File renaming: no undo, no original, no go back?

Ugh, I renamed and don't like it.  There is no edit>undo rename.
I wish I could just start over.  There is no "original filename" choice.
"Preserved filename" is now the new stuff.
I wanted a sequence numbering on the original file name
so flash could interpret the items as a sequence and bring them all in for me
in key frames, for a slide show, no work.  Instead, the sequence numbering went
on the end of the file name without a " - ".
The original file names are the camera numbers so there is really no apparent sequence.
Now I gotta rename every one individually?

When you rename one file you can use the cmd Z to undo, for batch renaming
this is not working. You can use batch renaming (tools/batch rename) for
renaming multiple files to what ever you want. Use the plus signs to create
more optionfields, like date created / current filename or a text field with
whatever you want / sequence number etc. etc.
There are almost unlimited ways to rename.
Mind that you should stay with the alphabet and - or _ sign, the dot (.) is
only used in front of the file extension and a comma or an empty space is
also not a good idea
In Bridge you can select the multiple files and use a filter method for date
created, size, dimension in ascending or descending order.
You may even place them manually in the right order. Then go to batch rename
end use a sequel number with 2 or more digit depending on the amount of
files.
The option preserve filename put's the last name in the Exif data but you
cant extract them (at least not that I know of) in an easy way. But as said,
you can rename them every time again using batch renaming, it is very easy
to use and very useful once you have discovered the power of its function
The original file names are the camera numbers so there is really no apparent
sequence.
Now I gotta rename every one individually?

  • Files Renamed when importing to LR4 and now can't find them in LR3

    Help!  What should I do???
    Yesterday I installed LR 4 Beta.  I had a folder with 300 images in it on LR 3, obviously all files had names.  I imported these photos into LR4 to work with LR4 and they were renamed in the process.  Now in my LR3 folder, all the files still have there old names and the "missing photo ?" and I assume that's because the name has been changed and LR3 can't find them.  Any thoughts on an easy fix?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

    Thanks so much for helping me with this.
    I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
    group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem.  Now that I look at the
    import settings that were used:
    1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
    also renamed.
    2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
    Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
    changed LR4 names.
    1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
    1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
    1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
    1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
    I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
    original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
    imported yesterday and are renamed.
    Thanks again,

  • Restoring from backup to new location + not wanting files renamed

    Hi there - I am a newbie to this forum.
    I have a Win XP machine that recently needed to have the hard drive wiped and the OS re-installed. Fortunately I had a recent backup of all my data so I'm in a good starting position for a restore. However I have some questions as the re-install of the OS has had a change in profile name.
    Before my machine was wiped, I had a "Daniel" profile and so my "iTunes Media folder location" was set to C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\My Documents\My Music.
    After my PC was rebuilt, a new profile was created called "dnl". iTunes has been re-installed (version 10.1.2.17). The first time I launched iTunes the "iTunes Media folder location" was set to C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music. I did NOT choose to have iTunes browse/load my files and so currently iTunes shows no files or playlists.
    I have recreated the C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\My Documents\My Music folder from my backup so all the music files and the previous libraries are presently in this location. However even if I change the "iTunes Media folder location" within iTunes to point to the "old" location, it doesn’t find the files or libraries.
    I have tried deleting the following files from C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music\iTunes:
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    I did this assuming that the next time iTunes was launched, it would refer to the old location (as specified as my "iTunes Media folder location"), find the old library files there and use them. However it seems to ignore them and simply re-creates the files above in the location I deleted them from.
    So…I am unclear as to the best strategy to have iTunes point back to the old location to find the music files and retain all the playlists I had.
    I found this thread: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364. It mentions a method that will find all the files in the old location and move them to the new location, retaining playlists, artwork etc. Once the data has been copied, it advises to delete the files from the original location.
    However I see that it mentions checking the ‘Keep iTunes Media folder organized’ option. From reading other threads I know this to be a source of one very irritating problem – it renames all the file names. I have specifically ripped my music using software other than iTunes for the express purpose of being able to tag the filenames with more specific info than iTunes would. I like the files to named <artist>-<album>-<track no>-<track title>.<file extension> and am not a fan of the very basic filenames that iTunes assigns.
    So…I want to have iTunes simply point back to the old location and not do any file renaming. I am happy enough to have iTunes simply point to a location that isn’t technically part of my current profile. I don’t have a desperate need for the files to be moved to the dnl profile.
    So…I am guessing there has to be some other file (or registry setting?) that knows where best to point to? Can this modified?
    I would be appreciative of any assistance.
    Thanks!

    Hi Daniel, welcome to Apple Discussions.
    The default location for the iTunes library folder is <Profile><Music>iTunes with the media folder at *<Profile>\<Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media*. For XP the <Music> folder is My Documents\My Music.
    When iTunes starts up it looks for a set of library files in the last location it used. If that location is also the default location and it can't find the library files it assumes it has just been installed and creates a new set.
    Changing the location of the *iTunes Media* folder in preferences does not change which set of library files it opens, nor will it automatically detect all the media in that location.
    Ideally you should restore the folder iTunes and all its subfolders from your backup into *C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music* and start iTunes. All should work perfectly and, as far as iTunes is concerned, you will be using the same library as you used to. Any iDevices should sync without problems.
    If you media was not is the usual locations or you are unable to restore the entire iTunes folder then things become more complicated. Post back if you still have trouble and I will try to go into more detail.

  • I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files)

    I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files

    You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
    The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
    The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
    The song file has been deleted
    The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
    If you use an external drive, a change in drive letter is a common cause and you need to change it back.
    AS a way of working out what has happened, right click on a track and select the summary tab (you will have to go past an error message). The summary tab will tell you where iTunes thinks the track is located. How does that compare with where the track actually is?
    The xml library file is not used by iTunes, it is created to allow other programs to access the library. You can recreate the iTl file from the xml file, but there is no point if the location of the files is wrong.
    There is a simple way of getting you music back in iTunes, but it loses all playlists counts and rating. To do this drag iTunes library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to your desktop. Then open iTunes and an empty library is created. Add you iTunes Media folder to it.
    If you can't work out what went wrong and how to fix it, you may have to do this.

  • Custom File Renaming Template Keeps Changing

    I'm having issues when creating a custom file naming template in Tiger with LR 1.3.1.
    When importing files, I created a custom template to rename the files with YYMMDD_{original file suffix}{Master}.tif to get this: 071217_12056Master.tif. The first import goes fine. But when I import another batch of files and choose the template all I get is 071217_Master.tif.
    I tried creating the template by hitting F2 to rename the photo and get the same results. The really odd thing is that some of the other templates have their characteristics jumbled around so that what I thought was the "orig file-name" template might actually produce something like 071217_.tif.
    The original file suffix suffers the worst in terms of disappearing without cause. This behavior was occurring in the 1.2 ver. as well. I've deleted every single template thru the editor, recreated them again and still get the errors.
    Hopefully someone here can provide some clues?
    Thank you!

    It sounds as though your import preset either isn't working or wasn't setup correctly.
    Using the full screen import panel, make sure Copy or Move is selected and then select your Import Preset....what does the File Renaming panel look like? "Rename Files" should be ticked, Template should read "Custom Settings" (or the specific rename preset if you've saved it) and the sample should show the correct rename format, like so:
    So does yours look like this, or different?

  • LR 5.7.1 File Renaming start number field is missing

    Installed Lr CC 5.7.1 on a MacBook Air OS 10.10.2 - in the Lr import window in the File Renaming panel the Start Number field is missing and I can not add a start number to the files?  Any suggestions on what is causing this issue and how to repair this Start Number field omission?

    Sounds like you are looking for the "sequence" field. The "original file number" is also a good one to use.

  • Files renaming themselves

    I have had on ongoing problem with files renaming themselves most often with a numeric file name. It has happened with Quark , Illustrator and Photoshop files. There is no pattern... it happens randomly at different times. File names are less than 31 characters. Sometimes when I have linked files in Quark from Photoshop, the linked names willl change but not neccessarily the file name itself on the hard drive. Sometimes both names change, sometimes only the linked name will change in the usage box in Quark, sometimes the file will rename itself on the hard drive. For instance, a file recently named SPI6007_past_presentadult.qxd has renamed itself on my hard drive as QXP-1055969291.qxp In this case, it has created another file and did not replace the original. This has been an ongoing issue and I have worked at several agencies with several different computers and several different Mac Operating Systems. Any help is much appreciated. Out IT guys are stumped.

    Gary,
    I have had this problem over our network. I transfered a folder with a Quark file and about 50 pieces of art. Most of the art had changed to numbers. I would have been sunk if it were not for the folder still on the server. Still had a lot of changing to do. Other computers on network have not been affected--yet. I have had problems with Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator files changing from app files to Unix files. I have searched the discussion pages and have not found a beneficial solution. One thing I have done is to install Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator on our server. This forces the system to recognize the icons and . I am telling our artists to let the program add the extension and for them not to delete it. This will solve the problem from this point on. We still have lots of art that do not have extensions and will cause problems. One site that was somewhat helpful that I would recommend is www.thexlab.com. You will find some information there about resetting launch services. Good luck.

  • File renaming and second copy

    If I import RAW and tick 'Copy as DNG' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are not DNG and not renamed.
    If I import JPEG and tick 'Copy' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are renamed!
    So why in case of RAWs are the second copies not renamed? This bug precludes the use of more than one camera at a shoot.
    LR3.6
    How come??? I recall this was an old issue; is it too difficult to repair such a simple bug???

    If this is changed, make sure it is a choice as otherwise the copy function is of no use to me. I do not want LR to make changes to the original files that I copy for backup in any way. I use the function for how it was designed (a temporary back up with no changes made to the files from the card) and make back ups of the files in the LR catalog separately. Once everything is safely backed up I can then delete the temporary copies.
    I would guess there are lots of others like me who don't want this situation changed as we have been doing this for several years now since prior to LR 1 when the thing was in beta..

  • File Renaming w/ Illegal Chars

    Hi,
    Making a file renaming program and making it so that the user can't name files using illegal windows characters (|"/\><*?)
    Now I have created a case where it detects the user input if the user inputs illegal chars:
    for(int c = 0; c < file2.length; c++)
                      char[] characters = t[c].getName().toCharArray();
                      String sin = "";
                      StringBuilder sb3 = new StringBuilder();
                      boolean tst = false;
                      for(int g = 0; g < characters.length; g++)
                         sin = "" + characters[g];
                         if(sin.equals("\\") || sin.equals("/") || sin.equals(":") || sin.equals("*") || sin.equals("?") || sin.equals("\"") || sin.equals("<") || sin.equals(">") || sin.equals("|"))
                            sb3.append(sin);
                            tst = true;
                      if(tst)
                         errornumber++;
                         characterError(c+1, t[c].getName(), sb3.toString());
                         defcontests[2] = false;
                      }Now it works for all of the illegal characters, but when the USER inputs / or \ , my case doesn't detect it as an illegal character. What am I doing wrong? The program doesn't recognize my \ and / characters.

    Well, to start with, this might be more simplistic. Since you're only comparing one character at a time, you don't need the strings:
    // starting inside of the c loop
    char[] characters = t[c].getName().toCharArray();
    StringBuilder sb3 = new StringBuilder();
    boolean tst = false;
    for (char g : characters)
        switch (g)
            case '\':
            case '/':
            case ':':
            case '*':
            case '?':
            case '"':
            case '<':
            case '>':
            case '|':
                sb3.append(g);
                tst = true;
                break;
    if (tst)
        errornumber++;
        characterError(c+1, t[c].getName(), sb3.toString());
        defcontests[2] = false;
    }Then, look at the local variable "tst". Its condition is actually directly related to whether or not there are characters in the buffer:
    // starting inside of the c loop
    char[] characters = t[c].getName().toCharArray();
    StringBuilder sb3 = new StringBuilder();
    for (char g : characters)
        switch (g)
            case '\\':
            case '/':
            case ':':
            case '*':
            case '?':
            case '"':
            case '<':
            case '>':
            case '|':
                sb3.append(g);
                break;
    if (sb3.length()>0)
        errornumber++;
        characterError(c+1, t[c].getName(), sb3.toString());
        defcontests[2] = false;
    }And that works just fine for me. I tested a few strings using that code and, each time, the thread entered the if block at the bottom if any of the character cases appeared in the string.
    I couldn't find anything particularly wrong with your original code, though. Perhaps your if block at the bottom of your loop isn't behaving the way you think it should? Try using a debugger to verify that it enters the loop properly.
    And, by the way, the String.indexOf method might be more helpful to you. It wouldn't be as efficient to test multiple characters (I don't think), but it would make your code simpler and that's always a plus. :)
    Cheers!

  • File Renaming function

    Is the new renaming function in ML limited to TextEdit and Preview? I am unable to get the function to work in any of the microsoft office apps.

    Sorry what do you mean? Topic File Renaming? Do you mean Save As function then you rename a file to have original and updated/edited versions?
    In the New OS X there is a feature called Versions which is only supported by Apps that support that new (and IMHO terrible) feature. If the App does not support it, it is not avauilable and you have to use the old Save As.

  • BUG: Multiple file renaming

    I believe I have found a bug in the file renaming routine in LR:
    I store related .jpg and .nef (raw) files in the same folder. Each .nef has a corresponding .jpg version with the same file name.
    I wanted to rename all the files in one folder by selecting all, pressing F2 and entering the file name settings I wanted.
    When I started the process, it successfully renamed the first .jpg but stopped with an error, saying that the next file (the corresponding .nef file) could not be found.
    What happened was the following: when LR renamed the .jpg, it also renamed the corresponding .nef (which I personally think is great). But when the renaming routine moved to the next file on the list, it couldn't find it, because it was the .nef file already renamed together with the .jpg file.
    Ha, I thought, you're not outsmarting me! I then selected the .jpgs only and tried to rename them all, hoping that the .nefs would be processed as well.
    That worked fine, BUT: the .nefs were then shown in the library with the '?' sign on them, signaling that LR could not locate them anymore.
    What happened? LR successfully renamed .jpgs and .nefs, but did not update the library file for the nefs (ONLY), still showing them with their old file names, when in effect they had been renamed (as I could see in Windows Explorer).
    To summarize: you can rename a folder full of .jpgs and .nefs by just selecting the .jpgs, but LR will update the new file name in its library only for the .jpgs. For the .nefs, you need to hold LRs hand and point it to the new file name for each individual file.
    Unless I miss something basic here, I think that's something which should be fixed.
    Christian Spyr

    Hi Chris,
    fotunately I already made such a modification to ADDT´s predecessor "MX Kollection", and as the core files didn´t change, it will assumingly work the same:
    1. add the following function to the file "includes/common/KT_functions.inc.php":
    replace all chars from uploaded filenames other than alpha-numeric and "_" and "-" and "." with an underscore (_)
    function KT_websafe_filename($text) {
    return preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z0-9\-_\.]+/", "_", $text);
    2. change line 120 in file "includes/common/lib/file_upload/KT_FileUpload.class.php":
    old: $fileName = KT_replaceSpecialChars($fileName, 'filter');
    new: $fileName = KT_websafe_filename($fileName, 'filter');
    This modification will of course *always* be renaming the uploaded file accordingly -- but you´ll need no fancy trigger and anything else.
    Please backup the 2 original files !!

    I have not syncd the Palm in several days
    HELP
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

    You can recover the data from your user folder provided you have only sync'ed once with the PC when you discovered the data missing. When you sync to the PC there are files created for each PIM category in your user folder. For Example; datebook.dat or datebook (Depending on the version of Palm Desktop) and datebook.bak. Using 6.2 the file names are .mdb and mdb.bak. For 6.2, the files are located in the username folder in PalmOSdesktop in my documents.
    The files are named .dat and .bak. When you sync, the current data is stored in .dat. The next time you sync the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. You can rename the .dat to .old. then rename the .bak to .dat. If the data in the .bak file is intact, it will now be in palm desktop when you reopen Palm desktop. I have included a link to show you how to find the userfolder on the PC.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=26674
    Here is another link regarding data loss;
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=39503
    The best way to backup your data is to use the export feature in Palm Desktop. Make a new folder on the PC desktop named Palm Desktop Backup data. Next, select the category you want to export. You will get a window that asks where you want to save the file, save in the folder created on the desktop. There is a button that allows you to select currently selected record or all, select all. If you don't select all, then only the record highlighted is exported. You will then need to name the file for export, I suggest the name of the category, eg: datebook (With current date). Do this for all critical data in each category. With the data exported to the folder on the PC desktop, you can save this data to a flash drive, external hard drive or a CD-RW. With this method you will have your data in a seperate place than Palm desktop and the device. If you "Lose" data again, you can import the data back into palm desktop.
    Make sure that when you make changes in palm desktop or the device to export the data to the folder created for the backup.
    Here is a link for other options for backing up your data;

  • File Created time changes when file renamed to previously used name

    Any ideas on this one would be very gratefully received:
    I am trying to rename a file then create a new one with the original name, as part of a solution to roll over log files after x days.
    I found that the new file had the 'created time' of the original file, which messed up the logic badly. I tried to unpick this by creating the new file with a new name, then renaming it. The new file got the correct created time initially,
    but as soon as I renamed it to the original name, the created time reverted to the created time of the earlier file.
    I even tried simply deleting the old file altogether, but every attempt to get a new file with the original name resulted in the created time being that of the old file.
    I have used different filesystemobject instantiations for the old and new files, and I even tried creating the new file in a different run of the script, and in a different cmd session. The only thing that worked was logging out and in again before
    creating the new file!
    Since the created time attribute is not writeable, I'm struggling to get round this.
    Here is a stripped out version that demonstrates it. I have put 5 second waits in, so you can watch the created time get reset in front of your eyes when the new file gets renamed to the old name (might need to add a column for 'created time' to Windows
    Explorer)
    (OS is 2008 server R2 Enterprise)
    $logdir = ".\"
    $logfname = "roll.log"
    $RollAtDays = 0 # for testing - so it always creates a new file
    If ( -not ( test-path $logdir) ){ $newdir = New-Item $logdir -type directory }
    $logfile = $logdir+$logfname
    $newlog = $logdir+$logfname+".new"
    $fso = New-Object -comobject Scripting.FileSystemObject

    # if file exists, test whether it requires rolling over
    If ( test-path $logfile ){
     $fo = $fso.GetFile( $logfile )
     $dc = $fo.DateCreated
     $RollDate = $dc.AddDays( $RollAtDays )
     # write-host "$dc $RollDate"
     If( $RollDate.CompareTo( $date ) -lt 0 ){
      write-host "Roll"
      $newPath = "$logdir$date-$logfname"
      $newPath = $newPath.Replace("/", "")
      $newPath = $newPath.Replace(" ", "-")
      $newPath = $newPath.Replace(":", "")
      $fo.Move( $newPath )
      #$fo.Delete( ) #tried both renaming and deleting the original file
      start-sleep -s 5
    # some code to create a file if one doesn't exist
    If ( -not ( test-path $logfile) ){
     $header = "Date"
     $fso1 = New-Object -comobject Scripting.FileSystemObject
     $ts1 = $fso1.CreateTextFile( $newlog, $True )
     $ts1.close()
     start-sleep -s 5
     $fo1 = $fso1.GetFile( $newlog )
     $fo1.Move( $logfile )  # this is where the created date gets changed back
     #add-content $logfile $header
    # some code to add a line to the log
    [string]$logline = "$date"
    #add-content $logfile $logline

    I have to disagree with the assessment that creation time is not writable:
    Get-Item test1.txt | select creationtime

  • Incorrect hour (am/pm backwards) in file renaming

    My file naming scheme uses a date-time format: YYYYMMDD-HH-MM-SS where YYYY is the year, MM is month, DD is day, HH is hour, MM is minute, SS is second.  Worked perfectly in LR2.  In LR3, I've noticed an error in renaming my files.
    For example: time original 7/11/10 10:19:36am becomes 20100711-22-19-36 (so, it's treating the 10am as 10PM!!)
    and time original 7/11/10 10:39:39pm becomes 20100711-10-39-39 (so, treating 10pm as 10am).
    Looks like it's reading the am/pm on my files backwards. Issue is consistent between 2 nikon cameras.
    thanks for any advice. -Chris

    Known bug. http://forums.adobe.com/message/2880448?tstart=0#2880448
    It is not treating am/pm backwards, but rather treating the time as being GMT, instead of local.
    The workaround at the moment, is to rename after import.
