File-print freezes my applications

I installed printer software and now my file-print function doesn't work in word/excel/email, but i was able to get it to work in textedit. I can use the printer icon and it prints fine. I called the printer company and did extensive checks and the problem is not on their end(hence file-print works in textedit). I think the software did something to my operating system. I tried uninstalling the printer software and that didn't help. Any advice on how to fix it?

Printing freezes many applications

Hi All,
I have a Windows 7 laptop that sporadically experiences program hangups when printing to any printer. It's not just one program, it happens in Office 2013, Acrobat XI, even the Windows photo printer. But it doesn't hang "low-level" apps like notepad.
It will occur when printing to any of the various printers on the network (some Canon copiers, and several HP LaserJet colors), and even printing to the Adobe PDF printer and a usb-attached HP laser printer. Rebooting solves the problem for a few days, and
printing works fine, then it resurfaces and I cannot print until another reboot. It seems to be a problem with the Windows printing subsystem rather than any specific application or print driver. I've run an system file check which came back clean. I've never
seen anything like this and I'm pretty much stumped.
Anybody have an idea?

Thanks for your reply. No there are no related events in the system or application logs other than the "Application Hang" event identifying the program which I had to close forcibly. Unlinke "App Crash", this event doesn't include any helpful clues or point
to problem DLLs or anything. I've thought about removing all print drivers and starting over, but that doesn't seem like a strong lead since it occurs with various printers and virtual printers like print-to-PDF or XPS.

Print Window will not show - freezes whole application

I have a mac mini running tiger which will not print in ANY application. When I click file>print, the print window will not come out and the application freezes, and I have to force quit it. This happens in every application when I try to print.
Other macs connected to the same printer will print successfully, but the mac mini will not. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

but I skipped the last step (repair permissions after booting from the HD), because I did that step when I booted from the CD's disc utility
Well, DU picks up what the Permissions are from the Disk it's booted from, so though doing it from the Install DVD might get most right, it really needs to be done from the HD.
PS. Depending on the version of 10.4 on the Install Disk, it MAY read them from the HD's Library>Receipts>PKGs, but it's never been cleared up as to what version that might be.
Might let us know if some Permissions were changed if you decide to do it from the HD.

Printing freezes applications

Printing on this machine freezes the application (ie TextEdit) forcing a force quit. I have reset the printing system, added new queues, and tried printing from TextEdit and preview. Both freeze.
I am seeing the warning "No limit for Validate-Job defined in policy kerberos" in the cups log.
I have run routine maintenance on the drive, fixed permissions, cleared cache files.
Revert to previous CUPS version? Any other suggestions? Thanks ...

I cannot print any kind of document using the File Print command on the tool bar of any application, but I can print using the printer icon. OS X 6.8 with HP Photosmart printer. Any thoughts?

When trying to print any kind of document on my wife's Mac Pro, the File>Print Command will not work. She just downloaded an update to Microsoft Office and the problem began after that, but it also applies to other non-Microsoft Applications. However, the print function does work when you use the printer icon in any of the applications. She has OS X 6.8 and an HP Photosmart printer. Thank you for any thoughts.

Did your wife also apply the Feb. 2 Security Update 2012-01 v. 1.0 from Apple? That update contains a bug which disables printing and some other functions in applications that were originally written for the PowerPC processor and which require Rosetta to run on Intel Macs. Fortunately, yesterday Apple released v. 1.1 of the update, which resolves the problem. Run Software Update again to install the revised update.

If you have a link to the URL pointing to the PDF file, you can allow the browser to open it. Then use the print function of the browser to print the PDF document.

I posted this on another thread. See if this works:
1) Uncheck "Backup previous version" in Keynote's Preferences.
2) Make a duplicate copy of your file that has issues and save it.
3) If you still get spinning wheels from switching between apps after editing or 10 seconds of inactivity, manually save with command+s. It may beach ball here but be patient and wait for it to finish! Try editing and resume doing work now.
Command+s may be a bit slow but I think that might be normal since the files are so big.

I can't print CS5 files from my Mac OSX (Mavericks). CS5 crashes when sent to print. Can print from other applications (Word, etc.).

I just tried installing them. I got the message that "Some updates failed to install" (including for CS5), to quit and try again. I was curious and tried again to print and lo and behold, I could print! I'm still nervous that not everything installed and wonder how to get a complete install.

Applications Crashing on 'file' 'print'

Since upgrading to Leopard, I've had Safari, Firefox, Adobe Reader, and Preview, all crash consistently if I select 'print' from the 'file' menu (or print from a print icon).
Surprisingly, all Microsoft Office v.x apps will print.
I was originally suspicious of my HP Photosmart Printer, but am now not so convinced of that (with Word/Excel printing etc.) I've reinstalled the printer several times. I've deleted Adobe Acrobat reader and Flash from my computer, and to no avail.
During my experiments, I crashed my browser by selecting 'file' 'print' (as usual) without any printer installed. This along with the fact that the application crashes at the moment print is selected, leads me to believe that the problem might reside outside of the printer drivers - and well, some place else. (I would not think that your app would crash if no printer was installed)
Here's the latest crash log - prior to deleting Adobe Reader/Flash, I was getting a 'FlashPaperPDE' message from Safari - I no longer see reference to that in the crash log - but am not sure what direction to look now? Any ideas???

Then check the repair permissions box in "Maintenance", all the boxes in " Caches" and the "Launch Services" in Rebuild .... Then execute
Restart ...
Repair your disk every 5 or 6 months ... and run this app every couple of weeks and it should keep you healthy ...
Remember ...Before ANY system or security update ..
1. Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse
2. Make sure sleep and screensaver are disabled .
3. Quit all open apps ..
Also ... when 10.5.2 comes out I recommend installing the Combo Udpate from Apple rather than going through software update and the standalone install ...

Issues with printing PDF files from an ADOBE application

When printing PDF files from an Adobe application, some of the characters are lost and do not print. What can I do?

Please don't post the same question multiple times!

Application Quits upon file/print command given

When I command file then print the Mac quits the application. From Safari and from Entourage the applicaiton quits when I click the " print " icon or go to file print.

Possible fix:
I am using a HP all-in-one Deskjet F380
Everything worked fine in Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and no matter what application I was in(Safari, Mail, Word) and I clicked file, print, the application would quit. A message box would appear that said "...be a problem with hpaio_print2pde Plug-in". Well, after reading a bunch of threads and talking to Apple and having them tell me to contact HP, I finally did this and it worked:
made sure the printer was on and plugged in to the computer
went to the apple in top left corner
clicked system preferences
clicked Print&Fax
Highlighted the printer HP Desk Jet F380
clicked the minus button to remove the printer
after it uninstalled the HP DeskJet F380, I clicked the plus button and to add it
everything has worked great since I reinstalled the printer

KDE4 apps freeze when selecting File - Print

Well, I've followed the Wiki directions and installed kdemod (KDE 4). Currently, whenever I try to print by selecting File -> Print from within an application, the application just hangs (I never get a print dialog), and I have to kill it. Cups seems to be set up properly through the web interface, and I can print test pages on both of my printers from there. I'm on my second time installing Archlinux, because I could find absolutely no info online about this problem and thought I must have really borked something.
So, the second time around, I decided to keep a close eye on when the problem arose (installing only a couple programs at a time), since I didn't have the problem before installing additional software. Each time I'd install a program, I'd reboot and then try printing from Konqueror. Each time it would work, until after I installed truecrypt and yakuake, and then I began having the problem again. I would suspect truecrypt rather than yakuake at the moment, but uninstalling both packages didn't fix the problem. Furthermore, I can't remember if truecrypt brought down any dependencies
I seem to be the only person having this problem, if I can judge by the complete lack of info online about this (at least that I can find).

Okay, so when the application hangs while printing, no error messages are written to either the .xsession-errors or the cups log. Opening the system monitor (CTL-ESC) I see no tasks taking up CPU or unusual amounts of RAM. If I kill the frozen application, some lines are written to the .xsession-errors file, but I'm not sure if they are helpful or not. Regardless, I have posted them below.
The application hangs immediately after selecting Print from the File menu. After selecting Print, the file menu disappears, and a blank patch of grey is left in place of the menu--it never gets redrawn. If I move any windows over other areas of the frozen application, those areas do not redraw either.

Printing freezes the iMac

Hi. When I try to print from any application, that application freezes and I have to Force Quit. In System Prefs, when I click on Print & Fax, same thing. System Prefs freezes and I have to force quit out of that too. Any ideas on how to reset the printer etc.? Thanks.

/Applications/Utilities/Console. That will have a list of log files on the left, and you can check the main logs and the CUPS logs to see if anything jumps out.
This thread had a similar problem, though you'll have to make it specific to the printer brand you are using. Look for the part that talks about the printers.conf file.

Client printer on oracle application server

Hi all.
I configured my own system on oracle application server and I connected my printer on client machine.
When I wanted to print through the application server on the printer I did not print.
Please could anyone shows me where is the error file (for the printer) located in oracle application server to check the error.

No. Not only it isn't certified, but it is also impossible to run forms compiled with the 11g compiler with the 10g runtime. For 11g there is a install bundle for the developer suite / application server.

Cannot print from ANY application after upgrade to 10.4.8 !!!

Hi all,
as it is written in the subject.
Up to yesterday, I had OS 10.3.9, everything ok, could print from any application.
Then I moved to Tiger and to the last version (10.4.8).
And today the "nice" surprise: either from Preview, Texshop, Word, any web browser... I cannot print anymore!! As soon as I go to file/print, the application crashes, any suggestions??

Hmmm. It sounds like a possible problem with the system prior to updating. If you've done this already don't be upset by the suggestion. I'm just trying to cover the bases.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
Download the standalone 10.4.8 Combo Updater (be sure to get the correct version - Intel or PPC - for your Macs. Reinstall the update using the Combo Updater.
As an added precaution I would recommend you first boot into safe mode before doing the above.
There is a shareware utility called Printer Setup Repair (www.macupdate.com) that you can also try. It is sometimes very useful for fixing problems with the printing system.
