File Sharing Mac OS X with Windows XP

I searched everywhere but couldn't find my exact question. I'm new to the MAC world...
I have a MAC OS X 10.5 at home and I would like to access my home files at work where I have a Windows XP. I'm sure work has a firewall. In my mac I set up an account, and shared to folders that I want to share and given this account read/wright access.
When I have my work laptop at home, and when both are using my router, I can access my MAC files thru my work laptop using FTP no problem.
When I'm at work, I cannot. When I try to access my MAC with the same username and password, it just hangs. I originally thought that it was my firewall at work, but I can access other FTP sites without a problem.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

When you are at home using your router, your computers are effectively on the same domain and on the same subnet. The type of connection you are attempting from work will not be the same, because you will be routing across domains. Most home routers don't use a domain specifically, and issue IPs which fall in the same range so that they can communicate - but that is not the same IP seen across the internet as you are attempting from work. If you are using a share name, that works something like the domain name system of the internet (superficially, not internally) and that won't work from the internet side of your router. To connect from work you'd need to use the external IP your router is assigned which is acting as the gateway between your home network and the internet. This would mean having ports forwarding so that outside connections would be passed on to your Mac - but that would be opening the doors to the world. That would be highly insecure, even for a Mac.
For connecting from work, you would be best to set up a proper secured remote connection of some sort, like a VPN or Remote Desktop connection. Back to my Mac service is probably the simplest way to achieve this connection remotely.

  • Sharing Mac iTunes library with Windows PC (I want to be able to read/write)

Greetings from a new Mac user. I recently purchased a 27" iMAC running OS X 10.7.3. This iMac is now connected to my home network/workgroup.
    - I want to build a new iTunes Library on my 1TB internal Mac HD.
    - I want my 3 non Mac Machines (1 XP Prof and 2 Windows 7 Home) to be able to view the contents of my new (not yet built) iTunes Library resident on my iMac and of course be able to
    - play that content.
    - have play counts from my Windows-based be saved back to my iTunes Library.
    - be able to rate a song from any computer (Mac or Windows) within this iTunes Library and have that rating saved back to this iTunes Library.
I don't want to have to rely on iTunes "Shared Library" function. In other words I want all PCs to be able to read/write to the same iTunes Library file.
Before I purchased my iMac, my iTunes Library existed on one of my Windows-file system external drives. The pre-requisites for allowing multiple Windows PCs to access/share/write to the same iTunes Library was to:
    - share the Windows folder on the external drive in which the iTunes Library file was stored (allowing network users to be able to change the files), and
    - make sure all Windows-based PCs ran the same iTunes software version.
Assume: I don't want to change the version of Windows iTunes software from the currently installed 10.5.0 version.
Question 1: Can my Windows PCs access and utilize the same iTunes library file that I plan to build on my iMac hard drive?
Question 2: What older version of Mac iTunes software should I install on my iMac in order to allow the Windows PCs to access and use the iMacs iTunes library file?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm...  thanks for the reply.  This of course, yields another question.  When you say 'you could format to FAT32 which both can use'; do you mean format the iTunes Hard drive on which my iTunes music now resides?  If so, this would mean I would need to copy the music off the internal iMac hard drive, then format the drive to FAT32, then copy the music back.
    Is this what you meant?

Open your Displays system preferences.  Is there an Arrangement tab and does it show two screens?  If no Arrangement tab then your mac does not know it has two screens.  Maybe smc and pram reset will shake it free and maybe not.  Maybe there's something wrong with the connection.  Thunderbolt plugs are similar to mini-displayport plugs so make sure the plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket.  The plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
If you do see two screens in the Arrangement tab then click Detect Displays and Gather Windows to get the Displays preferences of the other monitor on to your main monitor.  Check the resolution and if there is a refresh rate check that as well.

    Hi There,
We would like to inform you that you have got the serial number for Mac, it would not work on Mac machine as it is OS specific.
If you wish you use a mac machine that you can swap the platform please refer the below mentioned link.

  • How do add .mov files in Premiere Elements 11 with Windows 8? I get a generic error message.

How do add .mov files in Premiere Elements 11 with Windows 8? I get a generic error message.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for your quick response. The original movies were taken on a Canon ES970 (1990's). I don't know the resolution but things were not as high tech back then.,.. I used a Roxio software to convert them on my MacBook Air. I didn't realize that I could use Adobe Premiere Elements to do that or I would have. However my old camera did not have a cable to attach it to a computer and the Roxio software came with it.
I then saved the recordings on an external hard drive. I did not make movies from them using iMovie or edit them in any way. They are simply .MOV files and they can be played on my Mac. Upon realizing how much memory it takes to work on videos, I decided it might be easier to burn DVD's on my husband's  new Dell desktop that came with Windows 8. I downloaded Quicktime as suggested and still the movies can't be added to Premiere.

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • Leopard / Bootcamp / Vista / Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows

On the apple page it says I can copy files from mac to windows?
"Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows
Copy, open, modify, or delete files in Mac OS X that you saved to your Windows partition. Leopard understands the Windows FAT32 disk format."
I tried installing Vista in bootcamp, but it says I cannot install in FAT32? So i format it to NTFS.
So here's my question, Can i still copy files between mac and pc, if I format into NTFS or am using vista?
    Thanks

I am quite a simple soul really and very easily pleased.
All I seek is a partition of some sort that I can save all my created work to - whether in XP Pro or OS X 10.5. But it has to be a large partition - probably a single partition on a large drive.
It would be sweeter still for Spotlight to do what it does (and it does on a FAT partition) and sweeter still for Time Machine to be very user friendly and do what it presently does not do and include created files into the TM.
Now that really would be very pleasant. Very pleasant indeed.

  • Help With File Sharing Mac OS / Windows 7

    Hello,
I have both operating systems on my network. The only files I can not see are the Mac's. Below are the steps I took to insure the Mac to be seen on the network, but I must be missing somethnig. I only see the printer attached to the Mac.
Workgroup -> Both systems set to the same Workgroup name.
Network -> Both systems on the same network system (both are set to static ip's)
File Sharing -> File sharing on Mac is enabled
SMB and AFB -> Are both enabled
User -> User on the account is enabled for SMB and AFP
Folder and Files -> Are set to the User
I think above is set correctly. Just wondering why in my Windows 7 network screen I just see the printers on the Mac and not all the folders I have set to view?
    Thanks JR

    Hello
Found the issue. The permissions were set incorrectly on the files and folders.

  • Files to memory stick from mac not compatible with windows?

Before I installed leopard I was easily able to copy photos, files and other docs to my memory card sticks and have them read on windows no problem but not now with leopard.
What should I do? What's the best format to format the card so that windows users can read my files or that I can transfer my files to a HD from my mac and copy to windows.
    thanks

Well...it seems like my perfectly good 2GB card crashed on me. Your right, it doesn't work on any computer and it even failed the format option in windows.

  • Home Sharing Between Mac and PC with Windows Vista and Wireless Ethernet

    Hello.
I want to ask if anyone knows what is the problem.
I have Home Sharing Activated in my two computers and File Sharing Activated too.
My MacBook Pro has iTunes 10 and Snow Leopard all updated and my PC has Windows Vista and iTunes 10.
My MacBook Pro is connected to my network wirelessly and my PC is connected by the Ethernet Cable.
    Anyone can help?

since you don't describe the problem in detail, see if something here helps:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • File sharing between Mountain Lion and Windows XP

I have both a Windows XP computer and a Mac running Mountain Lion.  I have been able to set up sharing so that I can see the Windows folders on my Mac and the Mac folders on my Windows computer, but I cannot write directly to the folders from either direction.
    What am I missing?

Bear with me ... I've not gone through this before and am only going by instinct.
I assume that since you can see the folder on your Mac, you have File Sharing set to use Windows SMB protocol.
If you put a file on your Mac in the shared folder, can you copy out that file on the Windows system and paste it (to the Desktop) to get access? What about going the other way?
IOW, can you at least get access in both directions to bring a file out of the Shared folder and on to the local system (where it can be changed)?
My other suggestion is to enable Remote Login and set up SFTP access. Then, try writing to the Mac folder on the Windows XP side with a program that supports SFTP from Windows XP.

  • File sharing 10.5 (PPC) with 10.9 Mavericks

Hi, I'm interested in a new macbook air, however I need to ensure that is will network with file sharing to my G5 Power Mac (PPC). This is to transfer files. movies, photos, backup stuff etc . . .
Obviously I can use target mode, and other methods But I'm strickly interested if File sharing over a home network works
    Can anyone confirm this?
    Thank you.

    Got an early start....
    iMac 10.8.5, 10.9.4
    eMac 10.4.11
Both OSX versions on iMac File Sharing & Screen Sharing works both ways, no problem.
PS eMac/10.4.11 needs CoVNC to get iMac's Screen shared.

  • I can't file share or use printers with Windows XP

Im running Leopard and my PC can detect and search my Macbook just fine but not the other way around. Every time i type in the correct user and password for XP it also gives me a "Connection Failed" message. My printer is shared on XP but i can't find it on the Macbook. Can anyone please help me solve this problem, its been driving me nuts for the past week.

    Hi,
A couple of things to check:
    1. On the Windows XP machine, point at, then click My Computer in the Start menu. This opens a window with your disk drives. Point at and right-click the drive you want to share. A property menu will pop up. Click the Sharing tab and set up the sharing policies you want.
    2. Point at and then click Control Panel in the Start Menu. This opens a window or drop-down menu. Point at and open Windows Firewall. Check your firewall settings. If your firewall is enabled, check your Windows sharing. Enable sharing; add it to the list of allowed programs, if necessary. You will probably want to highlight sharing, click advanced and set the scope to allow only the addresses of the LAN segment on which your Mac and Windows machine reside.
The steps above should allow your Windows machine to be seen by the Mac.
The other possible complication that can get in the way is if the Windows machine is XP Professional and a member of a domain. When a machine is on a domain, clients that want to access the machine have to vet their credentials with a domain controller. The domain controller looks in its database and returns tickets to the Windows machine and client that allow the transfer data. Once the domain controller has vetted credentials, it is no longer involved until the tickets reach their expiry time limit. When the machines have valid tickets, they talk to each other directly.
I have not joined a Mac to a Windows domain, but a quick check in a terminal window on my MacBook shows the requisite UNIX utilities for doing so are there. I'll leave that question to somebody with more in-depth Mac skills.
If your machines are on a domain it is important to keep the clocks of the machines relatively synchronized. The time stamps on Kerberos tickets have to by default, in Windows, have to match within +/- five minutes.
If your Windows machine is XP Home Edition or default XP Professional, it will not be on a domain and in fact is usually set by the manufacturer to be a member of the default workgroup named, "workgroup." The Mac should be able to access that as long as your Windows firewall is set to allow sharing. For details, open Help on your Mac and search for, "windows domain," or, "windows sharing."

  • Location of files on MAC to sync with Books in iTunes

I am trying to place a  pdf file I created on my iPad, but don't seem to find the location on my MAC from where I can sync with the iPAD.
    Any help? Thanks

If you want to get it into iBooks on your iPad then you can either drag and drop the pdf onto iTunes, or use File > Add File to Library in iTunes - it should then go into the Books section of your iTunes Library (if Books doesn't show under Library then you can add it via the General tab in Edit > Preferences). You can then drag the pdf from there and across to your iPad and it should go into the iBooks app (assuming that you've installed the app).
If you want to put it into a different app, then depending on ithe app's functionality you may be able to do it via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab, via wifi, or by emailing it to yourself, opening the email on your iPad and doing 'open in'.
