File sharing in 10.4.8 server

hi i posted this in the macbook forum and they told me to come here...
i'm running os 10.4.8 server (not regular) and i can't figure out how to turn on file sharing. i know how to turn it on n 10.4.8 but not the server version. when i go to system preferances > sharing there was no personal file sharing. does anyon know how to turn it on?

You should use workgroup manager and serveradmin to configure most services on your server. More specifically, use serveradmin to turn on/off services and workgroup manager to , well, manage them.
Here's a great place to start.

  • Windows clients unable to access File Sharing since upgrading to Mavericks Server

This summer, I have been tasked to upgrade all the Macs on campus to Mavericks.  Including upgrading to Server 3.1.2.  Previously, we had an Xserve that ran 10.6.8 Server and two Mac mini servers that ran 10.8 Servers.  We have a new Mac mini to replace the Xserve and, initially, everything was pretty smooth.  I built the server from scratch, with the intention of using the 10.6.8 server as reference, only adapting to Profile Manager, instead of using Workgroup Manager.
The only problem I had when I started was that I couldn't get Active Directory to create home folders on my Mac Server "NetUsers" volume when adding a Home Folder path.  After playing around with it, I completely hosed the Server and decided to start over.  Now, after a clean install, I can't get any Windows users to connect to the share on the Mac Server.  It declares: "\\MacServer is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  Account restrictions are preventing this user from signing in.  For example: blank passwords aren't allowed, sign-in times are limited, or a policy restriction has been enforced."  What's more (that I may not have noticed two weeks ago or it just started, I don't know), the 10.8 server that I upgraded to 10.9 also is not accessible and gives the same error.  However, I can access all these file shares from Macs using either smb or afp.
I'm suspicious that this issue is related to SMB1 vs. SMB2 that was implemented differently in Mavericks.
Please, any help on this would be a life-saver.  School starts too soon and I need this running on day one!!!

Had the same issue and spent 4 solid days tracking it down (looking in all the wrong places.)
For us, it turned out to be a problem in DHCP services configuration.
For the subnet under the WINS tab, the NetBIOS Scope had a '1' inserted into the field. Apple's tag when hovering the mouse over the field indicated a domain be insterted.
This prevented the Windows XP machines from successfully registering with SAMBA. Once the field was blanked out and saved, the (one machine) needing to be joined found the PDC and successfully bound to the directory.
Blank out the NetBIOS Scope field in DHCP (assuming a simple LAN environment) and you may be in good shape.

  • Personal File Sharing Problem - Cannot "Connect to Server"

hi, my network (using a base station and an express) has two computers currently connected - a dual G5 (afp://10.0.1.4) and a powerbook aluminum (apf://10.0.1.2). both are connected to the same "server"...laptop via airport and g5 via ethernet.
i have no problem connecting from my g5 to the laptop using the Connect to Server function, but from my laptop, i cannot connect to the G5. when i use the "Connect to Server" function, the "connect" button won't respond. when i "browse," i get the window that says "the alias could not be open, because the original item could not be found" fwiw, i can connect to ftp servers from my laptop without problem...personal firesharing is on for both computers, and firewalls are off.
    any suggestions?

    powerbook aluminum (apf://10.0.1.2)
    Gene, hopefully just a mistype!?
I think we should start of by getting Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Besides, once you really, really need it... you can't install it!
I mean, I know where those Aliases are, but sounds like more is involved.

  • Server Admin. file sharing lion client to Snow leopard server

I'm running Lion on my client Mac and my Server is Snow leopard 10.6.8.  I have to use Server Admin 10.7 on Lion but there is no "File Sharing" tab to set up or edit the file sharing options on my 10.6 server?.  I understand this is correct for Lion Server, but how do I get round it for Snow leopard Server??  On the Apple website compatibility page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1822) it states:
    "Mac OS X Server v10.6
To administer a Mac OS X Server v10.6-based server, you can use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on a Mac OS X v10.6 (client) computer. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8. You may also use the Server Admin Tools 10.7 on an OS X Lion computer to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6."
So, How do I administer file sharing???

To configure File Sharing on a 10.6 server using 10.7 Server Admin, click the service (AFP, SMB, NFS, etc.) then click the Share Points tab.

  • The Windows SMB feature has file locking if multiple users are accessing the same file.  Does Snow Leopard Server File Sharing (AFP) provide similar features?

The Windows SMB feature has file locking if multiple users are accessing the same file.  Does File Sharing (AFP) on Snow Leopard Server provide similar services?

Were you ever able to solve this problem. I'm having similar issues since upgrading to snow leopard. Four macs connect to a Windows Server 2003 for shared files. Each user has full permissions & when we "get info" it shows read & write permissions. Two of the computers were running 10.4, two were running 10.5. Everything worked properly until upgrading to snow leopard. Some files let me copy, move, delete. Others either just hang up or we get a "no permission" error. Also getting a "pdf is in use" error, even when the file/folder doesn't contain a pdf. We had our IT rep check the server who said everything is in working order. They don't represent macs any longer but feel that it's a mac problem. I would have to agree since this problem only started after the upgrade, and the one machine that was not upgraded (still running 10.5.8) is not dealing with these problems.
Lastly, I would install 10.5 back on all of the computers if I could, but the leopard disk that came with one of the computers wouldn't work with the 2 machines running 10.4 and I didn't see it available at the apple store. I'll buy it if it's still available, but why wouldn't the disks that I have work?
    Thanks for any help

  • Lion kernel panic when file sharing

I had several kernel panics today while encoding mpeg, both on OSX 10.7.2 and 10.6.8 (I have both installed in the same machine, but on separate drives in bays 1 and 2).
It only seems to happen when I'm file sharing from our OSX Lion Server 10.7.2. All sharing is done at 1000Mbps over Cat6 Ethernet and has a quality switch to mange it. Ethernet ports on both the server and the encoding station are link aggregated.
The encoding software I'm using is Telestream Episode Pro 6.2.1 and I have verified the node and file paths, everything looks normal. But it crashes when this program's encoding processes are running, so I'm listing it as a culprit.
This workflow has performed perfectly before, so I'm not sure why it's so unstable now.
This is the report I got after rebooting:

    Any thoughts?

  • Best Practises for File Sharing and Print Server on Windows Server 2012

Is it better to have File Sharing and Print Server installed on the same Windows 2012 Server ?
Or, they should be installed on 2 different Windows Servers ?
    Hussien Sherief

It will work just fine to combine them.
But most people would recommend keeping functionality separate... if the budget allows.  That whole "single point of failure" concept.  If that server dies, you've lost both of those functions.

  • How can I allow network users to use File Sharing on 10.8 Server?

I am in the process of setting up a new OS X 10.8 Server. I have exported/imported the network users from my previous OS X 10.6.8 Server using Workspace Manager. I have re-entered the passwords of the users. I have existing clients running (stil logged in).
I have set up the File Sharing service in Server.app. I have several mount points. I have made the Users mount point available for home directories over AFP.
Now, the system administrator can connect to the server and get access to the file shares. So the basic file sharing system works.
Also: the users on a client can get there password verified (e.g. when unlocking screen protection) by the server. It is just AFP they can't get access to, while the system administrator account (OD /Local on the server) can be used. So, the password in the server is OK too. It seems to be a matter of privileges.
But no network user (OD user in directory /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 on the server) can get access. Where can I give network users privileges for File Sharing on the server?
I did try to add either the "Open Directory Users" group or a specific user that was imported into com.apple.access_afp. If I do that, there is partial success. I can connect to the server from the client with a user account other than system administrator from the server (but connecting is slow). But Mobile Home Sync does not work:

    Hi Gerben,
Try creating a brand new user, that's not imported and see if that works. Every user/group has a little gear in the Server.app/Users or Groups which allows specific access to specific services, perhaps filesharing is off in that section?
Is your DNS setup properly? Can you verify that clients can see the FQDN of your server?
After setting up the Users folder for mobilehomes, did you check whether the group and the separate users have access to filesharing? I am able to select the correct homefolder /Users and restrict the homefolder size.
    Goodluck!

  • How do I set up file sharing in Lion Server to work like file sharing in Lion Client?

I've just installed Lion Server on my home iMac to enable remote access via VPN to my home network.
When the iMac was running Lion Client (before the upgrade to server), and when File Sharing was enabled on the iMac; when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP, they were always able to connect to (share) any mounted external volumes (external USB or FireWire drives connected to the iMac). e.g.
Now that I've upgraded to Lion Server, when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP they are only able to connect to (share) the sharepoints listed in the File Sharing pane of Server.app. e.g.
Is there any way to set up File Sharing in Lion Server so that it works the same way as it does in Lion Client with respect to mounted external volumes? i.e. they are automatically shared? I know I can add each volume manually to File Sharing in Server.app but this gets tedious.
    Many thanks!

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • How to delete the Calander Server account under the options tab in file sharing in your system preferences?

When I go under System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Options there is an account listed called "Calender Server" that is checked. When I try to uncheck it, it asks for a password to turn it off and I don't know the password. How do I either turn this off or get rid of it?

Better still, try Apple - Support - Discussions - Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard.

  • File sharing in the File server preference pane

System preferences to File Server to File sharing. When I choose a share point folder and want to change permissions, I click the radio button to restrict access to certain users and save. When I re-enter the the folder it defaults back to let everybody have access. If I try to delete the folder it won't delete. When I create a new folder by re-choosing the folder, I get <folder Name>1 and then I cannot delete it. Is there a plist in preferences I can delete to clear this problem?

    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for your answer.
There must be something wrong in the different steps I follow.
Firts I set Time machine on the server for each user, shoosing the Volume "SmartStor" (a network volume attached on the Mac Mini server) it creates a "Shared items" folder with a "Backups" folder in.
In Server Admin tools I can see in the AFP services the share point /Backups
In Workgroup Manager I set the Time Machine's preferences for the different computers and computers' group with the path afp://myserver.local/Backups/
At least on my client's computer I can shoose the volume "Backups" "on my server".
And it doesn't work... even with all the logins and password, User's, Dir Admin and Server Admin.
With User's and Dir Admin it runs quickly and tells "the volume is not reachable on account of wrong user's name or password"
With Server Admin login and password it runs indefinitly, nothing occurs ...
Is there something to do in terminal ?
Well I tried to find explanations on the web but I found nothing for the moment... The informations are to set a network volume in Terminal in place of the default one...
'Hope to find soon, I can't stand that something runs for every one but not with me...

  • Lion Server file sharing

Hi guys, I have a client running Lion server 10.4, and roughly 5 Mac's around the office all running lion 10.4. Everything was setup and running smoothly until this morning when he lost all file sharing to the server. (Data is stored on the server and Mac's connect through finder>network>server) When hitting "connect as" there is no login window, the black bar just says "connecting" and doesn't get any further. I have tried restarting the file sharing service from the server, connecting manually via its IP with both AFP and SMB to no avail. I have also tried turning off AFP on the server and restarting that, as well as adding other shared folders, opening up permission etc. Hoping someone has an idea of what's going on!

No problem! We rebooted the server to no avail, and the client iMac. It's all sorted now, I was logged in remotely so I couldn't see all the machines at once, according to my client it just started working but I'm pretty sure there's some detail he left out in what he was doing. It did however seem to be an issue only on the one workstation so all good! Thanks for the quick response

  • Lion server file sharing issue with windows API read/write ini file (GetPrivateProfileString)

    Hello,
I try to config lion server as file server for a windows application we use at work. All other computers are windows 7 or XP, lion server is the only mac. I choose lion server because it's size, quality and personal love of apple products.
10.7.2 lion server's samba file sharing works almost perfectly with all my windows machines, I can copy, delete, modify any text files or office files without any issue, but the most important windows application for my business doesn't work with samba file sharing. After some digging, I found it is because windows program can't read or write INI file stored on lion share. Windows API GetPrivateProfileString always returns empty if the INI file is store on lion share.
You can download a small application for read/write windows INI file from codeproject.com to test this problem:
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/ini.aspx
I can open/edit the in file using any text editor without any problem. The only problem is with those windows APIs. ACL is turned on for my lion share and assigned "delete" rights to samba users.
I install samba3 on the same server; it works perfectly with windows API. My windows program also works. Looks like there is something wrong with lion server's sambax.
I'd prefer to use built-in samba even I have samba3 working. Built-in samba is very immature right now, but considered how young it is, I will give apple some time to make it mature.
Does anyone have same issue or knows how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Michael.

All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance.

  • Got Connect to Server to work again, file sharing 4.9 to 10.1.5!!!

    Folks:
Have a number of unanswered questions lost on this forum, and been following as many of the threads pertaining to file sharing as possible--and finally pieced some of the suggestions, mostly from BDAqua, together and got the two units to connect. Before this I got "Log In Failed" or "Connection failed" error windows. Haven't had time to actually move files, but I did open some JPEG's from the 10.1 computer in the 10.4.9 . . . what got it working doesn't totally make sense--but it worked.
When I first posted my issue after erase & upgrade from 3.9 to 4.9 BD asked me if I had another User in account to do some testing with--and I said yes, but what will that do? And he said, ah, you could test things . . . wasn't real encouraging--I think I logged into one new account and tried to connect and it FAILed. Went on to the "roll the AppFileServer kext back to 4.8 version--didn't work. Kept whining--eventually everybody stopped replying. Then I saw another comment by BDAqua answering someone about some issue with having the same user name when trying to use File sharing; that was awhile back.
Today--put those ideas together and logged both computers into the other user and then used Connect to Server, entering IP address--got the Log In window--put password in and--IT CONNECTED, but only to a "Drop Box" folder that I didn't have "privileges" to open. Following another thread's idea I changed both of those accounts to "allow user to administer computer" in Acounnts. In Tiger I had to log back into the main account to do that--and then I tried to connect, and that time it worked. The most important thing is having another user name to enter--and then I could get access to the HD of either computer. Still some things to work on--going from the iBook to the iMac I can open all files, going from the iMac back to the iBook I can mount the HD, but some of the original files in my Home folder have red minus's and can't be opened. What was odd is that both of my other user accounts have the same name/password, but I could connect; but couldn't with the main accounts--having the same name/password. When I changed those extra accounts into admin also and then logged back into main accounts--I connected by using the name/password of the OTHER account in the second computer.
The Key is as BD "recalled seeing somewhere" that the User name should be different, so you can use another account on that computer. In Panther it didn't matter if both computers had the same name--in Tiger apparently it does. Hope this helps--took me a lot of messing/time to bring all the details together--1.5 months. A head's up from Apple might have been--nice???

    Rick/BDAq:
Verbosity doesn't really begin to cover it--that was the short version of the process. 1.5 months ago had 15 posts--100 posts later a solution was developed. Don't know if rolling back the kext to 4.8 is needed--won't get a chance to try doing a full install of 4.9 + Security update on my Ext HD to test what is really necessary. Or whether it is necessary to make the New Account an administrator or not; when they connected it was so surprising and so simple. I'd like to find the thread where it shows how to change the original User Name for the admin/computer & see if that is all that is needed. Like all creative people I named my units after me, my name. Now I'd like to change one to be "Johnny" or I'll name it "Tiger" after all the fiddling it's taken to find such a simple solution--I've grown attached to my OS. : - 0
Haven't had the chance to check the link to Hornware--thanks Rick, but Firefox couldn't find the server. BD--thanks for being there, buddy.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.
