File Server vs. Time Capsule Device

I have an old mac mini I'm thinking of using as a network file server for time machine backups.  Other than the "wireless base station feature" of the Time Capsule device, are there any other features of the Time Capsule I'll miss out on by going file server route instead of the Time Capsule route?

I was experiencing the same problem when I upgraded to a Time Capsule. To fix the problem remove all personal file sharing port mapping settings. Then make sure that the enable  file share, and enable over WAN is on and checked for the TC, then update the TC. While that's updating go into the server app and remove any old file sharing protocols from the TC on the server app. Next add a new custom protocol by hitting the + name it file share and set the port to 140. hit the update button and wait for it to finish. Once that's finish go back to the airport utility and find the newly made file share protocol by selecting it under port mapping for the TC. If you don't have the newly made one in there make a new one your self. Name it the same as you did in the server app and set the public TCP ports to 140 and the private TCP ports to 548, make sure the private IP address is set to the same as your server in the reserve. Update the time capsule and you should be able to access both by putting in the appropriate afp://www.yourserver.com:140 for the server and afp://www.yourserver.com:548  for the TC. Have fun, lion server can be a little fussy!

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • Lion Server setup & Time Capsule

    Greetings,
I am new to lion server so please bear with me. Some of my question me seem dumb to some of you. But to me the only dumb question is one not asked. So please bear with me.
Server and time capsule will both do NAT, DHCP. Which should I use for the network Server or Time Capsule. I am connecting with a Brighthouse cable modem with a Dynamic IP. I have the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode with a static IP 192.168.0.6. The server is Static with 192.168.0.5. Brighthouse wireless is disabled as I like the time capsule wireless. Time capsule is providing WI-FI. Brighthouse router/Modem provides the Router at 192.168.0.1.
I have a domain name abc.net. Should I set up lion server first and then set up Time Capsule after it is working? Do I set this up as a .local, .private or .net account during server setup? I want to be able to get to my computer from my domain name and handle my mail.
I set this up once and it worked for about 2 hours. After that it would never see my computer. So I am setting up server again but wanted to see if I could get a little first time guidence this time. I also signed up with DYNDNS for DNS updating and that just seemed to throw a whole new batch of problems in.
So any help would be great... Not dumb with computers, but new to apple servers. And I don't do geek well!!
I think all the IP numbers, what I need to change on Netfirms to get to my computer get me confused in the setup.
    Thanks

Server and time capsule will both do NAT, DHCP
    Sure.
Which should I use for the network Server or Time Capsule
Why do you think you need to use either of them?
Ideally, you should have ONE device on your network running NAT, and ONE device running DHCP.
From your description it sounds like your Brighthouse router is running NAT therefore there is no need to run NAT anywhere else.
The chances are that the Brighthouse router is also running a DHCP server for your LAN, therefore there is also no need to run DHCP off the Time Capsule or the Server. You've already got those bases covered.
So, at least without more information, I'd be inclined to say: neither.
Should I set up lion server first and then set up Time Capsule after it is working?
Probably. It depends on what your plans are for the Time Capsule. If you're using the TC as a wireless base station then it doesn't need to be running until you're ready to connect wireless clients.
If you're using the TC for backup, you don't need it until your server and/or clients are setup and ready to backup.
Since the TC is not (as per the above) running either NAT or DHCP, there's not much else to do with it.
    So focus on the server.
Do I set this up as a .local, .private or .net account during server setup?
That's entirely up to you, although there are a couple of options. First off, though, realize that there is no, zip, nada connection between the hostname you use on your internal LAN and any public domain. It's 100% valid for your server to be called foo.bar while serving web content for abc.net and getting email for xzy.com, all at the same time.
Personally, I tend to set them the same (e.g. abc.net in this case), but others will recommend a different approach. It's largely personal preference.
I want to be able to get to my computer from my domain name and handle my mail.
If you're talking about getting to your computer/mail from an external locale, that's 100% down to DNS and completely independent of what the server thinks its own name is.

  • How to store really important files on a Time Capsule

I'm wondering whether it is wise to store really important files on a Time Capsule (apart from Time Machine) because its hard disk is non-removable and non-replaceable and there is no mirrored backup. One could lose everything in the blink of an eye.
What workarounds are there? The TC is a brilliantly simple device, but it seems to have many limitations as well.

i think you already answered your own question
and there is no mirrored backup.
well, there is the archive feature ...
    What workarounds are there?
personally, in addition to TM backups to my TC, i use a couple of external firewire drives, each partitioned in two, and bootably clone my Mac's startup disks to those on a weekly basis.
week 1 / drive X = MBP to partition A and Mini to partition B
week 2 / drive Y = MBP to partition C and Mini to partition D
week 3 and so forth = start over.
using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, you could even incrementally clone your internal drives, which saves a lot of time.
    happy computing !

  • I recently changed my internet provider and now I can't access any files on my time capsule.

I recently changed my internet provider from Bell to Rogers and now I can't access my files on my Time Capsule.
When I click on Finder, it shows up as a Shared Drive.  Unfortunately, when I select it, the folder shows up blank.  I know the "Data" folder I'd created is there since Time Capsule is able to backup to it and iTunes is still downloading my music to that folder.  How do I fix this?
The wireless network works too since all my devices are able to connect to it.
    Help, please!

NVM: Found out all I had to do was reboot my Macbook Pro.

  • Can I access my iMac backup file on my Time Capsule with Time Machine from my Powerbook G4?

I've got a 1.5 Ghz PowerPc Powerbook G4. My iMac Intel was recently stolen, however I still have the Time Capsule it continually backed up to. The Powerbook is running Leopard and has the Time Machine app. Does anyone know how I can (somehow) connect with my Powerbook to the Time Capsule left behind to transfer some documents off of it to my Powerbook even though it is not the Powerbook's designated backup server (drive)? Realize that my Powerbook already can access files from the Time Capsule but not the iMac backup. What I'm interested in is going into my iMac's backup file by using Time Machine on my Powerbook to grab some files from the iMac's history. Can this be done?If so, let me know.

If you mount the sparse bundle via finder. Then you can open it in the Time Machine display.. it might be difficult between versions..

Sorry to hear you iMac was stolen.. not the sort of thing that would be normally taken.

  • Trying to Save a File on my Time Capsule

Can someone help me on how to save a file from my iMac to my TC?

Open Macintosh HD on your iMac and look for a Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
If it is not there, right-click in the left side of the window and then click on Sidebar Preferences. Make sure that there is a check mark next to Connected Servers under SHARED.
Once you see the Time Capsule icon, click on it and a folder will display in the area to the right. Double click the folder to mount the Time Capsule disk icon on the desktop. You may need to click "Connect As" at the upper right of the window and enter your Time Capsule device password.
You can drag/drop or copy/paste to the Time Capsule icon on the desktop.

  • Failure to Setup my Time Capsule Device.  PLEASE HELP ME.

    Hey everyone,
I just bought my Time Capsule device and I installed the software that came with it. Then I powered up the device. I opened the Airport Utility. I found my device. I went through the steps as instructed. It required that the time capsule device restarts so i hit continue. It restarted and when it had finished turning back on an error came up saying that it could not locate an Apple wireless device. Have any of you guys ran into this problem? Can you help me? My ultimate goal is to connect my Time Capsule to my existing wireless network.

I too had set-up problems, but went to my DHCP/DNS server configuration with Automatic for network instead of my normal................but, I have to go to system preferences EVERYTIME and ask for assistance with message asking if I want to set up using a different set-up then go to my INP, which is my cable connection for internet and ask for user name and password. Thinking that that was the solution, I called Mediacom and they said it is APPLE I need to contact.
I am loving the freedom of my router when it connects, but do not understand why I have to go to Systems Preference to assist and it has to "recognize" a new configuration each and every time. Looking forward to solution. Thanks
PS: This is my first discussion and I could not find the icon to post a question so I hooked on to Big Mike and Glenn.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

  • Can I share the files on the time capsule for all of the macs on my network and can I access time capsule from my laptop while out of town?

I have a iMac desktop and a macbook pro.  If I purchase a time capsule, can I use it as the central location for my files for both computers?  Can I access the files on the time capsule from my macbook pro when I am out of town?

Yes, with some provisos.. it is designed as primarily a backup location for Time Machine.
Look at Pondini who has a great deal of info in his KB of all things Time Machine .. as well as Time Capsule.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Remote access is via BTMM and iCloud.. just look it up.
But the TC must be the main router in the network for it to work.

  • I get this message "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add any files to my Time Capsule

I get this message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add or delete any files to my Time Capsule.  It just started happening a week ago.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.
    A5. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

  • HT1178 Backed up files on a time capsule

    Hi,
My hard drive was reformatted whilst being repaired wiping all of my data. And then rebooted without re-installing my files from my Time Capsule. So how do I now re-instal my files from my last back up?
And when I re-install those files, will they merge with the documents / data that I've created since rebooting? Or do I have to back that data up first?
    Pinkafeld

Since posting this query, I've now been able to work out how to tranfer items back from Time machine.

I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.
