File Sharing - Drives not shown

I have six Macs on a network with DSL Modem and a separate router. (this is irrelevant)
One of the Macs (G3) is a server. (still irrelevant)
I have always used "personal File sharing" on the G3 to allow my other Macs to access it. I turn on AFP on the G3 and GO>Connect to Server from my G4 MDD.
Up pops the user name and password (everything ok to here)
In that list usually shows something like this:
Macintosh HD G3
Macintosh HD2 G3
johnsmith
davesmith
janesmith
Notice it will share the Hard drives on the G3 AND the User Folders.
Now I just recently get only this:
johnsmith
davesmith
janesmith
No hard drives!
Does anyone know what could be wrong? I can share from other Macs on the network as outlined above and their drives show in the list. Also remember, this G3 server has always allowed me to connect to the drives. Now they are just not there. I have trashed the preference file com.apple.systempreferences.plist etc. No luck. I have rebuilt permissions. No Luck. I have got info on the disks to see if they have their permissions correct. No luck.
Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks.

Hello JamsDizz,
With OS X Server 10.6, File Sharing settings will be relocated to Server Preferences.

  • File Systems are not shown in CCMS Monitoring

    Hi Gurus,
We have installed all SAP components in Solaris 10 zones including Solution Manager.
Solaris File Systems are not shown in CCMS Monitoring under FileSystem. It looks like SAPOSCOL is not sending the OS data to CCMS. It does not show file systems in OS06 also.
The probles exists on Systems runnig in Solaris 10 zones only and NOT on systems running on individual Servers. [without Solaris zones]
    Thanks,

file sharing is not working from pc to imac os x 10.9.2

    Hello there Karen,
It sounds like you are having to power cycle your modem to get internet back every single day. We can start by troubleshooting your Airport Express to help isolate the issue. I would first perform a Soft Reset, then test the issue again. If needed as a last resort I would then perform a Hard Reset:
    Soft reset
Connect the device to power and wait for it to complete its start up process. To learn more about the start up process, please see All about Wi-Fi base station Status Lights (LED).
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip for 1 full second, then release it. The light (LED) will begin flashing amber, indicating that the device is in soft reset mode.
From the AirPort menu bar item, choose the network created by the device (the network name does not change).
Open AirPort Utility from Applications > Utilities.
Select the base station, then click Edit (The Edit window will indicate that the base station is in Soft Reset mode).
Move through the tabs to make changes to your passwords or other settings as needed, and click Update and Continue as required
    Quit AirPort Utility.
    Hard reset
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button and the device will reset.
Wait about a minute for the base station to finish restarting, then open AirPort Utility from Applications > Utilities.
Select the base station from Other Wi-Fi Devices, then click Edit.
    Select the Other Options button.
Select "Restore previous settings" and click Next until you get to the final window.
AirPort Utility will indicate that Setup is complete. Click Done.
    Quit AirPort Utility.

  • File Sharing permissions not saving on second drive

    Hello,
in my Mac Pro running 10.5.6 I have a second drive that I recently installed, This drive has two folders in it that i wish to share. So I did the following steps:
System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing (SMB Sharing is being used as well as AFP)
I then clicked the Shared Folders + and added folder1
The following users were automatically added
    MyAccount Read and Write
    MyAccount Read and Write
    Everyone Read and Write
Whenever i edit these permissions or attempt to add another user everything seems to of gone fine, but when i close System Preferences and reload it i get the following
    folder1 is still shared
and the permissions are still the same as above.
I've looked at editting the smb.conf file in /etc/smb.conf but i don't want to do that unless necessary. Also it doesn't appear that any of the other settings are saved here any information would be appreciated.
    Thanks

This was due to the disk being a DOS-format

  • Can no longer move or copy files between drives (not a newbie issue!)

Copying and moving files between internal and external devices, and external to external devices is no longer working.
*For the first time in my life, I get a "Circle with a Bar through it" when attempting to move or copy files.*
This doesn't happen between the two internal drives at all (though I'm worried it might start). It happens between two HFS+J devices as well as HFS+J and FAT32 devices. I can delete files, create folders, and in some instances where things are acting funny, copy to, but not from the device. A noticed side effect that is now happening is that I can no longer move drive icons (CDs, DVDs, HDs) to their upper-right hand corner position on the desktop, if they didn't start there. They don't drop there, just staying where they originally sat (under a list of desktop shortcuts and files). It does not matter if the drives are USB or Firewire, and this never happened previous to about a month ago.
I have done all the basic stuff -- verify/repair drives, reboot multiple times, mount & dismount, change connection ports, backed up-reformatted-and restored the smallest drive, fixed preferences (not at all relevant), Disk Warrior repair the devices, set all permissions to R/W, check all device related infos, researched on-line for a week... Nothing. I have even taken the devices to PCs, where they work perfectly, and as expected.
This issue is apparently either a corruption, or a bug induced by Software Update, in the part of the system that handles files and file structures, or possibly the _USB and Firewire_ interfaces.
I just need to know where all those relevant parts are in the system folders, so I can attempt to restore them from a backup previous to the last "Software Update," (to be sure. And to bring this one step closer to being solved).
A system restore really is not an option, as that would require nearly two weeks of re-tweaking everything from the system to every piece of software included (updating the system about 10 times via software update, reinstalling 90% of the actual software packages... and then updating those multiple times, looking-up all the serials that get killed, etc.)
I have to correct this fast, as we need to move the files from the work drives to the archive drives before we run out of room. So any help would be very appreciated... even if you only know where a few of the system components are located (it just might be one of those, causing the issue).
    ---TIA

    {The last link in this post is most relevant, except for your recent finding.}
The reference was to the User permissions, per each; as when these
become corrupted, the simple 'repair disk permissions' and other
basic duties do not find an error with them. That is because there is
nothing really wrong with them from that standpoint.
Another odd error can happen if one is resizing partitions in an Intel
based Mac, and also if one has or had a BootCamp partition and
wanted to reclaim space. But not always. Thankfully, the only time
I tried Windows on a Mac, the media install disc was corrupted so
it just didn't happen. That was Virtual PC and Windows on PPC.
Tiger brought with it the ability to non-destructively resize partitions.
However, it was not thought to be successful in non-Intel based Macs.
The discussion on that matter came up a few years ago, so someone
has undoubtably tried that in a PPC and reported findings online.
When file sharing between user-account created content runs amok,
then the system(s) will not allow the content to be moved or shared.
So, if any shared user-account created content (including drives
initialized or handled without permissions ignored, clones wrong,
etc) are not the problem, then how does one explain these wrong
ful action circles-with-lines, or action disallowed warning symbols?
There must be a simpler answer. Do you have cats which have
access to your computers in the off-hours? They do keyboard.
Some have been thought to have technical skills outside of the
usual coy and cute play-acting people think they are limited to.
I'm sticking to the cats theory for now; the time is 3:21AM here
and I only am up to get a drink and look outside at +5°F. calm.

  • Personal file sharing is not working from Snow Leopard (10.6)

I am having hard time making the personal file sharing on my MacBook running 10.4.11 accessible from my work computer MacBook Pro running 10.6.2.
They are connected to the same router.
On 10.4.11 MacBook side, I turned off Firewall and started Personal File Sharing.
On 10.6.2 MacBook Pro, I saw the MacBook below "SHARED" in the side bar of Finder window. I double clicked on the icon. It showed all users of the MacBook. I double clicked on one user, then an error dialog showed and the connection had been disconnected. Since then, only "Not Connected" is shown in the Finder window. There is no Reconnect button. I had to reboot 10.4.11.
Should 10.6.2 be able to open the public folders on 10.4.11?
What is the best way to trouble shoot this?

I had much the same problem except that it was a PB running 10.4.11 to a G4 running same.
    Check this article - http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070226213016446
The PB could connect to an iMac with no problem and the G4 could connect to the PB and iMac and vice versa.
Turns out that com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist had been deleted from the G4 Root Library at some point. Copied it from the user preference file and everything now works again.

  • Mac OS 9 AFP file sharing volume not visible under Mac OS 10.5

An old blue-white PowerMac G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2 with file sharing on is not visible on the network for a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.5. – However, a PowerBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.11 perfectly shows the G3.
Connecting to the G3 works on the new MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5 if I use the server's IP-address (afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) but does not work if I use the server's name (afp://<servername>).
All other shares on the network are visible for both the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5 and the PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.
Why does the MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5 not show the G3?
Why can't I connect to the G3 using its AFP name?

I think this is because there is no AppleTalk on Leopard.
    Ah, I stand corrected........
    Go to SystemPreferences > Network
Select your connection in the left column. Advanced > AppleTalk
    Enable AppleTalk for your connection.

  • File Sharing tab not working?

    Hi,
I am having a problem with iTunes and my iPad today: I have a couple of apps that allow sharing of content, such as iMockups, Pages, VLC, etc.
I wanted to add a video to VLC by using the file sharing tab and adding the video either by the "add..." button or just dragging it into the screen (like I did before), but nothing happened. In fact, nothing at all is showing on the right hand side for ANY app!
So I disconnected the iPad and looked at the apps, and all three apps I tested (Pages, VLC and iMockups) have their respective files still there, so they were not lost or anything.
So I went and reconnected the iPad, and for the time the iPad synchs with iTunes I can see all files! But once the synch completes I cannot?!
Has anyone come across this before? Is there a fix for that?
    Thanks for your time
    Alex

The issue has been resolved, turned out to be a bad backup of the iPad. Restoring it to a different backup fixed it.

  • 750 GB Seagate Drives not shown on Xserve

    Hi there,
i installed new Seagate ST3750640A Version 3.AAE Drives on a Xserve RAID to increase Capacity. It's an Xserve RAID from 2003.
I created a Array with 2 Discs as a RAID 0 to test the whole thing.
The Drives are shown in RAID-Admin and ich have the latest firmware installed which comess with the 1.5.1 Raid Admin.
    I'M using a Fibre-Channel Card.
Serve is a Xserve G4 running 10.4.9 Server.
o here is my Problem after i created the Array i can't do anything with the Array on the Server. It's not shown in Disc-Utility. I rebooted the Server changed the Fibre-Channel Cable. Tried it on a other Server. Nothing.
In System-Profiler i can see that under Fibre-Channel that there is the Xsere RAID attached. But i can't see the Array to format it in HFS or else.
I tried it on both sides of the RAID.

Ebay is an excellent place to find empty ADMs
We recently bought three, added them to a 4x250 array, took out the 250's (and have them as spares for our other 5 raids with 250's), and put in 7 750 seagates. Worked beautifully. Our 250's are starting to drop like flies now that it's been 3+ yrs.
Expect to pay 150-200 each for empties.

  • File sharing can not open files when transferred.

File sharing. When files are sent over to folder on mac can not open message comes up " you do not have permission to open the document"
Had no problem before loading 10.9.

Files are coming from another computer on the network and they put the files into a folder on the deck top. When I try to open them I found that I had to select the folder and "get info" and go down to the gear and select "apply to enclosed items" It seems once I take the files out of the folder it reverts back to the default. Then I have to  reset it each time to open new files. In Sharing & permissions I have all the privileges set for read & write is there another way to set it as a default to be able to open the files with going to the gear each time?.

  • File sharing does not work

I have a network of 4 Macs.  Up until recently I was able to use file sharing and screen sharing between all of them in any direction.  Recently one of the Macs has become inaccessible for both  file sharing and screen sharing from one of the other Macs however file sharing still works from the others while screen sharing does not.  I am pretty sure that none of the comfiguration has changed.  Any ideas what has goen wrong and how to fix it?

This post https://discussions.apple.com/message/10400761#10400761 resolved my issue.  Just in case it may help someone else.

  • External USB Drive Not Shown in Finder... HELP!!!

After upgraded to the latest OS X Lion, external USB drives plugged to my macbook pro (named A) won't show anything. I've tried cmd+opt+r+p twice but no luck; however, i am able to see it in Disk Ultilities and Storage in About This Mac...
Another same macbook pro of mine (named B) did the upgrade and it is working just fine - external drive is shown as normal whenever plugged.
Help please because my daily work depends largely on document on external usb drive!!!???

I've surfed around already before having my problem posted here because it's so frustrated…
AnaMusic: I've tried that but it isn't worked
    Eric Ross: it's checked
LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
    Are there any ways around???

  • File shareing is not working WHY

I have an Imac running 10.7 and a g5 running 10.5.8 the G5 we are usung as an in house server. It working fine for 5 months then our internet went down and now it no longer works. This is how I have it set up. on the g5 I have file shareing turned on and the folder I would like to share set to share. Then I made logins for for the computer I want to share the folder with. The on the Imac I would go to connect to server and the g5 would show up then it would ask me to login so I did. everthing worked fine but now when I try to login it just gives me the spinning wheel but never logs in why is it doing this? I have restarted both computers
and I have deleated my login and re added it. But still the same thing

    any ideas?

  • File sharing is not working between iMac and MacBook

I had been sharing files between my iMac and MacBook.  My settings haven't changed and all of the sudden my shared files aren' t showing up in the sidebar.  Firewall settings show to allow file sharing.
