File Permissions Are Ignored

Hi Maccies,
There are several user accounts on my Mac.
I have a file in /Users/Shared/ where all (user, group, and others) can read & write; and File -> Get Info also says "you can read and write".
In actuality, only when I am logged in as the file owner can I edit the file; when I am logged in with any other account, I get the error message:
You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation (MacOS Error code: -5000)
Again, File -> Get Info says: "you can read and write".
Could it have anything to do with FileVault? I doubt it, because this problem seems to be relatively recent, and I've been using FileVault for a while.
I have Repaired Permissions; yet, the problem persist.
What's the deal here?

The Shared folder has a special permission setting which bars accounts from renaming or deleting files directly inside which they don't own. Some applications rename the original file as part of the saving process.
Create a subfolder and move the file to it from the owner's account.

  • What do I do with this error message: To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.

So I cannot even access the application. It was working fine yesterday and today I get this error message:
To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.
I have changed nothing. All the pictures are there on the computer. Help?!

Reboot.  Close any programs which open at start-up.  Run Disk Utility (you can type this in the Spotlight search field at the right end of your Menubar).
In Disk Utility, select your drive from the list on the left, and click "Repair Disk Permissions".  This will take a few minutes, but should be less than ten.
    Reboot.
Try to open your Library in Aperture.  What happens?

  • HT1941 I have inadvertently changed a file permission setting. When opening Aperture I get the following; Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library make sure it's file permissions are set correctly. I am an old dude new to Mac OS. What up?

I have inadvertently changed a file permission setting. When opening Aperture I get the following; "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library make sure it's file permissions are set correctly". I am an old dude new to Mac OS. Looked in settings but have no idea how to allow file sharing to myself. I have been using Aperture actively for 6 weeks. I'm the only one using this Mac. What up?

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Aperture cannot access this library" followed by "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly."

    Hi,
I am completely confused. I use aperture everyday and today when I tried to open it I got the following message " aperture cannot access this library" then it said to use this library , make sure its file permissions are set correctly"
So i read a bunch of posts and opened aperture while holding down option and command and repaired the file permissions.  it did nothing, when I tried to open aperture I received the same message.   So then i tried opening it while holding down just the option key. This brought up all of my libraries but when I chose the library i use daily the same message came up.
Does anyone know how to fix this and/ or why it is happening?
    Thank you

No idea how to check the format, not familiar with Drobo products. Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so you should be able to see how it is formatted there.
How long has this setup been in use?
Aperture libraries have to be on locally connected drives formatted as OS Extended as per Apple (see Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture for example). While Aperture may work with other setups there is always the possibility that the library will become unusable at any point in time with no warning.
Try to find out the format of the drive and post back. Maybe something can be done but from the error messages you are getting I'm thinking the best course of action will be to restore from backups onto a correctly formatted drive.

  • User's file permissions are broken

Recently, I had to log in under the Admin account on a school computer and seize a user's files as my own to look through them (I manage laptops for a school). I finished sifting through them, and it appears there is no easy way to set the permissions back for the user's folder and all its subfolders. I already tried the "Repair Disk Permissions" functionality. Also, the other user is not an administrator, if that makes any difference.

Yeah, I know. My assistant did some of the work since I left early that day (All I'd done was log into the S-admin account before I left) and I've been trying to reach him since now he's sick... It's been a weird week.
From what I've been able to tell, he did just select get info and change the permissions. However, I haven't been able to get the permissions back to what they should be successfully - in fact, according to this, they are set back to what they should be.
I'm logged in as the user here as he logged in for me this morning.
Although it says that he has custom access, I've crawled through what his permissions are set to and he doesn't have custom access, he is allowed to read and write to his user folder.

  • HT1198 Shared iPhoto library file permissions are corrupted.

I am using the alternative option mentioned in the technote.  The iPhoto library is located in /Users/Shared.
When my wife adds photos to iPhoto from her account, the files have a permission set of 640 (rw-------) on the file system.
When I add photos from my account, the files have a 666 (rw-rw-rw-) permission set.
I found that by using the iPhoto 'Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions' process it fixes the issue..although I'd really like to find the main cause of her files have a 640 permission set.

It may be too early to be confident, however I changed the permissions as follows: Note: the iPhoto Libray resides on iMac A.
    old
iMac A: Users/Shared/Pictures  me: Read & Write, staff: Read Only, everyone: no access
    new
iMac A: Users/Shared/Pictures  me: Read & Write, staff: Read & Write, everyone: Read & Write
    I have successfully:
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account, then
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my account, then
iMac B: Opened the iPhoto Library under my account on another Mac on our network and made library modifications, then
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account.
In each case, iPhoto did not go into "examining the Library, nor did it need to repair permissions". The Library and iPhoto closed promptly without errors or inconsistencies.
I will keep my fingers crossed since it is hard to confidently trouble shoot without a higher level of understanding of Unix permissions and the details of the iPhoto Library.

  • When "Save Link As..." is used, file permissions are changed so that other users of the same computer have full access.

I have a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate, and I'm not sure what's been changed in my Firefox, but now, every time I use "Save Link As...", the user permissions for the file have been set to include "USERS" which is then indicated by an icon in the bottom left corner of the file thumbnail. The icon is of the two people you see under "User Accounts and Family Safety" in the Control Panel.
I do remember a dialogue box coming up saying something about "This file originates from another computer and may be harmful..." or something along those lines when this problem first occurred.
I thought that problem would only occur for files from one website, but now, whenever I try using "Save Link As...", the user permissions for that file are incorrect.
If I open the link and download the file manually, it's perfectly fine.

It seems that the difference between the sites that will open and the one that won't is the Default Authentication provider is set to NTLM on those that open, and Negotiate (Kerberos) on the one that won't. The Authentication Provider for the Default zone
is Claims Based Authentication on all the sites, just site B (which won't open) is set to Negotiate (Kerberos), the others are set to NTLM.
Short term: can I change the provider to NTLM without destroying the site?
Long term: point me in the direction for setting up Kerberos correctly on my server/farm, as from what I can tell Kerberos is the recommended path forward. I'll setup a non-production test site and get it figured out.
    Thanks much.

  • Aperture wont op "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly." error when opening aperture 3.4.5 library.

Have been using fine up until Wednesday this week and suddenly cannot open file at all.
I have around 10K images on drive but file size for library says 0bytes. When I use Alt to open it shows file and shows correct number of versions and originals but then gives the  error re permissions when trying to open.
Have tried the repaire permissions, repair database and rebuild database all give same error about permissions and fail to start.
    HELP!
    Regards
    James.

I think I set it to keep the images in the library not referenced but the drive did contain many pictures before I started using Aperture so i need to bring them into the library.
How large is your library now, and how much space can you afford for your Aperture library on your internal drive?
Or do you have a second exernal drive, that you could format MacOS Extended (journaled) to be able to temporarily host your Aperture library?
Do you need the "Tuxera NTFS" formatting on your external drive to share image files with other systems, or would it be an option to reformat that drive?
If you are more comfortable with a managed ibrary, by all means keep the library managed. Only it needs to be on a drive formtated MacOS X Extended (Journaled). It could be your inernal drive, if you have enough space or a locally connected external drive. Connect it to the fastest port you have; Firewire, or Thnderbolt, a fast USB port.
Move the library there, then import the images, that you now have in separate folders on your externa drive. To prevent Aperture from importing duplicates, enable the option "Do not import Duplicates" in the import panel. If you are lucky, Aperture will recognize many of the duplicates. if you have not changed the filenames.
I have to sign off for the next couple of hours, but will look in later.
    Regards

  • HT3805 I recently upgraded to mavericks on iMac . now when i open aperture I get the message"aperture cannot access this library. to use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly" I have repaid permissions via the aperture first aid.

I repaired the permissions in aperture first aid. I notice my short user name has changed from the one before the mavericks upgrade.

I notice my short user name has changed from the one before the mavericks upgrade.
Then you created a new user account when upgrading. How did you upgrade? Did erase the system and set up your mac completely new? If your short user name has changed, you are no longer the owner of your Aperture library, if it ha been created with your old user name.
I repaired the permissions in aperture first aid.
And after repairing the permissions you can still not access it?
Where is the library located? On an external drive or in your Home folder?

  • Windows 7 ignores file permissions for shared 10.5.8 folder

I set up a shared folder on my Mac using SMB. I also set up an account with limited privileges (read only) for accessing it. The problem is that, while the Windows 7 computer needs the account password to access the folder, once it's accessed the file permissions are completely ignored, permitting to user to change and delete files at will.
Any ideas on how to keep the folder Read-Only?

When you enter the account's password, you are logging in to the Mac as that user, which is why everything is coming up as read + write.
This article indicates that you have to provide the account name and password for SMB sharing:

  • File permissions problem

I'm trying to organise permissions on my server. I have a bunch of .iso files which I mount over nfs but it seems as though no matter what I do, the owner and group permissions are ignored.
Obviously I'm mounting as root. The files are owned by root but I can only mount them when the other permissions are set to rw-. Doesn't seem to matter what the owner and group permissions are set to.
    What am I doing wrong?
    edit:
I'm guessing root runs mount but mount is actually run as something else?
    Last edited by sand_man (2010-01-21 11:28:13)

Hmm it is strange. I can mount an iso locally where root has no permissions at all.
Makes no sense to me. There must be a reason why "other" has to have write permission when mounting over nfs
Is it the network group one needs to be in? I'll give it a try
    edit again:
I think I might just mount the iso on the server and export that. Its essentially the same thing and I'm the only one using it so it won't matter anyway.

  • Unrepairable file permissions OSX 10.6.8

The same list of file permissions are always repaired each time the permissions utility is run. How come? Is it a bad thing?

No, ignore them and trust DU's repair permissions to do its job.  You are always going to see a bunch of messages.
Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
If you don't want to see those messages uncheck the Show Details checkbox.
Why are you repairing permissions at all?  It is generally unecessary.

  • File permissions screwed up after using Migration Assistant

Hi All, just got a new iMac and am having some problems... hoping someone here can help... especially since Apple support is closed on this Labor Day holiday!
So, i just got a new iMac, with Snow Leopard. It will be replacing my Mac Mini, with Leopard.
I used migration assistant to successfully move over all my files and docs and applications from the mini to the iMac. Took 7 hours but I was happy to see that everything transferred over safely!
Now, prior to the migration, I had the same username and password on both machines (eg. BVsmurfette). However, when I ran the migration assistant program, it prompted me to change one of them b/c it said I couldn't use the same usernames. So, I made the mac mini username = bvsmurfettemini.
Once the migration was complete, I noticed that instead of putting all my files into the user name on my iMac (ie. BVsmurfette), it created a separate user folder called bvsmurfette mini.
Thinking it would be silly to have to go into a separate user folder each time I wanted to access my files, I thought, ok, i'll just move all those files into the bvsmurfette folder. so, i dragged everything over from bvsmurfettemini, into bvsmurfette.
However - now i've noticed that all the file permissions are screwed up!
bvsmurfette doesn't have read/write access to any of the folders or files. bvsmufettemini does.
so - i clicked on each parent folder (eg. documents, music, pictures, movies, eetc), and clicked on "get info" and changed the permissions/sharing so that bvsmurfette was the owner, and clicked the "apply to all enclosed items" option. I thought this would automatically change the permissions/sharing of every single file and sub-folder within each parent folder.
To my surprise - it didn't work. The sub-folders and files within each parent still have their old permission settings. Argh! Can anyone please help? I refuse to believe that the only way around this is to manually click on every single file (which i have thousands and thousands of) and reset the permission settings...
Thanks so much in advance for any help and advice.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions..
Open the Disk Utility application. (Applications/Utilities) and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • HT3805 Can't open Aperture, says I need to check file permissions. What can I do?

I was trying to add pictures to my Aperture library from another Aperture library in another account on the mac. When I dragged the file from the shared foder to Aperture it said it was merging libraries. I accidentally closed aperture while I was waiting. Now it will not allow me to open Aperture. The message says Aperture cannot access the library. To use the library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly. What can I do?

Hold down the option and commnad key's while starting Aperture this will open the library first aid window. Select Repair Permissions and you should be ok.
Post back if that doesn't fix your problem.

  • File Permissions in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I have a problem with permissions on a shell script file. Although the file permissions are "-rwxrwxr-x" anyone else in the group, apart from file owner can't execute this file.
    Regards,

First of all thanks for trying to help me. The command line output for:
    --> "+ls -al /tmp/restart.sh+" is "+-rwxrwxr-x 1 admin1 admin ...+"
    --> "+ls -ald /tmp+" is "+drwxrwxrwt 13 root sys ...+".
When anyone else in the admin group, besides the owner of the file, try to execute that file they get the following error: "+error: chmod: warning: can't change /tmp/restart.sh+".
If I change file owner it works properly, but I don't want to change the owner each time the file is used. Maybe it's all about that sticky bit?!
