File sharing issues in one direction through ethernet cable

I have 2 macs, running 10.6.8.  I have connected them through an ethernet cable.  I have turned file sharing on.  I can connect to the other computer on both computers, and I can see the directories in the finder on both computers.  If I go to my desktop computer and try to copy something from the laptop to the desktop computer, it asks for a login, and then it copies no problem.
If I go to the laptop and try to do the same copy (laptop to desktop computer), I enter my password and get:
The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.
If it's a single file I try to copy, then I get:
The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “” already exists.
And a zero-byte file is copied to the desktop computer.
I note that when I try from the desktop, I don't get the file sharing login where I can choose guest of registered user.  I get a finder permission login instead.
What gives?  Do i have some setting wrong somewhere?
Thanks
Mark

You can do this if you keep your wits about you and manage the unexpected additional complexity.
Keep in mind:
The sharing login screens presented each time you reach across to the other Mac request the name and password of a User on the REMOTE computer, but are on the screen of the local computer.
If you are not connected to the User you need, or are connected as "Guest", break the connection and connect again as the specific user you need.

The OS X Mountain Lion I tried to download Wi-Fi on Mac Book Pro was not successfull. Should I buy it again? Should I check with Apple store for credit?
I successfully instaled it in iMac, but have problem with laptp. I also think I should not have bought 2 upgardes, becase if I have 2 computers, one paid upgrade is good for both computers. Am I wrong? SOmeone can advise how to proceed? I want to try again through Ethernet - cable internet - instead of Wi-Fi. Thank you

You should not have paid twice. If you logged into the App Store with the same AppleID as you used to purchase Mountain Lion the first time, you should not have been charged again.
If you internet connection is not working well enough to download it, do you have access to another network that might be faster? Perhaps and Apple Store nearby?

I'm having the same problem.  It's not an issue with my TV, i've turned this feature off.  I've tried playing with the ATV display settings but nothing works.  When I stream netflix from my Samsung bluray player, I don't get the soap opera effect, but when I stream any video from the ATV, the soap opera effect is there.  I'm thinking it's a choice that Apple made, but I really wish it could be turned off.  Not a lot of people are searching for this, because it can be easy to overlook, but it's driving me nuts!

  • At a total loss on a file sharing issue

I have been using file sharing for years and have never had a problem. Tonight that streak has come to an end and I feel stupid!
I have built myself a PC for work. However, I want to be able to share files with my Mac on it. Here is my setup... On my Mac, I have a hard drive that I have made into 2 partitions. One partition is a FAT32 format, specifically so that I can share files with my PC. I have gone into file sharing and set it up so that drive will be shared with my PC. From my Mac, I can connect to the PC and the My Documents folder on it.
However, when I get on the PC I can not see my Mac unless I connect using the ftp://ip address format. Even then I do not see the drive I am trying to share. I see my Documents folder on my Mac, which is not what I want to share.
I have done searches on here as well as Google throughout the day and can not find anything that addresses this specific issue. Can anyone give me some things to look for? I am fried!

Never mind, as usually happens after making the post, I finally found a link to guide me with what I did wrong.

  • Lion server file sharing issue with windows API read/write ini file (GetPrivateProfileString)

    Hello,
I try to config lion server as file server for a windows application we use at work. All other computers are windows 7 or XP, lion server is the only mac. I choose lion server because it's size, quality and personal love of apple products.
10.7.2 lion server's samba file sharing works almost perfectly with all my windows machines, I can copy, delete, modify any text files or office files without any issue, but the most important windows application for my business doesn't work with samba file sharing. After some digging, I found it is because windows program can't read or write INI file stored on lion share. Windows API GetPrivateProfileString always returns empty if the INI file is store on lion share.
You can download a small application for read/write windows INI file from codeproject.com to test this problem:
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/ini.aspx
I can open/edit the in file using any text editor without any problem. The only problem is with those windows APIs. ACL is turned on for my lion share and assigned "delete" rights to samba users.
I install samba3 on the same server; it works perfectly with windows API. My windows program also works. Looks like there is something wrong with lion server's sambax.
I'd prefer to use built-in samba even I have samba3 working. Built-in samba is very immature right now, but considered how young it is, I will give apple some time to make it mature.
Does anyone have same issue or knows how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Michael.

All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance.

  • File sharing issue with Leopard and Windows XP

I had no problem with file sharing (see the Windows machine on Leopard) before I reinstall the XP and update to SP3.
Now I cannot get the XP shared disk displayed on Leopard Finder. I looked through some guides and check these:
    Both the two laptops are in the same workgroup called "WORKGROUP";
    XP firewall disabled;
    XP Guest Account enabled.
But I just cannot get the Windows icon back to the left column of my Finder. Have I missed something? Any body with any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Strange file sharing issue - need guru!

I know how file sharing works.  This isn't a basic problem.
I have a volume with a folder containing music files that I want to share to a Windows 7 PC.  I turned on sharing and it worked just fine, EXCEPT that I couldn't set the permissions to read only for the sharing user.  I have OTHER folders that I can set read-only.  I know how permissions work.  But I tried just about everything I could think of, with no luck - when mounted on the Windows machine, it was R/W.
So, searching around, I found a post talking about xattr on the directory.  I have a fair amount of UNIX experience.  I pulled up the terminal and sure enough, this folder had an xattr attribute from the Finder.  Thinking that this might be the cause of the permissions problem - and since none of the other folders have this attribute, I decided to kill it (xattr -d).
Now when I try to share the folder, everything looks good on the Mac side, it just doesn't appear on the Windows machine.  I can still see my public folder.  I've also created other shared folders - and they work.  EXCEPT, I can't create ANY folder on this volume which will share.
    Setup details:
    Mac Mini (2011) with Lion
    1 internal drive
1 external USB drive with 2 partitions (Data, Music)
All volumes are Mac OS Extended, Journaled
The Music volume has a folder "Music" which I'm trying to share.  (There are other folders which I don't want to share.)
I am successfully sharing folders from the internal drive and the other partition (Data) on the USB drive.  As mentioned above, I created another folder on the Music volume - and that one won't share either.
At this point, I'm pretty stumped.
(and yes, I know about music streaming in itunes.  I need actual file sharing in this case.)

    More info...
If I check "ignore ownership" on the volume, I can share folders on the volume.  However the permissions set in the sharing control panel are ignored.  Any user can modify (R/W) the shared folder.
If I uncheck "ignore ownership" on the volume, and set the permissions, and "apply to enclosed items", I can no longer share the folder, regardless of the permissions defined in either the sharing control panel, or the folder's get info.
My internal (root) drive has permissions, and sharing works on that volume.  I checked the other USB volume, and it looks like ownership is ignored.
Is this a known issue, that you can't share from a USB drive unless "ignore ownership" is selected?

If you are connecting the two computers directly to each other with an ethernet cable, you need a special "crossover" cable to swap the send/receive pins so the data sent from one computer arrives on the "receive" pins on the other end of the cable, not on the "send" pins that you get with a straight cable.
Incorrect, you do not need a special crossover cable. Any cable will do.

  • File Sharing Issue 10.7.5 to 10.9.1

I have a '06 Mac Pro running 10.7.5; and I have 2 laptops running 10.9.1. For some reason my file sharing does not work from my Mac Pro; before the upgrade even with Mountain Lion I I was able to connect to my Mac Pro. Now since upgrading to Mavericks I can no longer connect to my Mac Pro. All computers can see each other on the network; however the only one that cannot be connected to is my Mac Pro.
When I click on the Mac Pro on my laptop I immediately get "Connection Failed"; when I click "Connect As" I do not get a popup to insert login info, instead I get a box that reads "There is a poblem connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator." This error happen on both my laptops a 2013 Mac Air and a '07 Macbook Pro; however the Macbook actually brings up the user input box but eventually gives the same error.
The insteresting thing is in an attempt to resolve I tried to turn File Sharing on a off on my Mac Pro; however I cannot uncheck file sharing. All other options check and uncheck successfully however File Sharing darkens when I click it, the computer hangs for a few minutes and then goes back to normal checked instead of unchecked.
Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreiated.

Same problem here: Mavericks (10.9.2) to Lion (10.7.5) is OK. Lion towards Mavericks is not OK: connection failed.
Cannot resolve the problem so far. You?
Note: I can check/ uncheck everything.

  • File sharing works with one xp machine, not the other

Hi folks, I just switched over to Mac! So far so good with my new macbook. I have two identical gateway xp machines. Strange thing is, the macbook connects perfectly to one of the gateways for file and print sharing, but cannot connect to the other. In finder the name of the computer appears under "shared", but when I click on it, after attempting to connect, it says "connection" failed. For the xp machine in question, I have run the home networking "wizard" and have used trouble shooter. The computer has a unique name on the network, and the directories have been set for sharing. I've tried removing the firewall--though the firewall is instructed to permit networking. So, what can I do? Thanks everybody.

    Interesting.
On the troublesome XP box, set the permissions for your shares are set that "everyone" can read the share. (No need to give write access).
I am assuming that you are using XP Pro and staying away from "Simple File Sharing".

  • Desperate - file sharing issue from MacBook to IMAC

I'm reaching the end of my tether - I am using a new IMAC as my central computer which gets backed upto onto a time capsule - I have a MacBook which I wish to be able to access the files on the IMAC, make changes and save ( word, excel) - this is so that when my wife is at the main computer I can still work on my college work that’s on the IMAC.
I log into both machines with the same user / password - on the IMAC I have enabled file sharing for the documents folder and given myself read& write access - I have done this via the system preferences method ( using the sharing option) and the get info method by right clicking on the folder - via the get info method I have enabled ' apply to enclosed items ' so that the permission rights are applied to all files in the folder.
I access the IMAC from the finder window on the MacBook - connect as me ( ie the same user and password that I have logged onto both machines with ) and then find the file that I need to work on - it opens but when I come to save its says the fie is read only - what is odd is that on the same file from the MacBook I can change the name of the file and even delete it remotely from the MacBook.
I have tried various permutations to see if I can ascertain the route cause – for example - if in the sharing preferences window I activate file sharing, in the shared folders window I activate the relevant documents folder on my IMAC but clear the 'users' list of everyone including myself (which in theory should stop me accessing the file on the IMAC from the MacBook I’m assuming ) then when I try to access the folder /files from my MacBook I still get the same issue - I can open docs but can't save
    help ....help .... help .....!

If you are logging in to the account on the remote machine, you already have read/write privileges. If it is the default ~/Documents folder you used the "apply to enclosed items" on, you passed on the "everyone deny delete" ACL entry that was on the folder - you should never use the "apply to enclosed items" option for system created folders. What are the permissions amd ACL entries for the files and the enclosing folder?

  • Personal file sharing issue

    Hi all,
i have problem with turning on personal data sharing. After clicking Start button text says File sharing starting up, but not start. I lats it for night it not start.
    Thanks for any help
    P.S. sorry for my engllish...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
(Then Trash the original of this one, as "moving" it only copies it.)
    Then reboot once more.
Try to setup Personal File Sharing again.

  • Complete File Sharing Issue

    Hi guys,
have OS X Mavericks - all latest releases + Server App.
File Sharing has been nothing but a huge pain since being installed. Office documents + SMB2 is just one side of it.
I've got a lot of the user base, who connect to the server (via Go > Connect to server), it doesn't seem to matter what method they use, SMB/AFP/CIFS they get some form of permission error.
Constantly asking them to save a copy, they can't move things to the server, they can't delete things etc..
the one thing that keeps coming up is people suggesting joining Macs to the domain, this isn't an option unfortunately.
    I'm out of ideas.

DropBox Pro gives you 1Tb, DropBox for Business is, I think, unlimited. If you use their transfer app. file size in unrestricted.

  • File sharing issue with Itunes

I have a couples of apps from which I can added documents in the file sharing section under the apps tab (in Itunes). After 5 click on any apps in this section, no other files will appear in any of my apps (ex. cloudreaders, Readdledocs, etc..). I'm forced to shut down Itunes and start over.
I updated my Itunes for the last 9.2 (x64, windows version) and I still have the same problem. Please I need advice on hoe to fix this.

Same problem too. I've been scouring the web for days trying to find more info on this. I can't determine if it started when I upgraded to iTunes 10 or iOS 4 ... But I know it was one of those! All the apps I installed that utilize the file sharing feature exhibit the described behavior ... Stanza, Goodreader, PDF Reader, etc. Does anyone know if Apple is aware??
I've been dragging and dropping and that seems to help, so far.

  • File sharing issue - Mac to Windows

HI folks.  I can get file sharing to work fine between my mac and my windows machines but every time I want to do it I have to remote to my mac, disable file sharing then re-enable it.  It works fine until the next day when I want to do it.  It keeps prompting for password until I do the same thing.  What's going on and how do I fix this?  Thanks.               Is there an app that does this easily?

you should create a user on the windows machine with the exact same credentials as the mac, or you will have to input password everytime.
then mount the SMB share on startup in your user account.
I do this and works pretty seemlessly.
