File Sharing "Connection Failed"

Hi
I have a newly purchased MacMini and a year old MacBook Pro, both running 10.6.6.
When I turn on File Sharing (with the afp option set) on the MacMini
it appears in the Finder sidebar on the MacBook.
When I try to connect to the MacMini from the MackBook it says "Connection Failed"
and the MacMini disappears from the Finder sidebar.
After that, when I look at System Preferences on the MacMini, File Sharing is off.
Any ideas?
MANY THANKS!
Mike

I seem to have found a solution to my problem.
After more experimentation I found that not only was File Sharing not working neither was Printer Sharing. However printer sharing worked if both computers were connected to my Netgear router by ethernet but not when the laptop was connected wirelessly.
This indicated a wireless problem and as both could access the internet however connected to the router it looked as though the router was not passing an incoming wireless message from the laptop out to the iMac via ethernet.
Consequently I switched everything off, unplugged it all from the mains power supply and left it for 25 minutes. On reconnecting and rebooting everything the printer sharing now works properly again with the MacBook Pro connected wirelessly and the iMac via ethernet to the router an, for printing, the iMac via USB to the printer.
Long may it last!
I hope this info might help others with a similar problem

  • Personal File Sharing Connection Timing Out

I'm having trouble personal file sharing connecting to one computer in my office. All the others work just fine and I can retrieve files and all. Oddly the computer that I can't read can connect to me.
When I try and connect, I go to the Network, I can see her computer, I double click it and get the following message:
    Contacting xx.xx.xx.xx
    Timeout in 120 seconds
And then it counts down the seconds and eventually nothing happens. I went into her System settings and checked and everything (that I know to check) is on and the IP address is the same one that is showing in my dialog box.
    Any ideas?

Several restarts later and it is still doing it. I can connect to others, but this one machine doesn't want to go. Anybody?

  • File Open - Connection Failed

    Hi,
I recently bought 1TB TC. I was able to setup the network and everything works fine.
I manually created folders and copied files on to TC (I didn't want to use backup).
Whenever I open a file from TC, It gives me an error "Connection Failed...".
After I press Ok, it opens the file properly.
The message keeps showing for every file I open. Its very annoying.
    Kindly help me.
    Thanks and regards

    Exactly same problem here!!

  • Screen Sharing Connection failed when using dock shortcut

I have 10.10.2 installed on this computer - just updated - and 10.10.1 installed on a couple others (in the process of upgrading) as well as older versions installed on some older computers.
I have Screen Sharing in the Dock and when I right click on it I get a list of recently connected computers. Until recently this generally worked for making the connection to that remote computer. Sometimes there were minor issues such as systems showing up which are no longer on my network - or showing up with an obsolete name. The big issue is that lately systems are showing up with a .vncloc extension and even when they don't it is hit or miss as to wether or not using the shortcut will make the connection.
I get an error message that says: Connection failed to "ComputerName".
Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly.
In every case - after I see that message if I open a Finder folder - and navigate to the other system and click on Screen Sharing in the Finder window it will connect - and I can do this repeatedly. Every so often the shortcut will work but mostly it does not.
I have looked for ways to clear that recent items list without success.
I have cleared the keychain access to the remote computers and reset without success.
I don't recall seeing this behavior prior to the first 10.10.x system being on my network.
I have not (yet) tried - turning off screen sharing on ALL systems throughout the network then turing them all back on.
Not sure if this is a I am using a single iTunes/iCloud account for many of the systems - but also have one permanent and several guest machines that have their own iCloud account.

    Hi Matt Wolanski,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you are having intermittant trouble with screen sharing. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read this article, there are several things you can check that may be able to help the issue.

  • File sharing service fails to start without a user login.

Using a Mac mini as a basic file & print server which is accessed by a variety of other platforms; primarily Windows XP.
Recently, however, the file sharing has stopped running automatically despite the settings all being 'present & correct'.
    Platform is run as follows:
    - 10.5.8 Leopard (the client and NOT the server version)
    - 'headless' i.e. no keyboard, mouse or monitor
    - has two active admin accounts (one is root) and a single user account.
    - Login is via the welcome screen i.e. no default user/automatic login takes place.
Interestingly, when a default login account is enabled, the file sharing service works fine. However, this is a work around and not a fix so I am really looking to get the file sharing working without having to 'fudge' it this way; please bear in mind when replying.
To add to the frustration, although the file sharing has worked in the past without a hitch in this configuration, I cannot think of any changes made that would hinder this function. Additionally, the print service also runs without a problem without the need to login otherwise.
    All help gratefully appreciated.

Since the problem is before a user logs in, I suspect one of these files...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/eppc.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ARDAgent.plist
    /private/etc/bootpd.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server.plist

  • Simple File Sharing Connect XP to Tiger

How do we share a folder inside of Tiger? Didn't there used to be a per folder sharing setting in system preferences>sharing>personalfilesharing
I used to connect through XP via a mapped network drive, but my connection keeps dropping. Not so good when I'm working on a file in xp that resides on my mac. This wasn't the ideal solution anyways.
Not sure how to attack this, my energy saver is set to never sleep the computer, display or hard disk.

I changed the workgroup name to match the pc, which for some reason was blank in the directory access utility. I hope that makes the connection persist.

Vaio able to connect to MAC & PC.
PC able to connect to MAC & Vaio
MAC able to connect VAIO & not able to connect PC.
I have checked the settings on all three to make sure they are the same. However it still dosent work. I have switched on the Guest account on PC as well.
    I am missing somthing somewhere.

There is something wrong with MAC accessing the PC.
    Thanks & Regards
So if the Mac is in a Domain then as have the site bookmarked MacWindows.com. Then make sure they are using the same Time Server as the domain is using. Plus if the Vaio is NOT Abler to reach the other PC then look at that PC to make sure it is sharing correctly. If the Mac & the Vaio can see each other but neither can see the PC then something is wrong with the PC sharing setup.
Plus what kind of Domain server is running, 2003 or 2008?

  • Mac Mini loses file sharing connection with Win boxes

I replaced my 2008 vintage Mac Mini with a late 2012 vintage Mac Mini for use as a file server. The files are on an external USB drive that was in use on the earlier box. When I try to stream a movie, or copy files to any of five Win7 or WinXP boxes, the connection is lost after a few minutes. Also, I can rarely open or save directly to the MAC using any application on the Win box. I have to copy the file to the local machine, then copy the modified file back to the Mac. This all worked fine with the Snow Leopard box, but seems to have quit working with Mountain Lion. All of this works on the Mountain Lion box when I use my Mac Air to connect. The Mac external drive is mounted under my Mac account, and the Win boxes have the Mac as a mounted drive using that same account.
Any ideas how to fix this?

A NAS should work. A proper file server will cache active files in memory. So it's not obvious use of SSD storage will speed your service. In any case figure out how to back it up and most important how you will recover after a disaster requiring full recovery.

  • Lion:  file sharing

I have two users on my iMac which is running Lion.  I am trying to share files between users.  I have followed the instructions in help and am getting nowhere (after about an hour and a half).  Can anyone help?

Found an article on Ryan Armstrongs blog that solved this: http://ryanarmstrong.net.au/blog/mac-osx-lion-file-sharing-connection-failed.htm l
quite simply you delete your home directory in File Sharign privileges on the target mac. Then "connect as" from your destination and it will work.

  • Windows user can no longer connect to my File Sharing IP address

    Hello,
Since updating to OS X 10.4.9, Windows users can no longer connect to my file sharing IP address.
I have had no problems when I was using 10.4.8, and I have re-checked both the Windows computer and my Mac to make sure that the file sharing connection should be possible.
I think this may be some sort of firewall / security issue (?) in that the 10.4.9 update has downloaded something which now "hides" my Mac at this IP address. I am unsure how to resolve this problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Much obliged, in advance.

Can the Mac connect to the PC?
Have you checked the Workgroup is the same on the Mac
    in Directory Access>CIS/SMB?
Have you tried turning off the Firewall for a test?
    Has the IP changed?
    Hello!
Thank you for the suggestive questions above. I haven't "tested" any of them because I simply became exasperated with the "change" in 10.4.9 and went back to system 10.4.8
Of course, now everything is right with the world and I can once again have my Windows computer connect to my Mac.
Thank you for taking the time in trying to help me -- much obliged.

  • Personal File Sharing fails on network of (2) cascading Linksys routers.

    Topography:
Comcast cable modem attached to (WAN-port) Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys WRT54G (WAN-port) attached to Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys BEFSR41 starting @ is 192.168.1.1.
    Linksys WRT54G starting @ is 192.168.2.1.
All systems attached to either the ethernet ports of the BEFSR41,
the ethernet ports of the WRT54G, or Wi-Fi of the WRT54G connect
    to the Internet flawlessly.
    Problem:
Using Personal File Sharing (Connect to Server…) all Apple systems
(all MacOS X v10.4.7) only see other systems attached to the router
that they are attached to & vice versa, i.e. systems attached to BEFSR41
can not see systems attached to WRT54G & vice versa.
    Any ideas?

I think you could get around this by changing the subnet mask to 255.255.254.0, (maybe 255.255.0.0), but not sure if it would open Security problems for you.
With the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0, you can only see other computers in the range where only the last number is different... if it was set to 0.0.0.0.0, then theoretically you could connect to any Computer in the world, havent tried it though!:-)
Other ways exist of one router handing out all the IPs, but that's for later.

  • File Sharing on a Network and it only works one way

I recently configured a new wireless network, and want to fileshare between my Mac and old PC. I have followed several tutorials, and I can read/write to the Mac from the PC. However, when I try to connect to the PC from the Mac, it asks for username and password. I type in the only user name and password setup on the PC, and it says I do not have access to that server. Any ideas?

There is a "Server" service, and it is running on the laptop. The file I needed to move was ~150GB - wifi would be faster than OneDrive. You can appreciate my desire for full gigabit speed :)
I can connect to the laptop from the desktop over wifi. So the functionality of sharing is all there for me. But I am completely unable to set the wired network's location to "Private", which essentially enables Windows Firewall rules under the hood that
    block any file sharing connections.
I can manually edit the firewall rules, but these apply only to network location profiles, i.e. "Domain", "Public", "Private", or "All".
I'll post a few screenshots to try and make this more clear.
Here is my wifi connection. Highlighted in red you can see the option to enable file sharing. Prett slick.
Here is a screenshot of my wired connection. As you can see, the option to enable sharing is completely missing.
The only explanation I can come up with for this is that it is an "Unidentified network", however on the other end of the cable is a desktop with the same connection settings running the same OS with the same updates and on that machine the network is set
to "Private" and has file sharing enabled. The option to enable or disable file sharing does not appear on the desktop either. The only difference between the two is that the network was enabled on the desktop prior to updating to Windows 8.1 (from Windows
8), the laptop had Windows 8.1 clean installed.

  • File Sharing Keeps Crashing on Snow Leopard Server

I use a Snow Leopard mini server running OS 10.6.4. The server works as a file sharing hub for my network. Lately, something strange has been happening. On several occasions, the network file sharing function has suddenly gone dead with no warning -- in other words, open file sharing connections are suddenly cut off, and when I try to re-access the server to reinitiate file sharing, it lists no drives available for browsing.
When I restart the server, the problem seems to resolve itself (temporarily), and the server gives no indications of anything having gone wrong. The other weird part is that this problem is exclusive to Mac systems trying to access the Mac server. In other words, PC computers on my network are still able to connect and share files without any trouble, even after the apparent stall has occurred.
Any ideas? It is getting annoying to have to restart the server every few days. Thanks!

I have a Mac Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and experience a similar problem - Windows clients, XP Vista and 7 alike can not access the server, This was all fine before going to Snow Leopard.
To fix it , I switch SMB sharing off and back on again, then it works fine. This happens several times per day, I am so far unable to detect pattern or even any log entry that might shed light on it. This is a big problem for me, as I have approx 40 windows clients accessing that server and it's shares.
There are so many post all over the internet about SMB and Snow Leopard having problems, Is Apple aware of this , has anyone heard back from them about fixing this ?
Apparently there's a major problem in Snow Leopard using a version of Samba that is not compatible with Windows 7. I think there are workarounds - a search on Google should help.
However, the original poster was complaining of a problem with AFP, which is what I'm having a problem with as well. If anybody has the solution ...

  • Can not login to file sharing from iMac

I have been trying to connect through the bluetooth feature to File Sharing from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  I use the same password for login to my computers and for my File Sharing connections. For some unexplained reason; whatever password I enter when trying to connect from my iMac to the MacBook, it is rejected. I attempted to Change the Password. I entered what I have always used as my password and a new password. That was rejected. I assume because the "old password" was not recognized.
How do I go about establishing the correct password on my iMac to connect to my MacBook. I can log off my MacBook, and restart with that password; so I really don't understand what's going on.
    Please advise.

I read many threads about similar errors while connecting to BI Publisher I tried this:
    - Patch KB908002 (.Net for develosper) and didn't work
    - Patch KB907417 (office 2003 for client). Didn't work too.
I changed to a vitual machine with Windows XP and Office 2007. Everything is working just fine.
I think the problem with Publisher Desktop 10.1.3.2.1 (connection with BI Publisher) has to do with Windows Vista or Office 2003 (both installed on my pc). I'll install Office 2007 on Vista and see what happens.
    I'll post results.

  • Sharing files connection failed

I have two MAC's. One is a 20, 2.1 GZ,iMAC,PPC Chips. One is my MACBOOK 2.16gz core 2 duo. I also have them all on an airport express. All internet connection for all three are fast an working great. Here is the issue.
    1. I tried to set up the MACBOOK as the main file point for photos and music.
    2. I turned on all computers and then enable through systems references I turned on the file sharing on the MACBOOK.
    3. Immediately there is a connection on the PPC and is says connection.
    4. It never connects, says connection failed. When I click on connect again it fails again.
    5. I shut down the MACBOOK and then reboot.
    6. I then get a connection again on the PPC, but this it say connection failed. I click on connection again and it allows me the enter as a registered user which I do and it is perfect.
    7. This same thing happens when I try the reverse. (setting up the iMAC as the main file point)
    8. When the Macbook sleeps though the files are unavailable to the PPC and vice versa.
    9. the only way to make it works is to turn off both computers, then start one and turn on file sharing, then turn it off, reboot and start the other computer no matter which one I am trying to use as the main file sharing unit.
I need to know if here is a way to having to stop rebooting either computer to make all this work. I thought just turning file sharing on or off was all I needed to do to make all this work. Also, the sleeping issue make the file inaccessible.
I have repaired permissions key chain first aid to no avail.
    Any help world be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Can you try logging in as the Ownername/Ownerpassword of the other Mac(s)?
Might have to delete that account in Keychain Access and redo it.
Sharepoints might help make it easier...
