File permission issues

I cannot access any printer plug-ins by going the HD>Library>Printer>Epson>Inkjet route. All the plug-ins are grayed out so I cannot load them. I am attempting to add a printer attached to a windows machine. I followed all the instructions, I can see the correct plug-in, but I cannot load the plug-in.
The second permission issue is moving jpeg files to the DVD or to a windows machine on the network. I am the owner of the files and all the folders are marked read and write. I also have checked windows file sharing.
I have also done the repair permission route.
I am new to Macs, so this is probably a simple ix, it just does not show up in the searches I have made in the Help menu or support topics. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the tip, but I have tried every known fix listed anywhere and still am missing something somewhere. I can access the correct drivers when I connect the epson directly to the laptop and it will work. I can almost access the print drivers if I use IP Print when connecting to the printer across the workgroup. Almost, in that the drivers are no longer grayed-out, but if I select them, I still get generic print driver and it ignores the Epson driver. For some reason, if I try to install the driver for the printer while it is attached to a PC on the windows nworkgroup, using windows print, the print utility will not allow me to use the print driver. It has got to be something silly that I am missing.

  • [FIXED] File permission issues.

    Hi all,
I am unable to save over files without first giving a text editor with root privileges (sudo leafpad file_name).
The permissions state that my user is the owner of these files and that the owner can view, change and access them. I am also unable to open Spotify without first giving it root privileges.
Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can fix this?
    Thank you.

    Hi there,
I was working through what you asked me to do and I noticed something.
The output of ls -l of the files that I am unable to modify stated that I didn't have modification privileges for certain files. I checked the properties through the file manager and it said that it was owned by root and that I could not modify.
The files in question are things like .bashrc, .bash_profile and the rc.lua (awesome wm). These have been copied from /etc/skel and /etc/xdg/awesome to /home/ and ~/.config/awesome/ respectively.
I haven't had much of a need to save over non-configuration files as of yet, and have been using root privileges to do so assuming that there was an issue with all files but after doing your test I could see that there was no issue with other files. I also tried to save over a few others and everything worked fine.
I would consider this issue fixed as a simple chmod fixed the files I was unable to save over. But I'm wondering, is there a way that I can automatically change a file's permission as I copy it from / to my home directory?

  • Apache pdf file permission issues

I have a intranet site that I need to publish some pdf files. I am using a G5, Leopard and apache 2 and PHP. My PHP is just providing a link the pdf documents, but when a user clicks on the link they get a message "You don't have permission to access /PDF/filename.pdf on this server." I don't think there is any apache configuration to change but maybe I am wrong. Does anyone know what this could be?

Clearly Apache doesn't have permission to serve the files (or the directory it's in).
Check the permissions on the file. it needs to be readable at least by the user _www. The directory it's in also needs to be readable as well as executable (Apache can't look into a directory that isn't executable).

  • File permission issues after copying from hard drive

    Hi there,
I've copied my Sites folder (containing lots of HTML, CSS, PHP files) from a Time Machine backup that lives on an external hard drive onto my new MacBook Air running Lion.
Now, I can't edit any of the files. Here are the errors I'm getting:
    http://d.pr/1jlu
I've already tried the following system/preference changes:
Make sure the Time Machine "2 week lock" is disabled
Make sure the folder (and subfolders) are not locked via "get info"
Make sure I have read/write permissions for the folder/files
    See:
    http://d.pr/Iiee
I'm going crazy! Nothing seems to help? What else can I try to get back permission to edit my own files? (Not very familiar with Terminal unfortunately).
    Help please!

That sounds like something's corrupted on your backups. Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that finds and fixes errors, your best bet will be to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That will bring everything back, just as it was, permissions and all.
If that doesn't work, the problem with your HD may have damaged your installation of OSX and/or some of your data, which Time Machine backed-up. So try it again, but choose an earlier backup, from before all the trouble started.

  • File permission issues when sharing project

    Hi,
We are sharing a project amongst two developers that each have an account on a (Windows 7) machine. They are part of a windows group and don't develop at the same time.  All directories and files are in the group and are set to inherit permissions.  After one user develops using Labview, all the files that he saved when using Labview have the group permission removed and the second developer can no longer open the files.  Our sys admins claim Labview is somehow changing the permissions.  Has anyone seen/overcome this?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Where is the file being saved?
No place special.  We have a labview project/ directory under our own directory under C:/ that roots all the Labview project files.
If both users have full access to the directory where the files are being saved, there shouldn't be any problems.  I'm sure LabVIEW isn't doing anything to change access rights.
Both users have full access.  If I create a new file it has the correct permissions (a local group).
I'm concerned about the comment "part of a windows group"?  Most PC's in a corporate environment are part of an actual network domain, and don't use that poorman's excuse for network access rights of a workgroup that Windows seems to want to use for standalone PC's and those not registered onto a network.
I wouldn't be too concerned =)  We have a nationwide federated domain.  The "group" is a local group on the computer for two people specifically to share this labview project.

  • File Permission issues on a windows server after updating

    Hello,
But, I just updated Adobe InDesign and have a problem opening files on the network. This was not an issue until the upgrade.
Strangely, it’s JUST InDesign, opening files on the network. Doesn’t happen to local files, other Adobe products, or the MacBook we have on site.
JUST InDesign on the new iMac and opening files on the network.
I’m stopped the first time and have to try it again. It seems to work every time on the second try.
Any ideas please. I am stumped.

I am having the same issues here. I am also having issues saving a new file onto a server. Along with packaging onto the server. Only started after this update. My coworker is having these same issues after updating as well.

    Hi Zambak,
It looks like you might need to give your JSP permission to delete the file that it is complaining about. One way to do this would be to add a FilePermission to the server's security policy file (located at <PE install dir>/domains/domain1/config/server.policy. Adding the following would grant file delete permissions to all files for all codebases...
    grant{
    permission java.io.FilePermission "<<ALL FILES>>", "delete";
After modifying the policy file, you will need to restart the domain by executing the following...
    <PE install dir>/bin/asadmin stop-domain
    <PE install dir>/bin/asadmin start-domain
It is also possible to further restrict permissions to certain codebases or further open the set of file permissions (adding write, read, delete for example). For more information on how to do this, please refer to the J2SE security documentation loacted at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/security/permissions.html .

  • Possible Corrupt Account or File Permission Issue

I have been trying to find the right area to post this in. I have a 1 month old iMac with all the latest updates. I have been having an issue with only 2 applications of the Adobe CS5 suite (Fireworks CS5 and Acrobat 9). The rest of the apps work just fine and I can see al the plist files and folders created in my user library.
The other 2 applications for some reason get stuck at the splash screen and I can see on Fireworks that its is during the "Initializing User Files" phase. Nothing is being created for these apps. I have uninstalled and reinstalled more than 5 times. I have used the Adobe Cleaner script and made sure that all .com files and any .plist files are not there.
I did create a new Admin User Account. When i log out of my main account and go into this new account all the apps work just fine. So there is nothing wrong with the install, it is my main user account that is not allowing these two apps to do its thing.
I have done the disk utility repair permissions trick and that did not do anything.
Any other suggestions would be great.

No ideas, just that I have a somewhat similar but different problem with Adobe InCopy CS4. One particular computer -- I do what I try to make a complete virgin install, wiping the previous version out with the InCopy uninstaller, running the CS cleaner (it does CS4 and CS3 as well as 5). When I launch the app, it comes up and I can click on menu options (well, the menu options that are active with no file open). Then if I try to Open a file, or New a file, the program hangs and can only be stopped via Force Quit.
This is true in the user's account, and the account with admin privs, and I even turned on the root account and did a delete and reinstall from there, and it still would hang on any file open/creation.
I have multiple installs of InCopy and all of CS4 on various and sundry other user machines, and they work just fine. And after all the uninstall/install cycles I gave up (this user will have to run InCopy from another machine) I installed Photoshop and it worked with no problems.

  • Quicken File Permission Issues?

Vintage 2006 MacBook, The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.
Quicken 2007 is installed.  And I deleted Quicken 2003 as the instructions stated to do. I can find the files to open but the same message appears.  This is happening in other files not associated with Quicken.
I have gone to Get Info and unlocked then I find it locked again.
Is there an utility that unlocks everything?

  • File Permission Issues from Public Document Library In Workspace

    Hello All,
I've scanned through the posts and have not seen this issue.
I've created a workspace for a customer. They are able to login to the workspace with no problem. They can browse the documents and folders under Public Documents no problem. The problem occurs when they try to open a document. They are prompted for windows login credentials. This occurs for anyone using IE, not for Firefox.
We did find one work around for accessing WebDAV via IE, but I'd like them to use the console if possible.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Ray Parente

    Ray,
The issue with IE is that when a document is opened it tries to create a back channel via webDAV to allow the document to be edited in place. This is where the login request comes from and if the customer marks the login to be remembered it will only happen each time they access the document for the first time in a session.
IE uses webDAV but the others just download the doc and it must be resaved.

  • Time Machine restore leads to strange file permission issues

I've had three Mac laptops over the last 8 years. It all started with an iBook. When I bought my first MBP I used the "migration assistant" to move my files over. I started using Time Machine when it was released. I then upgraded the hard drive on the MBP and used Time Machine to restore the data. Later, I bought another MBP and used Time Machine to transition all of my files.
Each Time Machine restore was flawless.
The problem comes from my most recent hard drive upgrade (details are below). After upgrading the hard drive on the second MBP I did a Time Machine restore, which appeared to complete without incident. However a couple of problems, which are probably related, have cropped up.
After clicking on Firefox.app I get "Profile Missing Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
The following message is printed to the console: [0x0-0x31031].org.mozilla.firefox[493]: Error: Access was denied while trying to open files in your profile directory. com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[275] ([0x0-0x31031].org.mozilla.firefox[493]): Exited with exit code: 1
I tried to delete my old profile from ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox and the problem persists. Running /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager results in the same error.
The file permissions on the ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox directory are:
    drwxrwxr-x 2 my_name staff 68B Feb 20 08:31 Firefox
I'm at a loss here because the permissions look correct. When I run the ProfileManager as "sudo" it starts correctly and let's me edit/create a profile for "root".
I've repaired permissions several times, and the disk utility (and Onyx) don't report any problems. A very similar problem occurs for MS Office problems. When I launch Excel (or any other office app) I get an error message saying that the MS Office Database can't be used. Also interesting is that it builds the font cache every time. If I'm not mistaken the font cache and Office database are also stored in profiles, but not under ~/Library
Short story long, after a Time Machine restore some apps can't seem to write profile information, but the file permissions look correct and Disk Utility can't find any problems with my new disk.
Any help or pointers would be great.

You might try the following to repair permissions in your Home folder. Disk Utility does not repair permissions in the Home folder.
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • Migration Tip - File Loading Issues solved by Disk Permission Repair

Had a huge problem with Excel files after migrating old iMac to new iMac via migration assistant using time machine backup of old iMac (external drive). After migration, old excel version did not work but we had alread purchased a new 2011 home version.  Installed Excel 2011 after migrating and none of the Excel files would load on new iMac, from either machine - a pop up message said it could be a bunch of things, read only, etc...  Numbers would access the Excel files, and could export to xls file type, but still the Excel file would not load in Excel.
From a thread suggestion, I ran the Disk Utility First Aid tab Verify Disk Permissions - holy cow, must have been two gazillion permission issues on a brand new machine - selected Repair Disk Permissions once the Verify list came up, and voila, all good on the Excel files now - they load fine.
(I assume that some of you actually know what happens and can explain it - something maybe about "cloning" the account from the Time Machine backup of my old iMac and not using a new account on the new machine, or something.  Whatever, it seems that a new disk should not have two gazillion permission errors and that my migration from the Time Machine backup created them, and Disk Utility fixed them - all except two permissions that did not fix properly: itunes..../iPodUpdater and usr/lib/ruby - I assume those must be managed manually somehow if Disk Utility will not repair.)

    Nice tip/report thanks!
Likely a different User UID owned those files, first user generally gets 501, second gets 502, etc., so as a rule, only one of them would have rights to the files.

  • Weird file renaming permission issues

    Hi!
We have a file rename permission issue. Here is the background:
We created a 2008 R2 DFS namespace called UserData with Read/write share permissions for Administrators, Everyone and System. UserData has been granted NTFS permissions as follows:
Everyone (This folder only): Traverse folder / Execute files, List folder / Read data, Read attributes, Create folders / Append data
CREATOR OWNER (Subfolders and files only): Full control
SYSTEM (This folder, subfolders and files): Full control
Domain Admins (This folder, subfolders and files)
We then enabled folder redirection for users My documents folder through GPO, setting the following:
Setting: Basic - Redirect everyones folder to the same location
Target folder: Create a folder for each user under the root path
    \\domain\UserData
We also unchecked Grant the user exlusive rights to documents.
So, now to the really weird behaviour. We logged on to a Windows 7 (x64) client computer with a user who gets this GPO settings and that is not local administrator on the client. The folder is redirected as expected and we can create, delete and write to
files in anyway we want. We can also rename files if we choose an entirely different name and if we choose a longer or a shorter file name,
but we cannot rename the file to something with the same letters but different casing.
    Examples of what will work:
    "test" to "testing"
    "test" to "cool"
    "test" to "COOL"
Examples of what will NOT work:
    "test" to "Test"
    "test" to "tesT"
    "test" to "TEST"
We the get this error: "File Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from S-1-5-21-220..... to make changes to this file."
Eventhough I'm pretty sure the share and NTFS permissions of the share are correctly set we have of course checked all the permissions when logged in and the user has Full NTFS control and Read/Write Share permissions.
We have encountered the same problem on a customer company as well, with a different domain with no links to our domain what so ever. I have also seen similar problems from other people when trying to find the answer on internet. Here is an example:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/35ced5bb-ab13-4e28-8c48-7c68ce0b775c
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    /Leyan

    Resent discoveries:
If I log onto a Windows 7 (x86) Enterprise I face the same Issues.
If the same user logs on to one of the DFS servers holding the namespace and accesses his folder we experience
    no problems renaming files.
Customer company states that all is working fine when user logs on to a Windows XP with SP3.

  • Permission issues with files put on desktop by Vista

    Hi Folks,
I posted this before and got no response so I'm trying again.
Trying to finally solve an issue that has dogged me ever since upgrading to Lion in the summer. Since installing Lion 10.7 (clean install), I now seem to be having File Sharing issues with a fellow colleague who is on Vista. When trying to open a file placed on my desktop by this user (who has been set up as a "real" network user in Sys Prefs) I get the following message:
"You do not have permission to open the document "Some_Image.jpg".
Contact your computer or network administrator for assistance.
I have to do the following In order to gain access:
    1. Unlock small lock icon in bottom right of Get Info Window
    2. Enter Password in dialog that says "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."
    3. Click the now enabled plus sign below list
    4. Select my self from the list of users
    5. Change privilege to "Read & Write" in Privilege column adjacent to my user name.
Both Vista Machines do this to me although Windows 7 does not. UPDATE: one user has updated his vista install to WIndows 7 and I have this problem again.
I had hoped that the 10.7.3 update would have fixed this problem for me as I read that the update addresses some Networking issues, but it hasn't.
    Any thoughts here?
    Thank you,
    J.E. Flynn

Oddly enough, I can't even seem to provide "Write Only (Drop Box)" access to the Windows clients.
My limited understanding of Widows networking and sharing is starting to rear it's ugly head.
If I set up File Sharing and give the windows client access to a shared folder. It can copy files but still I do not have access to those (as described above).
The only way I can get a Windows machine to access my Mac is for them to type my computers local IP in the Explorer address bar " \\192.168.1.XX " and login as me. Obviously, this is not desirable
All other attempts to login from a Windows client are now failing.

If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
