File sharing between Mountain Lion and Windows XP
I have both a Windows XP computer and a Mac running Mountain Lion. I have been able to set up sharing so that I can see the Windows folders on my Mac and the Mac folders on my Windows computer, but I cannot write directly to the folders from either direction.
What am I missing?
Bear with me ... I've not gone through this before and am only going by instinct.
I assume that since you can see the folder on your Mac, you have File Sharing set to use Windows SMB protocol.
If you put a file on your Mac in the shared folder, can you copy out that file on the Windows system and paste it (to the Desktop) to get access? What about going the other way?
IOW, can you at least get access in both directions to bring a file out of the Shared folder and on to the local system (where it can be changed)?
My other suggestion is to enable Remote Login and set up SFTP access. Then, try writing to the Mac folder on the Windows XP side with a program that supports SFTP from Windows XP.

Home Sharing between Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard
Hi
I have MacBook Pro both at work and at home. The one at work has Mountain Lion with the latest version of iTune and the one at home has Snow Leopard with iTune 10.7.
I want to share movies on my iTune account between Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard. However, it doesn't seem to work....
How can I solve this problem?
FYI - I am not a big fan of Mountain Lion and do NOT want to upgrade my home computer to Mountain Lion.I am not sure why you can't access iCloud, using a browser? Then you have the same address book, so long as you are connected to the internet. https://www.icloud.com/
No email involved. From the browser, you can download individual iCards or all of the individual cards, BUT unfortunately, not the Groups. So, you have to fiddle on the SL machine with keeping the groups organized.
Up until recently, I have been able to sync Contacts from ML (which stays synced to iCloud) to SL this way: copy the /Users/~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder from the ML computer to the SL computer by dragging the icon onto the dock's AddressBook icon, this should retain all the group info. But, recently, this has ceased being complete.

Screen Sharing between Mountain Lion and Tiger not working
rMBP running 10.8.2 ML and a G3 iMac running 10.4.11 Tiger.
When I try and use Screen Sharing on the MBP to connect to the G3 it prompts for both a username and password. I enter a valid user and pw but it fails with
Authenication failed to "Ruby".
Please verify you have entered the correct name and password.
Third-party VNC clients, e.g. JollysFastVNC on my MBP and Remoter on my iPhone, can connect fine, but they only request a password.
Any ideas?I've been using Screen Share on my home network for a very long time. My most used computer, MacBook Pro (2011) was just upgraded to ML, my desktop still has Lion on it - and can't be upgraded because it is an early MacPro. I was having intermittant problems getting the MBPro to connect to the MPro screen, and resetting the PRAM was correcting it (but it could have been the rebooting process alone - I don't know). Now I can share the MPro disks on my network but not the screen. Now, to me, that's wierd. I've tried doing all kinds of setting checks, preference removal, etc. No luck. I can, however (as someone above mentioned) connect from my MPro (Lion) to my MBPro (ML) screen. I've checked my Intego VirusBarrier X6 settings, i.e. blocked addresses (in the past that has happened and blocked) and I've even entered my MBPro address into the approved address section. I've checked/rechecked the Sharing Preferences, turned them on/off, etc. All to no avail.
Is this a Mountain Lion / Lion issue, a Mountain Lion issue, or something somewhere corrupt? I used to have Remote Desktop on the MPro, but for my needs Screen Share & Disk Share suit my needs on my home network. I have LogMeInIgnition, which when the last time I tried to connect to the MBPro it showed it offline - and it isn't. I feel there's something in ML blocking things.
I'm open to suggestions, and a fix if needed. This is frustrating. Not that I can't use the exercise to walk to the room where the MPro is - not the point.

Has apple sorted out the problem with clash between mountain lion and canon mp640 printers? And if so, where are the drivers to download?

There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver. Refer to our FAQ section for connectivity issues.
In such a case as this I offer the following solution:
People who need to SCAN and/or PRINT without a compatible Lion or Montain Lion driver from their manufacturer can use Apple's very basic "PRINT & SCAN" utility in System Preferences:
Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
Click Print & Scan ( ).
Click Print .
The next window looks like this:

Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0
Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0 we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
Thanks.
Andre TenenbaumI too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
NAS server hardware:
- Mac Mini core i5
- 16 GiB ram
- Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic. Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4. Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users. All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well). The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected. The problem is 100% keeping them connected. When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already. Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS. -
I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple. Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help. Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1. File Sharing is set up on both. If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart. Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row. File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem. Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either. No problem there. Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
Why? Any ideas?Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac. NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored. Real bummer. -
Can I use Unix symbolic links between Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard Mail folders?
After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I partitioned my iMac HD to have two partitions: Macintosh HD has Mountain Lion; I reinstalled Snow Leopard on Macintosh HD 2. Best part: you can access your user-created files from EITHER disk partition. But not so OS X Mail. I wanted to revert to Snow Leopard, since I don't like the iOS-like Mountain Lion (swipe THIS!), but Mail is a problem since all my Snow Leopard Mail was successfully migrated over to Mountain Lion during upgrade.
Is there a way to use Unix symbolic links between actual OS X Mail folders in Mountain Lion and OS X Mail in Snow Leopard?
It seems the (trial) symbolic link created pointed to a blank file. It's not a matter of "letting" each maintain its own database, William. By default, I believe, I have no control over what gets written. In fact, if there were a way to set a preference that says, use this index named "spotlightindexSL' only [while in SL], that might solve my problem. Then when booting up in ML, it would just go after the index it last made.
My guess is that while I am in ML or SL and not the other, there are all sorts of changes to files and the system freaks and says "Oh, now look at what a mess I've made — there are all sorts of files unaccounted for. Now I have to rebuild the whole thing."
I have 2 had drives in my Mac, both 500GB. One (Working Disk) has no operating system and all my files, and the other drive is partitioned 470/30gb with SL on the 470 and ML in the 30. When I restart in either OS, the auto-start Indexing as if for the very first time, and do both hard drives (in total: 3 partitions of files, not counting the ML Restore partition).
I know it all uncoventionally — just wanted to see what my $20 new OS will cost me in software upgrades, in particular my $1800 Adobe Design Suite CS4 and a few others. -

Are there any known conflicts between Mountain Lion (10.8.3) and Microsoft Outlook for Mac? After installing, I can't send or receive eMails. Using a Macbook Pro.
Is this a recent problem or has it been going on for some time. If you just updated to ML, you might want to confirm that you've update to the latest MS Office / Outlook patches.

File Sharing between macbook pro and imac
Hello,
I'm having trouble with file sharing between my bankbook pro and my new iMac. I want to share some photos on my iPhoto library from my macbook pro and transfer them to my iMac. I've turned on file sharing and tried connecting, entered in my username and password, but it won't connect. I've tried several times with the correct username and password combination, and the box just shakes and denies entry. I've even tried connecting as a guest user and it says "access is denied, contact system administrator." Can anyone help? I've upgraded to Yosemite on both computers.
Thanks in advance.I've done everything that you've recommended, however, I am still having trouble sharing files between my macbook and iMac. I even tried using airdrop to transfer files, but nothing seems to be working. I've made sure the firewall options are what they're supposed to be and everything. Whenever I try to login as administrator to file share, it won't accept my password. I don't know why airdrop isn't working either.

File sharing between iMac Leopard and Vista Laptop!
ok this is my thing, i have an imac (leopard) that is connected wirelesslly and a laptop (vista home premium) that is also connected wirelessly to the same network. im trying to share files between the both so i don't have to use a hard drive every time i want to transfer files from one to the other. what is the process of setting this type of file sharing between the two machines? all wirelessly of course!
Because the iMac and XP are talking, it sound like a Vista sharing thing and the only other help I can offer is to look at these Google Search's:

I have a dual boot lab that I set up for a school. The partitions consist of Mountain Lion OSX and Windows 7 Ent. I use bootpicker software for choosing the operating system at startup. When I select the windows partition, it take just under 2 minutes from selection to the windows login screen. It seems to take incredibly long for the mac to "shut down and hand over the operating system to windows.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get this timing faster?
Thanks for any ideas/inputThe only suggestion I can make is to look ar ReFind (previuosly ReFit). Startup mamangement is one of its features.
But
It is very powerful so test it for yourself before deploying it. Some of the functions are best kept out of the hands of the curious, or 'playful'
And you never answered this question.
Tell me what the needs are, do the users always need to choose Windows or is this a variable? -
How to I run Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and Windows 8 on my new iMac
I just bought a new iMac. My goal is to set up 3 different partions to run 3 different operating systems (Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard, and Windows 8). The reason for this post is because when I attempted to do this same thing on my old iMac ( except I was running Lion instead of Mountain Lion) I was able to create a partion that would run Snow Leopard (so I could run Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 on a more stable platform), however I totally "hosed" my old Bootcamp partition running Windows XP. The iMac won't even bootup in Bootcamp anymore. It is just a black screen and it says something about it not being a bootable drive and to insert a bootable disc.
So I need to know the best way to do this, and I want to avoid having the same problems with my new iMac that I had on my old one, especially since I have a freelance job starting next week and my client is sending me licences for software that I will need to run on Windows 8.
Thank you in advanceUse the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 8 and a product such as VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, or Parallels Desktop to run Snow Leopard Server in emulation. That iMac model isn't capable of being booted into Snow Leopard.

File sharing issue with Leopard and Windows XP
I had no problem with file sharing (see the Windows machine on Leopard) before I reinstall the XP and update to SP3.
Now I cannot get the XP shared disk displayed on Leopard Finder. I looked through some guides and check these:
Both the two laptops are in the same workgroup called "WORKGROUP";
XP firewall disabled;
XP Guest Account enabled.
But I just cannot get the Windows icon back to the left column of my Finder. Have I missed something? Any body with any ideas? Thanks in advance.Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.
