File sharing is sharing ALL my files across my network

I have a regular router/modem provided by my ISP.
I have an iMac connected to the router via ethernet.
I also have a Macbook connected to the gateway via wireless.
When I turn File Sharing ON on my iMac, it doesn't just share my "Public Folder" like I tell it to, it shares everything!!!... my entire hard disk and external drives attached.
Can anyone tell me why this might be happening? All I'd like is to have a folder that myself and the Macbook user ca use to share files on. Not the entire iMac.
Any help appreciated

Here is what you will need to do.
1st. Know the short name of each user on the computer you want to share with.
for example I have my daughter as a managed account Full Name: My Daughter Short Name: mydaug
Now what you have to do is go to your other computer which is showing your entire hard drive on and open up *System Preferences* go to Accounts and click on the + symbol and create a new user account under *Sharing Only* then give the Full Name under Name & the *Short Name* under Short Name as it appears on your other MAC. give them a password to use.
Keep in mind that the user accounts on the other MAC's should not have Admin rights they should be standard or managed users only for this to work cause you don't want them to able to change or delete keychains at all.
Now go to your sharing folder under *File Sharing* select the folder you want to share and then add the user to it's group. Now you should be able to add the users you just created for a certain folder or hard drive for that matter.
2nd. Now we need to go back to the other MAC and connect via the shared drives, if your automatically connected make sure you disconnect as the user & reconnect as the user you created. Which in my case would be my daughters short name & password, and click to save password to keychain. then connect.
Now even if you disconnect and connect again it will automatically connect as that same user rather then the admin as it was doing before.

  • How to share files across my network from Belkin N

I have a belkin N+ router that you cant plug a USB hard drive or a flash drive into to share the files across the network. It shows my router as a device on the network but gives me the same error message every time I try to acess them. How can I set this up from my Mac, what do I need to to do?

I had the same problem. I was first getting an error on my PC about the library being created with a newer version of iTunes. I upgraded my PC to 8.1 and am now receiving the following error when trying to open up the shared library:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13005)."

  • Why can't I copy a file across a network?

I am having a very peculiar problem copying a simple text file across a network.  The problem occurs when I try to copy from a newly purchased and newly upgraded MacBook (13 inch aluminum 08) to a 2010 Mac mini.
When I try to copy from the MacBook to the mini, Document folder to Document folder, I get this message:
A new item named “filename” already exists in this location.  Do you want to replace it with the one you’re moving?
If I click Replace, I get this message.
The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “” already exists.
If I click Keep Both, the process begins to create thousands (yes thousands!) of numbered copy files with the same file name and zero contents.
Copying from the MacBook to a different Mac works normally.
The problem, I suppose, stems from the fact that I migrated my user account from the Mac mini to the MacBook.  But, I’ve done that before without a problem, so what is happening?
I also suppose that the solution is to delete the migrated user account on the MacBook and create a new one, but that’s a nuisance.
    Can anyone solve this puzzle?
    Thanks-
    Robin

Sorry I couldn't help.  You mention copying a simple text file, then mention ~/Documents to ~/Documents, then finally mention migration assistant.
It's honestly not too clear what you're tyring to accomplish.  Do you have mutliple user accounts now and you want to thin them down?  Do you simply want to get your Documents from the mini to the new computer?  I copy between Macs all the time (ML to Mavericks, Mavericks to Mavericks).  The worst thing I've faced is the need to reset home permissions and ACLs.
Many of the guru's who frequent the Mavericks area also come here.  I'm sure one of them can help.  Good luck.

  • Copying files across the network changes their permissions... Why?

Okay, I have several Macs running Leopard 10.5.5. All of my users store their working files in their Shared folders so other people who log into their Mac have access to them so they can make corrections/changes etc.
We also configure the Shared Folder to be shared under File Sharing --> Shared Folders pref pane. The permissions are set there for Everyone to have Read/Write. The problem occurs when a user connects via the network to another users' Mac Shared Folder and copies a file to their Mac. Once they copy the file the permissions change to Everyone Read Only.
My question is why and can I keep the permissions intact?
    Thanks

that's how it's supposed to work. a new file is created on the other computer and it acquires standard permissions for new files. this can not be changed.
what you can do is make sure they always copy those files to a particular directory and put ACLs on that directory that give everyone read+write rights to everything in it. For example, make a folder inside /Users/Shared directory. call it, say "sharedstuff".
then run the following terminal command
    chmod +a "everyone allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
    /Users/Shared/sharedstuff
now everything you copy to that folder will be read+write by everyone even if you do this across a network.

  • Sharing isn't working across a network

I've run across a problem when I try to share my library across my network at home. I can see my wife's music library, but although she can see my libraray listed, when she tries to connect to it, it fails. I have checked in the sharing preferences and all the right boxes are ticked, but alas no luck.
I have also had the same problem with my iphone- it detects the library and then cannot connect either.
I am running itunes 7.6.2 on Mac os x 10.5.4 and my wife's mac is running 10.4.11
    Any ideas?

Very strange! I guess I didn't realize that you were working with a mixed network, though I don't think it should matter. Is the computer whose collection you are accessing a Mac or Windows machine? How about the other computers on the network? It is possible that you may need to cross-post this on the Windows iTunes board.
Anybody out there with experience with mixed networks? (mine is Mac-only)

  • How to I copy files across a Network using 10.9?

On earlier versions I could find another Mac on the network and log into it to enable me to see the file structure.  To copy files from one machine to another i just dragged a file or folder full of files from the folder on the source machine to a folder on the destination machine.  Since upgrading my machine to 10.9 I find that the files on the destination machine are all 'denied access'.  This was never an issue before.  Is this a bug or is there a setting somewhere set to a different default than before that I need to find and change?

When you select the destination Mac, do you still login with the user account that has Read/Write access?
Do the shared folders on the destination Mac have your user account included for Read/Write access?

  • Problem saving files across Mac network

Hi all, hoping someone has run into this and can help—
We're running into a problem working with trying to find a way to have multiple users modify the same indd file without having to change the Sharing and Permissions on an individual file basis?

Not a server per se (and maybe that's the problem), but it's just one Intel iMac running Leopard with the InDesign files on it, and one newer iMac running Snow Leopard trying to read/work with the files. The protocol is AFP. For the second user (newer Mac) it forces a "Save As" instead of "Save" and then denies permission to overwrite the original. If they save the file locally and replace the original, the same thing then happens to the first user.
We've checked permissions on the files, and everything should be accessible. I'm wondering if the differing versions of the OS might have something to do with it, though I don't know why it would. Will upgrade anyway, but in the meantime Adobe keeps saying it's a Mac issue, and Mac keeps blaming Adobe. Thanks for taking the time to respond, btw.

  • Itunes 8.1 no longer able to share files across my network

I run 4 computers in the house and have all my video housed in one central point (a pc). Everything ran great until the new Itunes. Now i am unable to access anything on the PC. any advice? The rest of the computers are mac's and seem to be ok. The PC library shows up but when you click on it it just disappears. And just to beat the unhelpful to the punch. Yes I could just go all apple but I need my pc box for some applications. Any advice would be great.
It used to "just work" but I fear that era is over and done.

I had the same problem. I was first getting an error on my PC about the library being created with a newer version of iTunes. I upgraded my PC to 8.1 and am now receiving the following error when trying to open up the shared library:

  • Can't See Some Files Across Mac Network

I have my Mac Pro tower (Leopard) set to completely share with my Mini (Snow Leopard). There a many folders and files residing on Pro I cannot see on Mini. Many seem to be Open Office files (although I can see many other Ooo files). I have tried moving the files that can't be seen manually from the Pro to the downloads folder on the Mini and they still doesn't show up on the Mini!

Hmmm, by the lack of response, perhaps this issue is unique?? I can't find anything on the internet that is this same prob I'm having either. Did I perhaps screw something up when setting the 2 Macs up to see each other?
There are also entire file folders I've made within Documents on the Pro (Leopard) that are just competley missing when I look for them on the Mini (Snowleopard). This is very strange as I can see all other sub folders in this particular master folder within Docs and the missing folder contains many and all sorts of files... not just Open Office files.

  • Home sharing is not working across my network since ios 6 and iTunes upgrades. Any ideas?

I have updated my IPhone 4, ipad 2, and atv2 to ios6 and my win7 pc to the latest iTunes. I have just noticed homesharing is not working on any devices. I have tried the usual disable re enable etc to no avail. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Alan.
You're not alone; it's happening to others too. There's a thread about it here.

  • Leo insists on sharing all of my files

I have my music shared across the network here at home. For some reason Leo has the root of every drive shared with full read/write access. They arent listed in the Shared Folders list, but they are shared... How can i share just one folder as read-only?

I think we should start over.
Turn file sharing off, then back on.
Click on options… and select SMB sharing.
Add a folder you wish to share out
Select the users you want to have access to that folder by using +/- buttons.
--To add a sharing only user, click the "+" button and click New Person button
    Other known issues:
With the default network locations, you can't get a WINS workgroup name to stick. You have to create a new network location and then add it to that one. You can just duplicate Automatic and delete the original Automatic. I think this only affects windows shares showing up in Shared section of sidebar.
If you share out a folder, you have to make sure that other people have access to read the enclosing folder(s). For instance, all of the folders inside of your Home folder lock everybody out, except for the Public folder. If you try to share a folder that is in your Music folder, nobody will be able to view it because they don't have access to your Music folder. See this MacOSXHints article.

  • Sharing all files

I'm connecting my iBook and iMac through Airport and am brand new at this. From reading the discussions here, am I correct that it's not possible to share my files unless they're in the "Shared" folder? I'd like to be able to access my account easily from both but don't know how to do this easily.
    Thanks for any help.

The "shared" folder is for sharing files in between two users on the same computer. It's not related to "file sharing" on a network.
If you have turned on "Personal File Sharing" in the Sharing System Preferences and you know your own user's short name and password, you'll be able to access all of your files across an AirPort network.

  • Sharing jar files across multiple web sites

    Dear all,
We have an applet as part of an embedded device. I wish to share the jar files across multiple devices. i.e. Accessing 192.168.0.1 shouldn't download the jar files again if the same jar files exist in the cache as a result of download from 192.168.0.2. We are having very large applet jar files, hence reducing download times is a top priority. Is there some way to do that ? Will java web start help in this ?
    regards,
    Jay

generally for avoiding applet downloading again the best solution is to use applet cahing, just add cache_archive in your html code (for full reference please go to the jdk javadoc ). Of course the problem are diffrent ips 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, applet caching will work ONLY for one ip, when you serv second sever name/diffrent ip client jvm will treat this applet as something new and will download it . The best solution i think is to sever everything on one server page/ip etc, but as you mentioned it is not good solution.
Well you can make it if you want to serve your big jar file on diffrent ips/severs, How? You should ctreate small certified applet jar , inside it should be code that will download your huge jar file from any location you want and store IT on CLIENT machine, becouse that jar will be certified so applet with file functions will not ask user to accept dialogs etc, so that applet will create locall on client machine little cache were all files that were downloaded will be stored. And again when user will acess your page that small certfied jar file will check if cache folder exist and if inside it is your huge file.
    cheers
