File Sharing Office Docs With Windows PCs

I just upgraded my work computer, 24" iMac (pre-aluminum), to Leopard. At first I was thrilled to see the new file-sharing options in Leopard, as my computer has many company files shared. Before I was using a program called "Sharepoints" to share the files. That program does not work on Leopard.
Unfortunately, shortly after setting up the shared directory, I began getting complaints that people could not access the files in the shared folder. Here's what was happening:
They can get into the directory, and even open up the files (in this case it is excel files).
They can edit them, but when they save them they get the following error:
"The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again."
But they cannot open it again.
When they try to open it again they get the following error: "Excel cannot access 'file.xls'. The document may be read-only or encrypted."
I can open and edit the document just fine on my iMac.
What I have noticed is that it appears to change some permissions of that file when they save it, but only on my username it now says "Custom" instead of "Read/Write". If I go to the parent folder, change the permissions back to what they were before, and apply changes to all enclosed items, they can open the file again and save it once (just like above).
What's the problem? We really need these files shared.

I just submitted an official bug report to Apple which I will reproduce below. I hope this helps someone somewhere.
Summary:
After upgrading (erase and install) my 24" non-aluminum iMac to Leopard, I am unable to share files with other people on the business network. The main culprit appears to be MS Office files.
Steps to Reproduce:
1) Choose the folder I want to share in System Preferences > Sharing > Folders.
2) Apply the appropriate permissions to the folder: (Me) -> Read & Write; owner -> Read & Write; staff -> Read & Write; everyone -> Read & Write;
3) Turn on SMB sharing and check the appropriate accounts.
4) Attempt to access an Excel file with Office from a networked Windows PC.
Expected Results:
Sharing should be normal. Other computers should be able to access, edit, and save all files as if the shared directory were on their own computer.
Actual Results:
5) File opens fine, edits normally, but upon save it issues this error:
(Office 2002): "The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again."
(Office 2007): "Access denied. Contact your system administrator."
6) Document will not reopen again and if you try it gives following error:
(Office 2002): "Excel cannot access 'file.xls'. The document may be read-only or encrypted."
(Office 2007): "Access denied. Contact your system administrator."
Regression:
When examining the permissions on my computer after someone else has accessed and saved it (with Office 2002), my permissions are changed to this: (Me) -> "Custom". If I change the permissions back to normal, recursively, the entire process can be repeated.
If I create a rtf file and save it to the shared folder, it appears that it does not suffer from this problem. This leads me to think that perhaps it is an Office files only issue. Somehow Office is making changes to the permissions when it saves the file (in Office 2002), or does not understand the permissions (Office 2007). The problem exists with Excel, Word, and Powerpoint files.
Notes:
Related problem -- When I create an excel file from another Windows PC and put it in the shared directory on my Mac, I am unable to edit the file from my Mac. The permissions for the file are as follows: nobody -> Read & Write; staff -> Read only; everyone -> Read only.

  • Problem occurring when opening and saving files in AI SC5 with Windows 7

Hi, I ‘am a Graphic Designer and first time working in UAE Windows 7 is basically the only OS here. My PC is:
    HP Elite 7000
    Intel® Core™ i5 CPU 2.67GHz
    4GB RAM
    32-bit
Now to the problem, not that knowledgeable in IT stuff so here goes:
    1. Problem occurring when opening and saving files in AI SC5 with Windows 7. (You will actually see a “Not Responding” word coming out while opening and saving files, whether small or large files)
    2. Locked layers occasionally are moved accidentally.(Working on multiple layers is normal so we need to lock it specially the once on top. But there are times I still manage to select locked layers)
    3. After typing and locking the text, pressing “V” for the arrow key shortcut is still added to the text that is locked. (After typing I lock the text layer with my mouse and Press “V” to activate the arrow key… yes the arrow key is activated but the text is still typing the actual keyboard pressed)
I’ve only use the brand new PC and installer for a month now. Not sure if this is compatibility issues or something else I’m not aware of.
Thanks in advance to people that will reply.
    Cheers!!!

Well I’m still wondering if it is compatibility issues because I’m also having problem with Photoshop CS5. These 3 are all bought at the same time (PC, Illustrator and Photoshop installers). The problem I’m having in Photoshop is not that too important, every time I Ctrl+O to view files, all PSD are shown in white paper like icons, no preview, and saving as well.
Or I just purchased a corrupted or pirated installers… Adobe updates are done every time I’m prompted.

  • Cant share folders with windows pcs. and

I am sometimes not able to view the other windows pcs over the network. Sometimes i can. But i am never able to share my files with others even after turning the file sharing option on and adding a folder to be shared.

You can share any volume on your mac over samba wether it is usb disk, cd rom, hard drive etc without having to manually configure the samba config file if you use a great piece of shareware called sharepoints.
The problem you have is the volume name of a CD changes each time you use a different CD. So afaik you would have to create a new sharepoint each time you mount a CD rom with a different name.

After upgrading my iPad 2 to iOS 7.1.1, I can't use the app file sharing in the latest version of iTunes on Windows 7. I first noticed it with the Kindle Reader app but confirmed that it also isn't working with GoodReader, HDExplorer, and Notability. Any ideas?

  • File Sharing XP & Vista with WRT54G-RG Problem

I'm hoping a network ninja can help me out with this, because I can't figure it out.
I have a desktop running XP Home, with a wired connection to the WRT54G-RG Router.
I have a notebook running Vista that's wirelessly connected to said router.
I have a Rogers cable modem hooked up to the router for internet sharing.
I can surf the net fine from both machines.  I cannot file share.  On XP desktop, the Vista notebook does not show up in the networked computer map.
On the Vista notebook, I can see the desktop on the network, but if I click on it, I get:
Windows cannot access //basementpc.  Error code: 0x80070035.  The network path was not found.
Suspecting my new router, I hooked back up my old router, and everything works fine.  So I hooked up the new router again, and continued to try to figure this out.  I notice one thing strange.
If I run ipconfig on the desktop, it says that it's IP is 192.168.0.105.  If I view the DHCP table on the router, it says the desktop IP is 192.168.0.106.  I'm pretty sure these numbers should match, and I'm not sure why they don't.  They match when I've got my old router hooked up.
I can view the shared folders of the desktop from the notebook if I open a browser and type in the IP of the desktop (using the IP number reported from ipconfig, not the IP number from the DHCP table).
I've done a few things to try to get things working:
Turned off all firewalls on both machines, including the router firewall.
I've done an ipconfig /flushdns on both machines
I've done an ipconfig /release on both machines
I've reset the router, turned off wireless security (for testing purposes)
The firmware on the router appears to be the latest v5.00.38.
How can I get file sharing to work properly?  Not to mention printer sharing would be nice, but one step at a time!
    Thanks,
    Joe.

  • File Sharing over IPsec with RV220W

    Hello all,
Ultimately, the issue is that I have two RV220Ws with an IPsec VPN tunnel between them that appears to be up but that I can't seem to get folder sharing going over. Here's the background.
I originally had two Netgear FVS318s set up with a VPN tunnel and everything worked as expected. I could connect to the server at the office from a machine at home and browse the files and more importantly do nightly backups of files that had changed at the office over the VPN to the house. The problem with the FVS318s was that for wireless I had to have another device and that the WAN to LAN throughput was something like 7Mbps. Kind of limiting when you consistently get 22Mbps from the ISP.
So, I bought two Cisco RV220Ws to replace them with. I started by replacing the one at home and was able to get it going with the FVS318 at the office. The VPN was stable and I had no problem browsing the files on the server as I had already been doing. A couple weeks later I replaced the FVS318 at the office with the other RV220W and the VPN came up fine but I lost all ability to file share between the two sites. I've watched the phase 1 and 2 negotiations and they look good from both ends. Looking at the IPsec Connection Status shows IPsec SA Established. I know that the tunnel is there because I can ping various machines at the other site from either end. I've tried just about everything I can think of but I just can not get file sharing going. The other issue is that while I can ping each of the RV220Ws from either end, when I try to hit the distant end's management console through a web browser, I get the initial SSL certificate warning that I click proceed on and then it just sits there spinning trying to load the management console on the distant RV220W. With the FVS318s I could hit the distant end management consoles via browser. So, here's more detail.
    Site: Home
    Subnet: 192.168.1.x
Comcast Business Class Internet with a static IP
    Site: Office
    Subnet: 10.2.10.x
Comcast Business Class Internet with a static IP
I know the difference between my static (inbound IP) and my gateway (outbound IP)
I tried creating firewall access rules by defining services as follows:
    FS-TCP: 135 - 139 TCP
    FS-UDP: 135 - 139 UDP
    SMB-TCP: 445 TCP
    SMB-UDP: 445 UDP
Then the firewall access rules as follows (I'll just give a couple examples so you'll get the gist)
Connection type: Inbound (WAN(Internet) > LAN (local network))
    Action: Always allow
    Service: SMB-TCP
    Source IP: Single IP
Start: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (this is the gateway IP of the distant end at home)
Send to Local Server (DNAT IP): 10.2.10.x (the static IP of the server)
When that wasn't working, I created another set of rules for the internal IPs of the distant end as follows:
Connection type: Inbound (WAN(Internet) > LAN (local network))
    Action: Always allow
    Service: SMB-TCP
    Source IP: Address Range
    Start: 192.168.1.1
    Finish: 192.168.1.254
Send to Local Server (DNAT IP): 10.2.10.x (the static IP of the server)
I also enabled Remote Management of the RV220W as:
    Access Type: Single IP address
IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (gateway IP of the distant end at home)
    Port 443
When that didn't work, I created two additional firewall rules for port 443 for the home gateway IP and the internal 192.168.1.x IPs. Still no go.
So this is where I'm stuck. In the FVS318s I did not have to create any firewall rules for the VPN traffic. I started off with no rules for the RV220W because I didn't expect it'd need them and then I began adding the firewall rules in order to troubleshoot. Here's the funny thing. If I drop the FVS318 back into place at the office site, it all works as expected.
So where do I go from here guys? About the only thing I haven't done is burn down the VPN tunnel in the RV220Ws and I haven't done that because I can ping hosts on either end and if I drop the FVS318 back into place it works fine. I'm totally stumped and would sincerely appreciate any assistance anyone could provide. If you need additional configuration information, I can provide that.
    Thanks.

Thanks for answering, I was beginning to worry nobody had any idea how to help.
The IP subnets did not change on either end.
I am using the IP address to map. Critical machines are either static IP or reserved in DHCP and are all in the IP range of the VPN Policy.
I can ping distant end machines in both directions by IP through the tunnel but I can not ping by hostname. I do not have NETBIOS enabled on the VPN policy. I'm using OpenDNS on both sides, so when I try to ping the hostname of the server I get the opendns.com IP back because it couldn't resolve the IP of the hostname during the lookup.
Sorry for the delay in replying. Unfortunately, one end is at home, the other at my wife's business. During the day, I'm at work on the other side of town from both.

  • Problem networking with windows PCs

I'm trying to share my "public" folder with the Windows computers on my network, so I start Windows Sharing, and then it tells me I have to enable at least one user to start windows sharing, so I enable my username, and put in my password. When I go to the windows machine, I create a new network place, etc. and browse for my computer. My mac is found, but it won't let me open it at all. When I right-click and hit "open", it asks me for my password, so I put it in, and now my entire home directory is available to everyone on the network (not good). I can't for the life of me figure out how to stop it from sharing EVERYTHING in my home directory. Even if I stop windows sharing and reconnect, it still remembers my password and shares my entire home directory. I realize that I signed in on the remote windows computer as myself, which was a mistake. How do I sign out??? Even when I "disconnect from server" on the PC, it doesn't actually disconnect. My second question is: How do I ONLY share my "public" folder? Every piece of documentation I've found on the subject says that by default it should ONLY share that folder, yet it shares EVERYTHING. It won't let me connect to my computer at all from the PC unless I put in my user password. Please help!!! Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for your replies. I found a solution to my problem and it was indeed fixed by changing settings on the XP. It was related to sharing from a NTFS filesystem.
My problem was, I could ping the XP, even login with remote desktop, only I was unable to connect to shares. I saw the hostname in the network list, and if I connected it listed the shares, but after identification it always failed to find the alias. Trying via the command shell with smbclient showed me it gave a NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE.
If found this article Q304040 on the microsoft knowledge base :
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/en-us
In my case switching the "Use Simple File Sharing" feature OFF solved the problem.

  • Sharing DVD-ROM with windows computers ?

altought i'm very experienced with linux, i'm rather new to mac os, so if this question sounds dumb, accept my early apologies.
thing is, some time ago, i was trying to copy some printer drivers from a CD to a windows box that didn't have a working cd-rom reader. at first i tried to share my ibook's dvd drive with the windows box, but couldn't find a way to do that from the GUI. since samba is nothing new to me, i edited samba's smb.conf file and added the share manually. after i restarted samba, the windows box could see the share, list the cd's folders but it couldn't open any file nor run executables.
all windows said was that i didn't have permission to do so.
i ended up sharing the C: drive on the windows machine and mounted it on mac os to push the files to a temp folder on the wondows side.
i found and old thread here (from 2000 IIRC) about a shareware that could share folders other than my own home folder, but i don't want to use it, i rather edit smb.conf manually. i'd like to know if there's anything alse besides adding the share in smb.conf that'll allow windows to access the files on my DVD unit.

ok here is the problem the mount points of volumes on Mac OSX differs from linux,
In linux volumes are mounted in /mnt
however on the mac the reside in /dev for example my dvd drive on my imac is
    /dev/disk1s1
but the only way to browse the volume is using is pathname /Volumes/dvdname
where dvdname is that actual name of the disk.
So I can easily setup a samba sharepoint on my using the /Volumes path e.g add the following to /etc/smb.conf
    [dvd]
comment = dvd drive on macintosh
    writable = no
    path = /Volumes/dvdname
The problem is that whenever you change your dvd roms you have to change the path to the /Volumes/ each time.
Sharepoints would be quick way of doing this.
    I have tried using path = /dev/disk1s1
but I get an error I will keep digging and if you google around as well maybe we can find a good solution.

  • File sharing issue - Mac to Windows

HI folks.  I can get file sharing to work fine between my mac and my windows machines but every time I want to do it I have to remote to my mac, disable file sharing then re-enable it.  It works fine until the next day when I want to do it.  It keeps prompting for password until I do the same thing.  What's going on and how do I fix this?  Thanks.               Is there an app that does this easily?

you should create a user on the windows machine with the exact same credentials as the mac, or you will have to input password everytime.
then mount the SMB share on startup in your user account.
I do this and works pretty seemlessly.

  • Sharing Photo Stream with Windows user

Greetings.  I am trying to help a family member join Shared Photo Streams on their Windows PC so they can see the photos of their grandkids.  We installed iCloud Control Panel 3.1 on his Windows 7 notebook, and I created an iCloud account for him using my MacBook.  We can log into the account on iCloud.com, so we know it has been set up.  We checked the Photos boxes in iCloud Control Panel.
I added him to an existing Shared Photo Stream using iPhoto on my MacBook, and he received the invitation via email, but when he clicks on the link to join, all he gets is a page that says you can only join a Shared Photo Stream using one of a list of Apple devices.  I have read all the troubleshooting posts, and we even tried the hint that suggests killing all the Windows proceeses and restarting, but no joy.  I'm successfully sharing the stream with other Apple users, so the basic sharing is working.
I know we could set up the Photo Streams as public Web pages, but we'd really prefer not to have the baby pictures available to anyone who happens to find the URL.  Some posts I've read seem to indicate that other people have this working, but we just can't figure it out.  Any help from someone who has this working with the software combo above would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
