File properties in finder

Why is it that sometimes when I click on a video or photo in finder that it is unable to read the video/image properties (dimensions, duration) unless I choose the Get Info option from the right-click menu, and other times I can choose the same file and the properties show in the preview pane?
Is this normal behavior?

Hi there...
it would seem that people are increasingly reporting this issue. See my thread here;
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1377284&tstart=0
and others such as these;

Hopefully Apple will look at what is going on here.
You'll see in my thread the funny thing is you can fix the issue when you open/view the files in QuickTime but a lack of view setting options in iTunes means that the same can't be done there.

  • File Properties: Document Kind... Where Does it Come From?

In Bridge's metadata subsection "File Properties", what exactly
is "Document Kind"? Is it synonymous with the file's mime type?
I've read through Adobe's XMP specification document (http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/xmp/sdk/index.html) and I've seen many of Adobe's XMP schemas and data elements defined there, but I can't find where "Document Kind" is defined.
The closest I come is page 39 where the XMP specification notes that the dublin core schema has a property called "format" with a value of "MIMEType". Is "dc:format" synonymous with "file properties: document kind"?

  • File properties: mysterious dates for created, modified and last opened

I've seen this ever since I started using my Mac - I am a relatively new Mac user (a year or more vs. well, decades on Win/PC).
Finder: click on a file and it will show its properties. It will have a "More info" button.
The dates displayed between the 2 above are different.
    1) In the "immediate" display it would say something like:
    Last opened: Today at 10PM
    - this wrong day, "correct" time
    - considering that it will display this at say 7AM "today"...well, it's a "future" date/time
    2) If you click the More info button, the "truth" comes out
Last opened: Yesterday at 10PM (accurate)
Never really cared, but thought I'd ask here. At some point, if I start some development on the Mac, and filesystems, file properties are involved, this will obviously be an issue. I don't even know if this affects file searching based on these properties - again, new user, using Mac for very specific purpose, but usage is definitely on the rise, so I'd like to get some direction on very basic OS behavior like this fully understood.
Thanks and happy new year to all!

  • Author metadata separated by semi-colons truncated in file properties and "Get Info"

I'm using Acrobat Professional 9.0 (CS3) for Mac to edit the metadata for a collection of PDFs to be made available on the web. When I enter the data, I am inputting a list of authors separated by commas, like this: Smith J, Watson C, Brown J. If I click on "Additional metadata", the data I've already entered is transposed into the various XMP fields. And the commas separating the author names are changed to semi-colons. I gather that this happens because XMP wants to separate multiple authors with semi-colons, and Acrobat wants the metadata in XMP fields to match the metadata stored for the file properties. Fine.
However, if I save such a PDF and then use Get Info on my Mac (OSX 10.4) to look at the file properties, the list of authors is now truncated where the first semi-colon appears. The list is also truncated in Windows XP if I right-click and select properties. The list is also truncated when I look at the file properties in Preview on my Mac, or if I look at file properties using FoxIT, or using Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 or earlier. The only way a site visitor will actually be able to view the full list of authors in a file saved this way is to use Adobe Reader version 8 or later.
I would like to preserve XMP/Dublin Core/etc metadata in the proper format in the XMP code, but would also like users of standard, popular file viewers to be able to access the full list of authors. Is there a way to do this with Acrobat 9?
Also, once I've saved a file and the XMP metadata has been altered, Acrobat seems to permanently change the way that the authors are listed in the file properties. I cannot manually change those settings any longer without Acrobat overriding my changes and converting commas to semi-colons, or surrounding the entire list of authors in quotation marks. Is there a way to get around these Acrobat overrides and manually take control of my metadata again?
Does Windows Vista read the authors list correctly in the file properties if it is separated by semi-colons?
It seems to me that in an attempt to get XMP metadata working smoothly across the entire CS line, Adobe has jumped the gun somewhat and is now forcing Acrobat users to use "file properties" metadata that is really only fully compatible with Adobe products. Is there a way I can get some backwards compatibility on this?
Thanks for any suggestions or insight anyone can provide to this vexing issue.
    Phil.

Bridge has some pretty powerful and helpful features. However, I am unable to figure out how to access the non-XMP "file properties" fields through Bridge, and if I add metadata via Bridge, then I run into the same problem regarding the use of semi-colons to separate authors.
If I had more time, or a larger set of files I might investigate the use of ExtendScript to import all my metadata from an Excel file (where it already exists) into the PDF file properties and XMP metadata.
The best solution for my case though appears to be to use Acrobat 9 and to do the double-edit process for each file. I should be able to just cut-and-paste the metadata from the Excel file, and then if I save the Authors list to the end, I can simply paste it once into the XMP field (through the Advanced metadata button) and then return to the regular file properties page and paste it again in there, where Acrobat will add quotes around it.
Lastly, if anyone else happens to find this post and is looking for similar information, I would recommend searching in the Bridge forum as well as the Acrobat forum.
    Phil.

  • How do I set file properties (win XP) ?

Does anyone know how to set/modify a windows file properties inside Labview ? For exemple : change the author, the comment... etc.
    Thank you !

    Hello,
It is not possible with advanced file I/O LabVIEW VIs.
There is a possible workaround by using low level Windows functions in a dll.
Perhaps the easier would be to set your properties at the top of your file.

  • Unaccurate file properties (size, weight)

    Hello,
Bridge displays unaccurate properties of files. When I compare the same picture in Bridge and Apple Finder, the same file has different properties, such as size (Bridge seems to show an older version of the file?) ,weight and resolution.
I've tried purging the cache, but nothing changes. I've also tried opening the same folders and files in two different computers (Win and Mac) and I have the same problem with Bridge.
Another strange thing: When I open a file with inadequate properties from Bridge to Photoshop, it opens with the same wrong (old?) properties! While the file opened in Ps from it's actual location opens with accurate properties.
Why doesn't Bridge refresh the files properties?  What did I miss?
Below is a picture of the comparison of the same exact picture from the same folder, opened in Bridge and Finder.
(On Windows, I have the latest version of Bridge CC and Photoshop installed, and on Mac I have Bridge and Ps CS 5.)
Thank you so much for your answers.

    I edited my message,
Yes I saw that later on. Problem is, I mostly use email to follow this forum and edits are not send again as a new post, nor do I get a warning the post is edited. Hence I did not see it but had your original message still present in my mail
You mention not using ACR for cropping or resizing purposes, may I ask what's the best way in your opinion?
Personally I use fixed sizes in PS. Standard size, square and 2/3 and 1/3 for panorama. I also use the shortcuts Front image (I) and Rotate (X) if needed when cropping. There are a lot of options in the crop settings and also a lot with Right mouse click menu in active crop.
I also use the resample option to keep the same ratio and pixel size. This might sound scary for some people but over the years PS has made a great job of massively improving image interpolation. So in this way I end up with same ratio and size of files which provides me a nice overview and about the same file size for PSD and Tiff (for me with EOS 1DX 18 MP in 8 bit around 50 MB each.
I know it is not non destructive but if needed I can always go back to the original DNG file. And I use limited settings in ACR because most of my edits are done in PS with actions that create lots of adjustment layers and layer mask to make editing very easy and fast with stunning results. Especially using many sliders all the time is very time consuming and boring
Personnally, I use a combination of both ACR and P; but, just like you, I find ACR cropping presets "lousy", but I do like the fact that I can overview several files, or a whole folder at a time, and setting my resizing in just one click, while in PS I'd have to go to each file individually to check my resizing. (In the case I want my picture to go from rectangle to square, for example), which, when you have hudnreds of picture to resize, is impossible.
Everyone has it own needs for a specified workflow so you always have to find the one that suites you the best. You can indeed use one click to apply ACR settings for crop to all selected files so for that ACR is the best one.
You couldn't even script the process in PS, because each picture has to be checked individually, in case you crop too much of the subject.
To a certain extend you can, open a bunch of files (depending on size max 20 or 30 for fast processing) and just create a new action, name it and start record your wished crop and apply, stop record. Then undo this on the first file, Choose menu file / automate / batch and start the acton on the opened files. As long as the files are still open you can always undo. For a proper oversight use menu Window / Arrange / Tile (adjust one file to fit in the window then same menu but Match all (I have created shortcuts for this myself) and you see them all in one screen
Besides the overview of my resizing, what I also like and never found in PS is that I can set a limit to my file weight during a saving process of a batch of files. Unfortunately, this option doesnt comme in the batch processing of Photoshop, not even the image processor. But mayve I'm missing something?
Again, to a certain extend using fixed pixel amount and save as Tiff or PSD file size (that is what you mean with weight I presume?) will be in about the same range. But when it comes to jpeg this is just not possible. Take two images of the same pixel amount, one with much grey or 3/4 blue sky and one with for example a wild flower meadow. Use jpeg 10 on both for example and the one with the flowers will have probably 20 to 40 % more KB or MB just because the difference of the many colors in the subject. Jpeg means compression which means deleting surrounding pixels that look the same as the middle one, reopening the file will calculate those pixels again and shows them about properly. The higher the quality of compressing the more accuracy you get. The many different colors need to keep far more original pixels then the blue sky or grey wall

  • Report file properties dialog on MS Vista

    Post Author: DCox
    CA Forum: General
My company runs and distributes CR v11.x as part of our application currently running on XP.  We are migrating our application to Vista.  Our application, written in PowerBuilder v10.5, reads some of the user-defined file properties of the report (.rpt) file via the OLE API.  On XP, the specific properties I need to see are on the Summary tab of the properties dialog you get by right-clicking the .rpt file in the XP Windows Explorer.
Our application uses the Title, Subject Keywords and Comments properties in XP to build a Tree of available reports in our application.  These properties are not displayed in Vista's property dialog for CR report files built on XP and copied to Vista.  Is there a version of CR that will display these properties?  Our application retrieves these properties on Vista but they are not visible in the Vista properties dialog.
Also, is there information about the CR API (for Vista) that will show me how to access the MS OLEDocumentProperties SummaryProperties and CustomProperties?
    Any assistance is appreciated.

That is an excellent find. I would definitely let Apple know.

Then I would look at microsoft.com to see what API functions are used to get the information you desire.

  • Is it possible through labview to set and read window¿s based file properties?

Any file in XP operating system has file properties associated with it, such as, size, location, when the file was created, modified and last accessed. I know that Labview has the ability to access the size and modified property. Other file types such as image format types jpg, bmp and tif have additional associated properties such as: title, subject, author, and comments. Is it possible through labview to read and set these properties programmatically?

Well, you can most probably do that by calling Windows API functions.
Note however that the properties you mention are not generic Windows
file properties but file specific internal attributes. Explorer does at
least in XP handle some of those properties and shows them to the user
but does so with internal file type handlers to extract the properties
    from the file.
I'm not sure those file type handlers are actually available for other
applications than Explorer without quite some work. If they are
available they are certainly not part of the standard Win32 API but most
probably part of the Windows shell component and I would guess not just
through normal API function calls, but through the shell namespace
enumeration, which is built on COM interfaces, something you only can
call from standard programming languages, most of them are done in C++
(and if you are a little more persistant in standard C).
So you are likely to need to either write your own DLL doing the nitty
gritty work of calling the shell interface and using that DLL in LabVIEW
or find an Active X component which does the work for you. No doubt
there is such an Active X component somewhere but how good and expensive
    is always a big question.

  • Metadata - File Properties - Dimensions (in inches) Doesn't Match PS

This has been troubling me for some time now. The info in
    CS4 Bridge Metadata/File Properties/Dimensions (in inches
) never matches what I see in Photoshop CS4. The pixel dimension in Bride is right but not in inches.
I'm talking about plain jane .jpg's and .png's in particular. For instance, a png file that has:
    Dimensions: 2100x1500
    In Inches: 8.8x6.3
    in Bridge
but in PS the inches on the rulers is a perfect 7x5.
This proportion of difference is the same from file to file. The larger the picture/image is, the more difference there is from Bridge to PS.
What gives? Why can't Bridge get the inches correct?

Thanks for the comeback CurlyY. The image is really a 7x
    5. Divide out the pixel dimension by 300 (dpi)
and it is 7x5. This is not an image taken by a camera. It is a public domain template for PS.
If I look at this info from an image I took with my Nikon D700, everything matches up.
I only find this difference with 3rd party art work.
I have goobs of .png's and .psd's I've collected over the years and I plan to use Bridge's Output workspace to create printouts so I can find templates I want for whatever reason (seniors, families,...). I plan to put the inch dimension into the filename but the inch dimension in Bridge is incorrect, and I don't want to have to load hundreds of templates into PS to get this info.

  • File Properties using PL-SQL

    Hi Experts,
Basically we have a data source that is in the form of an external file(.csv). So we are trying to automate a process. If any new .csv file appears in the Directory, then automatically a procedure/function is called.
Now, the job will be executed only if the already existing file has new set of data. Hence i found a way to identify that whether its a new or an exisiting file. The last modified date of the file will change *(On Windows, in Directory if we view all the details of the list we get modified date, size etc...)*
However, I am unable to find the way to retrieve its modified-date using pl-sql.
    Could anyone please help me...

The load can complete first (and likely with the last line as a bad row) and only load the file partially.

However, I am unable to find the way to retrieve its modified-date using pl-sql. Not a robust approach. It can be done (determining the file properties, including time stamps) using a Java stored proc for example, than can be called from PL/SQL.
However, I would be hesitant to implement this approach into production as it is not robust enough. How is that file delivered? Why can't the delivery process not inform Oracle that the file needs to be loaded? Why can't the deliver process not start SQL*Loader and drive the load process instead?
I would rather be looking at making that file delivery process intelligent - instead of attempting to "detect" new or changed files from PL/SQL.

    Fabian,
thanks for you help regarding the update manager.
Here some more infos re the GNOME problem:
I have installed Sun Solaris 10 x86 from the scratch on another machine, applied all patches sorted by release date.
    Here is the result:
Patch 118919-19 installed --> reboot --> no problem with GNOME
Patch 124207-02 installed --> reboot --> no problem with GNOME
Patch 122213-13 installed --> reboot --> problem with GNOME
Patch 122213-13 uninstalled --> reboot --> no problem with GNOME
The interesting thing is also, if patch 122213-13 is installed, that after trying to open the file properties window in GNOME always the file browser window appears instead.
Unfortunately I am not an expert to find out what the root cause for the problem could be. Do you have any idea?

  • File properties cannot be set anymore?

    Hi,
I have an application reading custom file properties (name/values accessible using dsofile.dll) to take actions on the processing of these files.
Using win xp/vista, right-click on file, there is a tab "custom" where file properties/values can be added.
In win 8.1 pro: no file properties available, and no way to add them! If I go to work, I can add properties, but these are NOT accessible using dsofile.dll.
If I take a file from old computer, copy it to new one, there is a custom tab and I can view file properties. But no possibility to edit them nor to add properties to a new file.
Any hint? Is it a deprecated feature / regression? Do I have to install  something (component, ...)?
