File sharing between iMac Leopard and Vista Laptop!

ok this is my thing, i have an imac (leopard) that is connected wirelesslly and a laptop (vista home premium) that is also connected wirelessly to the same network. im trying to share files between the both so i don't have to use a hard drive every time i want to transfer files from one to the other. what is the process of setting this type of file sharing between the two machines? all wirelessly of course!

Because the iMac and XP are talking, it sound like a Vista sharing thing and the only other help I can offer is to look at these Google Search's:

  • File sharing between Mac Mini and iMac "breaks" after reboot of either device, and won't restore.  Why?  Running Maverick 10.9.1 on both.  File sharing is setup on both.  Help.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple.  Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help.  Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.  File Sharing is set up on both.  If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart.  Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row.  File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem.  Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either.  No problem there.  Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
    Why?  Any ideas?

Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac.  NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored.  Real bummer.

  • File Sharing between macbook pro and imac

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with file sharing between my bankbook pro and my new iMac. I want to share some photos on my iPhoto library from my macbook pro and transfer them to my iMac. I've turned on file sharing and tried connecting, entered in my username and password, but it won't connect. I've tried several times with the correct username and password combination, and the box just shakes and denies entry. I've even tried connecting as a guest user and it says "access is denied, contact system administrator." Can anyone help? I've upgraded to Yosemite on both computers.
    Thanks in advance.

I've done everything that you've recommended, however, I am still having trouble sharing files between my macbook and iMac. I even tried using airdrop to transfer files, but nothing seems to be working. I've made sure the firewall options are what they're supposed to be and everything. Whenever I try to login as administrator to file share, it won't accept my password. I don't know why airdrop isn't working either.

  • File Sharing between Windows PC and MacBook Pro using Internet Sharing

I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell Latitude D820 running Windows XP SP2 and I want to connect both using any of these two options. I do not have a wireless router and I use Sprint 3G data card to access internet.
    1) I access the internet using a EVDO data card on my MAC and use Internet sharing to access the internet on my Dell laptop. How do I access the files on my PC from my MAC?
    2) I can have two EVDO data cards to access the MAC and PC independently. How can I setup file sharing between Windows laptop and MAC?

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.
Thank you very much for your time.
    EDIT:
What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?
    PS.
Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.

  • File sharing between mac mini and iMac

can I share files on my iMac with the Mac Mini wirelessly so I can view them on my HDTV without transferring files to an external hard drive and then connecting the hard drive to the Mac Mini? Or better yet, can I use the Mac Mini to mirror my iMac so I can work on the iMac from the comfort of my recliner in front of the big screen?

    The short answer is "yes."
You will need to enable file sharing.
When you open the finder on the mini you should see your iMac listed under "Shared" on the left hand side.  When you click on it you will initially see just the public folders.  If you open one all you will see is the drop box.  To get to your files on the iMac click on the "Connect As..." button on the upper right of the finder window.  Log on with your iMac user/password.  Now open your public folder and all your files will be available.

  • Using file sharing between iMac and Macbook Air

I have been trying to use file sharing but do not have admin password or disc..When I try to access the iMac from my Air it give the option of using my Apple ID but no password field comes up...I press enter and get the Dialog Box wobble...

I have tried using the guest login but get the message "Access denied to this server, contact administrator". I can access the Air from my iMac but even though they are both running Mavverick some of the dialog boxes appear different. And thats even though I have enabled guest login on the iMac

  • How do I set up file sharing between iMAC and MacBook Pro?

I am unable to use "file sharing".  When trying to connect as a "registered user" it asks for my server password.  What is that?  I have tried every password I think it could be.  I also can not connect as "using an Apple ID"

You can set up "iCloud" on all of them and select there to sync your Documents.  You must be running Mountain Lion on the MBA and iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPad in order to use iCloud:

  • File sharing issue with Leopard and Windows XP

I had no problem with file sharing (see the Windows machine on Leopard) before I reinstall the XP and update to SP3.
Now I cannot get the XP shared disk displayed on Leopard Finder. I looked through some guides and check these:
    Both the two laptops are in the same workgroup called "WORKGROUP";
    XP firewall disabled;
    XP Guest Account enabled.
But I just cannot get the Windows icon back to the left column of my Finder. Have I missed something? Any body with any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard, Lion

Today, I successfully installed Snow Leopard and Lion on separate partitions. Did a clean install of Lion and it is running 1000% better than when I installed it as an upgrade over Snow Leopard. Additionally, I also have Windows 7 running in Boot Camp.
My question is this: How do I access my files in Snow Leopard from Lion? Both are installed on separate paritions on the same hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I don't want to use drop boxes or anything. I simply want to navigate to my folders in SL and access them. However, it is saying I don't have permission to access them. I have tried sharing and have tried adding users with permission rights. It's possible that I just haven't done it correctly. And, I suppose it may not be possible at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Have you solved this problem yet?
just got a new MBP and am having the exact same issue!
I just posted this thread about it:

  • Screen Sharing between Snow Leopard and Leopard not working

I have Leopard on my old G5 Tower and just put Snow on my Intel Mini now Screen Sharing no longer works, file sharing works my network drives chatter back and forth with no problems I just can't get a Screen Share connection. On the G5 I put in the mini's location the "communicating" barber pole churns away for about 2mins then comes back with "Connection failed. Please make sure that Screen Sharing is enabled on the computer..... Also make sure your network connection is working properly. On the Mini Screen Sharing either crashes on launch or when it does launch does the same thing as the G5. Screen Sharing is on on both machines. I was using it just mins. before installing Snow on the Mini. I did install the remote desktop update from Apple on the Mini, it seems to be for Snow only as the update isn't mentioned on Software Update on the Leopard G5. So I'm thinking of going back to Leopard on the Mini, can I do it by just doing a "restore" from Time Machine or should I dig out the old install disk?
Am I the only one out there with this problem?
Netgear router on wired Gigabit Ethernet Network, several Firewire drives, and Network Storage drives.

The G5 is running 10.5.8 with all the updates. Screen sharing on the Mini 9 times out of 10 crashes on launch when it does load the computer list shows but none on it can be selected and connected to as before. When I put the G5's name in and try to connect I get the same cannot connect make sure sharing is on message I get on the G5 trying to connect to the Mini. I have tried making new network settings and rebooting that didn't work. File sharing works works fine all network drives show up. This and Front Row being now slow jerky and audio being out of sync (I've seen this complaint else where on this forum) are the only problems I've found. But these two are just enough to send me back to Leopard on the Mini. It is my media server. I don't use iChat but I did check to see if Screen Sharing is on after it finally opened, crashed over and over, I see that it was enabled there as well. My network is wired not airport, I only use wifi for my iPod Touch.

  • File transfer between iMac G3 and iMac with iSight

I recently ordered the new 20" iMac w/iSight to replace my geriatric iMac G3 333Mhz, and I wanted to know how to network the two so I can transfer files to the new machine. The iMac G3 is running OS 9.2.2, and is already networked to a Win98SE PC for DSL purposes (I have a router). I have zero experience with OSX (I'm way old school), so please be gentle.
While I'm at it, can anyone recommend any sites or books for an OSX newbie, that are good for an old hand Machead? I've been looking at the Apple stuff but it's not enough, and everything else I see is for M$ switchers and talks in Windoze terms which are useless to me...
    TIA

kylenne, Welcome to the discussion area!
Connect your new iMac via Ethernet to your current network.
Then you can use the information in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.

  • File Sharing between iPad 2 and Mac

    Hello -
I have an iPad 2 (recently updated to the OS 6) and a fully updated MacBook Pro.  My iTunes is also the current 10.7 version.
On my PC, I am able to locate the file sharing portion of the apps section in iTunes.  (I'm particularly interested in sharing the created projects from GarageBand for iPad to the GarageBand on my Mac.)  However, for some reason, the File sharing doesn't appear in the apps section of iTunes on my Mac.  I'm not sure what's going on, but I'd really appreciate it if someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

No, I 100% agree with Kenneth.
    File Sharing: Ticked
    Windows Sharing: On
Folders I want to share from have been added in the box, eg Movies, TV etc.
Users: Myself - Read and Write. Everyone - Read Only
Share Files and Folders using SMB: Ticked
My name under 'Account' is also ticked
Note: I am the only user on this computer, and so I am administrator.
OK.... Now we've got the 'are you stupid' questions out of the way, hopefully someone can provide me a meaningful solution. Sorry if you can read the frustration in my words, i've searched a hundred forums all with 'solutions' that might as well be asking "is the computer switched on?"
So moving on. On the LG Blu-Ray player, under movies it does display the folders I want to share from, Movies, TV, etc, under DANNY-MAC-MINI. So far so good. However, once I try to enter a folder, it asks for an ID and Password. I've tried my login credentials for my Mac 10 times - it says incorrect, try again. What is going wrong here??? Does anyone know?
    Thanks

  • File sharing between Mountain Lion and Windows XP

I have both a Windows XP computer and a Mac running Mountain Lion.  I have been able to set up sharing so that I can see the Windows folders on my Mac and the Mac folders on my Windows computer, but I cannot write directly to the folders from either direction.
    What am I missing?

Bear with me ... I've not gone through this before and am only going by instinct.
I assume that since you can see the folder on your Mac, you have File Sharing set to use Windows SMB protocol.
If you put a file on your Mac in the shared folder, can you copy out that file on the Windows system and paste it (to the Desktop) to get access? What about going the other way?
IOW, can you at least get access in both directions to bring a file out of the Shared folder and on to the local system (where it can be changed)?
My other suggestion is to enable Remote Login and set up SFTP access. Then, try writing to the Mac folder on the Windows XP side with a program that supports SFTP from Windows XP.

  • File sharing between iMac and PC running Windows 7

This can't be a new problem but I am unable to access PC files running Windows 7 on a wireless network. I can see the folders on the PC from the Mac but cannot open nor access the contents. Error message: "The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “name of folder” can’t be found. I have tried every suggestion I've found on internet. Any solutions?

I can access Mac files from PC but not the other way around. I have given "Full COntrol" under Share Permissions on PC; I have selected "Share" for Users, My Documents. I have added Guest User Accounts without passwords. I have tried to access as Owner. I have tried to "Connect to Server" through Finder, smb://computer name/file. Although the file folders are displayed on my Mac when I try to open them I get a "Connection failed. You do not have permission to access the server "computer name". When I try to access from Finder SHARED, the get error message The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “file name” can’t be found.
