File Sharing on a Network and it only works one way

I recently configured a new wireless network, and want to fileshare between my Mac and old PC. I have followed several tutorials, and I can read/write to the Mac from the PC. However, when I try to connect to the PC from the Mac, it asks for username and password. I type in the only user name and password setup on the PC, and it says I do not have access to that server. Any ideas?

There is a "Server" service, and it is running on the laptop. The file I needed to move was ~150GB - wifi would be faster than OneDrive. You can appreciate my desire for full gigabit speed :)
I can connect to the laptop from the desktop over wifi. So the functionality of sharing is all there for me. But I am completely unable to set the wired network's location to "Private", which essentially enables Windows Firewall rules under the hood that
block any file sharing connections.
I can manually edit the firewall rules, but these apply only to network location profiles, i.e. "Domain", "Public", "Private", or "All".
I'll post a few screenshots to try and make this more clear.
Here is my wifi connection. Highlighted in red you can see the option to enable file sharing. Prett slick.
Here is a screenshot of my wired connection. As you can see, the option to enable sharing is completely missing.
The only explanation I can come up with for this is that it is an "Unidentified network", however on the other end of the cable is a desktop with the same connection settings running the same OS with the same updates and on that machine the network is set
to "Private" and has file sharing enabled. The option to enable or disable file sharing does not appear on the desktop either. The only difference between the two is that the network was enabled on the desktop prior to updating to Windows 8.1 (from Windows
8), the laptop had Windows 8.1 clean installed.

Is it because the new itunes looks different.

Then it should work just the same as on your old computer.

  • Lightning Connector Only Works One Way

I have two lightning connector cables, and the new 30 pin to lightning adapter, all direct from Apple.
I've found that if I plug them in one way, my iPhone won't charge, but, if I plug it in the other way, they work.
It'sprobably a software issue, as the pins aren't being reassigned. I found that if I have the plug in, and it's not working, I can restart my iPhone 5, and the cable will begin working for this orientation, but not the other way.
I've seen others mentioning this issue, but haven't found a solution yet. I've tried a hard and soft reset so far, and all that does is set the pins to work for one direction on the cable, not both.

I recently tried resetting all my settings. This did not work either.
The cable may appear to be charging, but no juice is flowing. If I reverse the cable, however, it starts charging.
I can't be the only one with this issue, as it appears to be firmware related. There's a chance it's hardware related, but my iPhone was working fine for weeks, with all cables. Now, all my "reversible" lightning cables only work one way.

  • Google Account BlackBerry Sync only works one way

Hey I just got my BB yesterday... I set up my Google Account on my BB and it downloaded all the data to my device. Then I set up an new Test-Contact and a Test-Appointment (calender) on my BB and it was synced to my google account... everything was fine... After that I set up another Test-Contact and Test-Appointment in my google account to check whether it would be synced to my BB... But that did not work at all... NOTHING WAS SYNCED... I waited for houres but it just would not sync the data to my BB... Same situation if I read or delete an Email in my google account the Email still appears as unread on my BB... But when I read one on my BB it appears as read on my google account... seems like sync is just working one way!
    Any ideas?

I'm still new with BB, using it as a loaner phone when my Android got waterlogged.  I have the same problem, sort of - in my case, I noticed with Emails that it takes a good amount of time for one read on the BB to show as read in my Gmail.  And it's the same the other way except maybe a tad faster.
But I'm not able to sync my google calendar any longer.  I read that google was dropping support for BB sync options sometime around 6/1/12, and somewhere in these support forums there's a thread on the topic, stating you can use your BIS account to get them to sync, and in looking for that thread I ran across your post.  If I find it, I'll come back and link to that thread.

  • Connection only works one way

I've been using LogMeIn for about 5 years. I renewed my subscription 2 weeks ago and can now only connect to my HOME PC from WORK.I am no longer able to connect to my WORK PC from HOME. Any suggestions ?

I am having the same issue.  With both computers in my office I can connect with my school PC to my MacBook, but I cannot connect from my MacBook to my PC.  "Could not connect. Check your internet connection" is the error message I get. Fix?

  • IP phones only working one way

Sorry, I'm a complete VoIP novice...
We have a bit of a weird problem in that when you dial an extension which is our other office (connected by 2 x 2mpbs MPLSs) the caller can hear the recieving person's voice but the the recieving can't hear the caller. This happens both ways, i.e. when we call them and when they call us. We do have an access-list in place and I have opened up the ports that were logged as being denied when the calls were placed (namely 51000 range) and now nothing is being logged as denied.
Apparently this has worked when initially tested, so I'm not sure what could have changed.
Any ideas? Has anyone come across this before? We are using Avaya phones.
    Many thanks,
    J2026

Thanks for your response Martin, much appreciated.
    1) I have removed all filters and re-tried: same result.
    2) Definitely connectivity is OK, OSPF routes in place, lots of traffic passes between the 2 regularly. Verifyied by ping as suggested.
3)This could be an issue...I've looked at the interfaces in question, and some of them have a large amount of drops - input queues leaving from here and output queues from the other offices, e.g.
    Output queue: 0/1000/64/1067272 (size/max total/threshold/drops)
However, I have cleared the counters and tried again, with same results, yet no more packets had been dropped.
    4) We currently only have 4 IP phones (1 at this site, 3 at other) as we are still setting it up. The problem is with all 4 phones, when going between offices. They work fine within the same office (to IP and standard analogue phones). Also, I can use the IP phone here to dial out to my mobile with no problems (this does not traverse the 2mpbs MPLS).
We will be implementing some QoS queueing tools but I was under the impression that we should be able to get at least some, albeit choppy, audio working. Do you think it's likely/reasonable that this problem won't go away until proper queuing is implemented?
    Many thanks for your help.
    Regards, J

  • Audio only works one way

My friend and I tried audio chat today. In the past it worked fine. He has a new Powerbook and I have a G3 iBook, both of us are running Tiger.
He can hear me fine on audio chat but I cannot hear him at all. I have tested my headset and both the audio and mic work fine. He said his mic appears to be working correctly too.
    Some additional info:
    - he is on an ISDN connection
    - I am on a broadband connection
Previously, he was on broadband but has had to switch to ISDN.

Check syst. pref's sounds panel for correct settings and also go to ichat pref's & over to video.
Does it say "Ext. mic/Line in" or does it say, "Sound Input" above the Bandwidth Limit menu?
if you are using a line or ext. mic please change the setting accordingly (namely to "Ext. Mic" if you are using an external source for audio input as indicated above in your post).
Hope this helps but if not then you may have a network port issue. Either way please feel free to post back.

  • Scolling on wireless mouse. only works one way

from time to time, my mouse will not scroll up, but will continue to scroll down. This is when i use firefox (as my main browser). In the past, I'd oddly open up safari and scroll and problem solved. but not now.. not sure if its a hardware or software issue. I have gone into settings for mouse and reset as well..

It's possible that the scroll ball just needs cleaning. Take a look here:

  • IChat only works one way for me

    Hello,
I have an IMac running on OS X10.4.11 with IChat 3.1.8 (445). My son has a new MacBook running OS X 10.5.1 with IChat 4.0 (601). My son can invite me to video chat from the MacBook and I can accept from the IMAc. Everything is good. However when I initiate the invitation, it doesn't work. His "accept" button is not blue like it should be. I have a .Mac account whereas he is using AIM. we are on each other's buddy list, both active and can see each other's video-ready icon on each other's buddy list. We've both downloaded the latest software. I have set both machine's QuickTime to 1.5mbps. I have set IChat bandwidth on both machines to NONE (no success) and then to 500 for comcast, which is our ISP. I'm stumped. Help!

    Hi
In Leopard the Accept Button is not Blue.
Has he got any Firewall set ?
It is likely that he can call out through this but not accept incoming calls.

  • File sharing between Mac Mini and iMac "breaks" after reboot of either device, and won't restore.  Why?  Running Maverick 10.9.1 on both.  File sharing is setup on both.  Help.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple.  Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help.  Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.  File Sharing is set up on both.  If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart.  Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row.  File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem.  Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either.  No problem there.  Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
    Why?  Any ideas?

Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac.  NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored.  Real bummer.

  • When I updated my Apple TV it shows about 10 computers  on my network when I only have one computer on my network and they are all the same....why did this happen? I only have one computer   linked to the Apple TV

when I updated my Apple tv it now shows about 10 computers on my network which I only have one tv...how do I get rid of the other "computers" listed as they are all the same, this was not happening before I updated the Apple TV

It looks to be a bug. A reboot to computer and/or Apple TV may resolve it.

I am experiencing on going problems with my i phone 4 due to me sharing an i tunes account with my daughter. I have been told by apple to cancel my existing (shared) i tunes account and open a new one for my use only. How do I do this? I cant find any links in i tunes to do this. mountfield

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

  • File Sharing between Windows PC and MacBook Pro using Internet Sharing

I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell Latitude D820 running Windows XP SP2 and I want to connect both using any of these two options. I do not have a wireless router and I use Sprint 3G data card to access internet.
    1) I access the internet using a EVDO data card on my MAC and use Internet sharing to access the internet on my Dell laptop. How do I access the files on my PC from my MAC?
    2) I can have two EVDO data cards to access the MAC and PC independently. How can I setup file sharing between Windows laptop and MAC?

How can I make my computer only recognize my network and not that of one of my neighbors? This is for when I am at home, and everytime the computer goes to sleep it essentially loses the connection, only to pick up my neighbors network when it is awaken.

You can make your network the preferred network.
 > System Preferences... > Network > Advanced... > Drag your preferred network name to the top of the list.
