File Sharing passwords

I am trying to share files between iBook and iMac. Both show up in the other computer's network, and printing wirelessly works as well. However, it is looking for a password for registered user in each computer, and any of the passwords I know to have set up are not recognized. Do you need to set up a registered user in the host computer before the remote user can access file sharing? File sharing is turned on, so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

dan, Welcome to the discussion area!
Let's assume that you have an OS X user 'MyName' on your iMac with a password 'MyPassword'.
If you are sitting at your iBook you can log into the iMac using the username 'MyName' and password 'MyPassword'.

  • Forgot File Sharing Password

Okay, little embarrassed about this one.  I went to shut the file sharing password off because I could not remember it, and in order to turn this functionality off, you must know the password.  Does anyone know if there is a way to recover the password or reset it?

Useless.  I forgot the password.  I have the PB in my posession.  I know my PB password.  I should be able to reset the file sharing password that I've forgotten with my PB / BB password and not have to remember the specifiec PB password I've set.  Yes, the universal rule is that you should have a PWD that is unguessable, secure, and rememberable (?) but it should also be recoverable.  BB seems to have forgotten one of the rules of passwords.
PS - I figured mine out.

  • File Sharing Password problem

Hi: In Storage and Sharing I have File Sharing  and Wi-Wi Sharing turned on. I never noticed that the Password Protect was turned on. I never set a password but now that I want to use it the PB is demanding a password - which I have not got.
Is there any way around this or do I have to do a Security wipe?
    Thanks.
    Donald

Try a number of your common passwords to see if you can get past it. Try your BBID Password. If you didn't set the password, someone must have had access to your PlayBook and set one. Check with your friends or coworkers. If you have to do a wipe, do a backup first. I don't know of any way around this situation. If you work with jerks, you will have to set a password to keep them out.

  • Forgotten File Sharing Password in Parallels/Fusion WinXP

    Hi there,
    I have an irksome problem.
I tested both Parallels and Fusion to see which I preferred (both with genuine Windows).
I did default file sharing (I think) in the Parallels install.
I imported the virtual machine from Parallels to Fusion.
    All working fine.
HOWEVER, in my Finder window, when Fusion/Parallels is running I get a shared drive called xxxxf20c. When I try and 'connect as' it asks me for a user/password.
And I can't for the life of me remember the user/password it should be.
Is there a way I can reset this password/remove that file server without uninstalling everything? Indeed, will a complete removal of all the virtual machines and fusion AND Parallels actually remove it?
Help appreciated - it's really bugging me!
    Cheers,
    M

  • How does one set up a file sharing password?

    Hi,
My wife and I use the same Airport Extreme station to access the Internet and each other’s machine. Every time one of us wants to connect to the other machine via AFP, a dialog box springs up that has radio buttons, giving the choice of ‘Registered User’ or ‘Guest.’
Where, on the serving computer, can one set up a ‘registered user’ with a password? Would doing so allow the registered user a wider access than only the ‘Drop Box?’
    Thanks,
    Klaus

"Registered user", in effect, means "OS X user on the machine being shared". So, you could, right now, click on "registered user" and log in to your wife's Mac using her login details (and vice versa). If you log in as a user, as opposed to a guest, you get access to that user's entire home folder. If that user is also an administrator, you get access to the whole system drive.
Guests actually have access to the "Public" folders in the system (which includes the Drop Box).

  • BB Playbook, File Sharing Password issue

    Hello all,
Please read the following carefully before responding. Others that have posted a simular question are met with responses that are clearly ill and too quickly read and to be blunt... pointless and not helpful.
I recently, today infact, tried to turn on "Wi-Fi Sharing" (through Storage & Sharing) upon doing so it asks for the system password, which I know and enter.
I noticed that the option below that is "Password Protect" and it is set to ON. If I try to turn it off or change the password (via the Change Password button directly below) I am asked to enter a password.
    ***Read Carefully***
I have never set this password. I am 100% sure of this. (This is where every other post seems to fall apart, blaming the user of forgetting the password).
The device seems to have turned on the password and set it to something... or perhaps nothing, without notifying me,  by itself.
What I need to know is if there is a way to recover this password that has been set.
    AND/OR
    What the password may be.
From other forums I've read some people hint at the latest OS update enabled this password by accident on users devices that previously had not set it to anything.
Please do not respond if you're going to blame me for forgetting the password, as I did not, as stated above I've never set it before. I've never even tried to turn on Wi-Fi Sharing until tonight.
Please do not respond if you're going to tell me that a Security Wipe is the only answer.
Please only respond if you know what the "bug" set the password to OR if there is a default password that was assigned to the Wi-Fi Sharing.

The exact same thing happened to me, But I put in the right password and it still wiped itself clean.
Yes and I agree with you, what a dumb idea this was

  • Can I convert a PB 1400's PC card port to a ethernet port for file sharing?

My plan here is to connect a PowerBook 1400cs/133 running OS 8.6 to an iBook G4 running OS 10.4 by means of an ethernet crossover cable, and move my important files (ClarisWorks 4.0 docs and games mostly) to the new computer. But the PB 1400 has no ethernet port! Is there something I can put in the PC card slot that will convert it to an ethernet port?

    jpl, Denis, here's my setup:
The PB 1400 is connected to the iBook via a Farallon EtherWave/EtherMac Ethernet PC Card (with a blue arrow, PCMCIA 2.1, PC Card Standard). I have the Farallon software installed and the Farallon extension turned on. A "Farallon EN Card" icon appears on my desktop, and the little light on the cord where it connects to the card is green. I used to use the card to connect to the internet back in the day when the 1400 was my primary computer, so I'm confident it works.
The PB 1400 (name: Ben's PowerBook 1400): AppleTalk, configured to connect via alternate ethernet. File sharing, on. TCP/IP, connected via AppleTalk (Mac IP). I've tried configuring that both "Using Mac IP server" and manually by entering in the iBook's IP address and router address (the 1400 is not connected to the internet). As far as I can tell, Users/Groups is configured; it has "Ben" as "user" and "Guest" as "guest user."
The iBook (name: Ben's iBook G4) is set up basically identical to the way jpl describes his iMac above. Like his, the services panel of sharing on the iBook says "Other Macintosh users can access your computer at afp://x.x.x.6." I also manually entered the iBook's IP address, subnet mask, and router. Under my shared location, under Built-in Ethernet, TCP/IP is configured and AppleTalk is active.
Still, file sharing is not working. When I try to access the iBook from the 1400, I go to the Chooser, click the AppleShare icon, and "Ben's iBook G4" in the file server window. When I select it and click OK, I go to a screen to enter my name (Ben) and password as a registered user. I'm not sure if the password it wants is the file sharing password I set up for the 1400 or the administrator password for the iBook, so I tried them both. I also tried connecting as a "guest." In all cases, after I hit the "Connect" button, I got the error message "The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken."
No luck going the opposite direction either. When I go to Go: Connect to Server: Browse on the iBook, "Ben's PowerBook 1400" appears in the Network area, but when I select it and hit the "connect" button, I get this error message: "The file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it."

  • How to resolve password issue when attempting file sharing?

I have an Imac with os9.2.2 and a ClamShell ibook with os8.6. Until recently I have been able to file share, using an ethernet cable, without using a password.
When I go into Chooser on either machine and click on file server, eg. "Imac", I get a message to effect that the password is not recognized. I have tried to create a "new" password, but I cannot provide an "old" password.
How do I get around this or create a new password and move on?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Imac   Mac OS 9.2.x

Go to the Users and Groups tab in the FileSharing
control panel on machine number one. There you (as
the 'owner') will name the permitted User(s)—whatever
name you want to use— and you'll give him/her a
password—whatever you like or nothing at all.
Do the same on machine number two.
Since you own both machines, you can erase any
previous users with defective passwords. Or just
    change their passwords.
If the Owner of each machine is the very same name on
each and if you haven't established a password for
the Owner(yourself), then you should be able to log
in as the Owner w/o a password. Presumably this was
what you had. Did you change the owner's name on
    either machine?
If you're not worried about security, letting Guests
have access could also be password-free.
    Ed,
Thank you for your help; file sharing is now operating between those machines.
I have now added another computer(OSX Tiger) to the network.
I am having similar problems getting file sharing to work. The new machine is owned by my wife. I added a name for her computer in the Users and Groups on the 9.2 machine. Her machine seems to recognize the old machine. But when I attempt to connect from either machine I get the "cannot connect" message.
Apple Help for the new machine suggests that a connection can only be done from the 9.2 machine.
Any suggestions? Perhaps this is not fair to add another question. Let me know if you would prefer that I post a new question.
    Thanks again.

How do I move files from my iMac to my Airport without getting 'AirPort can not be modified' message. File sharing is enabled and I'm not getting asked for a password. Thanks

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
    Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
    AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
    Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

  • XP pro file sharing and guest password - how to enable guest password?

    Hi,
I want to share files between two Windows XP pro computers. I would also like that these shares can only be accessed with a password.
Here's a description of my setup:
I have two laptops: over 1 yo Fujitsu-Siemens (FS) running on Windows XP pro (finnish) and a brand new Thinkpad T61 (TP) running on Windows XP pro (english). Both of theses computers have guest account enabled and these accounts have also been password protected. FS's guest account is called "vieras" because of the language settings and TP's guest account is of course just "guest". Guest account passwords have been enabled using "net user <user name> *".
I've disabled simple file sharing on both computers, set shared folder permission to only contain these users: TP - "Guest (TP\Guest)" and FS - "Vieras (FS\Vieras)". Both computers have F-secure on them so I've made firewall rules which enable following services both ways to a specific IP: Ping / ICMP echo request and reply ; Windows file sharing and network printers ; Windows network browsing ; ICMP / Internet Control Message Protocol. I've also enabled these services on Windows firewall.
These computers can connect to each other either via Wi-Fi access point (b-mode) or directly using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi configuration (g-mode). Obviously the latter is used for more bandwidth hungry file transfers. Also, sometimes a cross-over Ethernet cable is used as well for even faster file transfers.
Everything on my setup works just fine except just one thing. I connect to a shared resource by running the computer's IP address. When I connect from TP to FS it prompts for username and password. FS accepts both english and finnish names for  the guest account provided that the password is correct. But here's the problem... When connecting from FS to TP _no password or username prompt appears_. If I browse TP's shared folder sessions (under My Computer -> manage) I can see that FS is logged on as "vieras" i.e. FS's guest account.
Since I enabled FS's network shares over a year a go I can't remember everything I did to make it work. Every relevant configuration on TP and FS seem to be identical (e.g. "Security settings -> local policies -> security options -> Accounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only -> enabled") but still TP accepts connections without password prompt.
I've tried to get TP's password prompts enabled for a while now without any success. I did a lot of searching on the subject but I could only find instructions on how to disable guest account password prompts for network shares.
Has anyone had similar experiences or does anyone know what I should try out next? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Success!
I solved my problem by changing guest account passwords. I tried to keep things simple by using the same guest password on both computers. This however allowed FS to log on to TP without guest password for some unknown reason. My logic would tell me that having the same guest password would allow both computers to log in without password but this wasn't obviously the case. I guess Windows has its own logic that I can't figure out or this issue had something to do with different language setups. Anyhow my shares work now like I want them to work.

  • My Mac got hacked. I was working on a word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how the hacker is skillful. At the that time I was on a password protected wifi and file sharing was off.

This is the first time I get hacked this bad. I was working on a microsoft word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how skillfull the hacker is. At the that time I was on a friends wifi network that is password protected (not sure about the encyrption), the Os X Firewall was on. I was using the admin profile, however, file sharing was off. I'm very careful not to install any suspecious 3rd party software.
So far I have verified permissions and fixed some errors there, and changed passwords.
Do I have to erase/format my computer and reinstall the Os? If so is it adequte to use the internet recovery tool or will it use old and possibly infected EFI/Root files?
Would appreciate the advice of all the Mac experts out there. Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • How to reset password for file sharing?

    Greetings,
I need some help in reconfiguring my network password that I no longer can remember (should have written it down, live and learn). I have two iMacs networked via a router. On one of them, due to the password problem, I can't connect to my other computer. I would like to "clean up" and set everything correct. That is, ID on the chooser, file sharing etc. to be consistent and start fresh with a new password. Is this possible without having to reload my software? If so, can anyone give me some directons? Thanks in advance for any help.

    Duane,
yes at one point i think I had the multiple user enabled, but I still had one password to access from both A & B computers, so it will be simpler. For some reason the A computer works and I am able to see B via the file sharing. But not the other way around. It is possible I may have used another password, and now I forgot it on the other computer. Now I want to know is, if I can redo the whole thing where I can configure both computers and set up a new password (I will make sure I write this down some where). Thanks for your assistance, I do appreciate it.

  • Disable change password in the file sharing window

I have two labs, 25 computers per lab.  One is running Lion, the other is running Snow Leopard.  When file sharing to other computers in both labs on our network, it is required that you enter a password before you can access the files.  Lion offers the option to change that password for certain computers when file sharing with them.  I need to disable this feature so students cannot change the passwords randomly.  The students may not be able to change the password for other Lion computers, due to parental controls that I have set, I'm not positive, but they can change the password for a Snow Leopard computer, and my network people do not want me putting Lion on all of the computers, therefore this is not an option.  Is there any way for me to disable this feature?

Hey, password file is a binary file, you are not suppose to do that.
    Drop prassword.ora file
Use ORAPWD utility to create a new password file.

  • I heard that if you file share with someone on accident, they can gain access to your mac if they know the password to your mac. Could someone who I accidentally file shared with login to my mac if I did not have an admin password at the time?

I know it was stupid to not have a computer password at the time, but I now do. Could this be possible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This would only happen if you choose the whole hard drive as a shared folder, and it's not. By default, OS X only sets up File Sharing in order to share files through the Public folder. You can see which folders are being shared in System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing.
If the whole hard drive is selected as a shared folder, remove it because they can access to all your files without any password. Apart from that, there's no risk, as they can't see any other folder than the ones you chose in System Preferences > Sharing
