computer).
Also, is anyone out there still running 1.1.2 that could check the same thing? I may be losing my mind, but I'm almost certain that layers were preserved all the way through.
Thanks,
Chris

Incorrect. They shouldn't flatten PSD files -- in fact with "open in external editor" they never have -- not even in the 1.0 release.
The "flatten" issue was with 1.0 when you imported PSD files into Aperture... and this was because of Aperture's stated goal of "never touching a master file." This (somewhat annoying) behavior was changed in 1.1. But no version, to my knowledge, flattens PSDs that have been created in Photoshop with "open in external editor."
I just tried this with 1.5, and I am able to see and edit the layers I created on a PSD file that I previously created via "edit in external editor" which was Photoshop. So that works fine in 1.5, as it did in 1.1.2 and previous version.
However, I have noticed a couple weird things:
1) It's creating a third version when I do this, from the original master
2) Deleting any version created via this manner pops up a dialog "do you want to delete this master and all versions?" which is disconcerting as I just want to delete the extra version, not any versions. It works as expected, but the dialog could use some work I think.

• Problem opening in external editor

Hello, I am having a problem with photos that I've previously sent through 'open in external editor' in that rather then reopening the photo it duplicates the image and then opens that duplicate. It is only happening on a few photos and is not library wide though frustratingly it happens at random. Sometimes i can get it to work properly by closing and reopening aperture or if that doesn't work by rebuilding the library.
It's quite an annoyance since if it starts 'preparing image for external editor' there is no way that I can stop it and I have to wait for it to copy the photo, open it in photoshop, then I can close the file and delete the duplicate.
obviously for a previously exported photo this is not a desirable, any suggestions?

Hi
Thats the way it works.
You select a photo you want to edit in external editor ie, CS3 either by right clicking & selecting "edit with" > Photoshop CS3 or alternatively by choosing Command/Shift O which opens your external editor.
Aperture duplicates your image and then opens it in your external editor. Any adjustments you make in Aperture or CS3 are then relayed between CS3 & Aperture as you switch between the two.
In Aperture > Preferences click > metadata. put a tick next to tooltips. When you hover over a image now it will tell you that it is a version edited in PSD file format so you know which ones you have edited externally.
A note... In Aperture/ preferences/Export where it says "External Image editor... choose photoshop CS3 if indeed that is your editor from the list. Also, choose External Editor File Format and set your file format to PSD.
PSD supports all of CS3 features, but you can choose TIFF as well if you prefer.
Next to "External Editor File Format" enter a resolution of 300dpi. This specifies that the image is exported between the two Applications with a resolution setting of 300dpi, plenty to work with.
Hope this helps.

• Changing color space when opening in external editor

Hi
Is it possible to have aperture open a raw file in Photoshop in a colourspace other than Adobe RGB and also in 8bit rather than 16bit.
Also I notice that it only saves as PSD or TIFF if you want to have the retouched file linked to the original master. Is there a work around to change this to jpeg but maintain the link to the master file.
Thankyou

OK
I understand why, in the interest of maintaining max file integrity that apple restricts exporting to 16bit and PSD or TIF.
However Adobe 98 is'nt always the best or most convenient colourspace to open a file with an external editor. What i'm looking is the option to change the export colourspace.
PS: I'm only looking for the option when using the 'Open In External Editor' option. I know when exporting files out of aperture that there are many more options.
Thanks

• Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.
Thanks,
Nigel.
As far as Photoshop and ACR go, ALL raw files are treated as read-only.
Your original raw files remain untouched, no matter what you do to them.
Any adjustments you make to a raw file are kept only as metadata (flags, if you will) in that XMP side-car file. Every time you want to re-open that raw image file, ACR will reach for the XMP file and apply the adjustments automatically, transparently.
That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).
Thank you Adobe!

Hi,
The D810 requires Camera Raw 8.6 or later - the latest version that is compatible with Photoshop Elements 12 is Camera Raw 8.5 as far as I can see.
You need to either buy a new version of Photoshop Elements or use the free Adobe DNG converter.

• FDF file opening in Internet Explorer--not in Adobe Acrobat Professional XI

Good morning!
I have created a form in Acrobat Professional XI and have a submit button that emails that data back as an .fdf file.  This is working as it should.
However, on some of the returned emails, the .fdf file is opening in Internet Explorer--not in the associated file in  Acrobat Professional XI.
Is this the default?  Is there a way that I can specify that it always opens in Acrobat?
I looked on line, and found where you have to associate that type of file with Acrobat
I have Windows XP
in My Computer--in Tools, Folder Options, File Types, I have where FDF files are associated with Adobe Acrobat.
Are there other changes that need to be made?
We have a work-around--we can import the file data into the form--just takes a little longer.
I tested this before I posted the form online, and it worked perfect.  Now that it is online, we are seeing some snags...
As always--Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your quick response!
no--it is an fdf file.  Has an .fdf extension.
One difference that I have noticed that the file that is opening correctly (in acrobat) was sent from a gmail account.  The file that is opening in internet explorer was filled out in Adobe Reader XI from an outlook email.
This is the window that appears when the file is opened.
On the Tools--the only items that are accessible from this screen is the AddOnTools--not all the tools sets.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

• PDF files open very slowly or not at all.

I am experiencing an issue on a clients network where most pdf files open extremely slow or not at all. This issue is being experieced by both pc and mac uses, computers on and off the domain. Any one connected to the network. Has anyone seen an issue like this before. We are currently having Cisco troubleshoot the internet router but are not currently seeing any issues there. The isp has indicated that the circuit has tested cleanly. The issue is even seen when trying to download the pdf, it just seems to hang around 80-90 percent of the download.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreceiated.

It MAY be that Adobe software slowness problems are caused by having a network
printer as default... with the cure being to always have a local printer as a
default (you don't have to USE it, just have it set to local as default) and
this may be accomplished by using an Adobe Generic Printer Driver

I'm seeing Symantec in the crash report. Are you running Norton? It's well known for causing problems on Macs. You don't need any AV like that. Uninstall it and see if the crashes stop. Uninstall it whether they stop or not.
