File sharing imac/ibook on belkin router

Hello, I have a imac, with 10.3.9 software, also a ibook with 10.4.5 software.
The imac is connected through the internal network card to a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router. The ibook is connected to the router with the internal airport extreme wireless network card. Both units can access the internet on the cable modem connected to the router. When I try to access the other the computer for file sharing it requires a password that I do not know. I have set both units up for file sharing on the Systems Perference
page. The login asked for a username and password, but gives me a error
when I try to get access. I want to transfer file between the two computers.
Any help???
Steve

If I do try the password used for setting the preferences or
loading software updates...
That is the password that you need. Remember if you are sitting at the iMac trying to access the iBook you will need to enter the password that you use on the iBook not the one that you use on the iMac.

  • File Sharing imac intel core duo and ibookG4 osx

    Hi Everyone!
I am trying to share files and a printer on my imac and my ibook. Both are using osx. I enabled Personal File Sharing and Printer Sharing on both. I've been looking at various resources and they say to use Go > network but nothing happens. I put files in the public folder on both macs but I still am not able to connect. I am connected wirelessly via airport by both. Both access the web but not each other. On my modem I have a password for connecting but both macs have it in their keychain, i don't know if that makes a difference.
Please explain it simplisticly, I'm really rusty. I used to be a pc user, but have totally switched over.
Thank you so much in advance!!!!! I appreciate any and all help!

Great, I'm able to see my files. Thank you so much!!!
Now, if you don't mind, I a couple more questions. How do I share my printer, it's on my imac, but I've also installed it on my ibook since I wasn't sure how to share I had to print from the ibook. So the printer is installed on both. I don't know if that helps.
Also, last question, I was wondering how apple remote desktop works. Would I be able to log into my mac from anywhere? And if so, how do I do that. I commute to work and if I forget a file, I would like to be able to access it via the internet or something.
I really appreciate the help so far!!!!! I just need a little more help to be able to do everything I need to.

  • How to get iBooks into file sharing?

How do you use file sharing with iBooks app on iPad2? I cannot get the iBook app into the column under file sharing. Can not drag it there and then unable to utilize file sharing (want to transfer a pdf into iBooks).

There is no file sharing for ibooks.
You sync the same way you do video or music.
If you are manually syncing, just drag and drop it on the iPad icon in iTunes.
    Otherwise do this-
    Straight from Apple:
    Syncing and saving PDFs
To add PDFs to your iTunes library on your computer, simply drag and drop the PDF into your iTunes Book library.
To sync a PDF to iBooks on your device:
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the Devices list on the left in iTunes 10.1 or later.
Click the Books tab in the resulting window.
Ensure that the Sync Books checkbox is enabled.
If iTunes is set to only sync selected books, be sure to enable the checkbox next to the PDF you want to sync.
    Click Sync.

  • File sharing with a G4Dual and a IMac

Just upgraded to an iMac from a Power PC G4 Dual, file sharing is no problem as far as the ethernet is concerned, but the only snag is there is only one ethernet port on the iMac, which means having to disconnect from the web, does an ethernet hub work and allow me to file share my old G4 with my iMac and not interfere with my web connection. Help appreciated

Hello, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
More details on your setup would help (such as, what do you connect your iMac to in order to access the internet ... I suppose it's a router?)
Assuming you connect your iMac to a router, all you would need is an ethernet switch such as a Netgear GS506 switch. Plug both Macs in to the switch, and connect the switch to your router. There are no settings to make in an ethernet switch such as this.
On the other hand, if your router has more than one ethernet jack (RJ45) you could just plug both Macs into your router; no need for a switch.
But we really need to know what device you connect your iMac to for internet access (BT Home Hub, Verizon Actiontec router, etc), and it would help to know the service, too (BT Broadband, Verizon FIOS, etc.)

  • How do I connect a Maverick imac and a snow leopard mac pro file sharing

I am trying to connect an imac running Maverick,  and an older mac pro 1,1 running snow leopard.  The mac pro does not have airport.  I have tried connecting using my wireless router:  mac pro ethernet conencted and wifi with imac, but I either cannot connect or it takes forever.  I need a more reliable solution.  I bought an airport card for the mac pro. I hurt my foot, and am laid up, and have to access the massive files on the mac pro and external drives with the imac.  They are about 75 feet apart.  The imac uses the wirteless router just fine, which is next to the mac pro.  Which is the better solution,  buying a long enough eitehrnet cable, and direct connect, or install the airport card and connect using airport?  One more concern, I noticed my neighbor has  a mac, and his mac keeps showing up on the network as a lockede but selectable mac.  I am concerned about my security.  Which is best, and what is the sequence to set it up?  I can see that a step by step process with proper sequence and settings is critical to get tis to work.  Thanks for any help.

How are you currently trying to connect? The easiest method for setting up across operating systems would be to connect using AFP, the standard protocol Macs use to share files over a network (though, SMB2 is now the default method in Mavericks). Are you attempting to simply transfer data from one machine to the other, or set up a local network between these machines? If it is the former, the easiest method may be to use an external HDD to copy data from one machine and then transfer it to the other.
    See below for AFP:
Mac Basics: File Sharing - Support - Apple
    And a youtube video:
Mac 10.6 OS X Tutorial - File Sharing -AFP FTP and SMBS - Video ...
One more concern, I noticed my neighbor has  a mac, and his mac keeps showing up on the network as a lockede but selectable mac.
This is normal. You would need to explicitly grant your neighbor access to your machine for him to access anything on the machine, just as you need to do the same with your own computer you are attempting to connect.

  • Need help file sharing with a powermac G4 and ibook

I need to transfer files from my G4 to an ibook. I am using ethernet slot B on the G4 and the ibook has an airport card. I also have a router. Does anyone have an easy way to do this? I want to set up a connection between these two computers without using the internet. Appletalk is active on the g4, and file sharing is on yet the activity monitor does not show the ibook as a connected user. I tried to find the G4 on the ibook by connecting to server but it does not recognize the g4 when I either type the name of the computer or browse the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would a CD writer for the G4 be a better option?
    Thank you.

I tried to find the G4 on the ibook by connecting to server but it does not recognize the g4 when I either type the name of the computer or browse the network.
If you are running Mac OS before 9 and trying to connect to Mac OS after 10.3, you will not be able to do it without additional software.
If you connect the iBook to the router with an Ethernet cable, you may be more successful, as some routers do not pass AppleTalk packets from wireless to wired.
The FireWire approach will also work, and yes, it mounts the other computer's drives on your desktop.

  • Desperate - file sharing issue from MacBook to IMAC

I'm reaching the end of my tether - I am using a new IMAC as my central computer which gets backed upto onto a time capsule - I have a MacBook which I wish to be able to access the files on the IMAC, make changes and save ( word, excel) - this is so that when my wife is at the main computer I can still work on my college work that’s on the IMAC.
I log into both machines with the same user / password - on the IMAC I have enabled file sharing for the documents folder and given myself read& write access - I have done this via the system preferences method ( using the sharing option) and the get info method by right clicking on the folder - via the get info method I have enabled ' apply to enclosed items ' so that the permission rights are applied to all files in the folder.
I access the IMAC from the finder window on the MacBook - connect as me ( ie the same user and password that I have logged onto both machines with ) and then find the file that I need to work on - it opens but when I come to save its says the fie is read only - what is odd is that on the same file from the MacBook I can change the name of the file and even delete it remotely from the MacBook.
I have tried various permutations to see if I can ascertain the route cause – for example - if in the sharing preferences window I activate file sharing, in the shared folders window I activate the relevant documents folder on my IMAC but clear the 'users' list of everyone including myself (which in theory should stop me accessing the file on the IMAC from the MacBook I’m assuming ) then when I try to access the folder /files from my MacBook I still get the same issue - I can open docs but can't save
    help ....help .... help .....!

If you are logging in to the account on the remote machine, you already have read/write privileges. If it is the default ~/Documents folder you used the "apply to enclosed items" on, you passed on the "everyone deny delete" ACL entry that was on the folder - you should never use the "apply to enclosed items" option for system created folders. What are the permissions amd ACL entries for the files and the enclosing folder?

  • MacBook air not connecting to iMac for file sharing

Hello, I have a 2012 MacBook Air running Mavericks.
I am trying to connect (for file sharing) to an iMac also running Mavericks.
File sharing is turned on on both computers.  File sharing used to work fine before the upgrade to Mavericks.
Both computers are on the same network.  I can ping the iMac from the Macbook.  I see the iMac listed on the sidebar of my MacBook's Finder as a Shared drive.
Both computers have iCloud turned on.
However, when I click on the iMac in the Macbook's Filder sidebar, it shows up as "Connection Failed."  I click on "Connect As" and nothing happens--no pop up window, nothing.
On the MacBook I am able to use Finder->Go->Connect to Server, enter my iMac's IP address and file sharing works (I can access the files).  But when I go to some other local folder and come back to the iMac server, again I cannot see the files.  Then I have again do Finder->Go->Connect to server, etc.
(On a different MacBook Pro on the same network I had the same problem, but when I clicked on "Connect As" it asked me to choose a user id and password, and I was able to connect using my Apple ID.  However on the MacBook Air I am unable to click on "Connect As.")
Any suggestions on how to fix this will be very much appreciated.
    Best,
    ADD in HK

Sorry for the delayed update. This is issue is resolved by configuring my router to operate on Channel 11.
Looks like my router could operate on Channels above 11 like 12, 13, etc, whereas Macbook Air could recognise only till Channel 11.
Once the router was configured to use only Channel 11, my issue got resolved.

  • How do I move files from my iMac to my Airport without getting 'AirPort can not be modified' message. File sharing is enabled and I'm not getting asked for a password. Thanks

How do I move files from my iMac to my Airport without getting 'AirPort can not be modified' message. File sharing is enabled and I'm not getting asked for a password. Thanks

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
    Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
    AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
    Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

  • How can I move over my iPhoto from iMac 10.5.8 onto new macbook pro Mavericks? Tried file sharing tells me I haven't got the relevant permissions when I try to put it onto desktop. Can someone give noddy instructions on what to do please?

I have tried copying iphoto onto flash drive and then putting on the pro but it just comes up as having no photos in it. Can I have two seperate iphotos on one laptop? I tried file sharing the iphoto library too but just comes up with not having the relevant permissions to put it on the pro. Please help, I'm not massively computer literate and just want my laptop to have photos on. I also need to move my itunes music....how would I do that? I don't want everything from my imac so don't want to use migration assistant. Thank you.

    Hi Thomas,
Thank you again for another very swift response.
The folder got into the Trash because I'm an idiot who didn't think he needed it anymore.
Then I thought: hold on a minute.  I'll pull that back out of the Trash before I delete it, JUST in case.
    And thank goodness I did.

I should have added to my posting (instead of using this "reply" -  it is the server passwork it is asking for and I have never known that I had one and assumed it was the passwork I always used for this type of thing.

  • Oh boy, what did 10.6.2 do to my iMac  file sharing?

Hi all, I upgraded two machines to 10.6.2, an imac and an mbp, both newer but not the newest. All seemed well but for one problem with the imac: file sharing is really hosed. In the system preferences pane/Sharing I now get this behavior:
    1) File Sharing: On, but there are no longer any shared folders or users. I can't add any either.
    2) If I click Options, I see that Share files and and folders using AFP is checked, as is Share files and folders using SMB (Windows) with the proper Account ticked on.
    3) If I try to share a new folder, then tick off Share files and and folders using AFP, it turns to "-" and file sharing is shut off immediately - and then ALL **** BREAKS LOOSE! I lose keyboard, can't open programs, can't use task bar, and icons clicked on the dock disappear.
Here are the events in a less emotional printout:

This looks pretty bad and the behavior has to be the worst I've ever seen on a mac...it's like the entire system becomes unstable. I've tried all the usual things like Checking Permissions and running Disk Warrior. I even ran Applejack auto figuring I could not hose this up anymore. But nothing seems to fix it. The MBP however is just fine with filesharing and 10.6.2, so this seems to be imac specific. Both machines are configured with pretty much the same software.
Another worrying error message in console is this one, only because if I ever get the above resolved, this machine goes back to FCP editing:
Error 11/13/09 9:00:44 PM Error loading /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/DVCPROHDAudio.plugin/Contents/MacOS/DVCPROHDAudio: dlopen(/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/DVCPROHDAudio.plugin/Contents/MacOS/DVCPROHD Audio, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/DVCPROHDAudio.plugin/Contents/MacOS/DVCPROHDAudio: no matching architecture in universal wrapper

Hi there, thx for that. the 10.6.2 upgrade was made with the downloaded combo installer, as I too always do this. I ran it again, as a last ditch for this image, and it changed nothing. It's the strangest thing. I don't have any users under file sharing, and I can't add any directories, and when I try, the entire system goes haywire. Reminds me of the PC days when the MS OS was infected:)
Not sure what to do now, as I really would like to fix this image. And if I can't, I am not sure if I should risk another iMac with the update. I've read about a Finder Error 10180 bug here on the forums, and this one has that too...after the machine goes nuts, finder seems to be corrupt with that same error. Perhaps related?

  • IMac Can No Longer See MBP for File Sharing

    Hello all,
I have had my iMac and MBP set up for ages to see one another and share files. Worked like a charm. Now, all of a sudden, the iMac can no longer see the MBP - but - the MBP CAN see the iMac and connect. Odd??
To my knowledge, nothing has been changed on my end. File Sharing is on. Firewall is off. Both units have the latest updates from Apple and the AEBS has the latest firmware and is working pefectly.
What can I do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Thanks for the help!
Well, when I rebooted the MBP, it magically appeared on the iMac..so I thought all was well. However, I am now suspicious of the iMac as the culprit.
For example, I have a USB Disk connected to the AEBS - and the iMac is connected to it right now, showing the ddisk icon on the desktop. I can browse the contents.
However, when clicking on Network in the Finder, the AEBS does not appear at all! Even though I am connected to the disk. Why would this be?
I am not against trying your idea - but this new information might point us in another direction?

  • Personal File Sharing failure between Leopard MBP and Tiger iMac

    Hi,
I am attempting to give the iMac access to files on the Leopard using Personal File Sharing. Personal File Sharing is turned on on the MBP. The firewall on the MBP has been variously set for Essential Services Only and turned off. The firewall on the iMac is off (it has no internet connection). I have tried both encrypted and unencrypted ad-hoc wireless networking on various channels. I have tried ethernet. The results are always the same:
    1) the MBP will appear in the Network folder of the iMac, but any attempt to connect fails. I am unable even to reach a Drop Box.
    2) the iMac appears in the Shared section of the Sidebar on the MBP, and connections of all kind work without problems
I have no internet connection in the house and am unable to try connecting both Macs to the same WiFi network for testing purposes. I have tried pinging each machine from the other using Network Utility, with failure reported in every case ---however, I'm led to believe this is not unusual in small network circumstances.
One other piece of info that may be relevant: I am also struggling to have my iPod touch found by my MBP when attempting to use the WebDAV protocol to share files with Files Lite. My iMac connects to Files Lite without issue. Stanza Desktop also refuses to find Stanza. Cyberduck will find Files Lite on the network from the MBP (the only app to recognise it in any way from my MBP), but will consistently fail to connect. Perhaps this is related?
Any help would be welcome. I can provide more information as needed. I have only offered the information I thought would be useful, and that fits within my layman's understanding of networking.
    Thanks.
    S.

    Hi,
Well, it's all working fine now. Seems I /hadn't/ tried turning off the firewall on the MBP. The PFS now works with the firewall off or with "Set access for specific services and applications", but not "Essential services only".
*shrugs* I was so sure I'd tried it with the firewall off…
So, thanks! All is now kushti. I may have to grumble to myself a little (and ultimately to Apple) about the lack of co-operation between the firewall and the Sharing prefs, and what I perceive as a poverty (or at least poor layout) of information in the firewall settings pane, though. I mean, why can't the firewall automatically choose the correct setting depending on the Sharing preferences? Or, at least, provide a pop-up that such a change is necessary? Hmm…
    Ta!
    S.
PS: FYI, "guest" sharing was already enabled, presumably by default.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege
